This match up is extremely hard for Aphelios because Tristana counters you in every way possible. She can ult you away when you try to fight her with Crescendum and jump on you when you don't have the right guns. Never go near bushes against her and don't get hit by her W. Wait for teamfights to out dps her, never 1v1 her.
This match up can be brutal for Aphelios especially if he doesn't have the right support. Make sure you're never in range for her to E onto you and don't blow your cooldowns until she uses her W. Being extremely patient is the key to winning this match up.
Aphelios and Varus have pretty similar levels of damage output in the early-mid game. Varus wins if he's able to hit Aphelios with his ultimate. Aphelios wins if he is able to land a combo on Varus.
Aphelios only loses this match up if he gets by a large amount of Feathers from Xayah ultimate. So long as you're smart about the way you fight her you win this match up everytime.
This match up is quite literally impossible for Aphelios. Yasuo can run you down and delete your chakrams making it really hard to get favorable fights. I normally dodge this match up, but if you do decide to play it look to play level 1 really aggressive and get lane priority from the get go.
Lucian is pretty good at catching you off guard when you don't have the right gun setup. This means that he can look to punish you whenever he feels like it. Look to only fight him when you have good gun set up for combos.
This match up is actually Aphelios favored for the laning phase because Aphelios can stand in the wave and make it hard for Ezreal to last hit. The match up is a lot harder in teamfights where it feels impossible for Aphelios to get on Ezreal.
Take Magic Resister for this match up and play around his cooldowns. You will outscale him so long as the game doesn't go out of control.
Similar to other AP match ups make sure you take magic resister and understand that you will outscale AP champions no matter what. Look to trade her aggressively when she wastes cooldowns in lane.
Really annoying match up for Aphelios because it's really hard for you to get chances to pop off against this champion. I recommend taking cleanse and trade her when she wastes her W in lane.
Kog'maw is a surprisingly annoying match up for Aphelios do to the nature of Kog'maw's kit. Kog'maw does a large amount of magic damage with his abilities and also has the range advantage on Aphelios. Look to out dps him with chakrams when he wastes E in lane.
You need to be extremely careful about your positioning against Kalista. If Kalista is able to get the first move on Aphelios she will always win the fight. Look to out poke her during lane with your range advantage.
This match up can be bad for Aphelios if Sivir is able to permanently shove you under tower. Look to constantly counter shove your wave and out dps her with chakrams after her poking her out with infernum / calibrum
People consider Miss Fortune to be an Aphelios counter, but so long as you play lane properly shes actually quite manageable. Look to not take too much free damage from her abilities and this lane should be pretty easy.
Pretty skill based match up where the better ADC can actually show off their skill. A good Caitlyn will auto attack you while you're csing, but a good Aphelios is going to trade her back with abilities and win the trade.
I've changed my opinion about this match up as of patch 11.14, I feel that Aphelios has very few weapons to keep Twitch from blowing open the game. Twitch is able to punish Aphelios' gun rotations better than any adc and if he finds you without red/white or green/white consider yourself smoked. This is my go to ban as of late because if you don't have an engage support you're most likely not going to win this match up. I recommend you try to cheese Twitch with grav from bush or all-in him with red/white to get yourself a lead before he takes over.
Senna is my go to ban when I play solo q because this champion is BRUTAL for Aphelios. She has range, slows, healing, and peeling an absolute nightmare for Aphelios. Aphelios wants to close the distance and Senna prevents you from doing that. If you do play this match up make sure you avoid taking any free damage and never let her get her two auto passive off on you. Only trade her when her abilities are down.
This match up can be really hard for Aphelios because Cassiopeia can dish out just as much damage as you all while having a more consistent trading pattern. The best way to beat her is by using Grav and catching Cass when shes playing too far up.
This match up can be really hard for Aphelios because she is one of the only ADCs that actually outscales him. Look to take all-ins during the laning phase with chakrams knowing that Jinx can't match your DPS.
Aphelios with combos > Draven. Aphelios without combos < Draven. Fight Draven when you have good combos and you'll never lose this match up.
Vayne can out DPS you if you're not careful about the fights you take, but laning should not be a problem in this match up. Look to poke her out of lane with the range advantage that you have.
This match up is really hard for Aphelios because Heimer is so good at dishing out damage while kiting back. I recommend trading when Heimer wastes his cooldowns and never outcommit too deep into a fight.
So long as you respect the fact that Kai'sa is probably going to hit level 2 first in lane, this match up is completely fine. Look for opportunities to out dps her when you're not isolated for her Q.
