Aphelios is pretty good against lower range ADCs and champs that lack burst. Focus on trying to not get rooted or take all-ins when he has white gun.
Level 1 he's pretty annoying because he outranges you so try not to trade with him if you don't have Q you can always do auto + q and then walk away and that would be worth it. But if he is able to space u and auto you for free lane will be hard. Other than that just watch out for his guns and all-ins most of the time you can just W/Q splash him from afar to get him low before fighting him.
Ashe
Smolder is really bad at early all-ins and Ashe is really good at forcing those. Don't put yourself in a position where she can run you down the lane with her slow and lethal tempo.
Depending on her and your support, she will run you down. This match up is really annoying but as long as you don't put yourself in a position for her to auto you to death you should be okay. Level 6 as long as you dodge her R she can't kill you. Try to play in bushes if you have control to poke her down making her unable to fight you.
Caitlyn
If she's good she can really abuse your poor laning phase, you can start to challenge her push a bit better at 25 stacks, just try to at least not get hit by any Qs or step on traps. This match up is hard no matter what supports you have, if it's melee vs melee its a lot easier than any other match up. You can give up cs/push if needed. Try to leave lane asap, it's a lot easier playing versus her in mid game.
Corki
You win if u trade him when he doesnt have gatling gun and dodge his Q bomb. This lane is support heavy dependent if you have an enchanter support and he has a meele it's not ideal. If you can dodge his r's and Q then you will always win the trade but he can W onto you whenever he wants to try to not get in range for him to.
Ezreal
Skill matchup on both sides, dodge Q and you win. Don't fight him if he has 5 stacks on his passive and try to fight in your minion waves.
Draven
Draven falls off like a rock, its ok to give some CS to avoid being sent back or getting chunked. You out scale him hard. Also a support matchup dependent lane. You can press W onto his axes whenever he goes to catch it for free poke.
Jinx
Her range can get annoying when she gets a few points in her Q and its impossible to out shove her early in lane. She's pretty easy to kill at 6. This lane is also support match up dependent so play around your support spells. You can beat her in a 1v1 if you ambush her in a bush whenever you have lane prio.
Kai'Sa
Kaisa has a bad lane until she gets her first item. Then she beats you in 1v1 if at level 6 if she hits you with a W. She's really annoying to 1v1 so always try to stay with your team.
Kalista
Lane bully and has good all-in at 6. Like Draven, it's ok to give some CS early since you outscale her. Also don't get surprised by random all-ins because she can do that whenever she wants. Support match up doesn't matter at all in this lane because she can kill you every single time she goes in. Try to poke her with your W and stay out of all in range.
Jhin
Not much of a threat. Just don't get 4th shot for free. He should be easy to all-in at 6. You can trade with him with all your abilities for perma free stacks because he can't hit back frequently. I usually walk up to him whenever I have all 3 of my abilities off CD. He doesn't do much damage + he's slow. As long as you dodge his W and Q bounces you win all your trades.
Hwei
Most Mage bots will have you sitting under your tower for a while. Just try to stabilize and use TP efficiently. You can kill hwei if you dodge any of his e abilities by flying onto him most of the time. Wait for him to use his Q on something before all inning.
Lucian
He's a lot more annoying to deal with if he has an enchanter due to the magic damage he gets with his passive. You have to play pretty safe but usually they'll get an ego and play too aggressive at some point and you can punish them. You out scale him later on anyways but laning is gonna be rough. Try to dodge his q's through minions and you should be fine.
Lux
Most Mage bots will have you sitting under your tower for a while. Just try to dodge her spells, you can kill her in a 1v1 at level 3+ if you can dodge her Q.
Mel
Mel is a nightmare for smolder. She can reflect every single ability you have and there's not much you can do about it. Try to play around her W cooldown. If she uses w incorrectly you can just e onto her and kill her. Bait out her w with your w and poke her with Q splash from minions.
Miss Fortune
Another annoying lane bully that you'll outscale as long as you dont get pooped on too hard. Don't get hit by her Q off a minion and you'll live.
