Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Champion's Like Nid that take advantage of bushes (Rengar, Kha, etc.) have hard times dealing with traps so you will see them often. And if need hits you with a spear save your net for when she jumps at you. It will make space and slow her down. Depending on how low you are she might just give up afterwards.
Lee Sin
This is honestly one of your worst nightmares as AP Cait you already have a hard time dealing with tanks but a one that can basically close the gap non-stop basically means your dead unless he's not very good.
Garen
You are irrelevant to this giant. You can net and trap as much as you want but he won't care. You can escape pretty easily but you will never kill him or tanks similar to him.
LeBlanc
This one is tricky but not impossible. Since they nerfed the speed of Leblanc's Dash (Her W) it is easier to Net her when she does it and avoid the damage completely. Also, you can Net to not get rooted by chains. If you get really good you can put a trap where she began her dash so if she blinks back she gets rooted.
Fizz
Fizz is the Prime Evil but your escapes should be enough to keep him at bay. Killing him will be nearly impossible and if he hits you with the fish your dead guaranteed cleanse doesn't drop the fish.
Yasuo
If yasuo is smart he will stop wind walling your AA and maybe even your Q and will save it for your net and your Ult. Once he does that he has the potential to make your entire kit irrelevant. I hate this champion.
Malzahar
This matchup is suprisingly not that bad. Your kit keeps you out of Ult range and away from almost all his abilities. The only way he should be able to lock you down is if he flashes and if he does well...your probably dead.
Alistar
At support this is probably your worst matchup. Even though you do out range his damage your damage will be completely negated by his heal. Plus he gets tanky and AP Cait doesn't far well with tanks.
Vayne
Vayne, before she hits late game and terraforms everything, is one of the easiest matchups. Even though she can tumble the Net still isn't hard to hit. And if she does tumble your ADC can now hit their skillshots without her tumbling. Also when she ults your traps will grant incredible vision. Also, about your ult, it grats vision until the bullet hits a target. So even if Vayne tumbles you will still have vision.
Zed
Zed Pre 6 isn't really problem. But once he gets his Death Mark look out because that might be the end of all fun and games. Avoid this matchup pretty much at all costs. He will pop you like a balloon.
Janna
This matchup could be trouble some if the Janna is good enough to cancel your Net then your escape might be jeopardized. Also, she can shield herself to tank all your traps.
Morgana
Morgana can negate all your damage and CC with her black shield. As support you won't have Cleanse to save you from the "day lasting" snare and neither for the Ult. So keep your distance.
Blitzcrank
If you can avoid getting pulled this isn't that bad. Trap the bushes to keep vision of him and if he misses his pull. HARASS HARASS HARASS that is your chance to get as much poke out as possible because his lane presence drops significantly.
Thresh
Thresh is a bot lane terror. He can hook your ADC and since you don't build mikael's you can't save them. Other than your minimal CC. His flay can also cancel your Net assuring your death. This lane can be won if you can avoid thresh but to be safe avoid this match-up.
Gnar
Believe it or not I've played against this as AP Cait in the Top Lane. You have to stay away from him at almost all costs use your traps and you might actually find yourself getting a kill. When he's big poke him all you want but keep your distance. His all in combo can end you easy. utilize your cleanse smartly.
Caitlyn
Chances you are against another AP Cait are very slim. But against one at ADC is normal lol. If you attempt to poke her with basics then play it smartly for you have the same attack range. Watch for traps not because of damage but the pick potential.
Shaco
Specifically in Dominion. USE THOSE TRAPS. Shaco's love to just back door objectives away from their team. Put down some smart traps and your team might get and opprotunity to collapse on him. It will almost be your job to keep an eye on him and don't forget your ult gives vision so use it when you see and ally chasing and they're about to close the gap.
Ezreal
I'm afraid to say but this is actually a Skill Match-up. It's a battle of Prediction and Skill Shots. Who ever lands the most wins. However he will have an easier time having his Arcane Shift and everything.
Braum
Braum is a pretty bad match up but not impossible. He can stop your ult and your Net so your going to want to focus your poke on the ADC. if he's staying close to them try put traps around to separate them.
Graves
This can go either way. Graves will eventually be able to probably 100 to 0 you if you get to close to him because of his bursty nature. But if you see him coming you can Net him to avoid the Q damage. This is almost a Skill Match up but it does lean towards Graves.
Sona
Being against a Sustain Lane is pretty bad since all your damage is poke. So in the end your going to either have to All in or counter engage after they engage on you.
Leona
A standard Kill lane is going to be difficult since you lack hard disengage. sometimes your traps can be the perfect thing to help your ADC escape and they will be surprised and impressed. But something such as Leona Ult maybe a little too much for your little traps to handle
Master Yi
OK...so if he touches you your going to die. If he's chasing your ADC and he's ulting the only way your going to help is if you can place a perfect trap and even then he might still be able to keep up or he might change his mind and come for you.
Nocturne
Since they buffed Nocturne his ganks are destructive. If he gets on top of you or your ADC your done for. Even cleanse won't save you.
