<Master> S13 LostFish - Vayne: On Wings of Night (working on update)

By LostFishEU
About me
I go by the name LostFish online and I have been playing League of Legends since season 3. I come from a MOBA background and used to play games such as Warcraft 3 DOTA and Heroes of Newerth. My first ranked season was season 4 and hit Platinum playing casually, then the next season I tried harder and got to Diamond. After that I played League of Legends more casually with friends and maintained Diamond. I started ranking again in Season 9 and hit Master within 2 weeks. I started Season 10 and got Grandmaster by playing Vayne. Now I am looking to achive Challenger.

I plan to make guides for other ADC's such as Draven Caitlyn Lucian and Twitch I will post the other champion guides below once they are done!

The Basic

If you are totally new to Vayne, I recommand going through the basic. If you have the basic knowledge of Vayne skip the basic by clicking Here

Night Hunter (Passive)

RANGE: 2000
COST: 0 mana
COOLDOWN: Non
Vayne gains 30 bonus movement speed when moving towards a nearby visible enemy champion

Gains a pulsing aura underneath her that indicate she has it active.

Tumble (Q)
RANGE: 30
COST: 30 mana
COOLDOWN: 4 / 3.5 / 3 / 2.5 / 2
Vayne dashes forward, though not through terrian., and her next basic attack within 7 seconds deals Bonus Physical Damage

Silver Bolts (Passive)

RANGE: 550
COST: No mana
COOLDOWN: Non
Vayne's basic attacks and Condemn apply a Silver Bolts stack for 3.5 seconds, up to 3 times. Attack a new enemy removes all stack from the previous target.

Condemn (Passive)

RANGE: 550
COST: 90 mana
COOLDOWN: 20 / 18 / 16 / 14 / 12
Vayne fires a heavy bolt at the target unit, dealing Physical Damage, knocking them back 475 units, and applying a Silver Bolts stack. If the target collides with a wall, they take bonus Physical Damage and are stunned for 1.5 seconds

Final Hour (Passive)

RANGE: Non
COST: 80 mana
COOLDOWN: 100 / 85 / 70
For a duration, Vayne gains bonus Attack Damage and triples Night Hunter's bonus. Additionally, Tumble gains cooldown reduction, and casting it grants invisbility for 1 second.
Early Game
Let us hunt those who have fallen to darkness...

Vayne is reasonably weak early game. She can deal quite a lot of damage once she gets a few levels on her Tumble (Q) combine with her Rune Press the Attack, but she will struggle vs strong early game champions such as Draven and Caitlyn. It will also depend on your support how your playstyle should be. If you are playing with a champion such as Pyke, Blitzcrank, Thresh, they should make them do the first move, then you follow up on it. If you are playing with an Enchanter support such as Lulu, Janna, Yuumi, Soraka, you should be the one making the first move.

There are two ways of building Vayne as for patch 13.18 (Keep in mind this might change) Blade of the Ruined King Statikk Shiv or Kraken Slayer as a first item

The Blade of the Ruined King Path

The early game depends on who you are against in lane. If you decide to build towards Blade of the Ruined King Keep in mind that Vampiric Scepter works really well against heavy poke lane such as Caitlyn, Ezreal, Varus, Lux, Vel'Koz This will gain access to regain your health. Another thing to note is that the earlier you get Vampiric Scepter the less useful it will be because you got no damage to lifesteal from. If you are vs a catcher such as Thresh, Blitzcrank, Pyke the best choice will be Berserker's Greaves to have a higher chance to dodge their core ability to setup a kill, otherwise start with Recurve Bow.

The Kraken Slayer / Statikk Shiv Path

You want to pick up Noonquiver as soon as possible, as it allows you to manage waves better thanks to the passive and get better CS overall. If you can't afford Noonquiver on your first back and end up with around 700 gold, you could pick up either Kircheis Shard because it synergize well with Tumble poke. Avoid Cloak of Agility as it is really weak early game. As stated above, getting Berserker's Greaves. Two Long Sword works as well for 700g back as you can last hit underneath towers with only one auto on ranged minions

A lot of the games depends on which champion you are versus. If you are versus champion such as Draven or Tristana you will find that they push a lot more than the usual ADCs, so you have to adept your playstyle and auto attack the minions more to make sure they don't die by the tower once you are pushed in. Thanks to Vayne's Condemn you will have an easy time setting up ganks for your jungler or hooks for your support because terrian is setup just by the towers, and not in the middle of the lane.

