Ruby Sightstone always, and ward the other side's jungle exit and dragon (on blue side this can be done with a single ward)

Race to level 2 by pushing the waves up to that point, you should help but be careful not to mess up the partners last hits. Beating your opponents to level 2 is a huge advantage.

Take the lead in lane: your job is to capitalize on the other guys' mistakes, the ADC should follow up on your engages, not the other way around. on that not your ADC should be close enough to follow up, it does you no good to engage when your ADC is a half screen away.

Help push the lane when appropriate: if one or both of your opponents are MIA/Dead you should getting minions to the tower ASAP to force lost gold.

^^ This.

Also, since supports get more gold now, try to get a Mikael's Blessing if the other team has hard CC (such as a Leona). Get a Sweeping Lens once you finish your Sightstone.
I main...the entire top lane.
I miss: Tank Rengar top, AD Nidalee, Mash Keyboard Ryze...the OPs

Also stay away from Spellthief's Edge. Ancient Coin is much better on non-tank supports by a long shot.

Spellthief's Edge is only good on Sona and Lulu imo.

As for picks, you gotta go for tanky CC ( Leona, Thresh, Alistar) or full damage ( Annie, Lulu, Karma). Most traditional supports are now midlaners :P

Ofc Sightstone is mandatory on each.
For tanky CC champs, buy Locket of the Iron Solari and Randuin's Omen, items like that.
For full damage champs, well, buy damage. Depends per champ.

Playstyle... keep wards up in crucial places, and get experience by playing a lot, to know match-ups. It'll help you learning whether or not you can go for a fight.
Later on, keep warding/clearing wards, and try to protect your carry! I see so many people leaving the carry on their own to die to some Dr. Mundo...

You can't really start it (or you will get rekt in an all-in), and buying it first back is really bad because you won't get to harass enough afterward to make it worth getting over Talisman of Ascension.

It's really annoying that you're pretty much forced to buy the talisman if no one else on your team is getting it, because if your team doesn't have the active and the enemy does, engaging and disengaging become way harder.

Sightstone is no longer mandatory with the new gold flow; you'll have more than enough money for wards each back.

The other side's jungle exit/dragon isn't a must-Ward, especally not in solo queue. Always Ward both River bush and Tri, regardless of if you're purple or blue. If you can, dedicate pinks to Tri.

Eh people up to gold III seem to be stupid enough to get poked down so you can start spellthief if you feel confident :P

I always get the opposite effect: If I start spellthief people are afraid of trading but if I start shield people are like OOOO BETTER ENGAGE WHILE I STARTED WITH COIN, I'LL DEFFO WIN THAT TRADE

I assume things aren't much better at silver V so go ahead and buy what you feel like buying =D
Also, only get sightstone on champs that benefit from the tankyness
I completely forgo it on zyra, annie and karma.

Every i saw many mistake's in soloQ that their adc or supp do, since i play ranked team games, i saw so many bad postion by their support. I'm really quite good to see other people mistakes xD
Yeah i always try to rush ruby Sightstone since i play 80% with Tank supports.
I need to focus in the last thing you said, never thought about the gols they will lose if they are mia/dead. Thank you for the tip :)

I always get Sweeping Lens after finish Sightstone (god bless xpecial stream), but i never use Mikael's Blessing but now that i think it's seems a good choice, i must try this next time against a Leona or a hard CC team.

Yeah.. Something i engage when i shouldn't. It's one of my problems, there are times that i don't know if i should or not fight.

That's my job boy, protect my carry xD

I always start with doran's shield, it's make me and my carry to win 90% of the trades.
You sir make a really good point when you talk about to get forced to buy talisman because of the engages and desingages.

Yeah i still forget to buy some pink to ward tri-bush, need to play some games to remember myself to ward tri-bush, drake and baron with a pink.

It's rare but some supports start with doran's shield. I just use Spellthief's Edge on Lulu, i use Ancient Coin always on any other support but i start with Doran's Shield.
