Hi there! My name is Unsung, and I’m a high elo top lane player. I’ve been Masters+ since season 5 playing top lane, and challenger season 9.

My favorite toplane champs are heavy skirmishers that scale decently well, like Aatrox, Riven, Yasuo, Darius, Camille, and the like.

I was extremely pleased with Sett’s kit when he was revealed, so I decided to invest a lot of time into him using the PBE. All of my expectations were met and then some. Sett has a deceptive amount of depth behind his juggernaut title, and plenty of room for skill expression. This is gonna be an early guide to help everyone out that is also interested in the champion! Everything here is subject to change in the near future as my peers (and myself) discover new strategies and builds for Sett, so please keep that in mind when you read through!

I personally think this is the best rune for Sett, it synergizes really well with his AD ratios and extended fighting pattern. Sett usually gets a few q rotations off, and his passive makes up for the lack of damage after blowing his cooldowns. After having a lot of time with him, this is 100% the best rune for this champion.
Press The Attack
Press is pretty decent when you can’t stay in on a target for too long, and have to kill them really quickly using Titantic Hydra etc.
Triumph
Triumph gives a lot more value to higher HP champs and allows you to stay alive in extended fights. 12% of missing hp when you have 3k health is a pretty great heal when you’re low.
Legend: Alacrity
Alacrity synergizes with his right punch since Sett's right punch gains 50 bonus range, attacks at 8 times the left punch's attack speed, and deals 5 − 90 (based on level) (+ 15% AD) bonus physical damage. This is personally my favorite rune in the “Legend” tree for Sett
Legend: Bloodline
Bloodline is also a pretty decent rune for Sett since you deal so much damage with your autos. Take this if you think you can use the sustain over the fighting pressure.
Legend: Tenacity
Tenacity is INCREDIBLY important on a full melee character. It doesn’t matter if you deal monstrous amounts of damage to people if you cannot touch them. Take this against Morg, Braum, Maokai, and the like.
Coup De Grace
You’re pretty much always going to want to take Coup De Grace, since Sett’s Passive gives him insane HP regen at lower hp, and cut down is useless since his hp/level is really high and you itemize HP.
Primary Domination
Electrocute
Strong for the same reasons Press is, lets you blow people up in short trades and assassinate important targets if you build lethality.
Predator
Really strong movespeed bonus lets you get in and removes some of your full melee weaknesses. Take this if you do not want to play for lane, but know that it is probably one of the worst runes for Sett overall.
HAIL OF BLADES
This makes your early trades REALLY strong and really fast, but press and conq do it better for the most part. I personally do not like this rune too much on him, and it’s outperformed by almost everything else.
Primary Resolve
Aftershock
Run aftershock if you’re wanting to play a more supportive and engage/counter-engage role for your team. Aftershock gives you some extra time to line up big Haymakers and clutch stuns with Facebreaker. This rune also really helps if you’re having trouble with high damage carry tops like Jax, Riven, Jayce and the like
Grasp of the Undying
Actually not a bad rune if you’re against a Tank that you can’t kill in an extended fight. You can farm grasp procs against your opponent so you come out of lane incredibly tanky.
Secondary Tree
This is up to you and based off of your matchup. The most consistent secondary tree is going to be green, with bone plating and demolish. If you buy a ghostblade then Ingenious Hunter is pretty strong on him with Taste of Blood for extra lane sustain. Relentless Hunter is good for getting onto people on roams and having more map mobility. The blue tree is pretty nice as well, take it if you run Ghost for Nimbus Cloak and Transcendence to help you get a little more cdr.
Flash
You have to take this summoner in order to function.
Ghost
Strong on Sett for the same reasons it is strong on Darius. Immobile champs need a way in.
Teleport
This is personally what I'll be running in 90% of my games, tp is just way too strong if you snowball OR fall behind. It’s lets you splitpush, create 1v1s, and general map pressure.

Pit Grit
PASSIVE: PIT GRIT
INNATE - HEAVY HANDS: Sett's basic attacks alternate between a left punch then a right punch. Sett begins attacking with a left punch, and will reset back to it after 2 seconds of not performing a right punch.

Sett's right punch gains 50 bonus range, attacks at 8 times the left punch's attack speed, and deals 5 − 90 (based on level) (+15% AD) bonus physical damage.

INNATE - HEART OF THE HALF-BEAST: Sett gains Health regeneration icon 0.25 / 0.5 / 1 / 2 (based on level) health regeneration per second for every 5% of his missing health.
Knuckle Down
Q: KNUCKLE DOWN
ACTIVE: For the first 1.5 seconds, Sett gains 30% bonus movement speed while moving towards enemy champions.

Sett's next two basic attacks within 5 seconds each deal bonus physical damage. Consuming an attack will refresh the timer.