Nilah
Smolder'd Nilah matchup isnt as bad as some other adcs since he has a lot of ability damage. Just don't get your E interrupted by her ult and don't Q while she has her dodge up and you're fine.
Samira
Completely support dependent matchup. If you have an enchanter you're cooked if you have a melee you're chillin. Try to not auto her, your trades should consist of using your abilities especially if she has a melee support. If it's a range support, you can walk up and trade with her more comfortably. As long as you don't get CC'd she shouldn't be able to kill you until level 6. At level 6 just play safe and play around your support's CDs. Bait her w with your w.
Swain
You don't really have the DPS to kill him if he ults for a while. Don't get hit by his E and he's a free lane.
Senna
She's not annoying enough in lane to be much of a threat to your scaling. She also does no damage at all. Same as jhin, you can perma trade with her for free on CD.
Seraphine
She's basically just a second enchanter in the lane. She gives a relatively easy lane for you but her utility can scale really well too depending on her team comp. Can be annoying if paired with another mage. As long as you dodge her E your lane should be free.
Sivir
Sivir's W is annoying but it's not the end of the world. She's not enough of a bully to kick you out of lane as long as you dodge her Q and stay away from minions if she's using W. you probably won't have lane prio until first item but after that she's pretty easy to kill.
Twitch
Not much you can do against him especially if he's AP. His W slow makes your E pretty bad at getting away so you're just a sitting duck waiting to die to him. Pink wards and using your brain to not get jumped helps. He will win 1v1 fights 100% of the time through the whole game. Try to stay near your team and use your entire kit on him as soon as you see him.
Vayne
Free lane until level 6. At level 6 whenever she has ult, she can run you down. Even standing a bit far from minion waves she can still run you down. Try to play on your side of the map unless you were able to get ahead of her level 1-5.
Varus
Super annoying especially if he's lethality. If he's lethality just dodge what you can and try to cs well. This lane is really miserable but it's a lot better once you're out of lane. You outscale and out perform him in teamfights as long as you didn't feed him.
Syndra
Outranges you and you're an easy target for her stun and you don't really have any way to threaten her. Pray for jg or support gap and dodge what you can.
Tristana
Smolder is bad at early all-ins and Tristana is one of the best champs at forcing those. Play safe and ask for a peel support if you can (braum, alistar) Heavy a support matchup dependent lane, you have to always give lane prio.
Xayah
Xayah isn't much of a threat to you as long as you play outside of her feathers. Easy lane and you out scale her.
Zeri
Zeri's early lane isn't threatening but she has a really strong all-in at 6. Support match up dependent lane. If your support is smart you win, if they aren't you lose.
Yunara
Yunara isn't too bad as long as you play around your cooldowns and take short trades. Don't let her catch you without your E or in a position where she can run you down. Play around her Q CD and you should be fine.
Yasuo
Windwall make smolder sad, smolder lose stacks, can't really trade or all-in. Just don't get near him without E. He's free stacks if you position correctly early. Lane is a bit hard if you don't have a melee match up, try to stay away from minions as much as possible. Use your E to dodge his tornado Q.
Kog'Maw
He's annoying since his E can lock you into a longer trade and its hard to fly out of it. Smolder should scale better as long as you stack well. Laning versus him is really annoying because you can't really trade him as long as he has W which is going to be most of the time because he won't use it to cs. Try to cs what you can and get out of lane asap.
Akshan
Does a lot of damage and can just perma kill you. At level 2, if he swings on you, he can and will kill you. If you have an enchanter then be prepared to be sad.
Ziggs
Usually he just perma clears which is good for you, you win as long as you dodge his q's. this lane is a free lane :3
Bard
bards a pretty ok support, he does a lot of damage early on which can get you lane prio depending on who you're against. Play around his slows and stuns, whenever he slows/stuns them you can w/q for free.
