This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Unfair. Simply said. Pantheon gives you zero space for breathing and you must play really carefully to beat him. NO AGGRESSION. Just passively, wait for your jungler and then take his game against him.
Jax
Jax blocks your autoattacks AND your Q damage with his E, clearly unbeatable at earlier stages of the game. Wait for level 6. You'll have to miss some cs in order to survive. Just make sure to get Experience, since it's value is bigger than the gold. Good Jax will know how to counter every mistake of yours and make your game unplayable.
Renekton
Renekton's empowered W + Press The Attack makes your Healthbar disappear literally, since it's Shield Breaker and adds another autoattack in it. Try to poke him level 1 and get level 2 first. When he gets level 3 don't engage him. Wait for level 6 and if you don't have enough HP to fight, just play passively. Take XP and Gold if you can and wait for your Jungler to gank.
Darius
Good Darius can zone you and make you suffer every time you come to him just a little closer. But Good Yasuo can make him angry and greedy for kills, so that's how are you going to play. Just let him slowpush the wave to your turret and try to freeze it. If you are unable to freeze and your minions try to push towards his turret, use the advantage of your minions against him. Remember this, always when you trade with him, keep your dash up until he tries to throw his Q at you, and then dash at him. Don't take extended trades or he will get his passive up and make you disappear.
Sett
Sett is a problematic matchup. Considering the fact that you can dash through his W and escape his damage it shouldn't be big deal, but in reality it is. Sett is highly rewarded if he gets close to you. He can grab you with his E and stun you if he grabbed minion and you as well. Few autoattacks and you are already behind in health. He can even try to solokill you if he has Ignite. Play around his Cooldowns and wait for his mistakes. Dodge his abilities if you can and make sure that you poke him with your Q during your laning phase.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere is bad matchup for Yasuo since he has high hp at first levels unlike Yasuo, and he has early crit. His autoattacks really hurt but you are stronger than him at level 1 and 2. Just make sure that he doesn't get early fury if he overextends. At level 6 he becomes a threat. Try to save ignite after he uses his Ultimate.
Malphite
Malphite is really tanky. Tanky enough to survive whole Yasuo combo at level 6. His E reduces your Attack Speed, which is crucial on Yasuo. If he takes Arcane Comet, he will poke out of your lane. It's usually better to take Fleet Footwork instead of Conqueror since his poke with Q is good. Try to make him waste his mana on abilities and then engage him. Take extended trades if you have Conqueror. After level 6 try to poke him with your Q as much as you can and then engage when he is low enough to be defeated. He should throw his Ultimate or Flash in order to escape. You will get free platings and CS if that happens.
Vladimir
Vladimir is tricky matchup. You are by far really stronger at Level 1, 2 and 3. His cooldowns are really long early and you can punish him as much as you like. But in later stages of the game, he can become unstoppable monster. So stay focused and make sure to throw him out of the game, since he really struggles to come back in the game if he's behind.
Lissandra
One of the best Yasuo counters for the Mid lane. Yasuo benefits from engaging his targets, and Lissandra is a perfect disengager like Yasuo. She can poke him during the laning phase, and has perfect setup tool for his jungler to gank. Take cleanse against her, since it will help you by a ton. Always try to engage her when her abilites are on cooldown. And DON'T DIVE HER WHEN SHE HAS ULTIMATE UP!
Malzahar
Malzahar has a little advantage against Yasuo if he manages to get a kill or some good CS lead. His job is just to shove every wave at your turret and poke you during the lane. Take Fleet Footwork. CLEANSE DOESN'T WORK AGAINST HIS ULTIMATE. Try to purchase Quicksilver Sash after Berserker's Greaves.
Annie
One of, if not, The best counter against Yasuo on Mid. Her long range abilities and autoattacks make her safe from your engages. Her stun makes your game unplayable basically. So what you want to do is to engage her whenever she doesn't have her stun up. For example if she has 1 stack on her passive, and she doesn't have her E, it's perfect opportunity to engage her. Cleanse is better than ignite against her.
Talon
Talon at level two is unbeatable. Simply, he will proc his passive and ignite you, making you bleed until you die. Just let him push first two waves towards your turret and play safe until you get level 3. Windwall his W and you are good to go against him.
