Anything in this difficulty is a dodge.
Camille's Shield blocks your burst, she can heal through your burst and can statcheck you post sheen.
Kayle
You can't punish her pre 6.
We know what happens when you can't punish a kayle pre 6.
Vayne
Dodge if you have a farming Jungler (Yi, Lillia, Diana etc.)
build:
EON -> Galeforce -> Zeal -> Serpents Fang
This lane is a HUGE knowledge check and relies on you knowing to build this into her
She can't really join river skirmishes because of how low her HP value is (she will just get blown up with her subpar range) so that's not a problem but we are still concerned with her poke as it can setup dives with JG
Malphite
Take Conqueror and China him in lane post level 3 you just run over him tank the entire minion wave too if you want it doesn't even matter
Draven
The odds that you go against someone who plays Draven top is super rare but if you do INSTANTLY dodge. It's significantly worse than Vayne.
Kalista
PAIN INCARNATE look draven
Cho'Gath
You lack the damage to punish him early + he outscales you to a very severe degree
His passive prevents you from ever getting him in lethal
Darius
Darius is a very difficult matchup, but only if the Darius player is good.
If both players play perfectly, Darius will play for a 4 wave crash, help his jungler get scuttle crab/reset, buy boots + cloth armor and hold a freeze. You cannot contest him. Your goal is to try and get as much cs as possible while begging your jungler to help break the freeze. The game will end before you catch back up, so you should instead play for teamfights by using your slippery nature to setup vision.
If the Darius fails to set you behind: He messed up his freeze, messed up a trade, whatever it be, you will be able to fight him if you are both even at level 11 + Stridebreaker.
Most Top Laners like taking Ignite into Darius. DON'T do this. Even with Phase Rush, if you don't have Ghost + Flash he can brute force you with his Ghost + Flash and run you down.
DO NOT buy Tabis into Darius. I'm not sure why people like to do this, but don't.
You always need to make sure to match his movement speed. If he pops ghost, you pop ghost. If he flashes, you flash. If he buys swifties, you buy swifties. If he buys DMP, you buy Ghostblade or DMP. At a certain point though, if he goes full movespeed in his build, stop trying to match it and build juggernaut items (Sterak's, Black Cleaver) so you can statcheck him and punish him for building poorly. His 5 stacks -> one shot only matters if he actually built damage.
Teemo
This matchup is a problem at high level because Teemo has a very easy time prepping Garen for dives. This is because Garen's sustain works over time and cannot protect him from the bursts of damage that Teemo gets when he is poking Garen for CS. Eventually this leads to Garen getting dove under tower and him falling very far behind. Furthermore Teemo can statcheck Garen early, making early all-ins unfeasible.
This matchup is much easier with jungle help.
Yone
Garen Buffs made this matchup 9x easier and now you can just roll over him with Ignite/Galeforce situationally
Yorick
Early is rough but if you take Flash IGN + Galeforce it's not bad
Irelia
Take Ignite
Look for poke trades with phase rush to get her within like 80% HP and then all-in her
Fiora
Statchecks you + Outscales you (She can parry your Q on reaction)
4/17/2023, moved this matchup down to Even because the repeated nerfs to Ravenous Hydra, Fiora, Goredrinker, Death's Dance, Divine and Grasp have made this matchup survivable in the Early/Mid game, allowing you to look for a solo kill via. Pure Statcheck in the mid game. Mortal Reminder is really good into Fiora because it gives you GW and armor pen vs. Death's Dance.
Dr. Mundo
You get a free laning phase, build Stridebreaker + LDR + Chempunk + Navori + PD and then he can't really play.
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Jax
When you're trading versus him, auto -> e to start off. If he activates E, murder him. If he saves it for your q, whip and disengage with phase rush. You can get a huge lead early this way.
Only reason this matchup isin't in "Tiny" is because Jax is really overtuned right now.
Mordekaiser
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Matchup is harder if you struggle mechanically.
Sett
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Tryndamere
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Warwick
Since WW has to auto minions to sustain up damage you deal to him, he is always pushing into you. Knowing this trick alone will save you. Take trades with him to force him to lifesteal, and survive that way. Taking Ignite forces him to lifesteal even more because you have more threat.
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
K'Sante
Outscale lane but he auto pushes into you because of his AOE
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Ornn
Buy Hullbreaker and do not let him ever teamfight.