Alistar
in an alistar lane, you probably have no prio level 1 which can be rough. But if the alistar is good he will flash knock up and push someone into turret range level 2-3 and that will probably win you the lane. Use your abilities around his combos for free stacks.
Amumu
play around his q and let him face tank everything and you should be fine.
Blitzcrank
blitzcrank is a pretty ok support he doesn't offer much damage even if he hits a hook. whenever he hooks someone try not to all in unless he has ignite, it most likely will be a mini trade cause you both don't do damage LOL
Braum
super easy support to play with esp if you're versus melee. use your q to proc his passive and just play around that mostly.
Elise
play around her e stun and you should win most of the time cause she just does so much damage especially with ignite.
Fiddlesticks
i dont want this support
Janna
does nothing for u her shield sucks shes only good if they have dive champs that she can press r on to deny.
Karma
if ur karma is good lane is free let her do the poking and u just chill and play around her slows/root to w them. if shes bad then gg LOL
Leona
super good cause she can tank and cc them for u to hit all ur abilities really easily.
Lulu
she literally is the worst enchanter with smolder like any other enchanter other than like janna is better.
Lux
can she hit her abilities.. if not then shes a really bad support. if you're against melee support and u have lux u probably just lose prior/get ran down.
Milio
his w synergizes really well with ur q and his entire kit benefits ur champ greatly. play around his w and u win.
Morgana
situational pick.
Nami
her e with mandate is super op especially once u have rfc then you can perma outrange and poke people. her w is great for your weak laning phase :D she sustain you good
Nidalee
ummm.. what does she ever do for anyone
Nautilus
he has good cc but kinda dies really easily. play around his abilities.
Neeko
if your neeko can get prio and poke them a lot lane is super easy, use ur w whenever she e's someone and you will win ur lane most of the time.
Pantheon
does a bunch of damage early game which will help you scale into late game. focus the person he stuns as long as he doesn't get poked down you can take all in fights and win.
Brand
does nothing for you especially if you're against melee supports he will just flop over.
Zyra
does nothing in lane and out of lane LOL
Zoe
zoe's e is op press all ur abilities if she hits an e.
Zilean
so bad hes so useless LOL zileans can barely land a stun. if he lands stuns then your lane is chill but if you're against melee supports then you won't be able to walk up ever cause he has no peel other than when hes level 6.
Yuumi
?????????
Vel'Koz
no peel for you, useless unless he can bully the people you're against he can't really do anything if u get all inned.
Xerath
no peel for you, useless unless he can bully the people you're against he can't really do anything if u get all inned.
Soraka
good support for u especially if she hits her q. you can walk up for free trades cause soraka will always heal u to full :3
Sona
sona smolder is an okay lane as long as you're against another enchanter. if you're against melee supports then you will get killed and shoved in all lane.
Thresh
he's squishy so it's not ideal but as long as he lands a hook you can dump ur abilities onto the person and get free stacks. try not to all in unless you know you will win.
Tahm Kench
an okay support, he's not very strong in lane the most important thing he can do for u is r you when you get doved but that's about it. he can slightly peel for you before 6 but if you get doved by like nautilus samira then he can't really do anything for you.
Swain
bad support try to play around his e. he can't peel for u ever.
Seraphine
if you're against melee supports say goodbye to ur lane because she is so useless LOL if it's against enchanters its more chill as long as she hits her e.
Senna
her only redeeming quality is that she builds black cleaver for you. if you're against melee supports and any of you get ccd then you're cooked. she can't really peel for you but her q does sustain you through lane pretty well if you take small trades.
Pyke
pykes a pretty good champ especially because he takes HOB + Ignite so your level 1-2 can be pretty good because he will do all the damage for you. so play around his hook and look for all ins on whoever he hooks.
Maokai
dies easily this is super support match up dependent. if you're against double ranged lane then you're cooked. (ex caitlyn karma) if you're against (caitlyn + nautilus) its more chill. you can play around his ccs as long as you don't get hit by anything important lane is pretty chill.
Rell
super good support for smolder because she can peel really well and does a lot of damage early too.
