[10.12] Shyvana Jungle Guide - KingStix - Challenger

About Me

A Challenger Jungler (NA) and Youtuber

Hello, I'm KingStix. I'm a challenger jungle main on NA and I play a variety of jungle champions in challenger. Shyvana is an easy to play champion that offers a lot of value throughout the entire game if played correctly. If you are looking to one trick a champion, Shyvana could be a great choice because she can be played both AP and AD. Currently, Shyvana is much better as an AP jungler, but if your team is full AP and you don't have a strong AD jungler on your roster- you might choose to go AD instead. This isn't a full guide for AD Shyvana jungle (yet, my guides are constantly being updated), but you can see the item choices you can build at the top and just know that AD Shyvana relies on playing in close/ melee range so landing your ultimate on the enemies is going to be more important VS using E from a distance for heavy poke.

I'm passionate about improving at the game and helping other people improve as well. So, I make guides and other educational content for League of Legends on my YouTube channel .

Clear Route
On Shyvana, you should do a full clear route starting with your bot lane. Depending on your side of the map, that should be either:
Red > Smite golems > raptors > wolves > blue > Smite gromp OR
Blue > Smite gromp > wolves > raptors > red > Smite golems

How to Clear Monster Camps
Start with your E Flame Breath level 1 unless you are need to solo start on wolves or raptors since your teammates are not leashing- in this case you should start W Burnout level 1. Make sure as you're clearing that the fire circle around you (your W) is on the monster camps and that your E hits as many targets as possible in your AOE camps (raptors, golems, wolves). Also note that your Q Twin Bite is an auto attack reset so make sure you auto first before using your Q to get its full value. You should be using all 3 of these abilities on the camps to clear them as quickly as possible.

Ganking
Keep an eye on the lanes to see if there is a free gank during your 1st clear. This would be the enemy laner pushing up far with half health or less. Other than that, you aren't likely to get a kill/assist this early on. So, back after your 1st clear and go back to restart your clear on bot side. Dragon should be coming up (it spawns in at the 5 minute mark). On your first back, you should have bought Stalker's Blade and gotten your free Oracle Lens (or gotten oracle at level 1 after dropping a ward) and should be level 4 now. You can solo dragon at this point, just make sure it isn't warded. Continue to power farm and get level 6 as fast as possible. Take opportunities when you see the enemy jungler on the other side of the map to invade their jungle for camps. Knowing which side they started on will help you know what camps they've already taken. When you see the enemy jungler on the map just press tab and check their CS. Also look to see what buff(s) they have (red, blue, or both). Each camp is worth 4 cs.

Once you are level 6, your ganks are very strong. You can just run in with your Oracle Lens and your W Burnout on. The ganks with Shyvana are quite simple. Just ult Dragon's Descent on the enemies and use E Flame Breath and Q Twin Bite right away- preferably you would land ult to be right on top of them so you don't miss your E and deal more damage of course. Your E Flame Breath is the majority of your damage. If you were unable to burst the enemy, you back up and wait until your E is off cool down to use again while you're still in dragon form. It is important to note that attacking while in dragon form will extend its duration so you can continue to attack lane minions while you are waiting for your E Flame Breath to be off cool down!

Objectives
Continue to farm and gank while keeping an eye on the dragon's spawn timer so you can quickly take dragon on spawn. Note: The 1st dragon spawns at 5 minutes and each next dragon will spawn 5 minutes after the previous one was taken. Shyvana is super fast at taking dragons because her passive Fury of the Dragonborn allows her to deal 20% bonus damage to them! She does not need her teammates to help her get dragons. Dragons are also super strong on Shyvana because, also as part of her passive, she gets an additional 5 armor + 5 MR for each dragon her team gets. It is important that you play around this strength of hers because it will help her scale nicely later into the game (and of course your entire team as well). Shyvana is more of a mid/early late game champion so once you've reached your power spike at level 6 and start gaining your lead, you will want to look to close the out game before the true late game comes. Rift Herald spawns in at the 8 minute mark. A great time to get rift would be right after your ultimate goes on cool down from ganking. The 1st Rift Herald is generally far superior because at this point there is still turret plating which offers gold for each plate destroyed. This can give your laner(s) a lead and in addition, can allow them to roam more freely if the turret is taken which could start snowballing the game to a victory. Also, while attacking turrets remember that Shyvana's Q Twin Bite can be used to help take turret's faster. The best part? It costs no mana ;)