Eventually you literally just tank his damage and hit the tower in front of his face
Kled
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Kennen
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Udyr
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Urgot
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early statcheck which can lead into invade shenanigans
Shen
SUPER easy matchup
Farm Lane -> You perma force him side and Q cancel his ult and he's REALLY sad now
You can literally ignore him and just hit tower, if he tries to taunt you break tower aggro and then keep hitting it
Nasus
Perma Proxy with Phase Rush. Ignore his stack + CS count, your job is just to perma invade the enemy JG and make them want to uninstall the game. Nasus has such awful waveclear + MS that he can't stop you. You should get a 6k gold lead and make their enemy jg 3 levels behind at a minimum by 30 minutes. Here's a masterclass of this strategy:

Olaf
Take Ghost Ignite. Outscale lane but you also dive them 24/7 the second you get mythic item.
Azir
The odds that you go against an Azir Top, especially a GOOD Azir Top is SUPER rare. However, he has so much disengage potential that even jg ganks can't save you from this matchup.
Anivia
Read Azir
Heimerdinger
Read Azir
Gwen
Statcheck Lane
Don't go for extended trades and you're all good
Karma
Like the Azir matchup but you're not super scared of dying
Gangplank
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is not in "Tiny" is because he still pushes you in with his early trial by fire damage which can lead into invade shenanigans
Oh yeah we outscale GP. Not something you would usually expect, but you can tank a barrel with your W/disarm one with your high atk speed/Run out of the way with your high ms/buy EON and then one shot him. It's really funny.
Aatrox
Aatrox is really good at beating immobile champions early game, and Garen is a scaling immobile juggernaut. That being said as the game goes on you get more mobility and start to statcheck him. Reminder that every time he misses a Q on you, that's 15 seconds he can't punish you + he pushes the wave into you. After mythic you can run him over. Rush tier 2 boots always.
Tahm Kench
What happens is he's going to setup a freeze with his sustain and you can't extend trades long enough for it to hurt or he can ult you. You're going to lose a LOT of CS in this matchup. Luckily your gold generation is very high out of laning phase, but this is still a very hard matchup.
Hullbreaker is super good here because TK has less waveclear than Shen.
Sejuani
Farm Lane -> Outscale
Reason this matchup is in
"Tiny" compared to the other farm lanes is because Sejuani has 0 kill pressure on you, ever which allows you to get many more last hits compared to a lane like Darius.
Yasuo
Garen Buffs made this matchup 9x easier and now you can just roll over him with Ignite/Galeforce situationally
Akali
Akali is really good at punishing you when you go for last hits. Along with her really large lethal range post 6, you have to give up a lot of last hits to stay healthy. Hullbreaker is really good in this matchup as Akali has horrible waveclear.
hello! these notes are a way for me to write down my knowledge from Garen. I published them incase anyone wanted to look at them, but do note that I have no clue what the **** i'm doing and am still platinum, so don't take anything i say without a grain of salt.
Summary of the Garen Agenda
Typically you're conceding early because Garen's early game is awful. Once you hit 6 + get berserker's greaves you start coming online. Level 11 is a huge spike becauseyour ult does much more damage based on how many points you have in it. Level 16 is cool but also doesn't matter much because you're typically overkilling people late game.
Play Garen like a mid game carry. This champion @ 1-4 items with farm is almost impossible to stop in the sidelanes simply because he either has more items than you (his waveclear/jg camp clear is really good) or because he chunks you with a really uninteractive phase rush combo without counterplay. Late game this stops working because he starts to get outscaled.
Take yellow/blue trinket and try to sidelane (blue when vs champions you cannot facecheck eg. Camille, otherwise yellow). Try to dive your enemy laner, get tower damage by ignoring their harass or using your prio to flank an objective teamfight. You want to use your quick rotations, super fast waveclear and infinite sidelane sustain to dominate everyone you meet.
Garen's Ult Ranges
Rank 1: 120 + 20% Max HP
Rank 2: 230.769 + 23% Max HP
Rank 3: 333.333 repeating + 25.9% Max HP
Playing Unfairly
A problem that I see often is that Garen Players tend to play very stock standard, almost like they're in LCS. They'll push waves, take camps, and show up at teamfights. I think this is because Garen is viewed as a learning champion/honest champion, so people don't try and go for plays/picks with him. What I started to realize is that in the mid game, making plays eg: taking sweeper and sitting in a buff bush/shadowing a teammate is really powerful and is underestimated, espcially on a champion with as much burst as Garen.
How summs effect your builds
Ghost is better with high damage builds
Ignite is better with tank builds
This is because these summoners help you round out your builds.
It's important to note though that it's ok to do both for example when I'm playing vs Fiora I'll go full unga bunga crit ignite
