Introduction to Jungle Control Nunu

Update for Season 4 in progress

Welcome to RockJockey's Jungle Control Nunu Guide!

Want to Rule the Jungle like no other?
Want to steal Enemy Buffs constantly?
Want to sneak Dragon the instant it spawns?
Want to sneak Baron before 20 minutes in?

Then this is the guide for you. Nunu is the master of controlling the Jungle. I will teach you to be the terror of the Jungle. Stroll through the Jungle with ease and acquire Buffs at your leisure.

Goal of this Strategy: Jungle Control Nunu prioritizes getting Jungle Objectives first, then ganks second (ganks are still important). For reference, getting an Early Dragon at 7 minutes will bring 150 gold x 5 Allies = 750 gold. 750 gold is worth 2 1/2 ganks. At 15 minutes, an Early Baron is worth 300 gold x 5 Allies =1500 gold + Baron Buff. And the surprise on your Allies and Enemies faces when they see that you Soloed Baron = Priceless.

"I am in your Jungle, eating your Buffs." NomNomiconNom Nom Nom.

Runes and Masteries

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

Glyph of Attack Speed: procs Hunter's Machete and Mastery: Butcher more often.
Seal of Armor: Flat Armor to reduce monster damage.
Scaling Magic Resist: Scaling Magic Resist to reduce Enemy and Baron's Magic Damage. Alternatively, you can use Flat or Scaling Armor to reduce monster damage.
Quintessence of Spellvamp: 6% Spellvamp

Utility
Meditation: Mana Regen is always good on Mana-based Champions.
Wanderer: Bonus Movementspeed is always good, this Mastery could be ranked up to 3 instead of Meditation if you believe it is worth it.
Expanded Mind: More Mana es bueno. I prefer this over 10% Reduction off of Summoner Spells. It means more Ice Blasts I can toss.
Transmutation: 3% Spellvamp / 3% Lifesteal. This Mastery is indispensable, it will be necessary if you want to Solo Dragon or Baron.

Defense:
Durability and Veteran's Scars: More Health es bueno
Hardiness and Tough Skin: More Armor to survive longer in the Jungle
Bladed Armor: Returns Damage to Jungle Monsters for Faster Jungling

Offense:
Fury: or Sorcery: 4% CDR means more Q: Consume and more E: Ice Blast. Fury means you can Auto Faster. Your Choice.
Butcher: More Damage on Auto Attacks to clear Jungle faster.

Skills

Skill Order: R>Q>E>W

Q: Consume:
Cooldown: 17 / 15 / 13 / 11 / 9 seconds
True Damage: 500 / 625 / 750 / 875 / 1000
Health Restored: 90 / 130 / 170 / 210 / 250 (+.75 per ability power)

Max first because this is the spell you will be using to sneak a Solo Dragon and Baron. Consume deals Massive True Damage to Jungle Monsters and heals Nunu alot. Spellvamp has full Single Target effect on Consume. After you finish WoTA, you will have 29% Spellvamp, essentially doubling the amount of Healing you get from this spell. This self-heal can be further increased by picking up Spirit Visage.

Math:
With only 40 AP and 34.8 Spellvamp from a combination of WoTA, and Spirit Visage, Consume will heal for 336(Base Heal X 1.2) + 348(Spellvamp) = 684 Total Health. At 40% CDR, Nunu can continuously Consume every 5.4 Seconds, equalling out to 126.66 Health per Second.

W: Blood Boil:
Cooldown: 15 seconds
Attack Speed: 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% / 45%
Movement Speed: 8% / 9% / 10% / 11% / 12%

Movespeed and Attack Speed Buff. Helps you kill monsters quicker and gets you from A to B. Max Last

E: Ice Blast:
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Magic Damage: 85 / 130 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+1.0 per ability power)
Slow: 20% / 30% / 40% / 50% / 60%

On Demand Slow. Max Second. This is a good slow and Damage, but with this strategy, you are trying to get Jungle Objectives over ganks. This spell is Single Target and therefore gives full Spellvamp.

Math: With only 50 AP and 34.8 Spellvamp from a combination of WoTA, and Spirit Visage, Ice Blast will heal for 109.62 Total Health. At 40% CDR, Nunu can Ice Blast every 3.6 Seconds, equalling out to 30.45 Health per Second.

R: Absolute Zero:
Cooldown: 110 / 100 / 90 seconds
Minimum Magic Damage: 78 / 109 / 141 (+0.3 per ability power)
Magic Damage: 625 / 875 / 1125 (+2.5 per ability power)

This spell isn't very useful to Jungle Control Nunu. I still level it up at 6, 11, & 16. I use it simply as the first spell when I start Baron. Or to farm creep waves. Or to kill opponents.