On Summoners Rift, there are two sides. Red and Blue, as you have probably figured out at this point. But they have actually advantages and disadvantages. The Red side has it a lot easier on the bot lane because of the big mountain that is blocking by the first tier tower. Therefore, you can freeze the wave right before the first tier tower to safely farm without worrying about ganks. You can also easier do a Flash Condemn play towards the mountain to set up a kill. They also have a easier time to get Dragon because of the paths that leads there.

If you are on the Blue side, you have to worry about the "Tri-Bush" and the river, but you will have access to red buff from the bot lane and Baron later into the game.
Mid Game
I release them from their pain...

The Blade of the Ruined King Path

Once you got your Blade of the Ruined King you will hit a small powerspike. Blade of the Ruined King allows you to take really good trades with your three auto attacks Press the Attack and Silver Bolts then disengage. Try to use that window once you see the enemy use their spells on your support or the minion wave. Once you gain access to Guinsoo's Rageblade You will became really strong and melt through any tanks you meet among the way. If you have an enchanter support ( Lulu, Nami, Janna) with Ardent Censer
Guinsoo's Rageblade will become even more powerful because of the pure attack speed gained from the enchanter.

The Kraken Slayer / Statikk Shiv Path

Getting your first mythic is a big spike in your damage, but you need your 3rd item to truly shine. After getting your first item you want to build towarsd Infinity Edge or Guinsoo's Rageblade. Both works depending on what you versus. If you are versus a tanky frontline, then Guinsoo's Rageblade works better. If you versus lower max health targets, then Infinity Edge works well.

You main goal as Vayne is to scale into the Late Game. You want to get as high CS and gold income as possible. Make sure to take tower plates, kills and even jungle farm DO NOT take the jungle farm if they are on that side of the map or about to be
Late game
Time for reckoning...

It is time to release the monster inside you. Vayne is a monster late game, combine her Silver Bolts true damage with Tumble invisibly and ADC scaling items, you will become the main villian for the enemy team. You have self peel using your Condemn and Tumble to avoid them getting to you. Your main goal in a teamfight is to stay alive, even if it cost damage from you. Make sure to optimize your build according to enemy team. If you are versus heavy AD make sure to pick up your Guardian Angel / Randuin's Omen or vs AP Maw of Malmortius/ Wit's End

Remember that Tumble grants Vayne 1 second invisibility while Final Hour is active. This doesn't seem like a long time but can save your life if you don't immediately auto attack after the Tumble and wait for backup. Vayne can actually survival longer time than most people think, I showcase this in one of my clips below Right Here!

In order to become a successful Vayne player, you need to master how to kite with Vanye during a teamfight with both Tumble and movement If you are not sure how to kite I recommand checking out the kiting section Here!

Make sure to stand next to your Enchanter support if you got one and then give them Hell...
Items

Blade of the Ruined King is one of the core item for Vayne It grants Physical Damage and Attack Speed which are both great stats, but the important is the passive and life steal from Blade of the Ruined King The passive grants her a huge damage boost combined with Guinsoo's Rageblade and the life steal from Blade of the Ruined King makes Vayne laning much easier. The active is a crucial part of Blade of the Ruined King The active deals 100 Magic Damage to an enemy champion and steals 25% Movement Speed from the target for 3 seconds. The movement speed helps her in skirmishes and 1v1s vs melees by kiting and also grants her a higher chance to dodge certain abilities which gives an edge in the skirmish. The raw Magic Damage from the active is not too bad either, even when you are vs a range and nothing to dodge, it could still be useful as it is an instant cast.
Guinsoo's Rageblade has the most powerful item passives in the entire game for Vayne. Every third basic attack triggers on-hit effects an additional time. This means that the Silver Bolts from Vayne will activate twice on every third auto attack. Blade of the Ruined King's passive also procs twice every third auto attack which makes Vayne shred through tanks like butter. But not only that, she also activate her Press the Attack which makes them take even more damage. As you can see by the description, this item is a huge powerspike for Vayne
Not too much to say about Berserker's Greaves It grants a huge amount of attack speed for 1100 gold, even more Attack Speed than Phantom Dancer for 2600 gold. They are the only damage increase for basic attack boots in the game, which makes them a go to item. You could also built Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi against heavy damage dealers (More info about them below)
Infinity Edge won't be used in this build because of Infinity Edge Unique passive that counter Guinsoo's Rageblade passive. However, there is a build path that goes Kraken Slayer, Phantom Dancer and Infinity Edge which works really well also for Vayne, giving her that big 3 item spike after completing Infinity Edge
Death's Dance could be a great item choice if you are versus a team with heavy Physical Damage burst Assassins. It gives a good amount of Armor and Attack Damage with a great unique Passive. Usually a 4th-6th item to pick up.
Mortal Reminder is a great item vs champions that rely on healing the 40% healing reduce up to 60% from Grievous Wounds make a world of difference. I recommand to buy this item only if they have fed champions on opposite team such as: Vladimir Darius Soraka Warwick Volibear and Dr. Mundo. Even though the armor penetration is a nice damage boost, as Vayne you already have the anti-tank kit built in already, therefore it is not needed for anti-tank
In most scenarios, Lord Dominik's Regards won't be needed. As Vayne you have enough anti-tank in your kit already. However, if their team is really heavy armor reliant, such as Ezreal Iceborn Gauntlet ADC, Tank support, tanky Jungler and tanky Top laner, Lord Dominik's Regards could grow to be useful. On top of that it grants a great 35 pure Attack Damage boost.

