He's the duel king, can chase you down and equal/trump your cc. If he gets ahead of you he can stomp you. If you get ahead of him he can still stomp you. (My personal ban)
Second hardest matchup. Obviously his ult rurnts yours and his dueling potential is pretty disgusting.
If he gets ahead it could be a long game for you. If not then I like the outscaling potential skarner has in this matchup. Must push the envelope early if he is behind and punish him. Only take duels if you hit your e and you have the spire or are very ahead.
He is very fast, which lets him counter gank and follow you around the map. He stacks his conqueror as fast as you do so it is difficult to outduel him if he is ahead. Very beatable though.
He can cleanse your cc and if you are fighting in the jungle (which I do a lot with this build on Skarner) it can become messy even if you have the spire.
He is tough to duel because of his ulti, if his R is down you should beat him with spire control.
You know, I haven't jungled against him in a long while but da bear is lowkey a beast. nuff said.
Still here? Good! Now for the MANY even to stomp matchups. Warwick can snowball the game, if you survive him into mid-late game its an easy dub.
Unlike WW, Kayn can be a problem late but is squishable early. Look to play in his face all game, scuttles are yours. drakes are yours. its all yours and make sure he knows that.
Ekko is super fun to play, super annoying to play against. This is a fringe hard matchup but I give the edge to skarner because of the tankiness.
Care for her burst early, after that you can win. much like ekko probably your best interest to rush mercs.
Squish the bug. Unless he gets huge early, its a very easy matchup.
With the new op items he/she(does anyone know yet) can be a problem but once you get on top of him/her its a wrap. Save your R for his/her R, then just drag him/her out that bich.
Cheese champ, even if he gets ahead, you hard outscale just damage control and try to counter gank where you think he will R. Don't let him spell shield your R, and if he does don't rq. (speaking from experience)
You stomp her once you get on top of her.
He's a tricky mofo but you should win unless he outplays you with boxes/clone.
It really depends on the skill level of the opposing lee. If they are just your average blind martial artist then you should be able to clap. When it comes to dueling, spire up and you are good to go, spire down care.
She has little/no cc, she usually has a rough first clear so may be able to invade her and get FB. If your lanes don't have prio, just double scuttle her. PRIORITIZE/WARD Drakes
Nunu & Willump
One of skarner's best attributes is his mobility. Nunu is one of the only champions in the game who can rival skarner's mobility especially with the common phase rush build run by many nowadays. He also provides a ton of cc and is very hard to kill. Nunu is underrated in my opinion so care because although he may not be able to kill you, he can thwart many of your plans such as ganks and dragons.
Don't have much experience playing against eve as skarner but I think it will be an easy matchup, she is weak early so do the patented double scuttle and don't be afraid of skirmishes. Mercs a good option.
Most Tanks are freelo for skarner, they are beefy but so are you, if you ever catch her out of position punish her.
110% stomp this mummy from beginning to end. He has no escape so look to invade him and ward his jungle. Easily punishable.
Early you can destroy the crazy doctor. Later you will have to rely on peeling your adc/mid to kill this beefy boy. Don't underestimate him and you should be good. Swiftys may be good if their team has a lot of slows and not a lot of hard cc.
Main thing is to keep your E until he starts sucking you off. If you do that then you should win this fairly easily. Get mercs for sure since his fear and silence last for eons.
Care for the vertical jungle cheese that the tree is commonly known for. if you suspect he is to start red then you start blue. His root is pretty easy top dodge with all the movement speed in your kit and if you ever catch him alone you can just chop through the tree with ease.
She's one of the best kiters in the game. That being said, you are super fast as well, for her to really do damage to you she will have to W into your range. That is your opportunity to E stun her/ R her.
He steals your move speed so a good tip is to wait for his q to hit you THEN use your W to close the gap. You should easily be able to survive his burst. Double scutt.
If you want a champion to counter yi, look no further than the scorpion. His immense cc completely locks down the master noob. Does anyone like Yi players? don't let up, abuse him because if he does get even a mini lead it could be ggs.
Honestly just a much worse Nunu. I'm never scared, you might not be able to kill him, but you can definitely outscale him. farm up, gank when possible and focus on them objectives.
I forgot Xin was a champ.... That being said skarner should destroy him as long as spire is up, even if xin is ahead.
If you ever see a Vi in ranked, make sure to let her know that everything she does, skarner does better. Not much to say here, dodge her q and it should be an ez win. Tank it to the face and you probably still win lol.
Last but not least is Zac. He's pretty good and is very annoying but like with most tanks, you can shit on him and outscale him hard. Cool tip, when he's slingshotting in, you can ult him.
SKARNER YUMMI IS BROKEN AF. Super fun might I add. 110% do recommend.
Continuing with the movement speed motif, Sivir's ulti with skarner makes for a hell of an scary engage.
Movement speed, enough said.
Pretty cool that if you flash and ult someone, thresh can lantern you out with your hostage for a sexy pick.
My friend Doug plays a nasty bird. Skarner excels when people can't escape them, so the bird's wall helps with that big time.
Any champ that has low cd hard cc makes for a nasty cc chain with skarner. If one of your laners has hard cc, could be worth camping.