Itemization

Item Sequence

Spirit of the Spectral Wraith 2000
Frozen Heart 2500
Spirit Visage 2900
Ruby Sightstone 1600
Abyssal Mask 2400

Jungle Control Nunu needs specific Items in an exact order to be able to successfully dominate the Jungle. The Stats Nunu needs in order of descending importance are: Spellvamp > Armor > CDR > Health > MR > AP.

(Unfortunately with my Core Items + Spirit Visage, Nunu will have 54% CDR, 14% over the limit. This isn't a huge deal considering how necessary each of the items are for Jungle Control Nunu.)

Core Items
Ninja Tabi: +45 Mvspd, 25 Armor, and Passive: REDUCE ALL AUTO ATTACKS BY 10%. This includes Auto Attacks from Dragon and more importantly Baron.

Will of the Ancients: 20% SV, 50 AP, 10% CDR, & Mana Regen. 20% Spellvamp is necessary to be able to tackle Dragon and Baron. Spellvamp works on Q: Consume and E: Ice Blast and less importantly on R: Absolute Zero.

Warden's Mail: 50 Armor: this is the most amount of Armor for it's cost (1000).

Meta-Core Itemization: (Meta=After)

Warden's Mail: builds into either =>
Frozen Heart: 95 Armor, 400 Mana, and Aura: -20% Attack Speed. Or into =>
Randuin's Omen: 70 Armor, 700 Health and Active Aura: Slow Attack Speed and Movespeed.
Both items give good stats, however, if you want to Solo Baron, Frozen Heart gives 20% CDR, and I need the CDR and +25 Armor more than I need the Health. Frozen Heart gives nearly everything Jungle Control Nunu needs in the early game. The Armor gives Nunu the Tankiness he needs to handle Dragon and Baron. The Basic Items can be bought piecemeal. The Aura is great for Teamfights.
--(The only downside is that once you complete Spirit Visage, you will have +54% CDR, 14% more CDR than you can use. This isn't a huge waste, but it is something to consider.

Spirit Visage: 400 Health , 55 MR, 20% increased Healing from ALL SOURCES. This includes Spellvamp and the heal from Q: Consume. This is a great overall Item for Jungle Control Nunu, so I highly recommend it, especially if you want to Solo Baron.

Ruby Sightstone: 360 Health & Active: 3 Wards. Health is good, and the extra wards will help you maintain map awareness of key Jungle Objectives. This item is not a necessity, so it can be traded for whatever you find necessary.

Abyssal Scepter: 45 MR, 70 AP & Aura: -20 MR for Enemies. This item gives you more resistances and AP and MR Reduction to make your teams Magic Damage Spells bite harder. This item is not a necessity, so it can be traded for whatever you find necessary.

Alternate Itemization: Anything you buy after the core Items depends on the situation.
Purely Support Items
-Shurelya's Reverie: 10% CDR + Health + Active: AoE SpeedBoost. Super Speedy Nunu!
-Twin Shadows: 40 AP + 40 MR + Active: Twin Ghosts. Stalks and Slows 2 Enemies.
-Ohmwrecker: Usually never picked up, but if you are ahead and want to push turrets, this might be a good item.

Ability Power
-Liandry's Torment: 15 Flat MR Pen + Health + Health Shred. Good item to make your spells bite and to shred Tanks. Combo's well with your E: Ice Blast's Slow + Damage.
-Rod of Ages: 80 AP + 650 Health + 650 Mana. Great item on AP Junglers actually, but normally a Jungler cannot afford to buy one under 20 minutes.
-WoTA: 50 AP + Aura: 20% Spell Vamp + 30 AP. Great Item. All Champions can take advantage of Spell Vamp to some extent, even a Champion like Riven can make use of it.
-Morellonomicon: Spells apply Grievous Wounds against Opponents at 40% Health or Lower: Pick this up against opponents who drain-tank your Team through Lifesteal or Spellvamp or or through abilities. Denying them the ability to heal can change how teamfights will end.

Big Ability Power Items
-Rabadon's Deathcap: Honestly which AP Scaling Champion wouldn't want one of these.

Health and Resistances
-Banshee's Veil: Takes the edge off of poke.
-Locket of the Iron Solari: 10% CDR + Little bit of everything. Aura: Bonus Resistances for your Team.
-Frozen Heart: 95 AR + 400 Health + 20% CDR + Aura -20% AS.
-Warmog's Armor: 1000 Health + 1%Health Regen/5. Good item if you need tons of Health against Burst. I personally like Randuin's Omen better because of the Armor and the Utility.