KRAKEN SLAYER
VS

STATIKK SHIV
Kraken Slayer is a real tank killer, even though Vayne melt tanks already with her Silver Bolts this adds the cherry on top. It also synergizes well with Vayne's Press the Attack and Silver Bolts making the target lose a massive amount of Health after that third auto attack. It also works well with an Ardent Censer support because you will get more Kraken Slayer hits out. Kraken Slayer

I recommand Kraken Slayer If you are versus heavy tanky team comp, or if you have an Ardent Censer support that grants you attack speed.
Statikk Shiv Statikk Shiv works really well with Vayne's kite just because she is lacking wave clear, which this item helps a lot with. It also helps you to play weakside of the map because you can destroy the enemy minion wave before it hits your tower. It doesn't scale as well as Kraken Slayer as it scales with AP dmg and not AD so keep that in mind.

I recommand Statikk Shiv If you know your support will roam a lot and need the extra wave clear in your teamcomp or a chaotic game. If you not versus a lot of tank killer then this will be better

Spirit Visage is a great item because with this you will gain bonus healing from your Blade of the Ruined King and also your runes. Another thing to note is that the passive increases ALL healing. This means that the healing supports will also heal you more. I recommand this item vs heavy poke or AP heavy champions that kills you more slowly such as: Morgana Fiddlesticks Karthus Anivia and Teemo
Is a really good item vs AD assassins. Guardian Angel has pure AD that boost your damage and also gain a huge amount of armor. The unique passive is one of the most powerful item passive in the game. After the assassin used their ultimate on you they will need to kill you again but this time without it. By the time you get back to life their Assassin might be dead already. I recommand this item vs: Rengar Kha'Zix Kayn Vi and Nocturne
This item is great vs heavy Magic damage nukers while also gaining a lot of AD to your damage pool. One thing to note is that Immortal Shieldbow and Maw of Malmortius does not work together! They share an unique passive called "Lifeline" I recommand this item vs heavy AP nukers such as Lux, Syndra Zoe Veigar, Evelynn and Annie

-OR-

Plated Steelcaps > ARMOR
This is the most powerful tank item in the game. It gives 20 flat armor resist and on top of that it gives a huge defensive passive "Blocks 12% of the damage from basic attacks." for 1100 gold, this is an insane vaule. If you are vs heavy Physical Damage in the enermy team, i highly recommand buying a pair of these.

Mercury's Treads > TENACITY
These ones are not as powerful as Ninja Tabi but still very strong. It gives a great boost of flat Magic Resist by 25, and reduce the durations of Crowd Control by 30% This is great vs Champions such as Morgana and Leona etc.

AKA Quicksilver Sash is great vs champions that rely heavy crowd control such as Ashe Enchanted Crystal Arrow, Morgana Dark Binding, Lux Light Binding , Sejuani Glacial Prison, Elise Cocoon, Skarner Impale, Malzahar Nether Grasp, Another thing to note is that quicksilver works against Mordekaiser Realm of Death It also has a decent Attack Damage, Life Steal and Magic Resistance.
Because of Vayne's high attack speed combined with Rageblade it might be a good idea to build Wit's End What makes Wit's End good is that it deals bonus magic damage which makes a huge difference. You might ask yourself why that is a big deal Guinsoo's Rageblade gains 3 unique passives, one is has "15% Magic Penetration" the other is "Deal an additional 15 magic damage on-hit" and the third is of course "Every third basic attack triggers on-hit effect an addtional time" this makes it so you will deal massive amount of Magic damage on their tanks that might build full armor towards you. And you will also have your Silver Bolts to melt their % HP and the extra Magic Resistance is always a bonus.

