I generally buy a Sunfire Aegis, gives hp, armor and does some damage. Syncs nicely with Abyssal Mask, too :)

Sunfire Cape on Galio? :/
I did consider this item, but do you ever get in range to use it efficiently? You are melee, you seldom get close to anyone... but I will test it.

I do feel like Abyssal Mask is a core item on him, though. It's just too good to pass up.

Also, regarding the Rabadon's Deathcap discussion, it does increase the heal and your damage, but it doesn't contribute to Galio's defensive stats, so unless you are ahead I don't feel like it is worth it (or if you're playing AP Galio, then it's absolutely core).

Well, I'm fairly certain Sunfire Aegis also gives you a bit more pushing power that doesn't require you to burn mana.

healing is a defensive stat...

If you heal for 1k health you basically have 1k more health.

In my build, it grants roughly 300 AP, so at max 600 bonus health, and that scales with how often I can use Bulwark. 45% is for that really nice.

Maybe I should add I get him on ARAM sometimes, if you're up against a bunch of melee champs it works (for me at least). Also, when your spells are on CD, you wanna do some AA's, if you hit your Q and E you can get very close.

That makes the assumption that you're never CC'd, someone else doesn't need it more than you, (because it gives resists), you're not ignited/grievous wounded, not actually taking damage if it's on you, etc.

Just because you're healing 1K health... over the duration of the spell, doesn't mean that you straight up have 1K health more to use. If you get hit with 1K worth of damage in a burst, Bulwark is only going to heal for a little bit. But if you get hit with something like Malefic Visions, then it's going to put in work.

Adding to the "why buy sunfire" discussion. Sunfire isn't super amazing, but it's pretty good. The bonus damage is lackluster, but it's nice for pushing waves without using mana, as Amanda said. It's only really good if you want health and armor though, and a lot of other items give that as well, and in slightly better amounts since they don't have a damaging passive to bump up their cost.