You should be clearing jungle camps non stop (for the gold and XP of course but Shyvana also needs to attack things to build up Fury and get her ultimate off cool down sooner) But as soon as your ultimate comes up then go in for a gank. You don't NEED your ultimate to gank. If the enemy is half health or pushed up too far, you can gank without your ultimate Dragon's Descent. However, Shyvana's ultimate comes up rather quickly so only go in without it if it's free because you will get it off cool down in no time if you are farming.

Don't forget to pick up a Dark Seal early on to start stacking and increase your AP/damage.

Items
Honestly, there's not too much variety when it comes to your build path options for AP Shyvana. That does make it a little less fun to play, in my opinion, but it's also great because you can focus more on other things rather than worrying if you built the right item. If you have a fully stacked Dark Seal and you feel there's high chance of survival- you should upgrade to Mejai's Soulstealer! (In this case, you'll want to have a front line and may not want to ult into the enemy team unless you & your team is far ahead) You should build Nashor's Tooth after your jungle item + Sorcerer's Shoes. *If you are having trouble surviving, you could go either Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi however those aren't as optimal and should only be purchased if truly needed. After Nashors, you can build an Oblivion Orb because this does flat magic pen and is strong earlier in the game. Afterwards, you can build your Rabadon's Deathcap. After Deathcap, you can finish your Morellonomicon or if needed (you are playing in a situation where you are dying to a burst champion)- you can pick up a Zhonya's Hourglass for its active and worry about finishing the morellos after. Void Staff can be purchased as a final item.

Getting Picks/Team Fighting
If you are ahead, you should be able to quickly kill squishy enemy champions if they are alone or... if they are grouped and you are unable to ult in without dying, you can still use your ultimate from a distance and deal a large amount of damage with your E. You should be able to kill squishy enemies with just 2 E's if you are ahead. Keep in mind that R Dragon's Descent has long range can be used short range as well if you have your cursor right in front of (or behind to go backwards) your champion. However, you can not ult in place. The shortest distance possible is about the same distance you will travel with your Flash so that keep in mind. For team fighting on Shyvana, make sure you continue to farm until your ultimate is up. Don't sit around and wait for a fight to break out when your ultimate isn't even up yet. Go get fury stacks so you can ult into the fight. You're actually highly reliant on your dragon form (ultimate) so if it isn't up yet, just ping your teammates away and wait until you have it. The vast majority of your damage as AP Shyvana comes from your E Flame Breath and this does the massive damage in dragon form.

If the enemy team has a front line, you can flank from the side or the back to ult in and kill the squishy back line after the fight has started. If the enemy team is all squishy, you can just ult in from the front after the team fight has started and burn them all down.

Objectives
You should be continuing to look at the spawn timer for Dragons so that you can pick up dragon soul if the game goes on long enough. Make sure that you are pinging this out to your teammates ahead of time. If you are pinging that it is already up, chances are you're too late. Sneaking the 1st 1 or 2 dragons is typically much easier and can be done alone but usually the later dragons become more tricky and team reliant as teammates are now able to focus on objectives as a team rather than focusing on laning phase. I'd recommend pinging the dragon a minute ahead of time (the grey indicator on the mini map) so that your teammates will (hopefully) be prepared and typing "reset for dragon" or pinging out if your top laner has teleport up can be helpful so that your team is all on the same page. Sometimes, we are too far behind to do anything about dragon and have to give it up. If you have smite and want to risk a guaranteed death for a chance to steal it, that could be a good plan IF it's YOUR soul dragon or the enemy team already has a couple of dragons and you're needing a high-risk, high-reward play. However, there's no reason in this situation that your entire team should die at dragon for free. Danger ping them away and if you are able, you could quickly type "leave, I steal".