Early Game Counter Jungling

-Purchase 1 Hunter's Machete, 1 sight wardSight Ward and 2 Health Potions.

Counter Jungling in the first Five Minutes depends on several factors
-Whether the Enemy Jungler normally starts at Blue or Red.
-If the Enemy Jungler can be harassed, like Fiddle or Amumu.
-If the Enemy Team counter-ward and intercept your Counterjungle attempts.

Counter Jungling: What does it mean:
This means actively stealing Enemy Jungle Monsters. Nunu is bred for counterjungling. He can keep it up 24/7. You can decide for yourself if you want to counterjungle for the entire game or only the first Red/Blue Buff or two.
-If you manage to steal the first Red Buff from your Enemy, this will leave the Enemy Jungler behind in Levels, Gold and makes their ganks pitifully weak. A Jungler without a Red Buff is crippled.

Early Game Options:
1) Steal Enemy Blue
2) Steal Enemy Red before your Blue
3) Steal Enemy Red after your Blue. And/Or Solo gank the Enemy Jungler at their Red.
4) Steal Enemy Blue and Red

1)Steal Enemy Blue Strategy:
1) Quickly run to the Enemy's side of the map without being seen. Place a ward in the bush next to the Blue Golem Camp so that you can see the Blue Buff.
2) Wait in the brush above your Red Buff until 1:57.
3) Run to the wall next to the Blue Golem Buff and attempt to Smite the Blue Buff away from the Enemy Jungler. Most Junglers get a Smiteless Blue, so this should be rather easy.
4) Run to your Blue or Red Buff with the knowledge that you just made the Enemy Jungler's life very hard.

2)Steal Enemy Red before your Blue Strategy:
1) Quickly run to the Enemy's side of the map without being seen. Place a ward in the bush next to the Wraith Camp so that you can see the Enemy Jungler coming towards his Red before he gets there.
2) Wait in the bush behind Enemy Red Golem.
3) Kill the Red Golem.
4) Run to your Blue or Red Buff with the knowledge that you just made the Enemy Jungler's life very hard. The Enemy Jungler's ganks will be nearly harmless since they don't have the Red Buff slow.

3) Steal Enemy Red after your Blue. And/Or Solo gank the Enemy Jungler at their Red. Strategy.
1) Get a Smiteless Blue on your side.
2) Either:
--a)steal the Red Buff before the Enemy Jungler gets there.
--b)wait to steal the Red Buff after the Enemy Jungler tanks it.
--c)wait to steal the Red Buff while the Enemy Jungler tanks it, then kill the Enemy Jungler.
3) Run to Enemy Red and wait in the bushes for the Enemy Jungler to arrive. 90% of the time, Junglers don't check the bushes for Enemy Junglers.
4) Let the Enemy Jungler tank the Red Golem for a while, then Smite/Consume to steal the Red Buff.
5) Ice Blast the Enemy Jungler and Auto Attack him to death. He will either flash away or die.

4) Steal Enemy Blue and Red (This may require 2 wards)
1) Quickly run to the Enemy's side of the map without being seen. Place a ward in the bush next to the Blue Golem Camp so that you can see the Blue Buff.
2) Wait in the brush above your Red Buff until 1:57.
3)Run to the wall next to the Blue Golem Buff and attempt to Smite the Blue Buff away from the Enemy Jungler. Most Junglers get a Smiteless Blue, so this should be rather easy.
5) Run to the bushes below the Enemy Red Buff and wait for the Enemy Jungler to arrive to take their Red. (if the Enemy Jungler doesn't come take their Red, that means they took yours. Proceed to steal their Red Buff if they don't arrive soon.)
6) Let the Enemy Jungler tank the first few hits, then Consume away the red Buff.
7) Solo gank the weak Enemy Jungler that has no buffs if you feel mean.
8) Walk away with 2 Buffs and a kill, proceed to your own two Buff camps and acquire them.

The first 7 minutes are the busiest Nunu will be in the whole game. After the first wave of Buffs have been cleared and before the second wave of Buffs 5 minutes later is when you have to decide what to do next.
-Sometimes it is better to continue counterjungling, keeping the Enemy Jungler so completely occupied and underleveled and underfarmed that they cannot help their team. If you are successful, it will be like a 5v4, the Enemy Jungler will be worthless. If the Enemy Jungler ignores your counterjungling and goes for ganks instead, depending on the success of these ganks, it may counter your counterjungling.
-Sometimes it is better to gank a lane or two after counterjungling. Whether or not the gank is successful, it will give you map presence, making the lanes wary of you popping out.

