Good aatrox will know how to punish you in the laning phase.
Overall at most stages he will probably be healing too much for Swain to kill him fast enough.
Azir
Late game monster.
Has higher single target damage than Swain and outranges you. Swain does not like to be outranged.
Brand
Under all circumstance this champion will always do damage. Swain does not like to be outranged.
Darius
Daddy Darius destroys Swain if Darius is able to close the gap. Laning phase should be quite stagnant, where you as a range shoudl not overstep your bounderies and play out the lane carefully.
Do not pull Daddy Darius if you are not at max Range.
Elise
Does %HP damage. She will hurt.
Evelynn
This champ is impossible to not do damage with. She will chunk a lot of your HP. Be careful when nearing 30% HP as her Ult will undoubtedly kill you.
Fiddlesticks
Tread cautiously around the king of ambush.
Garen
This dude will run into your stuns and shrug them off almost instantly. His Silence will make you play wait and dodge game until it will allow you to play League of Legends again. During this time he will also whittle you down with Judgement (E) and at that point if you are at ~30% you are dead.
Gnar
Bully you in lane.
Cassiopeia
Late game monster.
Has higher single target damage than Swain and not the easiest champion to catch. Swain does not like evasive champions.
Cho'Gath
If Cho'gath lands his hardskill shot (W) it will allow him to do his famous combo into R. Careful of the one-shots.
Irelia
[tl;dr]STRONG DUELIST.
SWAIN DOES NOT LIKE EVASIVE DAMAGE DEALERS.
Will punish you in lane, if you get too close. Do not waste your E as this is your main defense. Irelia will be more focused on dodging than killing you if you have it up. Your W can also be used as a slow. Place it where you are going to be in the next 1-2 seconds (preferable near your turret, escaping) either she takes the slow or walks back.
Agaisnt a good Irelia use your CC abilites defensively as zoning tools, than catch and poke.
Not just Swain but all matchups against Irelia, play around her passive stacks and avoid fighting her at her strongest.
Jax
Weak early opponent. Use your E at a safe distance so he can only avoid it by Q:ing something other than you yourself.
Will outscale you whenever you like it or not. Swain still has a range and CC advantage.
Mobile in terms of a target leap, other than that not the hardest to catch.
If escaping Jax, simple throw a Q in target direction and he cannot dodge it with his Q and resume his chase. Combine this with W placement in the location Swain will be in.
Jayce
Range bully. Stand behind minions to hide from his enhanced Q. Try to back off when your minion wave starts to thin out.
You outscale him, so take the lane in your pace.
Kalista
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Karthus
High magic damage DPS, which often is rare in League of Legends, when its present.
Kassadin
Bully this *** as much as possible before he becoms uncontrolable for Swain to deal with.
Swain has nothing against this guy in the later parts of the game.
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Katarina
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Kayle
Outscales Swain.
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Kayn
Red Kayn will heal 2-5 times his max HP before his death. If you are still alive - this will cost you quite some Mana.
Kled
He will jump you before level 6, and you have no defense. Bait out his W, when he last hits his minions and only walk up to farm caster minions when his Q is on cooldown.
Level 6 and it should be more fair, but still favourable to kled.
Positive news is that you hard outscale him, you're healing outdoes his burst on W.
Kog'Maw
Kog'Maw likes to deal damage whoever you are playing. Probably will be your teams main focus in teamfights.
Leona
Leona has strong and easy landable skillshots. Primarily her R. This is where you should opt to go Flash&Cleanse or otherwise you will get caught and maybe not even able to pop your R.
Lillia
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Lucian
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Lux
Swain does not like to be outranged.
Malphite
Malphite prefers to build armor over magic resist giving Swain more room to kill this guy.
Very hittable R. When crucial. Be ready to use a flash before he lands his Ult on you.
Nocturne
Hard engage and fear combo.
Although Fear is easily counterable with either cleanse or Hourglass.
Olaf
Avoid his Q at all cost, since a good Olaf will punish or even kill you if you are too far up in lane.
Core mechanics of Swain is that he can kite melee champions, but Olaf during Ragnarok (R) will be immune to your CC.
Pantheon
One of the biggest lane bullies.
You can face him in all three lanes.
You outscale this champ more than any other.
Rammus
Even though this guy stacks all the armor in the shop. He will still be able to catch you when you least expect, with his insane movement speed and taunt.
As the main carry - you need cleanse.
Renekton
Careful with the Crocodile before you have Seeker's Armguard as two combos will be enough to kill you.
Master Yi
High burst and DPS. Immune to slows during Highlander (R) but susceptible to other types. Try to land your E and gain som distance.
