[11.17] PH45's guide to Qiyana, Empress of the Elements!

By PH45
Hello, I'm PH45, and this is my guide to Qiyana.

I am ThisIsPatrik, I'm a long time League of Legends player (started back in late Season 1). I'm a top lane main, and I mostly play bruisers in top lane. I reached Diamond 5 first time in Season 7, and peaked Master during Season 11.

My OP.GG for anyone interested

I also got multiple other accounts but right now I mainly play on the account I listed above.

Check out my Twitch, I've gotten more into streaming in the past months so come and check it out while I play live!

Pros

+ Very powerful ultimate
+ Has a dash that goes over walls
+ Interesting mechanic based on elements and placement on the rift
+ Has crowd control with her Q and R
+ Has stealth built-in to her kit

Qiyana has good teamfighting capabilities thanks to her ultimate, which offers a lot of beneficial area to fight in especially during river and jungle skirmishes.
Cons

- Hard to master
- Relies on utilizing correct elements in certain situations
- No sustain or shields
- Hard to play from behind
- Lacks proper waveclear

Qiyana can have some trouble playing out from behind, though she can still setup kills with her Ice element Q and R.

Flash: Best summoner spell in the game, period. It gives you the chance to either escape from a sticky situation, or follow in for a closing blow on the enemy/to get in range for a play.

Ignite: Good for lanes you want to go aggressive on. Since Qiyana is designed to be an assassin, they usually take this summoner spell to seal the deal on assassinating someone, preventing them from healing the damage up and so on.

Teleport: Great choice if you want to play around your team, or if you are in a tough matchup where you know you'll get forced out a lot or if the matchup in general will most likely not result in kills. With this summoner spells you'll get map presence and pressure, since you can splitpush and teleport into teamfights if needed.

This page is the basic and solid assassin rune setup.

Domination is great choice if you want some extra damage for bursting targets and also mobility to sneak up on them.

Solid choice for any assassin. Gives you extra burst damage for trades and all-ins to make your targets pop faster.

I find both of these to be great choices, although Taste of Blood is more of a pick for harder lanes and Sudden Impact if you are confident on surviving lane phase.
Simply offers extra damage when you stack it up. Overall feels like the most fitting rune out of the 3 choices from the row.
Ravenous Hunter imo fits more the dps bruiser builds, and Relentless hunter the more assassin type builds and playstyles. You'll be roaming far easier with Relentless Hunter and also sneaking up on your targets with the extra mobility it offers.

Precision will give you tools to potentially survive in a fight due to clutch healing from Triumph and also some tenacity to help dealing with CC.

This rune is really nice since it offers you mana regen when damaging enemy champions, and on takedowns it restores some mana back. This allows you to stay on the map for longer and potentially extend your teamfighting as well.

I find Last Stand to be a really good rune. Since you are overall quite squishy as Qiyana, you can often end up low HP quickly. With this rune you can maximize your damage output if you get low HP, since you can buy some time in fights with your stealh Q.

Royal Privilege
Royal Privilege: Qiyana's next basic attack or damaging ability against an enemy deals bonus physical damage. This effect cannot occur on the same target more than once every few seconds. The cooldown on all targets is reset upon attaining or changing an Element.
Edge of Ixtal

Edge of Ixtal: Qiyana slashes forward in a line, dealing physical damage, reduced to 75% damage against subsequent units beyond the closest.

Upon attaining an Element, this ability is upgraded and the cooldown is reset.

Activating the ability while an element is selected, will result in Qiyana hurling her blade, which detonates in a line upon either colliding with an enemy or reaching it's maximum range, dealing damage and applying a bonus effect based on the selected element.

River: Roots for a short period, then slows the targets by 20% for 1 second.

Wall: Enemies below 50% maximum HP take 60% bonus damage.

Brush: The blade raises a grass trail behind for 3.5 seconds, granting Qiyana invisibility and 20% bonus movement speed until exiting or attacking.
Terrashape

Terrashape: When activated, Qiyana dashes towards target location, potentially gaining an Element from either the wall, river or brush that she targeted.

Passively, if holding an element Qiyana gains 5/10/15/20/25% bonus attack speed, her basic attacks and basic abilities deal bonus magic damage, and she gains out-of-combat bonus movement speed while moving through the Element she currently holds.
Audacity

Audacity: Qiyana dashed a fixed distance towards the targeted unit, dealing physical damage. Audacity will not apply damage on the target, if the target is not within 250 range at the end of the dash, meaning opponents can dodge the damage with a long enough leap/dash or with Flash.

If she casts Edge of Ixtal during Audacity, it will aim at the dash target.

Supreme Display of Talent

Supreme Display of Talent: Qiyana sends a windblast in the target direction that knocks back enemies hit. The windblast stops upon hitting a wall.

The windblast creates a shockwave across any river or brush it passes through, as well as around the borders of wall it reaches, dealing physical damage and stunning enemies for a short period.

Prowler's Claw
Gives you good stats, and gives you also a free dash onto your opponent, that also gives you 15% increased damage on the target for 3 seconds, which helps you assassinate them even easier.

