Threats & Synergies
Very hard counter, since he has all the utility to dodge your abilities constantly. Would recommend asking for ganks when his E is down.
Same as Fizz, can dash through your E to get to you. Uses his ult to negate your ult, very hard match up, would also recommend asking your jungler for a gank as early as possible.
Pretty easy since you outrange her in the early game, once she hits level 6 though, make sure you always save your E for when she decides to go aggro on you (dashing).
Very easy lane, constantly harass him, poke him. Save your E for when he decides to pull out his gold card, so he can't get near you.
Even though Kassadin is a amazing an denying certain AP champs, syndra can work past that. Never let him walk him to Q you, and as Syndra you should always be poking him when his Q is down so he can't shield your damage, don't forget to keep auto'ing him pre-6 too.
Always make sure you save your E for when he wants to get close to you/ult you. This will be the only way of getting him away from you. Apart from that, poke him pre-6 and take barrier if you're not fond of the match up.
Since she can jump straight to you, I'd highly recommend not using your E aggressively. Wait till she ever jumps on you, then use it. Don't use your E in a panic otherwise this'll get you killed.
Very easy since you always out range him.
Another AP counter, save your E until he decides to charge in so he can't taunt you. Other than that, poke him constantly and wait till level 6 to all in him.
Ok, so I found Yasuo to be completely aggravating to deal with. Baiting his windwall is extremely hard since your E animation isn't exactly fast. I'd highly recommend trying to bait his W out to do anything to him. Otherwise he'll be able to walk all over you.
Very easy to poke in lane, don't go anywhere near her shroud when she has it up. And all her whenever you get the chance, always make sure you're behind minions too then she'll never be able to hit her E.
Bit difficult for Syndra since you both have long range, the only problem is that Azir has the mobility with his E-Q combo. I'd recommend playing as aggro as possible early before his 6. Call for ganks if needed.
Short range mage like Ryze, shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't let her hit her Q. If she does make sure to use your E to push her away.
Shouldn't be too hard to deal with. You can get rid of his passive shield with your Q and repeat for combos. Did you know? You can pre E -Q combo when malzahar goes to ult you and it will cancel his ult completely :)
Poke him as much as possible in lane since he'll never be able to reach you. If he attempts to fly at your with his stun, just E him away. You shoudn't any problems with this match up at all.
Not extremely hard, but not too easy either, I'd recommend baiting out her black shield so you can get your Q-E combo off on her. Other than that, harass her as much as possible.
Bit more of a tricky match up since he has his W to pool the majority of your abilities. Try baiting this out before deciding to burst him. Also be careful of his E-W flash combo.
Since you both have insane range, this'll mainly be a skill match up. Don't get hit by her sleepy bubble and make sure you hit your Q - E combo. Who ever gets their CC off wins basically.
Pretty even since you both have good range, dodge her Q CC and you'll win. Vice versa.
Since Lux W can tank a bit of your burst, wait until her shield is down before deciding to burst her. If she does spam her shield never go to all in her since your full combo with be denied by her return shield. Poke her throughout laning phase and do short burst combos.
Pretty dangerous champ to play against after level 6. Would recommend getting of as many poke as possible as quickly as you can. If you Q - E then W make sure this is done as fast as you can since she can deny the W damage if your stun comes off. Stay away from her Q at level 6, since this will be her chance of getting onto you. Waveclear and roam if possible.
Not played a lot in mid lane nowadays but be mindful of his W (or E) - Q combo. Stay behind minions as often as possible to avoid this.
Stay away from his Q range and you'll be able to poke him out throughout the whole laning phase. Make sure you only use your E if you know you're going to hit him otherwise you will have to play passive dude to his Q engage.
Don't get caught by his cage and you'll win this easily. You outdamage him at any part of the game until late of course when he can just press R. But always stay out his R range and you'll be fine.
Dodge his E and you'll win this match up easily since his Q is short range and his only main ability that he does damage with. Constantly poke him and all in him with ignite so he doesn't heal when he goes into his ult form.
Syndra is basically the biggest counter to heimerdinger since you can pick up his turrets with your W. Constantly poke him with Q as well. Easy win.
Short range mage so you out-range her. Just watch out for her level 6 flash R combo, make sure to save your E for this.
Skill match up. If he hits hit knock up, you'll get burst down. Make sure you save your E for when you think he'll use R since this will take him out of it.
Short range mage, but with a complication. Don't get poked out with her Q splash and make sure to bait her ult, so you don't end up ult'ing her R.
