Champion Build Guide

A Twist of Fate (Off-meta AD)

By CptTeemoOnDuty
Champion Introduction
This guide will talk about Twisted fate in another light, as an AD based champion rather than AP, you can play this in most lanes, I will focus mostly on Twisted Fate as an ADC, but it is also viable as a top/jungle or even midlaner. If there is anything missing, or if you have a suggestion, make sure to comment them down below (Thank you).
Traits:
Mage, Marksman.

Common roles:
Midlane (But this guide will play him as Botlane/Toplane)

Summary:
Twisted Fate is usually played as a midlane Mage with high damage but lower health. He has good crowd control with his gold card and high pick potential with his ultimate. In this guide however, we will be looking at Twisted Fate as a botlane or even toplane marksman, mainly using attack speed and crit to his advantage. He still keeps the high pick potential since his ultimate still is just as useful as when he goes ability power. The best and most obvious reason you should play this is the satisfying sound of his cards clashing into enemies. Further information will be seen below, I hope you stay and enjoy the guide.
Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Boast a 2s long stun
  • Kit includes crowd control
  • Versatile playstyle
  • Straight forward kit
  • Good split-pusher
  • High map pressure with ult

Cons

  • Lacks some damage early.
  • Wild Cards is quite useless.
  • Can fall behind.
  • No movement abilities.
  • Weaker than other ADCs.
  • Crowd control can be denied.

Runes

Precision

Press the attack

Honestly, the first three options are good in this build. Overall Press the Attack will grant the most value. But there are cases where Lethal Tempo or Fleet Footwork can work well. Fleet Footwork would work great in a lane against heavy poke to sustain yourself. Lethal Tempo works well in a build with more attack speed and less crit (On hit).

Triumph

Overall Triumph takes the cake, it's good for extended fights, it will save you at times after a more difficult fight from ignite or DoT. Overheal is a good option too if your build includes a bit more life steal. Presence of Mind is not really needed as Twisted Fate has blue card to get mana whenever.

Legend: Alacrity

Again, it is mostly dependent on what you need. If you want some added life steal, go for bloodline. If not then stick to Alacrity, the added attack speed is a nice benefit. Usually tenacity is not really needed since getting stunned usually means you die anyway, it won't really save you in most situations.

Coup de grace

Coup de Grace is best overal, it adds some extra bonus damage when your enemies are lower to finish them off. Cut Down can be good when you play on toplane against heavy tanks but it potentially wont work as well later in the game against other members of the enemy team.

Sorcery

Sorcery

As for now, I've encountered Sorcery to be great as secondary tree. Nimbus Cloak grants a nice movement speed boost when using summoners that let you catch or get away from sticky situations easier. Gathering Storm also is great to get those added stats the longer the game goes on.

Stats
9% Attack speed
+9 Adaptive
+6 Armor
As for stats, Twisted Fate benefits well from these three, the attack speed is good for early farming and trading. The extra adaptive damage helps gain some extra AD early on. Swap out the armor for magic resist if you are facing mages botlane.
Summoner Spells

Flash:
Flash is the most common summoner taken by almost any champion, it helps you disengage or engage. It allows you to have that mobility when needed to get into a fight or get away from a dangerous situation. For Twisted Fate it might mean a garanteed stun with Pick A Card or a way to escape a gank or skillshot.

Heal:
Most marksmen use Heal as a way to sustain themselves during a fight, usually they lack a big health pool and Heal can change a fight to win or lose it. This summoner can however be changed for Cleanse if the enemy has a lot of stuns you might want to escape or Exhaust if you need to shut down a strong enemy to be able to kill him and make it easier for you and your team.

Exhaust:
As mentioned before, Exhaust is really good right now. It slows down enemies and reduces their damage. This really helps against strong enemies that can potentially one shot you or have high attack speed/movement speed. This can be picked up if your support goes for heal or your support can heal naturally. Either way it's good to consider your options.
Tips & Matchups

Tips

I can see you
Something you might not know is that Twisted fate's ultimate reveals enemy champions, even when they are invisible. This means that if Vayne decides to ult, you can ult (without teleporting) to see her the entire fight. The same goes for any other enemy that can turn invisible. It can help your team spot a Rengar or Twitch trying to flank.

Pick a gold card
Twisted Fate has access to a hard stun that last 2 seconds, compared to most ADCs this is quite insane, later in the game he can easily just hit them and instantly kill any other ADC in that duration, unless you are quite weak or they can kill you before you can hit them.

Going global
With a build in teleport, you can move around the map quite efficiently. Combine that with other global/semi-global abilities and you and your team could potentially catch certain enemies out of position easily or force fights with a number advantage. Combining your ult with Yuumi allows you to move together to a location and potentially get a pick in what would've been a 1v1 but now is a 2v1.