Serpen't Fang Serpent's Fang
Really valuable item especially in the current meta. It's quite cheap and it offers good damage, and allows you to break shields, which is really handy when you try to assassinate someone. Since items like Immortal Shieldbow and Sterak's Gage exist, and a lot of supports have shielding, this item can get a lot of value very quickly.

Ionian boots of Lucidity
Really good boots since they give you a lot Haste for the cost and also reduces your summoner spells cooldowns a bit.

Mercury's treads
Pretty self-explanitory, get this if the opposing team has a lot of CC as it can shut you down pretty well.

Plated Steelcaps
I don't really ever buy these on Qiyana, but in some cases they might be viable, if you are behind vs auto attack reliant composition for example.

Guardian Angel
A saving grace item sometimes, since Qiyana has to get close to kill her targets, this item will come in handy since you really don't have any escape mechanisms outside your stealth and summoner spells.

Muramana
This item gives really insane scaling with it's amount of AD, Haste and mana + the on-hit damage. It might hinder your early a bit since you need to buy tear and stack it, but once your Manamune upgrades to Muramana you get a lot of power added to your kit.

Serylda's Grudge
Serylda's Grudge is a really good item for it's cost. It gives Haste, armor penetration and AD, and your abilities and autos slow affected units, which helps you stick onto them. If your opponents are however more tanky and have a lot of health, you can opt for Lord Dominik's Regards instead since it gives you extra damage vs those high HP enemies, while still offering armor penetration.
Her lane phase depends quite a lot on the matchup. Qiyana's first levels are quite weak so usually you aren't going to get good trades in during first levels. If you manage to not get poked down too much, and the wave is in a favorable spot, you can potentially go for an all-in once you hit level 3.

Most of the time it's better to let the wave be on your side of the lane, since it's overall safer for you, and you have more distance to chase your opponents down during an all-in.

Qiyana's Edge of Ixtal is a great poking tool with it's relatively short cooldown. You can guarantee it to hit if you cast it during your Audacity.

You can also use your Audacity as an escape by sort of using it like Yasuo's E, by dashing into creeps.

You'll want to pickup elements based on your needs. Brush element will give you stealth and mobility, while wall element gives you extra damage to damaged targets, and river element grants you CC, so choose it based on the situation you are, or you think you will be in.

Look at the combos section for combos to do while trading in lane, you don't have to follow them, but most of them are pretty solid and give you nice damage output for lane phase.

Generally, you want to be always holding an Element since they don't time out until you actually use them.

Remember to weave in autos during trades and while laning since her passive Royal Privilege is a good boost to your damage while trading.

Qiyana is also a pretty solid roamer. After pushing the lane, take the river element and you'll get extra movement speed while walking across the river. With the river element you'll be able to potentially CC the other lanes opponent and potentially score a kill, or at the very least apply some pressure. Always be looking for some roaming chances since it will help your team out.

During mid-late game, you should look to assassinate lone targets, or find good ultimates in skirmishes and teamfights. You can distract your enemies with the stealth path you leave with brush element Edge of Ixtal, or you can root your enemies with the river element Edge of Ixtal.

If you want to assassinate and sneak up on enemies, prepare the brush element, and if you are roaming/ganking, choose the river element to CC your enemies. The wall element is most of the time when you already are fighting since it will deal extra damage if they are below half HP.
+

- You can kind of do an insec by using your Audacity on the target, then using Supreme Display of Talent to throw the target towards your team.

+ + +

- A good trading combo starts with preparing your Terrashape with an element. After the cooldown has come back up use your Edge of Ixtal, followed by Terrashape into another Edge of Ixtal. Optionally you can start the trade with Audacity and combine your Edge of Ixtal with it since it will automatically target the dash target.

+ +

- You can surprise your enemies by casting Supreme Display of Talent, followed by Flash immediately after the cast of your ult has begun, finishing off with Edge of Ixtal.

+ + + + +

- This combo is for longer trades/all-ins. River element will help you to succeed in this combo since it'll give you more time to complete it. If you use the brush element instead, you can proc Duskblade of Draktharr, if you use Brush element twice, you can proc Duskblade of Draktharr twice.
- Qiyana can dash through most of the thin walls in Summoner's Rift with Terrashape if you are correctly positioned. This comes in handy while ganking, roaming and escaping.

- Only use the rock element when your enemies are actually below 50% HP, otherwise it's basically worthless to use, brush and river elements are far more usable in most cases.

- You can cancel your Edge of Ixtal animation with both Terrashape and Audacity.

- While returning to lane from base, grab the wall element with your Terrashape and run near walls to gain extra movement speed to get to lane faster. Respectively while roaming through the river use the river element to move faster.

- You can dash over walls with your Audacity as well, though it requires a target like Raptors or Gromp for an example.

- Hold your elements when you aren't required to use them, since they grant you bonus attack speed and on-hit damage thanks to your Terrashape.
Qiyana has a lot of cool traits to her kit, especially since she literally revolves around playing with the elements of Summoner's Rift!

Have fun conquering your opponents base and nexus as Qiyana!