Zed
Skill Matchup. Take Exhaust. Conqueror Resolve. You are stronger at level 1, poke him if he overextends for some minions. Trade with him when he doesn't have his W up. Try to save your Exhaust for his Ultimate and Wind Wall his Q's. Use his minions against him.
Garen
Terrible matchup. Play around his cooldowns if he didn't erase your Health already and Poke him with your Q. His sustain is what makes his lane really tough. If you are not secure enough, play safe and wait for your jungler.
Akshan
Yasuo counters Akshan, as well as other marksmen. The only problem is that currently, Akshan became overbuffed and really strong pick. Just take Fleet Footwork and be aware of his E engages, after level 3 you will be fine.
Gangplank
Gangplank struggles against Yasuo, but if Gangplank has experience, he should know how to play against him. So in this matchup, you don't want to allow him to breathe, in a figurative sense, try to have good timing against his barrels and if he comes closer, just take extended trades and destroy his barrels and you should do well.
Camille
Try to dodge her E with your Dash on minions. Use your poke advantage to minimize her all-in chances. Stay at the center of lane so she can't engage you with E. Her Cooldowns are long early, so use that against her. If you don't feel secure to all-in her, let her slowpush the wave towards your turret and set up the freeze and wait for your jungler to come.
Neeko
Annoying matchup. Keep your Wind Wall for her E and take Fleet Footwork, Cleanse is needed. Dash away from her Ultimate if possible.
Volibear
LeBlanc
LeBlanc is a problem. You must Wind Wall her Q/E in order to stay on lane. Fleet Footwork with Bone Plating.
Riven
Skilled Matchup. This one goes favors Riven more, because she has W which is a stun and E to dodge your Tornado. You will have to use your dash on her well. Play around her Cooldowns, her early game Cooldowns are really high, so after level 3 just try to bait her abilities so you may engage her.
Fizz
Good Yasuo can play against Fizz really nice. You can Wind Wall his Ultimate but remember that it's not going to disappear, it will remain in front of Wind Wall, so be careful. His E is the most crucial ability in his kit, so if he doesn't have his E up, try to poke him and if he mispositions, engage him and you should get a Flash or a Kill early. You are stronger than him on level 1 and 2 and feel free to trade, don't take too much minion damage and you will remain fine.
Katarina
Skill Matchup. Wind Wall is working against her Q, AND against her Ultimate. Take extended trades against her since her Cooldowns in earlier stages of the game are big. Dodge her Dagger approaches with your E.
Aurelion Sol
All in him as much as you can, since his W is his damage source. Use your Wind Wall to block his Q. Always track him down the map, so your team knows whether will he roam or not. Just don't let him get ahead.
Ahri
You are pretty much stronger than her. If you feel insecure, take cleanse. Your Wind Wall works against every single ability of hers. You will use it almost always against her E.
Akali
Yasuo beats her early. But at level 6 she's pretty much outclassing you. Try to beat her early and don't give her space to Snowball. Use your Wind Wall smart. E+Q+Flash mechanic is nice mechanic against her, you will figure out why the bigger your experience gets.
Azir
Take Fleet Footwork. At level 1 and 2, if he makes a mistake in his positioning, punish it with extended trades. Later, you will have to play more passively since his poke is not to be joking about. But since Yasuo is designed to destroy champion like Azir, you should win this matchup. If he throws his Ultimate at you, you can use minions or even Him at the other side to dash so he can't even escape you. Of course good Azir can singlehandedly win the game, so be aware of those people.
Cassiopeia
In theory, Yasuo wins this matchup easily, but since Cassiopeia is a strong pick, Yasuo has to play a bit more passively in order to win. Play safe until level 3. Get your Wind Wall, and wait for her mistake. Your biggest opening is going to be if she wastes her W. Take Cleanse if you want against her Ultimate, but good Yasuo can dodge her Ultimate in good amount of situations, since you can dash through her in order to escape her stun from Ultimate.
Sylas
Yasuo has advantage against Sylas, but if by any chance happens that Sylas gets an early advantage in XP or Kill, he will be stronger. Use Ignite early in the fight but only when you know you are going to fight him really long. Your Wind Wall is working against his E2, AND Against his R, so when he tries to steal your Ultimate, you can time it really well and Wind Wall it. Keep distance during the laning phase, poke him with your Q and when the time is right, trade with him.