Played with her a couple times and her cc is awesome with skarner. Not to mention the shields and movement speed, slowly becoming one of my fav champs to team up with.
Lastly, skarner thrives when he is the second initiator, at least with this build. So having a beefy boy in the top lane or a thicc girl like leona in the bot lane helps tremendously with this type of skarner build.
Champion Build Guide
Check out my Youtube channel where I post Skarner gameplay and guides.
Here are a few highlights from the start of S11 as I continue to try to climb and piece together the perfect build for all scorpions to conquer with:
- High Mobility
- Low Pick Rate (Rip Darius players)
- Great and UNDERRATED Dueling Potential
- Scuttle Control
- Unkillable Late Game
- Not Mechanically Intensive
- Can Be Kited
- Qss Is Annoying AF
- Teammates Won't Trust You When You initiate A 2v3 Even Though It's Free.
- Most underrated rune on skarner. This allows you to win duels early, 1v2 midgame, and 1v9 late. You get fully stacked extremely quickly because of your fast autos + .
- This is the best option because you have no mana problems so is useless and most of your lifesteal comes from conqueror which will not be fully stacked until you are below 100% hp, so no need for .
- Skarner's main weakness is being kited. This rune gives us the added tenacity we lack by opting to not go a tank mythic item. If the enemy team does not have a lot of hard cc, you can opt for for the extra attack speed and stompability.
- Synergizes extremely well with conqueror. Will allow you to keep pumping out damage while on your last stand. I have found it is better than and but both can be used if going against super squishy or super tanky teams respectively but I would say over 95% of the time I run Last Stand.
- MY FAVORITE RUNE ON SKARNER. Synergizes with our whole kit and build , , and . A MUST Take.
- Also synergizes with celerity well. Allows you to kidnap your victims even faster and drag them deep into your allies. I could see substitutions for either or . Try the build with and without it and see what you like best.
Lastly for runes you can play around with them to counter the enemy team. I generally keep the attack speed because it helps us stack conqueror faster. I then choose either AD, Armor or MR for the last two.
FACTOR 1: Your Team Comp
- This is to choose between Turbo Chemtank OR the other three items. If you are the initiator, (have no teammates that will hard engage such as , , , etc) then may be the best option. If my team has engaging potential and my role on the team is more of a bruiser, then I will most likely choose between the other three items (See below for more).
FACTOR 2: Enemy Team Comp
- Now that you are choosing between , and , you should focus on how tanky the enemy team is.
-If they have 3+ tanks then I will take Divine Sunderer 100%.
-If they are a squishy team then I usually take Tri force.
-If I am feeling spicy and they have a lot of melee champs, I will take goredrinker.
For more info about the builds with tri or goredrinker see notes above in build tab.
If I'm on blue team, my standard clear is: start Red -> Chickens -> Wolves -> Blue -> Gromp -> Scuttle or gank top/mid/fight jungler for scuttle.
If I'm on red team, my standard clear is: start Blue -> Gromp -> Wolves -> Chickens -> Red -> Scuttle or gank top/mid/fight jungler for scuttle.
If you are clearing correctly, you should have 100% hp with one smite charge when you arrive at scuttle which should be around 3 minutes. That gives you 15/25 seconds to get the spire, drop a ward and decide either to gank or focus on crab.
My favorite way to impose myself early game is to counter jungle, and look to double scuttle them. This is demoralizing as a jungler, at least I HATE when I get double scuttled. Look for ganks between your camps, but don't go out of your way. Focus on getting level 6 .
This time look for ganks or drakes. I rarely do rift unless there is nothing else to do on the map because it kills tempo. The difference between successful junglers and those trapped in ELO Hell is knowing which lanes to gank. Use a quick mental checklist:
1. Who has the least escapability? or
2. What teammates have hard cc to help you? or
3. Do they have flash up?
4. What can I possibly lose or gain by going for this gank?
**Think of the worst case scenario because it will probably happen. I don't want to gank top when my bot is pushed up to the enemy's tower with no vision and drake is up. Even if I get a succesful gank off top, we could lose a lot more botside. Don't worry about having to run down there, you are FAST.
When it comes to teamfighting at this point in the game, you most likely have to be the initiator. Look to + their most vulnerable target. It does not have to be the adc. If you are trying to secure drake, sting the enemy jungler, if the enemy supp is out of position grab him/her.
Just get a pick.
**I CANNOT stress this enough, do NOT underestimate your damage/survivability especially if you are fighting in a spire zone. You can 1v3 at this point.**
You are the Pick king. Never FF.
Skarner is a very fun champion because you get to run around the map at blazing speeds, creating havoc wherever you decide to go. He is a safe pick because he does not have almost any awful matchups, and his kit helps cover up a lot of mistakes (we all make mistakes). His ulti is a game CHANGING ability which nullifies the opposing team's mvp or at least makes them buy qss. There is a lot of room to grow with skarner, but the one thing that will make your Skarner gameplay better is learning macro. The only way to learn macro is to practice and of course to watch my youtube videos;). Just kidding, but for real, drop by and say hey from time to time. Thanks for reading my guide and good luck on the rift, summoner.
