Hey guys, I've been an ADC main for 4 seasons now, being silver 4 in season 5 and recently reaching Master Tier 84LP on EUW and 280LP on EUNE. My main champion recently has been Caitlyn - hitting master tier with a 63% win rate over 125 games.

In this guide i will go over basic and complex concepts and tips that will hopefully help improve your caitlyn gameplay. Hope you enjoy! <3

When picking Caitlyn, unless the enemy laners make big mistakes, your win condition is completely based around getting a gold lead from minions and tower plates. By playing laning phase correctly, you can put the result of the game in your hands. The basic idea is that your pressure bot lane allows for an early gold lead and early bot lane tower. This priority should allow your team to take the first dragon, then rotate to the top lane to collect the plates and tower along with rift herald.

If you manage to help your team get all of these objectives the gold and map lead will be massive, allowing you to close out the game with your item lead and siege potential.

Good use of Caitlyn's Q is essential for a successful laning phase. Use this ability to both push the wave and poke the enemies down. Since this ability gets wider after hitting its first enemy, aim it through the minion wave and towards the enemy laners to maximise the chance of landing the Q. After a few points have been put into Q (and especially when ahead in lane), it does very significant damage to minion waves allowing you to always shove the lane faster than your opponents, which in turn allows you to poke them and get tower plates while they are forced to back off and deal with your minion advantage (if they try to attack you while you have significantly more minions alive, they will lose the trade hard because your minions will attack them).

There are two main ways you must get used to using Caitlyn's W - to control enemy movement and to combine it with ally CC to lock down and kill enemies. Get comfortable with using your traps quickly on CC'd enemies and enemies who used Zhonya/Stopwatch, or are being revived by Guardian Angel/Zilean R. Below is a video showing the best trap placements while seiging, defending, and setting up for objectives.

Use Caitlyn's E to kite back when enemies are attempting to engage on you/your allies. Check out the combos in the next chapter as almost every time you use 90 Caliber Net it should be in combination with your Q or W.


Caitlyn's ultimate ability is a fantastic long range exeuting tool with a variety of uses. One of the most common uses is to finish off fleeing enemies after a skirmish or teamfight. This use has excellent synergy with the Farsight Alteration orb (which you should be upgrading to at level 9 every game) where you use the orb to gain vision of a fleeing enemy, then use R to finish them off.

Caitlyn's R can also be used as a poke tool in laning phase. Use it when the enemy laners do not have sustain to zone them off of last hits and XP or force them to base. It can also be used to make the enemies even lower HP when preparing for a tower dive with your jungler.

Finally, since Caitlyn's R provides vision of the enemy you ulted, you can use it to maintain vision of a fleeing enemy so your team can keep chasing them. It can also track champs with invisibility if you ult them before they become invisible (e.g Akali in her shroud, twitch, shaco and eve). If your team are about to get a kill on someone you are not in range of and you will likely not need your R in the next minute or two, I highly recommend using it to secure an assist/kill and increase your gold and XP.

Caitlyn has some of the most complex combos out of any ADC champion, and mastery of them is essential if you intend to playing Caitlyn close to her potential. If you want to play caitlyn without use of these combos you would be far better of playing a more simple AD carry (and would likely have far more success).
