Introduction

Hey everyone, Thalose here, you may know of me from my Rammus guide. And I'm back to give some insight on how to play the new 5.8 Ryze. He's changed a bit and I say for the better. His new Passive makes him tankier and gives him an immense buff fairly often. So without anymore delay, lets get to it.

Pros/Cons

Pros
+ Scales well into the late game.
+ Naturally tanky with his new passive
+ Can be a big lane bully.
+ Decent sustain with his ult.
+ Amazing team fighting capabilities.

Cons
+ Not the most amazing early game. + No hard escapes. + Can be fairly mana hungry if not played correctly. + Item dependent.

Runes

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush
Now you're thinking, "Why gold gen?" well the answer is that like I said earlier. Ryze is item dependent. So is an extra 15 AP or 9 armor really going to help Ryze more than getting full build before everyone else? Magic Pen is fantastic on Ryze, period. His AP scaling is lackluster, and there's really no other option other than Hybrid Pen for marks. See Quints. You can go with either scaling or flat MR, but since Ryze is such a late game monster I like to be stronger then.

Masteries

My choice of 0/9/21 is because the utility page is fantastic on Ryze. More max mana, health regen from more mana, 10% CDR on summoners? Plus who ever complained about more movespeed. The GP5 is nice as well. Though you may have noticed I opted out of Intelligence. This is because when Ryze has his ult maxed, He gets a free 30% CDR steroid. So having anymore than 10% more CDR is just being wasteful.

Items

Obviously Core on Ryze, No real reason to get into much detail. However I personally don't upgrade Tear until I've got RoA, Luden's, and Boots.

Same situation as Seraph's. It's so core on tanky mages that there's nothing more to it.

If you haven't tried this item on Ryze yet get ready for some BS. This item gives such a huge power spike in damage that I'd never go without it. With his new passive, Ryze can proc this so fast it's unbelievable. With his ult, and Luden's together you can easily shred teamfights.

With Ryze having a free 30% CDR at 16 there really is no reason to build more. And spirit visage is just astounding on Ryze, since it gives him nothing but good stats.

Whether you build this or Visage first is up to you, however this item is so OP that it's hilarious. One of my favorite defense items in the game.

A decent replacement for Frozen Heart, however not as much tankiness. though more damage plus CC and doesn't go over 10% CDR. I prefer Spirit Visage but if you need some more armor, this item might do the trick.

A strong item on Ryze, though I'd rather have tank stats than try to heal it back. CC can stop drain tanks in their tracks, but pure tankiness might have a chance at least. Still, against teams with low CC, can be worth it.

Abilities

Every 5 casts Ryze gains a shield (25+5xlvl)+8% max mana. And everytime he casts a spell his other cooldowns will be reduced by overload's cooldown down to a min of .25 seconds. (At 40% CDR that'll be 2.4 seconds) Duration 3/4/5/6 seconds. Essentially just wait til you hit 4 casts annie style, then just spam like crazy. If used correctly under perfect circumstances you could cast 4 spells per second. thats 9.6 seconds of cooldown gone, you'll be able to ult twice in one activation of this passive during the late game. Just a tad OP

Skillshot: fires an orb, dealing 65/90/115/140/165 [ +0.55 AP ] [ + 2/2.5/3/3.5/4% of Maximum Mana ] magic damage to the first target hit. So Ryze will have a skillshot, I don't know about you, but I for one love that. Now granted it's scaling is a bit weaker, but I for one love being able to check bushes now.

Instantly roots a target for 0.75/1/1.25/1.5/1.75 second(s), dealing 65/95/125/155/185 [ +0.4 AP ] [ + 2.5% of Maximum Mana ] magic damage. Not much change, a bit of a nerf though. Less scaling and not as long of a root, But the base damage went up slightly.

Unleashes an orb that deals 50/66/82/98/114 [ +0.3 AP ] [ + 2% of Maximum Mana ] magic damage and reduces the Magic Resist of its target by 8/9/10/11/12% for 5 seconds, stacking up to 3 times.

After hitting, Spell Flux bounces to up to 6 nearby enemies and Ryze, before returning to the original target. Instances of damage on the primary target after the first deal halved damage (25/33/41/49/57 [+0.15 AP] [+ 1% of Maximum Mana]: Very Little actual change, percentage shred instead of flat, and half damage on multiple bounces to primary target.
Now passively grants 10/20/30% cooldown reduction
Buff duration decreased from 5/6/7 seconds to 4/5/6
Cooldown changed from 70/60/50 seconds to 80/60/40: All the changes to the ult, otherwise completely the same. Still awesome.

Early Game

Just play it safe and farm, your power is all from scaling. Harass here and there, but otherwise your goal is to farm and stay alive. Hugging tower would be the best choice.

Mid Game

If your team needs you, don't stay top and Nasus AFK. Still help them, but whenever you guys aren't taking objectives or team fighting, still try to farm it up. All you have to do, is survive the mid game assassin power-fest and you're golden.

Late Game

It's All Ogre Now! Basically once you hit your full build, you can walk into team fights, and knock their whole team half health. Just walk around blowing people up and rarely going below half health yourself. Obviously don't try to 1v5, you still have to play smart, but from hence forth you will require much less skill.