Tricky match up since she has long range and a shield to protect her from your burst. I'd recommend asking for ganks with this match up.
Mainly a poke match up/dodge match up. Your level 6 beats his though, play aggressive into him with Q-E to combo with your W then R at level 6. Buy zhonya's if you think you're taking too much damage from his ult.
Poke him as much as possible during early and never let him get to W range since he'll be able to heal off of you.
Mainly a skill match up, don't let her hit her enhanced root on you and try your best to not get caught in her ult, otherwise you'll need to force a summoner to not die.
Not easy, nor hard. Make sure to Q him when his Q is down, so he doesn't negate your damage. Using Q-E when he decides to walk up to you to Q/E you and trade with him efficiently, make sure he doesn't get both Q's and his E off on you otherwise he will wins trades.
A nice poke match up, dodge all of his Q's and try and he all your Q's. You both work the same way since you're disengage is your E, same with his time bomb. Make sure you play as aggressive as possible if he isn't able to hit his skillshots.
Works simliar to Syndra, both have stun and both have poke. Try to dodge as much of his poke as possible (buy booys first if needed) and all in him whenever you get the chance to.
Since Taliyah's W doesn't have the range your Q-E combo does, you shouldn't have any problems with range in this match up. Q poke as often as you can and avoid her W, you should win this match up if you follow the above.
As long as he doesn't hit a double bomb on you, you'll be fine during laning, the problem occurs when he hits 6. Since he denies your ult with hit ult. The only thing I can suggest is perhaps getting your jungler to gank you to get his ult down, the use your ult once his ult is on cooldown.
Quite easy since your poke will always out-trade her, don't let her dash into you, and always save your E for the moment where she does attempt this.
Easy to poke, make sure you leave enough of a gap between you and him since if he's able to get a Q-E combo off onto you, you'll most likely have to blow a summoner to get out of the rest of his combo. Keep your distance from him!
Quite easy to deal with. When he E's in just counter him with the Q+E combo or just E him away. He won't be able to get any damage off. Poke him throughout the whole laning phase too. When he hits 6, save your E for when he uses R since he can teleport through your E.
Champion Build Guide

Syndra was my first ever mid lane champion that I played. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking to play a high-burst, semi-high skill cap one shot machine.
+ Long-range poke (great for laning phase)
+ Insane burst damage
+ Fantastic waveclear
+ Great AOE CC
+ Fun to learn!
- Bad positioning = very easily punished
- Skillshot reliant
- Semi-high skill cap
- Hard to carry with

You can play Syndra passively or aggressively, mainly depending on what the mid/jungle synergy is. For example if you're playing against a Shyvana jungle and Cassiopeia midlane then you can pretty much play aggressive the whole time since Shyvana won't really be able to do anything pre-6. On the other hanf if you're against a Zed mid and Elise jungle, you'd want to try and poke as much as you can but not overextend since you'll most likely get caught by Elise. You should always take Flash. Syndra is extremely immobile and you'll need this as an escape route.
Another great option if you're really not down to play against Assassin's like LeBlanc, Zed, Talon. This will help prevent high-burst champions from 100-0'ing you instantly. It will give you a little chance to fight back and has a much lower cooldown than Heal.
Another great summoner spell to take after the above. As an immobile mid laner, you're prone to getting CC'ed a lot by junglers like Rammus, Elise and Sejuani. Even mid laners that have CC too. It also saves you from having to waste money on a Quicksilver Sash.
Again, this summoner spell is only viable if you plan on skirmishing a lot and healing other allies in team fights. Good option, but the others above are a lot more viable.
High burst champs such as, Katarina, Zed, Talon don't do well against exhaust since all their damage is "all-in" damage. I'd recommend taking this if you're not willing to play aggressive into these type of champions.