Irelia
Good Yasuo will always figure out how to beat Irelia, but since Irelia is pretty much unbalanced pick, Yasuo struggles to find a way to beat her early. You will have to use your Wind Wall always against her E, it works against her Ultimate as well but your timing will have to be better. Let her push the wave, since she is Level 1 monster if she gets her stacks. Trade with her ONLY when she has no stacks on her passive. If she takes Vampiric Scepter as a first item, consider rushing Mortal Reminder as your FIRST Item.
Veigar
Yasuo is winning this. Take Cleanse if you wish. Always trade with him and be really aggressive. Try to prevent him form getting stacks as much as you can. You can do cheater recall, and then let him push the wave towards you, set up the freeze, and let his comes for CS, if he does that, just engage him with dashes on minions and you should get a Flash or a Kill.
Xerath
Xerath is a poke mage, so you should take Fleet Footwork. Cleanse is not a must but you can go with it if Enemy Jungler has CC as well. If he overextends for more CS than usual, punish him. His Cooldowns are not really small early, so play around them. Wind Wall his E.
Lux
Lux and Xerath are pretty much the same. Their job is to be the poke mage. Yasuo is really nice against them. Use your Wind Wall against her Q, works against her E and W as well. Try to dash on her minions to dodge her abilities. Be aggressive on lane and you should end up getting a Kill.
Galio
A lot of Galio players pretty much the same mistake when playing against Yasuo, they overestimate him and engage him, throwing every ability they have, after that Yasuo can just autoattack him and Q him until he burns a Flash. After level 6, keep track on him if he attempts to roam.
Anivia
Engage her when she misses her Q, or if you Wind Wall it. Don't allow her to Snowball. Her stats are really low in early game, so you can be a bit more aggressive against her.
Gwen
Gwen can be annoying. She can take Teleport and Ignite and take Doran's Blade at the beginning, if she starts E, she is stronger than almost any champion at level 1. If she takes that, respect her. Play for lever 3 and take short trades against her when she has no stacks on her passive.
Ekko
Don't allow him to get Level 2 first. Be sure zone him at the first minion wave so he must throw his Q at minions in order to farm. Always try to dodge his Q or if you know you can't, Wind Wall it and always avoid short trades with him, since he wins short trades always. Yasuo wins this matchup easily but if Ekko knows Ins and Outs of his champ, he can use that advantage to beat you.
Heimerdinger
Heimerdinger's nightmare is Yasuo. Yasuo can just destroy his turrets whenever he wants and even use them to engage him. Heimerdinger has no escapes except his Stun Grenade, but Yasuo can just Wind Wall it and Heimerdinger is dead. You don't have to necessarily take Fleet Footwork, but instead you can just take Doran's Shield and Second Wind in Runes, of course go for Fleet if they have 3+ Ranged Champions.
Graves
Graves Mid recently became meta pick, due to his pushing power and 1v1 Potential. Yasuo handles him alright, but Yasuo is squishy, if Graves gets early Serrated Dirk, Yasuo is in trouble. It is true that Yasuo can block any of his abilities with his Wind Wall but it's on 30 Second Cooldown and you must use engage him with great causion.
My name is SVS Raka, and I will teach you how to understand and play Yasuo as simple as possible. I am Yasuo main with 1.2 million on this champion, so I've got big knowledge in my pocket. I will use my wisdom to help any of you to learn this champion as better as I can.
Yasuo is entertaining and High-Skill Champion, making it very interesting to play. You can always make some dashy and flashy plays with him, so if you like mobile Champions with nice engage potential and ability to carry your games, always consider Yasuo as your pick in Ranked Games.
My guide is also offering OFF-Meta builds and tips how to play with them, so if you want to enjoy Normal Games and have fun in League you can take some of my funny builds I've already mentioned.
I've put lot of effort in this guide, so if you find it helpful, be sure to vote for it and leave a comment if you have any questions. I will answer them all.
PROS
+ Extremely mobile + Strong in almost all stages of the game + Good synergizing with teammates with knockups + Good utility and peeling strength (Wind Wall) + Fun to play, very entertaining
CONS
- Really squishy, needs Immortal Shieldbow and Guardian Angel in order to survive teamfights - One of the hardest champion to master, needs much experience and time - His positioning in teamfights is weird, must be played as a engager even though he's squishy - Hard to come back when behind - Hard countered by CC, Yasuo is not recommended against a lot of CC in enemy team
