Yorick is an amazing solo top character. The general way Yorick goes, is deal decent damage, and be survivable at the same time. There are a couple of items that are CORE for Yorick, and the rest is kind of situational.
Core Items:
Mercury's Treads
Manamune
Trinity Force
Situational items:
Warmog's Armor
Spirit Visage
Guinsoo's Rageblade (highly recommended)
Hextech Gunblade (recommended)
Frozen Heart (recommended)
Abyssal Mask
Frozen Mallet
Rylai's Crystal Scepter (recommended)
Force of Nature (recommended)
Guardian Angel (trollicious with ult)
Rod of Ages (recommended)
Its important to remember that yorick is a hybrid character, and one that is considered to be pretty sturdy. After the first three items that are core, i would recommend grabbing one more offensive item and two defensive items. First Things First, Rush
Manamune ALWAYS. After that, what you build is based on the situation. However, if i had to go for a build that i personally like the most, it would be:
Mercury's Treads
Manamune
Trinity Force
Guinsoo's Rageblade
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Force of Nature or
Frozen Heart, depending on whether the AD or AP carry are more of a threat.
Hope this Helps, GLHF XD

That's entirely debatable. Especially the rageblade. Yorick does not benefit from the AS of rageblade that much.

Unless you can explain to me why you're getting

Come late game, Yorick is 3 things, in this order.
Meat shield
Carry ulter
Damage dealer
Other than

I don't know why you'd ever build AP on Yorick. His only ability that scales with it is
Omen of Pestilence. That's like building AP on Nocturne because
Unspeakable Horror scales with AP. It's a little silly.
For that reason, I'd never build something like
Abyssal Mask,
Guinsoo's Rageblade or
Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
@OP: I'm a big fan of
Trinity Force on Yorick. Manamune is okay if you have trouble keeping your mana up.
Frozen Heart is really strong on him too. I usually build defensive boots, Trinity Force and the rest tanky. Just balance your armor, MR and health and you should be fine.

Thanks to Hoppermh for the sig!
I'm not an expert on Yorick, and have never claimed to be. Half the reason i do so much posting is to learn about things, and sometimes that happens when i am corrected. I am more than happy to bow out to people who clearly have more experience with characters than i do, and i appreciate the fact that you werent being an ******* about it XD
The purpose for the build that i gave was to deal a bit more damage. Whenever i play Yorick, i tend to feel like my damage falls off hard late game, and it kind of depresses me. Kind of like when i do a full support build on
Maokai. Yes, i know that when i do support, supports arent supposed to do damage, but i like feeling like im contributing more to a kill than simply landing a good snare that allows the rest of my team to swarm in and have a meal. Same concept for yoroic. Giving my AD or AP carry a few more seconds of life is all well and good, but i like dealing damage too. Really it all depends on how you want to play him.
And, @Lugignaf, why do you say that
Omen of Famine is the only spell that will activate the proc on rylais? I thought it slowed with effects from all spells?

I would think that you'd just build something like this?
Mercury's Treads
Manamune
Warmog's Armor
Trinity Force
Atma's Impaler/
Frozen Heart
Force of Nature
Something like that would be pretty standard in my opinion. Could get rid of
Manamune if you wanted.
Besides, Yorick is built as a lane bully and transitions from damage dealer to tank after laning phase.

1 Boots 4pot or armor 5pot, as you want
2 You have strong harass with spells, you want to use it a lot : Tear (and boots if you don't have) or Chalice, you want to spam ghoulz.
3If you are doing well and the enemy won't become a threat soon, you can go for an early Manamune, but you have to be sure you won't regret it. Otherwise, take some defense and wards. I like Glacial shroud but warden mail is strong against auto-attackers. Against magic harass, take some Null magic mantle (for merc boots and spirit visage). If the enemy is not yet based on magic damage but will become, Kindle gem first is good.
And take the right boots if you need MS at this point.
4 You have sustain, tankyness, now you can finish your manamune if you had a tear, or pick a Sheen. Your ghouls base damage are cool but not enough so you have to boost it a little bit.
5 What are the big threat in the enemy team ? Build against that and try to not let the other defensive stat low. If you are not sure, try to have a good amount of armor and MR. And build some HP, either a big item like warmogg or several little hp item like randuin's / spirit visge / TF / Frozen mallet.
How to choose between all the armor item ? Your first one, the one you build in lane, is to do well against an AD opponent.
Then, think about your team and the enemy one : do you want the active of a Randuin as a CC, do you want some more damage for you with Atma's (if your mates do not do enough damage you have to do some while being tanky), do you want to debuff several enemies with a Frozen heart, etc etc.
Yorick has high utility and good damages, you need tankyness to profit of it, each item having its place.
Same goes for MR item.
Do not focus on your hybrid scaling (W magic) or hybrid damage (W and E magic), this is like that to not allow Yorick to be a monster lategame while letting him being a monster in early and mid. Do not try to have spell pen or AP, you do not scale well with it.
It is better to be tanky, you already do a good amount of damage with a few AD but you need to stay alive to reach the enemies squishies, stick to them and kill them