Rakan
rakan is a good support because he can peel for you + heal you up with his q. :3
Poppy
match up dependent.

belo im bluwunk and im a Smolder OTP :3 i hit Challenger playing mostly Smolder.
I started maining smolder in early 2025 and I became obsessed with his stacking gameplay and late game carrying capabilities. I think he's really fun and he has a lot of cool things he can do. I have a:
Discord server where you can be a part of a community and ask me questions.
Youtube channel where I upload stream highlights (and lowlights).
Follow my guide and I'll show you how to do more damage :'3
Abilities
PASSIVE
Dragon Practice
✦ Whenever Smolder hits an enemy with an ability or last hit a minion with q you will get 1 stack of Dragon Practice. These stacks improve the damage of and upgrade your abilities, so you always want to maximize getting them.
At 0 stacks it's basically a glorified auto attack and does about the same damage as one.
At 25 stacks the fireball explodes and does the same damage in a small area around its target.
At 125 stacks it splashes in a small area behind the target.
At 225 stacks it burns anyone hit for a percent of their health as true damage, as well as allowing Smolder to execute anyone below 6.5% health.
W
Achooo!
✦ Achooo! is a pretty standard ability. It's just a fireball shot in a straight line. Whenever it hits someone it does an aoe splash which can also hit another person giving Smolder multiple stacks of Dragon Practice.
E
Flap, Flap, Flap
✦ Flap, Flap, Flap is Smolder'smain movement ability which lets him fly over walls for a short period while giving him vision in the area and shooting 5 bolts at the lowest nearby enemy. Every 100 stacks of Dragon Practice adds another bolt to this attack.
R
MMOOOMMMM!
✦ MMOOOMMMM! calls down Smolder's mom. Her attack has a wide range and anyone who gets hit in the middle takes more damage and gets slowed. It also heals Smolder slightly. This is also Smolder's only ability that doesn't scale with Dragon Practice.
Builds
Smolder has a lot of build options for an ADC so it can be hard to figure out what build is best for him. Currently I think there are 2 main builds that I go depending on the enemy team comp. In this section I'll explain the builds, the small variations, and when and why I take them.
HUBRIS BUILD
The Hubris build gives you great burst potential as well as the range and mobility of Rapid Firecannon. Most champs in the game are squishy enough to be bursted down in one rotation by this game so I usually end up going with this build.
✦ Nimbus Cloak was buffed towards the end of last season and has reall good synergy with Barrier due to its low cooldown. Try to not Flash and Barrier at the same time since the movement speed wont stack.
Celerity
✦ Celerity has great synergy with all the other movement speed runes i like to take like Nimbus Cloak and the movement speed shard. It also helps you get your entire Flap, Flap, Flap damage. The other two runes in this slot, Transcendence and Absolute Focus are ok too though if you prefer them, there's not too much of a difference but I prefer Celerity.
✦ Magical Footwear is just a really good rune, giving you 300 free gold and 10 free movement speed which is very valuable.
Jack of all Trades
✦ Jack of all Trades is probably the best rune in the game if you're able to take advantage of it. When it's procced you get like 10 haste and 15 AD, which is the value of like 2 runes. With this build you'll typically proc all 10 jack stacks after you finish Rapid Firecannon and then build either Last Whisper or Vampiric Scepter.
Movement Speed is the best option right now because they buffed it and if you combine it with Celerity you move really fast.
Stat shard 3
Flat health is good if you're worried about early lane being rough
Scaling health is better in general since you want to play passive early most of the time
Core Items
Get these every game
Essence Reaver
✦ Essence Reaver is Smolder's best item now after they added Sheen back to it. Honestly it's probably getting nerfed soon if I had to guess, all the adcs that build this item look OP right now.
✦ Lord Dominik's Regards got it's giant slayer passive back (deal more dmg to champs that have bonus hp so it's a really good buy into hp stackers or even mages or supports that get like 2 items that have some HP. ALSO IF YOU'RE BEHIND you probably have to get this item 4th since once champs get to high levels like 15-18 they get a lot of base armor so you're gonna need your last whisper item to actually do dmg.
