Introduction
Galio is able to play many roles. I've seen Galio go mid, jungle, top, and support- everything but Marksman. Galio's biggest strengths are his incredible CC, his naturally high health pool, and his devastating all-in initiating. This has led me to believe that his true calling is either as an AP Tank top, or support.
Why not Mid?
Galio can definitely play mid-lane, but his damage just isn't high enough to justify taking mid over top-tier mids like Ahri, Fizz, Zed, and Yasuo. Leave mid to the carries! That said, Galio can usually hold his own if played correctly, and can be a decent choice if your team lacks bulk and needs a mid-laner.
I think what most people are going to notice with this build is that it's first item is a Rod of Ages. Despite what you might think, achieving a 12 minute Rod of Ages is completely doable while supporting. I've found that with the proper runes and masteries Galio can stay in lane almost indefinitely. If you communicate with your adc and are smart with your Warding Trinket than you can maintain vision throughout the laning phase without a sightstone. It's easy enough to incorporate a Locket of the Iron Solari into this build, after your Rod of Ages, boots of speed, and Sightstone are completed.