Knuckle Down resets Sett's basic attack timer.
Haymaker
W: HAYMAKER
PASSIVE: Sett stores 100% of post-mitigation damage taken as Grit on his secondary resource bar, up to 50% of his maximum health. Each instance of stored Grit decays by 30% every second after 4 seconds.

ACTIVE: Sett blasts an area in the target direction, dealing physical damage to enemies hit. Enemies hit through the center take true damage instead.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT: Sett also gains a rapidly decaying shield for 3 seconds equal to the Grit expended.
Facebreaker
E: FACEBREAKER
ACTIVE: Sett pulls in enemies at his front and back, dealing physical damage and slowing them by 50% for 0.5 seconds.

If Facebreaker affects at least one enemy on each side, all enemies are stunned for 1 second upon landing.
The Show Stopper
R: THE SHOW STOPPER
ACTIVE: Sett suppresses the target enemy champion and then dashes unstoppably at a fixed distance toward it, carrying it along for 1.5 seconds before slamming the target into the ground.

Enemies within the impact area take physical damage, reduced by up to 40% at the edge, and are slowed by 99% for 1.5 seconds.

The dash will prematurely end upon reaching a wall that cannot be dashed through.
Starting Items
Your starting items will vary depending on your playstyle and matchup. This is something pretty unique to top, so you will need to use the best of YOUR judgement on these items, but I will lay out some examples for you.
Doran's Blade
If you’re against a matchup that can’t HEAVILY POKE YOU, or you want to force an all in early. (E.g, Riven, Darius, Yasuo, Mordekaiser)If you get a big lead pick up two more Doran's blades into a phage. This lets you really trade hard and win early.
Doran's Shield
Starting item against DELAYED harass, or an item that you pick up on your first back against HEAVY harass. E.g, (Vayne, Kennen, Kayle, Vlad, Teemo)
Long Sword + 3 Pots
If you feel like you’re going to need the extra CDR early, or if you’re going to hard win your lane. This is a high risk high reward build path, as you really do make use of all Doran’s items.
Personally, I feel like the most well rounded build for Sett is similar to an Irelia build.

Trinity force as your first item, get an early warhammer and a Kindlegem. My reasoning behind this style of itemization is a mix of durability and damage the early CDR really helps you win your lane and early teamfights with W max. TriForce as a first item gives you access to a lot of attack speed early on, which helps the speed of your right punch. This allows you to pace your opponents and space yourself in a way that lets you stay right alongside them using your q and the phage passive. Spellblade also kind of removes some of the more rear loaded damage he has, and helps his damage profile be a little more consistent as LP+Spellblade = Right punch damage. The additional cdr also helps with Sett’s longer cds on his non-q abilities, so you can get off a few more rotations.

Your second COMPLETED item is gooing to be Death's Dance, since it gives you a lot of great stats for early midgame, and you have enough tank stats with W being on a 5~ second cd. Are you going to get blown up in fights? Then buy a Sterak's as your third completed item. Are you going to run around the map and try and secure an early victory? Ghostblade. After purchasing your 3rd full item (excluding boots), I think that GA is a really nice buy. At this point you’re either massively snowballed and need to deny your shutdown, or you’re behind and need to disrupt as much as you can before going down. Part of the nature of toplane is uncertainty, so you need to be able to adapt game to game to make the most out of the role as a whole.

I no longer think that Sett needs a tiamat item in order to do well, the money is spent better on CDR if you're maxing your Haymaker.
A completed build against a standard team will look like:
Trinity Force
This is my personal favorite item for Sett, It gives movespeed which you desperately need, attack speed which makes your right punch come out faster, and a sheen proc for his spammable Q in fights and spaced ability usage.
Titanic Hydra
Titanic Hydra in its current iteration DOES NOT INCREASE THE SPEED OF YOUR RIGHT PUNCH. If you use titanic hydra you MUST use it on the left punch. For example, LEFT PUNCH, RIGHT PUNCH (Titanic) LEFT PUNCH, RIGHT PUNCH. The second left punch is on a different auto attack timer, so your 2nd right punch comes out with the bonus attack speed. If you use Titanic on the RIGHT PUNCH, it removes the bonus attack speed scaling from it. Here is an example:

Sterak's Gage
This item allows you to gain more grit, or use your w in better positions so you get the maximum return from it. Sett’s w shouldn’t be thought of as a defensive tool alone, but also a key offensive skill, so in order to reliably get off both portions of the attack Sterak’s is one of your best options.
Guardian Angel
This item is really strong on melee bruisers if you have a lead, or you need to stand back up in a fight. There’s a lot of armor on this item as well as a decent chunk of ad, which are all stats that synergize well with each other. I’d pick this up 3rd or 4th depending on the game.