Runes and Whys

PRECISION
Press the Attack: This rune fits Vayne perfectly. It activates after 3 consercutive basic attacks then deals 40-180 bonus adaptive damage. Not only does it deal damage after 3 basic attacks, it also activates vulnerability on the target. When the target is Vulnerable, they take 8-12% more damage from all sources. One thing to note is that your support will also deal x% amount of damage on the target, making it easier for AP supports to nuke the target. This also synergize well with
Vayne's Silver Bolts 2 basic attacks and one Tumble auto deals massive amount of damage and can lead them to half HP midgame. One common myth I hear all the time
from Vayne players is that Press the Attack is great because you get the bonus damage on Silver Bolts from the vulnerability, but this is actually not ture because the Silver Bolts are considered true damage and true damage can not be modified.

Lethal Tempo: This rune is an interesting one. Vayne benefit greatly from Attack Speed, which this runes gives tons of. But this is not the only thing Lethal Tempo does, it has a "Hidden" buff that allows you to temporarily exceed the attack speed limit. This is massive if you play with a Lulu support.
Combine Blade of the Ruined King Guinsoo's Rageblade
Ardent Censer Lulu Whimsy and Lethal Tempo makes you a living killing machine that can shred tanks like paper. I do not recommand Lethal Tempo if you play with a non- Ardent Censer support because the other runes are just too strong to miss out.

Fleet Footwork This is the best sustain rune for most ADCs, and as you might have guess, Vayne's early game can be rough. This rune makes laning against heavy poke much easier. Another thing to note is that Fleet Footwork also gives you a small movement speed buff that could either secure a kill or help you kite away from a melee champion. I recommand Fleet Footwork if you have a rough time vs heavy poke or want to increase your sustain in laning.

Triumph This is the go to rune for most ADCs. This gives a massive heal on takedowns and grants also additional 20 gold, which could stack up quite quickly. Your goal as an ADC is to survival as long as you can in a teamfight, and gaining a 12% heal make a world of difference in terms of survivaling in a teamfight. Also on the botlane you will be against 2 players, that makes it after you kill one of them, you will gain the massive heal before you start fighting the remaining one, making it even more important to have.

Overheal On paper this rune looks awesome to have on
Vayne. You get the healing from Blade of the Ruined King and the other healing runes. But the shield of this rune is way to weak to be used. And on top of that you will in most cases not full HP in the laning phase against all the poke and skirmishes. If you are running with a support that brings a lot of healing this rune could actually be played, because the overheal from the support could be useful against a heavy poke lane.

Legend: Alacrity Pretty straightforward, Vayne scales really well with Attack Speed and also
Blade of the Ruined King and Guinsoo's Rageblade These stacks increases everytime you takedown a Champion or simply kill minions, the more stacks you have, the more attack speed. One thing to note is that Legend: Alacrity is the easiest to stack out of these 2.
Legend: Alacrity has a max stacks of 10 and starts with 3% Attack Speed even without any stacks!

Legend: Bloodline This used to be my go to rune.
As Vayne I really enjoy having a lot of life steal, it makes the laning so much easier in terms of sustain. The reason why I chose to go with Legend: Alacrity is simply because the Attack Speed is too big to miss out. If you are going Blade of the Ruined King build, you won't need Legend: Bloodline anyway to sustain. However, if you go Kraken Slayer you might not have access to any lifesteal in a while, then Legend: Bloodline will be worth it Legend: Bloodline Also scales really well late game. It can stack up to 20 times, combine this with your life steal from items and the other runes and maybe even a Spirit Visage it creates massive life steal and can get you to full hp by a few auto attacks.

Coup de Grace This one is simple. Cut Down is vs tanks which Vayne already melts, Last Stand increases when you are low which you never want to be as an ADC, also your life steal will counteract this. As an ADC you also want to take the kills in order to carry late game, and Coup de Grace Makes it easier for that to happen.

RESOLVE

Second Wind Works well when trading with 3 auto attakcs in laning phase with the combination of Silver Bolts Getting that extra sustain when vs poke makes it so Vayne can stay longer in lane, which in terms increases her gold income to get to her powerspike sooner

Overgrowth is a nice bonus in your health pool, because Vayne is one of the best ADCs who "Scales" well with more defense. Her main damage comes from Silver Bolts and if you got Guinsoo's Rageblade already, it makes it even easier to put out your damage. Those extra AD/Offensive runes are not as needed

First will be the Offense shards
Adaptive Force Attack Speed and Ability Haste Because Vayne scales really well with Attack speed, the Attack Speed rune will always be the superior choice.

