Introduction
First jungle guide based on shen. He may not be the fastest but he is definitely not the slowest.
So Why Play Shen??
He has great survivability, especially post level 6. He has a great escape due to



Shen's map wide, global ultimate helps him apply pressure on lanes without him actually being there. It let's him roam around the jungle, continue his route without having to run across the map to gank. Synchronised with someone's jump like


Overall, shen is a great jungler, but he is played more to have fun than in the competitive scene. So if you are going for ranked games, he will usually hinder behind from the enemy's jungler such as

Runes
- greater quintessence of Desolation: // This Armour Pen helps you do more damage against the jungle camps, and can also help you slightly during ganks. I find this more beneficial than taking Armour pen marks and hp quintessences.
Greater Mark of Attack Speed: // Being quite a slow jungler, the increased attack speed will greatly improve the speed of clearances, especially early game.
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist: // General runes, gives higher and higher magic resist throughout the game.
Greater Seal of Armor: // Basic runes for most junglers. Combined with cloth armour, this guarantees a safe jungle route + health pots.
OptionalGreater Mark of Magic Penetration: // You can swap out around 3 AS Runes for this if you want to deal slightly more damage with poking or your E and Q Combo. However, i don't think it is as much beneficial than the extra attack speed.
Greater Quintessence of Health: // This makes you slightly more tanky but you wont do as much damage with your attacks. At most, i recommend only one of these, while keeping atleast two Armour Pen Quints
Thanks to a comment from, Mikuroo. We are adjusting from 1/15/14 to 1/18/11
For our masteries, instead of taking a more defensive route such as x/21/x
Taking the improved ghost in the offense tree.
Taking the improved smite, defence, magic resist and health masteries in the defense tree.
We are taking 11 points in utility so that we can reach movement speed. Shen needs this movement more than most junglers as he has quite a slow base speed.
We are removing the greed, as the gold gained isn't as beneficial and adding more movement speed, the more the better!

Your main objective being initiating.
This is when you and your team mates are forcing/starting the fight. It is best that you go in first and take any damage from their mage bursts. Your best bet is to taunt one player, allowing your team to focus on that player, and then the opposite team has to come in and help,. If you have someone like Ashe or Ahri, it would be better for them to initiate, and for you to taunt someone so that they useless for the period and that you don't take damage from all 5 of the opponents, or you could easily lose a chunk of health.

Hey, it provides immense health!! why don't you like it?
Well, simply because it's only health. I believe Shen will benefit more with items such as Rylai's whhich provide health, ability and even slow. Ability power will help most of his abilities as they all stack ability power. It makes you more tankier, more healthier, but it won't really benefit the teeam that much. However, this is only my opinion. I will however add a third build with warmogs, but i don't really recommend it over the first builds.
Shen solo top stands out in top from most solo top characters. you can easily lane against the likes of
Nasus
Irelia
Kennen
Gangplank and the other well knowns. You should stay in lane without having to recall until around level 6, and make sure that if you get a gank from your jungler or mid laner pre level 6, it will almost easily be a kill.
Always use your Shield if they are going to poke you, Land your q on the more healthy minions and get hits to restore your health. Try to taunt them near the tower in which they will receive at least one hit. If it's 2v1 solo top, try not to push too far, as the tower really is your best defence. You will need to practice last hitting next to tower, as your CS/Farm should be around the same as your mid laner if played correctly. Keep it warded and ask for ganks often