Swain should be able to tank 4-8 AA from Master Yi at different stages of the mid to late game.
Swain on the other hand should be able to 2 shot Master Yi (2 Qs + 1 W + 1 E).
Mordekaiser
Big stat champion. Would be fine it it were not for his ultimate Realm of Death (R). During this time, you will prolly be at disadvantage. If Swain is able to sustain through Realm of Death (R) then perhaps it could turn into Swain's favour.
Nasus
Bully this guy as much as possible before he gains too much power than is supposed to be healthy.
Can be harder to bully as Swain struggles with Mana problems when harassing vs Nasus who has inbuilt life steal.
Nasus at his strongest phase, will simply put a Slow on you and be able to close the distance with ease.
Run Phase Rush to escape this doom, or buy Everfrost.
Ryze
Does more damage than he needs to. Gains shields as he throws his barrage. Avoid 1v1:s later on.
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Syndra
Swain does not like to be outranged.
Trundle
Trundle is a strong duelist since patch 10.23 and will certainly demolish you in a sidelane.
Tryndamere
Enter lane first and deny him to fill his Rage bar. Make him use his Rage bar as a heal than damage onto you.
He is not as scary as he looks compared to other melee bruisers.
Udyr
Will run at you and then dont run at you. The continue to run at you. You will waste your CC on this fast fella while he will land his stun on you.
Swain does not like to evasive damage dealers.
Vel'Koz
Swain does not like to be outranged.
Vi
Vi's Assault and Battery (R) is the staple shutdown spells in the game. You are aiming to be the carry, this will make you the target for this ability.
Try and make someone else in your team the frontliner.
Viktor
This guy hurts like none other in patch 10.23. A good viktor will be the focus in every teamfight.
Vladimir
Hey its your blood brother.
There are no gimmics to this matchup. Buy Grevious Wounds and the one with the most gold will win.
He has more healing than you, but you have quicker damage therefore higher DPS (at melee range).
Wukong
Dude has instant invisibility. Try and use your E at the same time he uses Warrior Trickster (W), will allow your explosion to trigger on his clone and most likely root the real wukong too.
Xerath
Swain does not like to be outranged.
Yasuo
HIs Wind wall (W) will not block your Q, W or R. Spam your Q until he decides to waste his W. Avoid his tornados and be careful around minion waves.
Yone
Play around the cooldown of his E. As this is his easiest engage, the rest can be played around.
Swain does not like to mobile damage dealers.
Swain is a medium to hard scaler. Against some matchups Swain is late game nightmare and against some he will be one among the rest, but One thing that remains consistant is that Swain will ALWAYS be this nightmare monster in the mid game.
No need for an item advantage or anyhting. All that is required is a slight XP lead. The bigger lead, the more of a monster you become.
What is preventing Swain from Dominating in the Mid game?
Swain has difficulties pressuring the enemy team with a lead, this is due to him having difficulties initiating fights.
Swain has no inbuilt movement speed. Only way for Swain to initiate a fight, is to snatch someone outside of his vicinity with his Vision of Empire (W), then get into a range of a Nevermove (E). This is the standard catch for a Swain.
Any smart player will not engage on top of a Swain when they can simply try their best to whittle him down from a far distance.
Know how to kill a Swain
It is just a bird
When you know how to kill a Swain yourself. You will know how to avoid death.
With this knowledge, Swain in particular is quite hard to die with.
How to kill!
Bait out his R.
Overwhelm.
When to wait
Poke/short trades
What makes Swain a Good Snowballer
This guide was built around the Night Harvester Mythic Item.
After extensive testing I found out that Luden's Tempest is much more FORGIVING than Night Harvester while keeping most of the Snowballing elements.
One obvious note being the 600 Mana difference, but also being beneficial in 1v1:s as the cooldown is x4 shorter.
Swain running Luden's Tempest will make Swain act like a typical Mage, while keeping his battle mage prowess. One important factor is that Swain does not need help in power during the early mid game. Swain's base stats are high enough to 1v2 quite handidly without the edge in AP values.

Night Harvester:
With a focus on Snowballing by purchasing Night Harvester this is predominately a MID/ADC guide. Night Harvester is afterall a very strong early-mid item and works best against squishies. This Item weakens as longer into the game you go, therefore switching mythics when you get into the late game is preferable - you should have expendable gold by then.
Luden's Tempest:
I am not here to say that Luden's Tempest is irrelevant in terms of damage compared to Riftmaker and Liandry's Anguish past mid game. It still serves it uses, being a good squishy killer. Luden's Tempest is strong against everybody
