Introduction

Hello all readers, I'm Shokkulate (used to be CriticalShokku) a LAN Rengar main. I prefer the jungle rather than any side lane or mid lane, and I've grown to play in there most of my games. I used to be a Wukong main back in the day, but once I tried Rengar out, I couldn't stop. I am trying to bring to you readers the little knowledge and tips I know of my favorite champion in this game, and I hope they help you as much as they helped me become the Rengar main I am now!

Summary

Rengar. When you think of Rengar you think of his oneshot and assassination potential, and maybe some splitpushing thrown in there. This champion once mastered and used at his full potential can change the genre of the game from MOBA to an Horror game. I will show you how to play Rengar my style so you can make Horror games out of your ranked games.

Rengar is a champion definitely worth learning, and in the right hands, can close out games really early and give no counterplay to the squishy champion that may be in the enemy team.

Rune Choice

keystone
  • Electrocute: With Electrocute, Rengar is much more capable of setting up an early game advantage with the early burst this keystone can give. It will help a lot in early trades or counterjungling. This rune does not fall off in late game either, so it will also serve the bursting purpose if the game lasts that long. All in all, a keystone that will remain relevant.

sudden impact
  • Sudden Impact: This will give you extra magic pen and lethality on each leap you get from Unseen Predator which will help you get more damage off in conjunction with your other lethality items. The magic penetration is not lost either, since when you want to 100-0 a single target you will use Battle Roar to get that extra ferocity stack.

eyeball collection
  • Eyeball Collection: Eyeball Collection is really good because it gives you even more extra AD along with your bonetooth necklace and even if it may not look like it's much, the AD is nothing to laugh at. Can be replaced with Zombie Ward if you really prefer the utility it gives.

relentless hunter
  • Relentless Hunter: This is mostly taken because the other runes in this part of Domination are underwhelming. But that's not a reason to ignore this rune, it gives a lot of out of combat movespeed which will help you with moving around the map and catching out targets with your ultimate, or even escape sometimes. A really useful rune that will save your life more than once.

The rune page shown is the best at the moment, as it will help you with Attack Speed in early-midgame which is Rengar's best phase. Other choices are taking Dark Harvest for the late game potential and a playstyle less focused on early game. Zombie Ward for that added vision that is always good for a jungler.

Secondary trees may include Precision with Triumph and Coup de Grace instead of the one you see up there, Sorcery with The Ultimate Hat and Celerity for making more out of Thrill of the Hunt for catching that ADC while he's alone or in the side lanes or Celerity with Waterwalking for that early game river dueling potential and faster movement to arrive faster to the lanes, Inspiration with Future's Market for getting an early tiamat and Perfect Timing for early dive potential or Magical Footwear for being able to get free boots and thus focus on your Duskblade rush.

The Good, and the Bad.

Pros

+ Best single target burst and assassination potential in the game
+ Variety of builds be it toplane or the jungle.
+ Utility in the form of true vision.
+ Awesome early-mid game pressure.
+ Attack speed steroid.
+ Unburstable if Battle Roar is used correctly.

Rengar is a champion designed for being able to deal tons of damage to a single target in the lowest time possible if done correctly, and can even leave a enemy champion entirely useless for most of the game due to his bursty nature.
If used correctly this champion not only can turn games, but also make them one-sided from the very beginning.
Cons

- Doesn't scale as well as other junglers.
- Easy to play, hard to master.
- No real way of getting out once he jumps in.
- Very vulnerable to Crowd Control.
- Good if ahead, very useless if behind.
- If he fails to assassinate his objective, he will most likely die.

Rengar of course does have his fair set of weaknesses which are very apparent if the situation comes. He has no real escape once he jumps in to attempt to delete a target, and also only really gets that overkill and burst capabilities if he isn't behind. Luckily, Rengar's good things by far exceed the bad ones, and once learned you can even remove most of these weaknesses from every game! A champion truly worth learning.

PASSIVE
ABILITY
Unseen Predator (Passive): This is actually a lot of passives in one. First off, let's talk about the Bonetooth Necklace part of it. Upon getting a unique champion kill your Attack Damage will increase a bit, and it can stack up to 25% extra AD. This means that you should seek to kill all the champions once until it gets hard to kill them (example: a tank.) Let's talk about the leap passive now. This is what makes Rengar, well, Rengar. This once used correctly will help you get your full combo off, since the leap will give you one free ferocity. Bush kiting correctly can mean the difference between life and death, and this is something you should practice. Now with the ferocity, Rengar's resource bar. It can stack up to 4, and gets a stack every time Rengar hits an ability. Once at 4 stacks, Rengar's next ability will gain bonus effects. This is very useful, since it allows you to really get the boom of an ability you may need in a certain situation, for example, rooting a squishy that's running away with an empowered Bola Strike.

Q
Savagery (Q): Savagery must be the smoothest autoattack reset in the whole game. It is a small attack speed buff for 2 attacks with the first dealing bonus damage. Once empowered, it will do notably more damage and give you an attack speed buff based on level. This helps us splitpush or duel enemy champions that we normally wouldn't be able to beat without the attack speed. Using this as an autoattack correctly will effectively increase your burst and DPS, so practice that!

W
Battle Roar (W): The Battle Roar is where you can see if a Rengar truly knows what he's doing. This ability by itself can separate the good Rengars from the amazing Rengars. This ability has too much uses, it work as a Cleanse, it works as a heal, it also works as an AoE source of damage if the situation demands so, it is a part of your full combo too.

E
Bola Strike (E): Rengar's simplest ability, but definitely not his worst one. This brings so much utility when you're far ahead that allows you to get assassinations off that you normally wouldn't have done without it's slow, or in the empowered case, the root. This is also what helps you stay a bit relevant when you're behind, since it is a form of Crowd Control that's also ranged.

R
Thrill of the Hunt (R):
We have finally reached Thrill of the Hunt. This ability is the reason Rengar is so feared in the games he's fed. The way he turns his matches into Horror games is this ability. Rengar stealths himself and gains true vision of the nearest enemy champion, and every time the closest champion changes he will also gain true vision of the new one while keeping it on the last one. Rengar has the ability to perform a passive leap from the stealth in this ultimate, and if it's done on the closest target, it will get bonus damage and flat armor reduction. This ability connects your oneshot combo to the squishy enemy you want to delete using the leap, so if you there's no bush and you don't use this jump well you might be as good as dead.