Domination - Primary Tree
|With any burst type of mage/assassin, Electrocute will be your bread and butter rune. With Electrocute you'll need to hit all of your pre-6 abilites in order for it to proc. At level 2 you will need to add an auto attack after hitting a successful Q + E combo for Electrocute to proc.|
|Since you're a long range mage this'll be a perfect rune to help you sustain in lane. Enemies will also struggle to trade with you if they have no gap closers, since you'll be able to out range them and heal yourself.|
|Again, you need all the power you can get early-mid game, so that you're a monster late game. Syndra is pretty decent at roaming since you can hard push waves. Try to roam as much as possible to maximize the potential of this rune.|
|Since Syndra is an immobile mage, you're going to need all the movement speed you can get to help you dodge skillshots and roam around the map faster. I'd highly recommend taking this rune.|
Sorcery - Secondary Tree
|Personally, I like to take Transcendence on Syndra due to the fact that, if you're not running Ultimate Hunter then you'll always have some backup ability haste for your abilities.|
A common swap would be Electrocute to Arcane Comet. Now with the Sorcery tree, you'd then run Arcane Comet > Manaflow Band > Absolute Focus > Scorch. This build is mainly focused on the players who can hit 90%+ of their abilities and can discipline themselves to not take significantly bad trades. You'll be poking the enemy constantly with both extra damage from Arcane Comet, Absolute Focus and Scorch and your lane opponent will be in need to constantly dodge your abilities which will result in them being zoned from farming minions waves and also using abilities to dodge your skillshots.
It's also quite common to run the Inspiration tree along side Sorcery since you'll benefit from the utility/sustain affects from Magical Footwear which grants you a free pair of boots and Biscuit Delivery which helps you sustain in lane for even longer and allows you to then poke your enemies out more often.
Another rune which you can take is Ultimate Hunter instead of Relentless Hunter. I would only take this if you're really good at dodging skillshots and want a lower Unleashed Power cooldown.
Dark Sphere is Syndra's main ability. Everything she uses is based around her sphere's, this will always be maxed first.
Scatter the Weak will be maxed second. This is maxed early because it gains a massive 50% width at max rank. It is also extremely low cooldown when max which can help us get out of sticky situations. Can also be used to initiate.
Unleashed Power is always maxed third. This is Syndra's bread and butter ability. Point and click massive damage. At max rank (level 16) this ability has 75 more range.
You want to max Force of Will last. Once this is maxed at level 18 you will then deal 20% true damage which is a lot in late game.
Dark Sphere: Deals 25% more damage against champions.
Force of Will: Deals 20% bonus true damage.
Scatter the Weak: Spell width increased by 50%.
Unleashed Power: Range increased by 75.
Early game Items
|As with most mages/AP mid lane champs, Doran's Ring is the standard starting item as it gives AP, HP, extra damage to minions and mana on minion kill. Since you'll be trying to poke a lot, it's definitely recommended to take this over Corrupting Potion so you can get free mana back from killing minions. You will also take 2 Health Potion's to help you sustain HP in lane.|
|Core 1st back item for most AP laners. It gives AP, mana, +10% ability haste and even a mana regen passive on levelling up, all for an incredible 1300g. This will sustain you easily through the rest of your early laning phase.|
|This again is a very good item to get if you ever have a spare 150g on an early back. It refreshes every time you go back to base and it means you never have to buy Health Potion's again. I would not recommend buying this past the 12+ minute mark though. Don't be afraid to sell any leftover Health Potion's that are in your inventory just to buy this.|
Tear of the Goddess
|Since Syndra has had plenty of mana nerfs over a long period of time, building this has now become one of her early game core items. This gives you a nice mana boost in lane to help out with the poking and grants bonus mana when hitting enemies with abilities.|
|The core of all AP mid laner items. It gives massive AP, lots of mana and 20 ability haste. The passive also helps with waveclear (even though Syndra already has enough) and damage on your enemy. Using a single Dark Sphere on the ranged minions, will wipe them out 100%. You can also Dark Sphere + Force of Will to 100% clear a melee minion wave too.|
|These are the boots that you want to be buying the majority of the time as they will help with your damage output. If you need the extra flat magic penetration, pairing these with your Oblivion Orb will help help with the early game damage, since FLAT magic penetration is extremely good early-mid game.|
|Since you got your Tear of the Goddess during laning phase you should have hit max stacks by the time you start building the components for Archangel's Staff. Again, this item is crucial on Syndra now due to her mana nerfs.|
|This will be either your 3rd or 4th item. It is the strongest mid-late game item on mages. If enemies have lots of MR, you will need a Void Staff before buying Rabadon's Deathcap.|