In the middle we have the Flex shards
Adaptive Force Shield Tenacity and Slow Resist Because we are playing the ADC role, we want to put out as much damage as we can, and Adaptive Force is the only damage choice on this row, therefore we will go with the Adaptive Force

The last row is a bit more interesting, it will be the Defense shards
Flat Health Shield and Tenacity and Slow Resist to choice between. In 70% of the scenarios I would recommand the Shield because the damage will be Physical Damage from the ADC in most of the cases. However! There are cases when the support actually deals more damage than the ADC in laning, therefore, going with Tenacity and Slow Resist might not be a bad idea. Flat Health Could also benefit Vayne because it scales as you level, and as Vayne you become really powerful later into the game. Another thing to note is if you are vs heavy Physical Damage or Magic Damage team, you can swap to Shield or Tenacity and Slow Resist depending on their team composition
Advanced

Condemn Tricks

Vayne's Condemn is the most crucial ability she has. There are many uses for Condemn, I will list the most important ones below. But before we begin, you need to know about Cast Times. Almost every single ability in League has a small cast time. You might have not thought about it, but there is a small cast bar everytime you cast an ability. Why this is important to know is because you can do certain actions while it is casting. One example is Condemn Flash. You use your Condemn first and then Flash afterwards. That way, you will instantly fire away your condemn as soon as you Flash. Why this is important is because then you can position yourself for the Condemn into a wall stun instantly. I recommand you to go into practice mode and practice this combo multiple times. You can also introduce this to your warm up rutine. I will show you an example of the trick below

Once you have mastered Condemn - Flash, then you can move to the next Condemn trick, I call it the
"Frontal-Condemn-Flash" It works the same way as Condemn- Flash, but instead you stand towards a wall and bait the enemy towards the wall. The enemy will avoid standing towards the wall and will stand on the side facing away from the wall. But if you have Flash, you can trick him and use your Flash to get in a position where you can stun him. I will show one example in practice mode you could practice on, and another one in a live game where that trick helped me get a double kill.

There are other ways to use Condemn outside Flash Here are a example on how.

If you are really good at timing your Tumble's you could cancel a lot of abilities from the game by Tumble in the right moment. Here are two examples from my stream when I cancel Mordekaiser and Darius Ultimates

Vayne Clips
As Vayne you need to use your Final Hour stealth to survival when it looks grim. In this clip you can see how you can use your ultimate stealth combined with Tumble dodging to survival long enough for backup

Don't forget that your stun works towards all terrain, even champions abilities! This can create an element of surprise by using their ability towards them. Here you see an example of me using my Flash to dodge Jarvan IV knockup and then using my Condemn to stun him under tower for an easy kill.

In this next clip you will see how good Vayne's passive Night Hunter combined with Final Hour really is. You gain a massive amount of movement speed which makes it a lot easier to dodge skills shots. In this clip I dodged Graves End of the Line and also his Collateral Damage I also dodge Nami's Aqua Prison and Tidal Wave making me barely come out on top

Kiting

If you want to master the Vayne, you need to know how to kite. This goes for every single ADC. Always use one auto then move backwards one step then back to auto. I recommand using "A" (Attack move) and then move backwards. Here you can see a clip of kiting in action

You can also use attack move while moving forward. Simple auto the target then move towards them. The faster you are at it, the more chance you will have catching up to them and finishing them off.
If you are still confused, don't worry. I plan to upload a full guide on how to kite successfully as an ADC on my YouTube channel in the future

FAQ

Feel Free to ask me questions on Discord, Twitch.TV or in the comments and I will fill this one out more

What are your thoughts on frozen mallet/gargoyle on vayne?

Tank Vayne is actually one of my "Secret projects" I have been working on. I think that Tank Vayne could be a legit build. I have played some games on her in Diamond elo but i have never tried to push with tank Vayne. I want to write a guide about it or mention it in the guide but atm I have to little experience with it. I think that Frozen mallet combined with Rageblade, Ruined king, Wits end, Spirit Visage with the domantion tree as secondary could work. I have never heard of gargoyle Vayne tho, so i cant comment on that, might be something i could try out
Conclusion
This cover up the basic knowledge you need to know about Vayne to climb with her. Hopefully this will take you to your desired rank! Of course there is hours of more content I could write about and go through every single detail, but I want the readers to come out from this guide not too overwhelmed but at the same time an indepth look into Vayne as a Champion. I hope you got the knowledge you were looking for and I will do more Vayne guides and guides on ADCs in the future on both YouTube and in writing format.

This guide is 100% free and I put hours into this guide sharing my 9000+ hours knowledge on League of Legends. I will always answer DMs and if you add me on League you can always ask me a question anytime about anything. I also coach ADC on every server, feel free to reach out to me.
