I had my review thread for at least a month before I became a vet, and in that time reviewed around 60 guides ^^
Vets can edit the stuff in the data base, like recently I went and edited all the recommended items from champions s-z (got rid of Soraka's Innervating Locket weeeeee!), and edited any spelling and category mistakes I noticed (Twitch with a Snare, Shen with Stun, Sona with Farmer).
We can't edit champion abilities, only champion statistics, like their attack speed at level 1/level 18 etc.
Also, as you've noticed, rec'ing guides brings you under fire. For example, I rec'd Wrath's Kat guide, and immediately there was a topic on the forums about vet's rec'ing each other's guides. It was the first vet guide I had rec'd =.=
Also, no midget porn in the Vet/Mod forums. Just coke and cookies, apparently.

I wanna be a vet too...sometimes i've seen guides that if I was a vet I could rec and get more attention to those that are good. That would be nice, I think, although I like practically never vote on any guides so I wouldn't vet rec tons either.
It'd be nice to fix some of the bugs in moba too (last time I checked sona still had no specifics in her skillset, for example)
EDIT:
I don't really mind reviewing tons of guides in my review thread. Of course it gets tedious but it can be fun too. The only reason I don't do it a lot is I have 7 hours a day to go on my laptop. If I eat supper, that's 6 hours. In 6 hours, there's only so much time to review guides (I can do about 2 guides an hour) and I like playing LoL too, and it goes for like an hr a game, so there's very little time to review guides if I play LoL too. I play hockey a lot too, which lasts for 2 hours, which means even less time.
Yeah I've seen some good guides to, that's actually helped me. I'm actually really picky though so unless your guide really impresses me I won't even up-vote your guide (I've like only up-voted 5-10 so far).
As far as being a veteran goes I was content with who was voted for it recently, such as JunSupport with his constant updates on the games ( even if I don't see him around much anymore =( ). That's what I look for in a veteran, also someone who is blunt about anything and don't give a ****, like the honey-badger ;)
o.o I had no idea veterans can fix bugs. I would assume that would be too risky and the moderators would do that.
I see, busy schedule. Meh, this summer gave me some free time but I've been busy lately too so I feel you bro. ;D