This champion hard counters Aphelios because he will take exhaust and make your life a nightmare. Make sure you take magic resist and poke him out before fighting him all-in. You should only take fights that you're 100% sure you're going to win against this champ.
One of the more fun match ups for Aphelios because if you're good at the match up you can take trading patterns that Jhin players aren't used to. Aphelios either needs to take really short trades where Jhin won't hit you back or super long trades where Jhin can't run away.
Pretty brutal match up for Aphelios, a kiting, CC, AP champion that is also extremely good at teamfighting. I recommend shoving her under tower and then faking a recall to cheese her from one of the lane bushes to take control of the game.
Thresh and Aphelios can absolutely pop-off together in the laning phase. Not only that, with lantern Thresh can help Aphelios out of tight situations all while enabling him to play aggressive. Look to start fights off with Grav and then let Thresh take control of the fight after.
My favorite support to lane with, Rell gives you so many chances to deal massive amounts of damage with your kit. Look to have infernum and grav ready for when Rell engages, you're almost always guaranteed a good ultimate to pop-off with.
Laning phase can be boring sometimes with a Seraphine, but the scaling that comes with Seraphine + Aphelios is absolutely bonkers. Assuming you two get out of lane fine, you're almost always guaranteed a free win.
Bard doesn't really provide anything that Aphelios needs for him to succeed. As an Aphelios just look to play around your Bard and let him go for plays. Don't try to trade too aggressively because your kits don't synergize too well with eachother.
Mao'kai is extremely good at setting up fights for Aphelios. Make sure you have a combo ready to follow up for when Mao'kai W's in. Just don't forget that you still need to position well because Mao'kai isn't the best at peeling you once you're caught.
Machine Gun Aphelios. Lulu is really good at giving Aphelios all the tools to 1v9, this lane is broken against engage supports, but struggles at dealing with poke. At three items it's almost always a guaranteed win.
Leona is really good at setting up for Aphelios, but her engage pattern can often be too ranged for Aphelios to follow up on. I recommend hovering close to Leona to make sure you're not too far back to follow up when she engages.
This lane scales extremely hard because Janna makes it impossible for people to kill you. When you play with Janna I recommend playing less aggressive and instead let the fights come to you so she has an easier time peeling.
Galio Aphelios is a pretty good lane that has both aggressive and defensive options. I'd say it's a better version of Aphelios+Leona because of the peel Galio can provide. The best synergy in this combo is to have red+white ready to follow up when Galio taunts your opponents.
This lane scales extremely well, but it comes at a cost. Zilean+Aphelios can get absolutely run over in lane so try to play lane phase a bit slower and let the game scale before going for aggressive plays.
After playing this lane a lot more recently, I've decided that Aphelios and Pyke are not the greatest combination. A lot of Pyke's pressure comes from securing a hook level 1 and being able to have kill-pressure. On the other hand, Aphelios' kill pressure comes in at level 2. These two champions provide very little for each other all while requiring high-skill to pull off their combinations.
Honestly, this lane isn't that bad so long as you play patient. Shaco works best when you don't force fights, but instead let your opponents force fights. Watch the fights carefully and use boxes to your advantage while fighting.
Not bad, Aphelios and Alistar can have their moments, but I personally feel that other engage champions bring more to the table for Aphelios.
Rakan doesn't have the best laning phase meaning that it's going to be hard for Aphelios to make it out of lane even. That being said, they make an awesome pair in the mid-late game when they take over teamfights together.
This lane can be absolutely hit or miss. You and blitzcrank are either going to go 10/0 or 0/10 no inbetween.
So long as Aphelios and Nami are coordinated together, they're one of the stronger Aphelios + enchanter duos. Make sure you play aggressive in lane to open up space for you and Nami to trade aggressively
Go next, Senna provides nothing for Aphelios meaning that they're both extremely exposed to any form of CC and ganks
Gragas and Aphelios have decent synergy so long as you don't mess up the coordination on your ultimates.
People like to think that this lane is a really good synergy for Aphelios, but Morgana's trading patterns and Aphelios' hardly ever line up. The only reason this lane is somewhat viable is because Morg has a blackshield.
This lane is good so long as you and Nautilus are on the same page. Make sure you're ready to follow up on his hooks without overexposing yourself.
This lane is a really good combination because Aphelios is great at procing Braum's passive. That being said, make sure you let Braum control the pacing of the lane and don't get too impatient.
This lane scales extremely hard, but just like with any Sona lane, play lane to survive not win.
This lane is okay in certain match-ups because Aphelios is pretty good at following up on Lux's burst combos meaning that you can one-shot someone to win lane.