Situational Items
Replace an end game item with one of these if you think you need one
✦ Guardian Angel is good against undodgeable assassins like Rengar or Talon. Make sure you try to play forward and pressure the enemy team with this item. If you die last in a teamfight there's no point in buying this.
The Bruiser Build is going to be better at taking down tanky teams (think Sion Ornn Tahm Kench) and keeping you alive against assassins that are guaranteed to close the gap (think Zed Talon Fiddlesticks). The point of this build is to keep you alive longer with the hp stacking early, and farm as many Dragon Practice stacks as possible on fat tanks with the huge amount of Ability Haste in the build.
THIS IS THE BETTER FULL BUILD. You'll be slightly weaker in the early mid game compared to the Hubris build but your insane Ability Haste and health and attack damage late game will make you unkillable and do a billion damage.
✦ Cut Down and Coup de Grace are about the same thing but it's better to take Cut Down because you already have an execute which means the bonus damage while they're low doesn't help as much.
✦ Essence Reaver is Smolder's best item now after they added Sheen back to it. Honestly it's probably getting nerfed soon if I had to guess, all the adcs that build this item look OP right now.
Black Cleaver
✦ Black Cleaver gives you Ability Haste which is the main point of this build while also giving you Movement Speed which helps you kite, and Armor shred which will help you and your team kill tanks faster. Having more Ability Haste means spamming more abilites.
Spear of Shojin
✦ Spear of Shojin is a really good item to build against tanks because it gives you percentage damage on all your skills based on how many stacks you maintain. It's especially good with Essence Reaver because you'll be spamming a lot of abilites as both of these items give you Ability Haste
Endless Hunger
✦ Endless Hunger is the new bruiser Ability Haste item. You should end up with like 25-40 Ability Haste from this item by the end of the game. It also gives you a little bit of omnivamp which should be enough to heal up after a little random damage, and some tenacity which should help you not get CC'd to death.
End Game Items
Buy these in whatever order you want
Death's Dance
✦ Death's Dance is a good item because it gives you Ability Haste and Armor along with it's passive which helps you survive dives. Its 50 armor goes a long way with all the health you're building.
Smolder's boot choice doesn't really matter too much, just get what you think is best or default to Boots of Swiftness. But for this build keep in mind that a defensive boot will be slightly better cause you will have a lot of health.
Here's a tier list showing my initial thoughts on which build to go based on seeing each champion on the enemy team. Experiment with the builds so you can decide which one to go for yourself :D.
I'll probably make a new one of these soon but I need to play a bunch of games on the new season to get a feel on which build to go and when. PRETEND THE BLUE TIER SAYS BRUISER BUILD AND NOT ESSENCE REAVER for now.
Gameplay
Level 1
Here's what I do level 1 pretty much every game as long as im not being lazy
The ward stops you from getting cheesed level 1 which Smolder is really weak to and then standing in that spot next to tier 2 tower will safely spot anyone trying to invade thru there so your jungler wont complain at you :D
Early Game
Starting in season 16, getting back to lane is really fast due to the buffed homeguards. Because of this, I no longer take Teleport since the homeguards get you back to lane so fast anyways. If you have Barrier try to use it as often as possible in short trades since it's a low cooldown. In a hard lane where you get poked out really hard early (think Caitlyn Karma), I usually back when I'm low and buy Cull.
Level 1-3 is pretty simple, your main goal is to try and farm with Super Scorcher Breath and hit the enemy laners with achoo! as much as possible to hit 25 stacks. Before getting 25 stacks, try to not commit to long fights and focus on short trades/getting stacks because Smolder is super weak before 25 stacks. When trading level 1, do not trade without Super Scorcher Breath up. Most of the time you should have the lane shoved towards you so it's safer. After 25 stacks you can start to put a little more pressure onto the enemy team as you can now push faster and do more damage through minions with AOE. Try and look for scenarios to land Super Scorcher Breath on minions or so you can splash damage onto their ADC while they're CS'ing. You should also try to time Achooo! to hit them while they try to last hit.
