Why Build Duelist?
Volibear is usually built as a fighter or as a tank. This build takes the best of both and puts them together. We build two damage items and build dueling runes, while also building a tank mythic and tank items towards the end. At the game's current state, Volibear is incredibly strong. He has great waveclear and poke with his passive, lots of health to spare, respectable damage, and high amounts of mobility and CC. This build puts it all to use and fills in the small weaknesses that this champion has.
Spells
Ghost synergizes well with your runes and will help with gap closing. Flash is a common spell that many champions take for its versatility. Flash is the only mandatory spell. You can bring Ignite for lane pressure and early kills, Teleport for split-pushing, and Smite if you take this build into the jungle (don't forget your jungling items, I recommend Hailblade). If you choose to build Teleport, Nimbus Cloak will have less value.
Runes
Volibear's high attack speed means that he can proc Conqueror easily and make use of Celerity. Nimbus Cloak can help gap-close even further in addition to his Q. The rest of the runes will help deal damage, provide tenacity and sustain in teamfights.
Items
For your starting item, your best bet is to go with Doran's Shield. Iceborn Gauntlet provides the CC needed to chase down enemies. Even though Volibear has extra movement speed built into his abilities, gap closing remains his main weakness. Furthermore, the extra health that is built from this item the more you build legendary items is extremely helpful in stacking health. Sterak's Gage is a great balance between damage and defense, so we take it as our second item. Blade of the Ruined King is yet another item that can help chase down enemies and provide sustain and damage in fights, as well as help with tankier opponents that you might face. Thornmail and Spirit Visage are your two tank items. Thornmail will help with armor and defend against lifesteal, and Spirit Visage will amp all your healing sources and shielding. Plated Steelcaps are great boots against auto attacking champions, Mercury's Treads are good against CC, and Ionian Boots of Lucidity will help reduce cooldowns. Elixir of Iron is the best elixir of Volibear, as if you are at the late stage of the game, you will most likely need help surviving over extra damage.
Quick Tips
- Use Sky Splitter behind your enemy, they will have the instinct to run away and right into the ability. This cuts off their escape unless they can afford to take damage and be slowed
- Your best combo without your ultimate is Q,E,W. Use Q to gap close, E to slow, Q to follow up with a stun and W to amplify your damage
- Your combo with your ultimate is R,E,Q,W. R onto the enemy and use E to cut off their escape. Follow up with a stun and an empower from your W.
- If you tower dive, you can use your ultimate to disable the tower for a few seconds.
- Don't forget to auto-attack between abilities to apply the passive slow from Iceborn Gauntlet.