|As defensive as it gets to be honest. It doesn't have to just be built because the enemy team is full AD but it can really save your life too with only a 2 minute cooldown. It can negate things like Karthus's Requiem, Veigar's Primordial Burst and Fizz's Chum the Waters. I don't recommend building this early at all. If you are really struggling in lane against an AD mid laner like Zed, Talon etc. I would build Seeker's Armguard just to help you against their damage. Don't bother completing Zhonya's Hourglass until 2nd since you'll ruin your early powerspike. I would still say that purchasing this item even towards late game is still worth - it could save your life.|
|So this item negates healing to put it bluntly. So it's pretty simple, if the enemy have healing, get this as your 3rd item. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM early if they don't have major healing. If the enemy team has multiple healing champs like Soraka , Aatrox , Swain you can build Oblivion Orb early to help.|
|This is a great item if you're afraid of being bursted down yourself i.e Fizz, Akali, LeBlanc or even Katarina. Banshee's Veil is well-known for it's spellshield passive which blocks a single ability which could potentially save your life if your opponent wasn't able to get their full combo off on you. It works great against CC champs like Sejuani, Elise, Zac, heck even Blitzcrank as it can stop one major ability which CC you to death. It also provides a nice 45 MR and 10 ability haste.|
|This is EXTREMELY situational and would very rarely purchase this item, I just put it in here just in case some people wanted to ask about it. This item is specifically only helpful if 3+ members of the enemy team are stacking health. A comp like, Kled, Zac, Ryze, Varus and Braum would probably be a time I'd purchase. Even then, I'd still prioritise magic pen if the enemy team were to stack magic resist.|
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
|Another very situational item. Would only build if you really needed kiting potential. For instance if the enemy composition consisted of a Jayce, Nidalee, Cassiopeia, Lucian and Leona which is quite a heavy initiating comp, Rylai's Crystal Scepter would help kite these champs out.|
If you're against a good matchup, you should aim to constantly zone the enemy from farming. Since you have extremely long range, and a low cooldown Dark Sphere use this to your advantage.
Going in for quick trades like I mentioned in the combo video above ( Dark Sphere + Scatter the Weak ) and not taking damage in return will benefit you extremely in the long run, since your lane opponent will have to make multiple returns to base just to regen. health.
Don't get too cocky in lane since Scatter the Weak is your engage tool AND disengage tool. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BUY A Control Ward WHEN YOU BACK. THIS IS EXTRA IMPORTANT AS AN IMMOBILE MAGE. Engage when you know there is no jungle nearby, and save it if you have not got a ward down and you are not sure where their jungler is. Scatter the Weak can save you from ganks pretty easily and you won't have to burn your Flash if used correctly. Again, reference the combo's video above this section if you're not sure what combo's to use in laning phase.
If you're against a bad matchup i.e Fizz, Yasuo or even Ekko try to avoid pushing your lane into their turret. Reason being is, Fizz and Ekko for example have gap closers and can easily dodge your Scatter the Weak which again is your ONLY disengage tool. If this is on cooldown, you'd have to burn a Flash which isn't good since it can leave you prone to ganks. Your goal against these types of champions is to survive.
If you somehow do manage to get a kill, use this to your advantage by pushing with Dark Sphere's and Force of Will quickly, then roaming. Remember, towards the late game, you outperform the majority of assassin's so play carefully.
You want to concentrate on getting vision when possible. That means, pushing waves as soon as possible so you can get some deep wards in the enemy jungle (whilst being with your jungler of course). Getting objective's like dragons and turret's are extremely important and again, zoning with your Scatter the Weak is extremely beneficial when doing these.
Your powerspikes with Syndra are mainly.
First powerspike > Level 9 Dark Sphere - which now adds 25% more damage to your Q's.
Second powerspike > Getting your first few items Sorcerer's Shoes, Luden's Tempest and Archangel's Staff / Seraph's Embrace for more core damage and mana.
Third powerspike > Will be getting your Rabadon's Deathcap or Void Staff depending on if the enemy has built magic resist or not.
Once you have hit one of the powerspikes above, use it to your advantage. Play aggressive, force objectives once you and your team have killed someone, and get vision on the enemies side of the map.
Late game teamfights are not the best for Syndra but they're not too bad either. Utilising your Dark Sphere + Unleashed Power + Scatter the Weak combo in a teamfight is a great way to stun multiple enemies and have your team mates finish them off. You can still try to one shot a carry with a full combo or, even down them to low health, which will then force them back to base and you'll be able to force objectives as a 5v4. Again, your main tool is Scatter the Weak so use it with caution. If you think someone will get onto one of your carries, use it to disengage. If you think you've got a good initiation comp, use it aggressively.

16/03/2021 - Full update to everything. I've revisited everything and taken everything which I've learnt in game and put it into this guide. I believe strongly that the core build on this guide is the best build for Syndra right now.
