Humbly about Me

I've been playing league since season 2. Brand became my main champion shortly after, so I spent about 7 years playing him by the start of season 9. I had played about 700 ranked games with Brand by that time - I put quality above quantity.

In season 6 I reached my peak of abilities and got into 4th place at EUNE server as Brand one trick pony, and about 31st place in the entire world with winrate of 68% out of 140 games played.

My highest rank was Diamond 3, feel free to judge my guide, and do not hesitate to leave a comment below and share your knowledge about Brand with other players.

Runes

SORCERY MAIN TREE

Arcane Comet provides damage together with burst. I suggest playing it in every match, Summon Aerie is support rune, you are however a mid laner.

Manaflow Band rewards you for poking your enemy, doesn't that sound awesome to get additional mana pool out of harrasing your enemy at lane? That's what you were born to as Brand player.
15s Cooldown - Stacks 25 mana per ability hit
After reaching the 250 mana cap - restore 1% of your max mana every 5 seconds.

Transcendence provides 10% Cooldown Reduction at level 10, that opens you a door to get 40% cdr in later stages of game.

Scorch is an additional burst/poking ability that works insanely well with your kit, it may be casted twice to thrice times if all goes well.
  • gathering storm another ability that makes you scale better and provides a decent amount of AP post 30min of game

INSPIRATION SIDE TREE

Magical Footwear is a great choice due to Brand's lack of mobility, any additional movement speed will increase your chances to surivive and position better.
  • Perfect timing is an exchange for Magical Footwear. That's one of the hardest rune choices. As a squishy you require additional protection, quicker way to finish your build and get as much advantage in gold or itemization as you can. Consider that with additional movement speed.
Cosmic Insight That's an interesting choice which slightly increases your Cooldown reduction to maximum of 45%. I suggest picking it up only when you're sure you'll hit that Cdr cap.

Biscuit delivery is a safe option for laning phase, feel free to pick it versus agressive poke-focused enemies. It also provides slight bonus to your mana pool for every consumed or sold biscuit.

DOMINATION SIDE TREE

Cheap shot provides additional damage to enemy champions with impaired movement. It work's well with your stun but also procs from Rylai's Crystal Scepter.

Eyeball collection gives adaptive AP from enemy takedowns. Additional amount of AP is always great thing, but my idea of Brand's build doesn't rely on ability power, but on additional effects that come from itemization.
  • Ravenous hunter grants additional healing from abilities for unique takedowns on enemies. It's great ability that provides decent amount of sustain in all stages of the game.
  • Ultimate hunter is an interesting ultimate - cooldown decreasing ability that passively reduces it by 5% and additional 2% per every unique takedown.
  • Relentless Hunter provides a decent bonus to out of combat movement speed, it's great choice in heavy-roaming focused game matchups.

Itemization

CORE

Sorcerer's Shoes is a common choice for nearly every ap focused champion, and such is Brand. They provide decent flat bonus to magic penetration that works really well together with Morellonomicon or Void Staff. Consider other footwear like Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi against certain opponents if required.

is a must have in every single game you play. No matter who you face, Rylai's Crystal Scepter grants you nearly a permanent slow against your opponents due to passive Blaze. In many matchup's such slow compensates your lack of mobility, and allows you to freely poke and kate the enemy.

builds from Haunting Guise which makes it a perfect choice due to pleasant, cheap and quick build-path. Liandry's Torment enriches you of another DoT ability, that cooperates with your passive Blaze.

OPTIONAL

Rabadon's deathcap is an item that provides the biggest amount of ability power in the entire game, it makes Brand abilities scale very well, however there are many better choices that cooperate with your abilities than pure AP that comes from it.

Void staff grants huge bonus to % magic penetration, you should get it as a 4th-6th item, dependently on enemy team's ability to resist your magic damage.

Morellonomicon is another well suited item with easy build-path that works extremely good against champions like Swain, Vladimir, Volibear or others with such healing abilities.

Zhonya's hourglass Without a doubt, Zhonya's hourglass is one of the best items in game. It provides good amount of armor, together with an active ability (90s cd) that makes you immune to any damage for period of 2 seconds. it's a must buy in nearly every game.

Banshee's veil is great magic resisting item with (45s cd) shield that stops any ability that should be considered as an opposite of Zhonya's Hourglass; which is undoubtedly better choice due to it's active that can be used manually, versus certain AP champions with great bursting abilities like Veigar or annoying ones like Karthus.

Luden's echo is a great 1st-3rd item choice since it provides huge mana boost together with damage-dealing AoE passive ability that procs with hitting an enemy.

Trick

If you're fast enough and cast Sear + Flash in a certain range from enemy, followed by Conflagration you're able to stun your enemy in insanely short period of time due to Sear being cast from your starting position and getting in range to cast Conflagration.

Summary

Brand is an utility mage due to his supporting itemization. Has monstrous teamfighting and solo-ing abilities, he's highly burst focused, provides tons of damage and works insanely well against enemies that can't reach him fast enough.

He synergizes very well with any kind of front lane champions that are able to hold a group of enemies in one place for a short period of time. For example Amumu, Jarvan IV, Galio etc.

His main issue is health based damage that doesn't work perfectly against squishies although it's still not a problem to burst them down while your cooldowns are short and you can kite your opponent down. But on the other hand he's a monster against tanks, especially easy kite-able ones e.g. Sejuani, Sion, Nautilus or even bruisers Riven, Darius

Brand lacks mobility very badly, any possibility that provides additional movement speed should be considered with high priority Ghost, Magical Footwear, cloud drake
