Champion Build Guide

[S16] Renata Jungle Guide

By thermaI
Intro
HELLO SUMMONERS, I have been exclusively playing Renata Glasc jungle with my five stack for the past few months, making it all the way to 150k Mastery. After many suggestions, I have decided to write a guide on both my build + playstyle.

Renata Glasc is a very underutilized support champion. By putting her in the jungle, her weak early game is spent powerleveling camps and poking lanes. As a jungler, Renata has the opportunity to farm, gank, and even save her laners in ways other junglers could not.

Similar to Ivern, Renata is a support jungler that has a shield and powerful root. Although you'll spend more time clearing camps, her mobility and abilities allow for frequent poke ganks. Her abilities, namely her R + W, can also be used to contest and steal objectives. If played right, Renata has the ability to be a powerful support jungler that peaks mid to late game during teamfights.
How To Play
If you have never played Renata Glasc before, you should probably not play her jungle instantly. Renata is a support champion and as a result should be played like one in the jungle.

As mentioned earlier, Renata plays very similar to Ivern. You should be avoiding enemies, even your enemy jungler, unless you are 100% sure you win the fight. Heal is a powerful summoner for running away or mid-gank, granting her enough mobility to kite and not die instantly. Fortunately, her Q doubles as both a root and push, allowing you to run away from even the scariest assassins such as Rengar or Nocturne.

Clearing camps is quite easy, as your E both damages monsters and shields you. You should be clearing using your E and W. For larger monsters such as Red Buff, Blue Buff, and Gromp, hitting your Q and casting again in the opposite direction makes them stall by walking towards you, saving you from a few hits.

Early game, you should be getting kills for your teammates rather than yourself, which is already very easy with your kit. Renata's passive requires teammates to proc, making her more of a kill guaranteer rather than a kill securer. Once you scale however, you should be able to easily pick up some kills for yourself with your powerful long range autos or ultimate.
Jungle Path

This is the most efficient jungle path that I personally use, however you are free to jungle in your own way. This way counters invades + establishes jungle dominance, and is especially important against enemy junglers who are strong early that you can easily root and throw away.

This involves a Raptors start, skipping both Krugs + Red Buff in favour of clearing the entirity of blue side. By the time you finish Blue Buff and Gromp, you are level 3 and able to contest blue-side Scuttle with Smite. This way, you are able to engage or even take it from the enemy jungler if they started Red.

By saving both Smite for the two Scuttle, you are able to guarantee them, allowing you to continue back into your jungle for your Red Buff clear.
Gank Strategy
As Renata Jungle, your kit is specially made to support your team. Unfortunately, they have very high cooldowns making ability usage key to success. Once you get Ionian Boots of Lucidity, your Ability Haste will go up, making your kit far more useful.

When it comes to ganks, Renata’s ganks are less about damage and more about creating winning situations for your laners. Your best opportunity is to get behind enemy laners while still remaining at a safe distance. Your way of securing kills for your laners are Q, which can be used to both root and pull them closer to your laner in chase scenarios. The squishier the champ, the better. Slow & tanky champs are also good targets, as you're still able to fling them around with your Q. Your W is also a strong tool that can greatly support your laner during ganks if they are playing autoattack champions, as it grants them extra movement + attack speed.

It is important to note that you are most fast and powerful in the river due to Waterwalking and Celerity. Therefore, ganking lanes via river is most ideal for both speed in and out of the lane.

Leverage

Your passive does bonus magic damage and marks the enemy. When an ally attacks a marked enemy, it deals additional magic damage based on the target's maximum health. As a result, it is always good to auto attack at least once during ganks.

Loyalty Program

Your E both damages opponents and shields allies. For example, ganking a melee v melee lane and throwing your E in the fight would assist your laner heavily. It also serves as a general poke if it lands, which can still be beneficial to your laner.

Handshake

Your Q serves as both an escape plan for when you overextend and as a general root. Hitting a Q on champions and throwing them toward your ally is one of the most beneficial ganks you can do. Especially when your team are playing champions whose abilities need setup time, such as Gangplank or Vladimir, your Q's allow for them to gain the upper hand in fights.

In closer match lanes, especially if they can easily kill you during a gank, your Q can be used as a way to keep them at bay. Attacking them during a gank and hitting them with your E would obviously aggro them, so saving your Q as a safety root also works.

Bailout

Your W can be utilized to both revive your allies and grant them movement/attack speed. As a very situational ability, you should know the line between W'ing for lifeline vs W'ing for speed.

For example, if you are ganking botlane, its often good to W your ADC as they would better benefit from being able to chase + attack their enemy if it gets them a kill, rather than you saving it for when they die.

Hostile Takeover

Your R is a powerful ability that works best in teamfight scenarios, but out of all lanes it obviously works best bot lane due the fact there are multiple targets. During ganks, it also can be used as a second emergency form of root, which I only use to get the enemy laner off if they decide to focus me.
Securing Objectives
As a support jungler, Renata is not able to fully contest objectives on her own. Despite this however, her kit can very much be utilized to steal objectives.

Drake

It is not recommended to prioritize doing Drake early, as its best to prolong the Drake spawns until you are able to properly scale as a mid-late game champion. Obviously, if the enemy jungler is on it, it is worth contesting. Or, if your bot lane killed their laners and there is more than enough time to do it.

Voidgrubs

The first objective that should be on your mind is Voidgrub. Fortunately this season, Renata has the ability to now actually solo them properly. Despite this, you should still only do it if you have vision of the enemy jungler elsewhere, or if you have help from either top lane or mid lane. By the time Voidgrubs spawn, you should also have your ultimate, which is very powerful as Grubs is often one of the earliest team fights in the game.

Rift Herald

The next objective, Rift Herald occurs later in the game and is also solo'able by Renata. Again, you should only do objectives with the assistance of your team, or if you are 100% aware the enemy jungler is busy on the other side of the map.

Stealing Objectives

Due to inability to secure objectives, sometimes you are forced into stealing objectives, which Renata's kit allows her to do. Works best with Phase Rush, Waterwalking, and Celerity.

Renata is able to use her Q or R as a form of CC, allowing her to go in and Smite objectives. With Heal or Ghost, it is very easy to swiftly go in and out, way easier if you have support from your team.

In solo situations, her R also works to contest and steal objectives. If timed properly, you can also steal the objective directly with your R if they fail to smite it.
Special Thanks
Special thanks to JhinCombatSchool, the original Jhin mid, who has been a major inspiration to the way I play the game.