This lane is really strong because Zyra can peel for Aphelios all while ccing them in a way that enables him to do damage. This lane is best when you're consistently shoving and poking during the laning phase.
I hate to say it, but this lane isn't as bad as we all think it is. Yuumi can peel for Aphelios later on into the game while enabling his teammates to make space for him. This lane requires you to avoid all forms of cc and never die and it'll make the game really easy to win.
This lane is great until you die to a gank. Make sure you're warding and watching your minimap and you two should be fine.
This lane has a lot of pop-off potential, but it can also backfire pretty hard. I recommend letting Swain tank up most of the damage and then going in for the clean up.
Taric is good at peeling for Aphelios in the post laning phase, but they don't really have any crazy synergies to get the ball rolling during lane. Play to farm and then win in teamfights.
This lane is good as long as you don't permashove without warding. While Karma doesn't scale as hard as other enchanters she can play lane more aggressively so long as you follow up on her poke.
Go-hard or go-home. This lane can be extremely volatile, much like other engage supports, follow-up on Pantheon with caution. Let him tank up some damage and then go in for the clean up.
Soraka and Aphelios can make a pretty strong combo so long as they aren't shoved under tower. Soraka is able to keep you alive while also having the ability to silence any threats that dive on you. Think of this lane as a secondary option to Aphelios/Lulu if you're unable to play that combination. I recommend you try not to leash when you play this lane because getting lane priority is important
Champion Build Guide
Hey, I'm Remmacs a Masters Aphelios Main from NA, I've hit challenger multiple times and I usually hover from Masters to Grandmaster for my average rank. I have around 1,000,000+ Mastery Points on Aphelios and I've been playing exclusively Aphelios since Preseason 11. This is my first attempt at creating a written Aphelios guide so I hope you guys enjoy it. I also stream on Twitch and have a educational Youtube Channel as well if you ever want to stop by.
Calibrum - the Sniper Rifle
Calibrum gives Aphelios 100 bonus attack range on his auto attacks.
Severum - the Scythe Pistol
Severum gives Aphelios % healing on his basic attacks that scales with levels. His auto attacks can also overheal him that gives him a shield that scales with levels
Gravitum - the Gravity Cannon
Gravitum gives Aphelios a slow on his auto attacks and marks enemies with binding which can then be detonated by his Q for a free snare.
Infernum - the Flamethrower
Infernum gives Aphelios AOE auto attacks that deal increased damage to the first target hit. Targets hit after the primary target receive reduced damage until level 9 where all targets are hit for the same amount.
Crescendum - the Chakram
Crescendum gives Aphelios chakrams that attack faster the closer he is to his target. Aphelios can gain additional chakrams to auto with by using his off-hand abilities and Crescendum ultimate.
Aphelios fires a long-range projectile that allows him to do an empowered auto-attack with his off-hand weapon if landed.
Aphelios gains movement speed and performs a barrage of attacks with both his guns applying stacks of his off-hand weapon.
Aphelios detonates stacks of Gravitum and roots targets for 1 second. Gravitum is the only gun thats ability doesn't apply its off-hand weapon.
Aphelios releases a wave of damage and then follows up with an auto-attack from his off-hand weapon to all targets hit.
Aphelios puts down a tower that acts as a clone copy of his off-hand weapon attacking the nearest target while prioritizing champions.
An AOE Circle of damage that stops on the first champion hit and acts differently depending on the gun it's used with.
Calibrum Ult: Marks targets hit and allows Aphelios to choose a target to do an empowered auto-attack with his off-hand weapon on.
Severum Ult: If at least one enemy is hit Aphelios heals for 250/375/500 based on levels.
Gravitum Ult: Gravitum slow is increased to 99% and marks all targets hit with binding.
Infernum Ult: Targets hit will explode with an Infernum splash that deals damage to champions in overlapping areas
Crescendum Ult: Aphelios will get 4 chakrams for one target hit and one additional chakram per target hit.
✦ Press the Attack|
Press the Attack is the most consistent Keystone for Aphelios. It gives him a good mix of early game trading combined with scaling into later portions of the game. While it has less pop-off potential in the early game compared to Conqueror and Less teamfight scaling than Lethal Tempo if you're unsure of what Keystone to take you can almost never go wrong with Press the Attack.
✦ Lethal Tempo|
Lethal Tempo is the keystone I run the least on Aphelios and that's because it's often the most inconsistent of the three. Often times you'll get caught in situations where your abilties might awkwardly proc Lethal Tempo or you're unable to get enough damage of kill someone where PTA and Conqueror would have been able to. That being said, if you plan on laning with an enchanter support and scaling as hard as possible Lethal Tempo is the Keystone to go.