Armor/MR Boots
Sometimes you have to choose between Tenacity and Survivability in a game. If the enemy Veigar is really weak on a full ad team, but keeps you locked out with the stuns, then you have to pick up MR boots for the bonus % tenacity in order to deal your damage. This works the same way for primarily AP comps with a strong adc. Sometimes you have to buy the Ninja Tabi in order to negate the ADC’s damage so you can get off a full spell rotation without dying, even if they have a bunch of AP champ
Blade of the Ruined King
This is a pretty decent item for Sett if you need a way to chase down champs with less gap closers and higher hp pools, such as Volibear, Maokai, Illaoi etc. The MS steal works really well with your q’s active move speed bonus.
Death's Dance
This is a pretty solid item that gives a bunch of stats that Sett really benefits from; AD, true damage taken to be used as Grit later on, lifesteal, and CDR. Pick this up if you’re able to survive fights for long enough without resists and snowball a lead.


Mercurial Scimitar/QSS
This is a really good item for getting in or eating that one undodgeable cc that keeps locking you out. Good against Lissandra, Morgana, Leona and the like.
Ravenous Hydra
Just a worse titanic, but more ad. Gives lifesteal if you don’t need the LP/RP auto reset.
Frozen Mallet
This seems like a really strong item for Sett, but in my opinion if you’re able to get close enough to auto someone, you’ve already won the fight. Buy this if you really need the HP, and are having trouble sticking.
Youmuu's Ghostblade
I personally feel like this will be an amazing 2nd item for Sett if you have a sizeable lead. You can hold your Q for a little bit longer and make the most out of your base kit when you have a smaller ghost on CD.
The Black Cleaver
This item is really good for most ad bruisers, but I do not think this is better than Tforce for Sett in the same way that it’s not as good on Darius or Illaoi. First and foremost the amount of bonus attack speed that you get from Trinity cannot be replaced in your build unless you itemize a BOTRK. Sett’s right punch really benefits from AS, so you lose out on that. Then you lose the Sheen proc, which makes your LP hurt as much as your RP and makes you a little bit less front loaded damage wise. Sett also gets off multiple spell rotations in most fights, so spellblade is a really good to use if you can remember it.Sett does % max hp damage already, which makes building cleaver WEAKER against SQUISHY targets. You already have no trouble killing tanks alone due to their high hp pools and % hp damage, but you will run into issues killing squishies faster if you run a cleaver.
Lethality Sett
Sanguine Blade is gonna be your first item so you can make the most out of the passive, followed by Youmuu's Ghostblade and then Duskblade of Draktharr/ Edge of Night.

This build makes your ulti ALMOST one shot squishy targets if you slam someone on top of them. Remember that your ulti IS YOUR GAPCLOSER, and you generally do not want to use it to pick up a carry unless you NEED the damage or displacement.


Laning Phase
Sett is a champion that doesn’t have any gapcloser or reliable way to engage. You have to use good wave management and space control to get the most out of him. During the early and later lane phase, you’re going to want to stand between your opponent and their creeps so you can get a stun off and force a hard trade.

Level 1 you are pretty strong if you catch someone out, so you can take an all in in the river or tribush if you know where the toplaner is going to path.

Most of the time you’re going to be the person initiating the fight using your E or Q movespeed bonus, so make sure that your waves are in good spots for this. If someone doesn’t respect you all in them over and over until they’re forced to play back and allow you to take your lead.

Save your W and GRIT for the end of a fight instead of using it before to make use out of the shield and scaling damage portions of it. If someone is all inning you, use the grit shield to block the largest portion of their damage just before they use it or AFTER you both walk away from the fight. Sometimes you’re going to want to take a tower shot or two in order to finish a kill with your W, so don’t be afraid of sacrificing hp for damage.

I will add an example of laning phase as a video guide in the short future, so please keep your eyes out for that and check back frequently.

Out of Lane
When you make it out of lane as Sett, your primary way of initiation is through the enemy team. If the enemy team has a Leona who e’s in on you or someone else YOU SEND THEM BACK with your ulti and start your fight then with a well placed e. If the enemy team does not want to force a fight onto yours, the next best thing is to flash into them from behind and drop someone into the center of your team after finding a good flank. You can also just run up and drop someone in the front onto the backline, but this is risky and a decent way to throw a lead. Only do this if you know you’re going to win the fight and try to stay away from baiting your team into a bad fight. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HOLD ONTO YOUR W UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY TAKE DAMAGE, you do not want to use your strongest skill before you have grit saved up and miss out on huge damage and survivability.

If you aren’t able to force fights out of lane, don’t be afraid of split pushing! Sett has an incredibly fast tower kill time with demolish and LP/RP rotations, so manage your waves and take map control!
At the end of everything I really hope that you guys enjoy Sett as much as I do! I personally love playing him in the toplane even though he does work in the jungle, but please explore that as well! If you do not have a good game with him the first game or three you try him, please try him again, he really isn’t as easy as he looks from the outside.