Abilities

Loaded dice

Not the most interactive ability but it allows Twisted Fate to get a lot of extra gold by farming, it might lead up into getting an extra item before your enemy does.

Wild Cards

This ability is mostly useless in this build, I sometimes considered not even leveling it but at times it can be useful to poke or even kill an enemy when they are low on health. It can also be used to trigger Lethal Tempo if you decide to use that rune.

Pick a card

Pick a gold card would be a better name, as usually this is the go-to card to pick from the three. Remember you are able to use your auto-attacks while you pick a card so there is not as much pressure in a fight to stand there and do nothing while picking one. Sometimes picking blue is good to sustain your mana in lane or even deal some extra damage when needed. lastly red card is good to farm since it does a nice AoE effect, but it can also be used to poke or hit several enemies with a slow.

Stacked Deck

The most satisfying sound in the game is hearing these cards clash into the enemy. This ability is mostly just a bonus damage every X amount of auto-attacks but it does help your damage output and also provides you with mixed damage.

Something to consider is that Runaans actually grants you extra stacks of Stacked Deck charging it faster, similar with Guinsoo's.

Destiny

A great ability to get back into lane early on, catch stragglers alone and clean up fights. It shines if the enemy doesn't respect your ultimate and goes in a sidelane alone. This makes you able to swoop over and get a usually free kill, especially if the enemy champion is squishier. This ability also grants vision of all the enemy players, giving you information on the map to where they might be or even the objective they might be doing.

It can also be used as an escape tool, the windup duration is quite fast so it gets you out of locations quite quickly. It can even be combined with Pick A Card to stun an enemy then teleport away while they are stunned.

Shen's skills usually get leveled up like this, prioritizing his ultimate, then Q, then E, and finally W. This however is not always the case, as sometimes leveling your Shadow Dash (E) before Twilight Assault (Q) is more effective, especially as a support.
Items

Doran's Shield
A good starting item in a lane with a lot of poke, you are a bit weaker early on so it might be smart to go for the defensive choice early. Take in mind that your adaptive damage will become AP in this case.

Doran's blade
The most basic starting item, it grants damage and some life steal. Usually the best thing to pick up in lane.

Blade of the ruined king
Good starting item for Twisted Fate, grants good stats overall and also helps later on to shred through tankier champions.

Rapid Firecannon
Synergizes perfectly with Pick A Card, it lets you hit enemies at a further range with your stun, giving you bigger pick potential.

Runaan's Hurricane
Good for AoE damage, helps clearing waves but also do more damage to multiple enemy champions. It also grants more crit which is nice.

Guinsoo's Rageblade
This item is better against tankier comps where Crit is not as useful, it will give you a lot of added attack speed and also some AP stats which benefit Twisted Fate

Guardian Angel
If you need some defensive item, GA is usually the way to go, it lets you play more aggresively at times when its up and might save you from an all in.

Wit's End
Great in combination of Guinsoo's Rageblade. It will give bonus on hit damage and also give some extra healing. It works well in comps against mages.

Honorable Mentions
Of course as seen above, there are quite some more items there that I highlighted as possible choices. Here I'll talk a bit over how these items can be helpful.
Laning
Easy on cowboy.
Usually Early game for Twisted Fate is based on just farming, try and get ahead by outfarming your opponent. Poke him down with Pick A Card and potentially your support can all in them for a kill. If the jungler comes, make sure you have your gold card available to potentially flash in and secure the kill.

Take into consideration that you are quite slow, you can't dodge certain skillshots easy as you do not have a lot of movement speed nor abilities that enhance this. Just like playing other immobile marksmen, play safe and scale up for later. If you see a good opening take it but try and freeze the way to your side since that's where you are safest.
Mid game
I think you got left behind...
Once midgame comes around, you have access to Destiny, this lets you jump back into lane and sometimes even clean up a previous fight or people who stayed in lane too long to pick up some extra gold before going back. In combination with Yuumi this can result in some easy kills and potentially bringing you back into the game.

This can also allow your team to scout out the enemy jungler, set up dragons or even get a sneaky dragon steal with the vision you get from this ability. It will also let you rotate faster than other enemies, since during midgame you might be pushing bot but then rotate to top once their tower is down or mid if you pushed in deep enough. Overall during midgame you'll be looking to farm up and catch people whenever you can.
Late game
How does he get that many cards?
Once you get later into the game, maybe you need to splitpush. You can do so once your Destiny is up, this can be used to get into fights or run away if the enemy comes to gank you. If you need to stay with your team, use Destiny to flank enemies or catch off people trying to rotate.

If needed, be the one to engage with your Pick A Card, if you hit a good gold card on an enemy, especially with Rapid Firecannon, you might be able to win a fight just from that 2s stun duration. It is a very powerful tool. At this point, once you have 3-4 items, you can usually almost always kill someone during the stun duration. Don't be shy to teleport into people and kill them before they know it.