Warwick
Similar to Noc in the tense that he you can't get him off but since he doesn't have a spell shield you can slow him down, but if he ults hope your ADC buys a QSS.
Vi
LoL all these Junglers are very tough to deal with if they find themselves in your lane Vi is just impossble to get off your ADC but it is possible. Just Nets and Traps.
Sivir
You would think since sivir has a shorter attack range it would be easier but the spell shield renders putting them in lane useless. Your going to have to place them during a fight to ensure your not creating free mana for Sivir but other than that poking her is fairly easy.
Katarina
This match up actually isn't that bad. If she jumps on you and doesn't ult combo her. You can stand on a trap for the entire laning phase so she can't jump on you if you want. If she does ult, be prepared to cleanse ignite and Net to get out of range you will probably not have to flash here. But poking her should be fairly easy with you having a big range to attack and her being melee.
Akali
Basically the same as Katarina but easier pre 6. Just poke and poke and poke. Once shes 6 stand on a trap and Net her if she jumps on you. If you can't escape to a tower get pray for good traps because you can only Net once while she can Ult 4 times (infinitely)
Annie
DON'T DO IT!!!
Kalista
she is way to slippery. I've found that the only time she can't jump is if she isn't attacking so those rare moments when there aren't any minions in your poke as you please :P
Rek'Sai
If you can trap her and Net her she won't able to get to your ADC it's actually just that simple. But try not to get your Net cancelled by her knock up.
Nautilus
Nautilus Support is Hell. TOO BIG. TOO much damage without damage items. TOO Tanky. WAAAY TOO MUCH CC.
Lux
Lux is a "Hit one Skill shot the fight is over" kinda champ. Meaning her snare if she lands it she will all in and you will probably die unless shes the support. Use your cleanse and stay behind minions. Play it really safe. I haven't played against many Lux's so it's hard to say whether to play super safe or just when she can't combo.
This is my first Guide so constructive criticism. "Why would AP Cait be your first guide?" well because I love the play style and I honestly haven't played one champ that much I usually like to switch it up because I get bored of one play style but the style of AP Cait is never boring for me.
Also, If your looking for the "VS. Champion" section its under the dominion build. I accidentally typed it over there and was too lazy to retype all of it.
Runes
Runes
Marks: I've tried a lot of different ones but these I've found to work the best for me. 9x Greater Mark of Hybrid Penetration
Seals: This is where things get a little weird. I used to use armor and health but while I had those I was having mana problems but I couldn't find anywhere to fit them in. So if you want to build a morellonomican you can take 9x Greater Seal of Armor or 9x Greater Seal of Health/ Greater Health of Scaling Health
But if you don't build a Morellonomican {like me}, then take 9x Greather Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration
Glyphs: Another weird one, Magic Resist Glyphs do look good but then I noticed I had CDR problems and that getting to 40% CDR while maintaining damage was vital. So Now I take 9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction
Quints: I take 2 2x Greater Quint of Ability Power and 1x Greater Quint of Movement Speed for obvious reasons. You could just as easily take 3 Ability Power Quints its really personal preference but I like the Move Speed.

Gameplay
Gameplay
Honestly, If you want to play Caitlyn AP I suggest you take her to dominion. Playing her on Summoners Rift is fun by all means but to get to a level where going Mid isn't an insta feed is difficult.
When Playing AP Cait. You want to place traps in places where enemy champs like to walk so on edges of bushes. If your in lane you can spread them throughout the lane so they might step on them and grant you a free combo.
If your at support don't forget YOU ARE THE SUPPORT so don't be afraid to use your Ult for poke instead of securing kills the cooldown is relatively short.
Combos
Combos
You can just as easily E-Q combo as AP Cait as you can as Normal Cait.
The most damage you can do with a full combo is to have a trap previously placed then once they step on it place another trap under them and then E-Q combo into an Ult.
You can also do a similar combo without the previous placed trap. This combo begins with you placing a trap in front of them. This can be either when they're chasing you or running away. Then after E-Q combo to slow them down so when they walk over the trap it has time to arm then Ult if your far enough away for them not to interrupt you.
Gameplay Cont.
Gameplay Cont.
Playing AP Cait you must use the technique of kiting to the best of your ability. Using Nets and traps to gain distance from your opponent. People won't always be stupid enough to step on them when they are out in the open. So eventually you have to get clever with the placement. And even while your kiting they have to walk around the trap that's fine! They had to take time out of B-lining towards you to walk around the trap so you are still gaining distance away from them.
Summoner Spells
Summoner Spells
I recently changed my opinion on the spell Cleanse it is very helpful and can save you from imminent demise. I take it instead of Ignite ever since I lost to a mid lane full AP Leona who had her jungle Ekko camp my lane. Ever since that day CLEANSE5LYFE.
If you want to take Ghost by all means go for it
I discourage teleport because its just not for AP Cait :P
Ignite is OK but your not usually close enough to your target to get off a good one because your constantly kiting.