My Personal Jungling Route

I prefer Stealing Enemy Red, then immediately ganking Top or Mid Lane.

Pros:
-You will be level 2~3
-the Enemy Top/Mid Laner will only be level 1 and have no escapes except Flash.
This first gank is unexpected and usually successful. In addition, the Enemy Jungler will be behind in Levels and XP and Gold and the lack of a Red Buff cripples their ganking potential for the first 7 minutes of the game, putting them even further behind. This strategy usually snowballs your lanes early with kills and castrates the Enemy Jungler and making him useless.

Con:
The one downside this strategy has is that you will be unable to gank bottom for at least the first 3~5 minutes or even longer.

At 7 minutes, I will be at the Dragon pit as it spawns and I will slay it when it appears.

I continue to counterjungle and gank lanes as I see fit.

At 15 minutes, I have to decide if I am ready to Solo Baron Nashor. If yes, I will do it then and there. If no, I will wait until the appropriate time and circumstances.

How to Solo Dragon

Dragon spawns at 7 minutes into the Game. At level 4-5, Nunu will have enough Health and Damage from his spells to be able to Solo Dragon. This is one of the trickier Jungle monsters to slay. By this time, you should have completed one or both of these items. Ninja Tabi & WoTA

1) Buy a Vision Ward to make sure Dragon is clear of wards. Wait to see if the Enemy Botlane and/or Enemy Jungler and/or Enemy Mid laner respond to your clearing out their wards.
2) Proceed to attack Dragon. Continuous AA and Consume Dragon until it is dead.
3) Run away.

If you are disturbed by the Enemy Jungler or others while soloing Dragon, be careful to not get out-Smited. Try not to die, but if you must die, try and smite the Dragon first.

How to Solo Baron

Baron Nashor spawns at 15 minutes. At level 12-15, Nunu will have enough Health and Damage from his spells to be able to Solo Baron Nashor. This is the hardest Jungle monster to slay. By this time, you should have completed three or more of these items.
Ninja Tabi -Necessary
WoTA -Necessary
Warden's Mail -Necessary
Spirit Visage

Elixir of Brilliance gives 10% CDR and some AP at a cost of 250. This is a good buy for Baron so that you can get the highest amount of CDR possible so that you can spam Q: Consume and E: Ice Blast.

1) Buy a Vision Ward to make sure Baron Nashor is clear of wards. Wait to see if the Enemy Jungler and/or Enemy Mid laner respond to your clearing out their wards.
2) I find it works best if I gank Top and/or Mid and send the Enemy back to Base so that you don't have interference.
-If you are unsure about your ability to Solo Baron, call in your Ally Toplaner. Toplaners generally have enough Resistances + Sustain to be useful at killing Baron without dying.
--Do not call in your Toplaner if that brings the Enemy Toplaner or Jungler, as this would ruin your chances to get a 15 minute Baron.
3) Proceed to attack Baron. Continuous AA and Consume Baron until it is dead.
-Becareful of Baron Nashor's Acid Rain (Wrath of the Ancients) ability, this deals massive amounts of Magic Damage. Constantly top off your Health with a Consume, but be wary and save your Consume and Smite for when you start to get low. The Healing you get from Consume + Spellvamp will keep you alive.
4) Run away with the Exalted Baron Buff. Your Allies will congratulate you and your Enemies will be amazed. "Nunu can Solo Baron!! WTF!"

If you are disturbed by the Enemy Jungler or others while soloing Baron, do what you think is best. Either ignore the Enemy Jungler and Smite Baron or run away and attempt it later.

Team Work

Remember to let your Teammates know what you are doing.

Statements I say in the Champion Select Stage:
-"Jungling" or "Prefer Jungling"
-"Lets Invade their Blue" (So everyone is on the same page as you when the game starts, this will mean you can get their with your team faster.)
-"I will not be ganking for the first 5 minutes, I'll be counter-jungling. Please play it safe."
-"I will solo Dragon early at 7 minutes."
-"I will solo Baron early at 15 minutes."

Early Game Ally Chat :
-"I'm going to steal Enemy Red first. Help please."
-"ADC and Support, take my Red, I'm Stealing theirs." (Your team will have two Red buffs and more XP and Gold)
-"Invade their Blue (or Red)."

Midgame Ally Chat:
-"Mid and Bot Lane, I'm going to solo Dragon. Don't help me because it will draw attention."
-"Mid and Top Lane, I'm going to solo Baron. Don't help me because it will draw attention."
-"Top Lane, please help. Let's do a quick and early Baron. I will tank."