Conqueror is my favorite Keystone of the three because it gives Aphelios the most outplay potential in the early to mid game skirmishes. By comboing your abilities properly you'll be able to stack Conqueror up in a fight and overwhelm your opponents with raw damage and healing. Unforunately, I don't recommend running Conqueror every game and instead only using it when you're laning against a Melee support and plan on skirmishing heavily in the early to mid game.
Flash: Flash is a must have on Aphelios, Aphelios becomes a completely different champion when he has Flash available. More than half of your outplay potential comes from being able to combo your abilities with Flash or avoiding crowd control to get damage off. ALWAYS RUN THIS SUMMONER
Heal: Heal is a really nice option for Aphelios because as mentioned earlier, movement speed during combat is really nice to have on him. In addition, being able to heal your support in the 2v2 is something that is considered the norm now and not having Heal can put you at a disadvantage.OR
Cleanse: Cleanse is a situational summoner that is really strong against crowd control that isn't a knock-up or supression. However, don't forget to remind your support that you're running cleanse so they know your 2v2 in lane is going to be a little weaker. I recommend taking Cleanse when you're laning against champions such as Ashe, Varus or Leona who have very consistent crowd control.OR
Exhaust: Exhaust is the best summoner spell for 1v1s, you should run Exhaust against champions that have extremely straightforward burst patterns. I personally enjoy running exhaust against champions such as Tristana, Syndra, Vayne or Zed and exhausting them during 1v1s to survive their burst and then win the fight.
- Immortal Shieldbow OR Kraken Slayer OR Galeforce
- Berserker's Greaves
- Runaan's Hurricane
- Infinity Edge
In the rest of this chapter, we're going to take a look at when we want to be building certain items.
These boots are great when you're against Full AD teamcomps that are focused on Lethality. However, keep in mind that you're going to be dealing slightly less damage for the trade-off of survivabiliy.
Infinity Edge is a MUST buy as Aphelios' third item because this champion scales best with critical strike chance. The moment Aphelios gets his Infinity Edge and 60%+ crit the game is over.
This item is a must against teams that have any champions or items that are focused around healing. With how prevalent healing is in League of Legends you can't really go wrong with this item.
Gun Order Red White
Gun Order Green White
The purpose of keeping our guns in this order is to guarantee ourselves strong pairings no matter what combination we're on.
- Severum, the Scythe Pistol + Crescendum, the Chakram Strong dueling and DPS
- Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle + Crescendum, the Chakram High DPS and Strong Zone Control
- Infernum, the Flamethrower + Severum, the Scythe Pistol Teamfighting with high survivability
- Gravitum, the Gravity Cannon + Infernum, the Flamethrower Best Teamfighting Combination
- Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle + Gravitum, the Gravity Cannon Strongest Utility Gun Set up
How to set-up our gun order
Aphelios guns start in the same order every game, Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle, Severum, the Scythe Pistol, Gravitum, the Gravity Cannon, Infernum, the Flamethrower and Crescendum, the Chakram. We are able to unlock our gun orders by changing the order in which we use up our ammo. To do this we do the following:
- First, we decide whether we use up Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle or Severum, the Scythe Pistol first to decide whether we're going Red/White or Green/White
- We then go through or guns while keeping them in order until we get to Crescendum, the Chakram and Severum, the Scythe Pistol or Crescendum, the Chakram and Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle depending on which gun you used up first
- Then, instead of using up Crescendum, the Chakram we make sure we use up either Severum, the Scythe Pistol or Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle to make sure that we're able to put white, between red and green. After this we should be in the correct order for either pairing
Note: If you ever accidentally get off the order you want to keep just remember to put Crescendum, the Chakram between Severum, the Scythe Pistol and Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle (or vice versa) and you'll always have decent gun combinations.
Examples of how each combo can be used together
Severum, the Scythe Pistol and Crescendum, the Chakram Close-range dueling
Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle and Crescendum, the Chakram Long-range DPS
Infernum, the Flamethrower and Severum, the Scythe Pistol Instant Healing on Wave
Infernum, the Flamethrower and Gravitum, the Gravity Cannon Quick Trades and Set up
Calibrum, the Sniper Rifle and Gravitum, the Gravity Cannon Long-range CC
Futures Updates I plan to include:
- Advanced Combos
- Add more details to match up section (soraka)
- Anything else I learn along the way
- BEEG YOSHI