Here's an example of a quick trade pattern for early game. This trade is almost always going to be in your favor if you don't eat any huge skillshots (think Kai'Sa Void Seeker) or get all-inned afterwards (like getting hit by Draven Stand Aside or Thresh Death Sentence'd).
Here's an example of good farming with Super Scorcher Breath at 25 stacks (ignore the minion minions)
Mid Game
Smolder's mid game is pretty strong as long as you don't get absolutely demolished in laning phase. After rotating to mid lane, I try to take raptors on repeat as this camp gives a lot of stacks. In fights you should be looking to splash your q onto their backlines whether it's through Super Scorcher Breath'ing the minions or objectives. Your goal mid game is just to push mid wave on repeat and rotate to fights that are happening on the map. At this point you should be able to get 4-6 Dragon Practice stacks per wave. Position yourself to Super Scorcher Breath the backline minions to hit the enemy if they are also hitting the wave that you are. Other than that, your mid game is pretty similar to every other ADC.
Here's a clip of me poking people and being annoying with Super Scorcher Breath in the mid game. Do this as much as possible to get extra stacks and poke people down.
Once you've finished your Rapid Firecannon (Ideally you have 225 at 3 items), what you should be doing is poking enemies with Super Scorcher Breath from afar to set up fights. Being able to chunk people before team fights is pivotal, as it can set your team up for success. Your goal is to do as much damage as you can while not dying, use your Flap, Flap, Flap intelligently as it can help you play aggressive without being caught. It's important that you use your Flap, Flap, Flap to fly over walls and disengage especially against champions can't follow ( Flap, Flap, Flap over a wall after Nocturne uses Paranoia on you). Try to look for opportunities to hit enemies with the center of your MMOOOMMMM!, don't just use it whenever you feel like it. A good time to use it would be when someone gets CC'd or in the middle of a team fight because not a lot of people would be paying attention to your ult because it usually isnt very highly impactful. A bad time to use it is at the beginning of a team fight to engage. Because MMOOOMMMM! is really slow, it won't hit them most of the time.
Here's what your MMOOOMMMM! can look like if you're patient with them. They're usually so much better if you wait for someone to get CC'd first.
Achooo!-
You can start Achooo! as a first ability if you're going against long ranged bot lanes that don't allow you to walk up and auto the wave. This lets you trade with them while staying a safe distance.
Also I usually start Achooo! if I see 5 people invading for free 5 stacks and better AOE damage. You should only use this ability if you know you're going to hit it, hold onto it if you don't think you can as this ability uses a lot of mana. When you don't have w, your skirmishes and trades are going to be significantly weaker.
One more thing you can do is a Achooo! + Flash combo. You can start to buffer Achooo! and then use Flash into the rest of your combo to get some quick unexpected damage on someone.
Flap, Flap, Flap -
Most people don't use this ability to deal damage and only use it as an escape tool. Flap, Flap, Flap actually does a lot more damage than you would expect it to, especially with the Hubris build. A cool thing you can do with E is if you're getting tower doved, you can fly into the wall on the bottom side and this will make it hard for the enemies to hit you. You can still get CC'd so try to do it before you get cc'd and try to dodge cc while in the wall.
Since Smolder's execute only works on damage HE applies, a cool thing you can do once you hit 225 stacks is you can use Flap, Flap, Flap to execute enemies after you apply your burn on them at low health. Flap, Flap, Flap does a lot of burst damage which can guarantee you an execute.
Here's a clip of me showing a great way to survive dives using Flap, Flap, Flap. If you've ever seen a Kayn use Shadow Step outside the map to get away, this is kind of the same idea.
Here's a clip showing what I mean with finishing off someone with Flap, Flap, Flap. It's a great way to confirm a kill once you hit 225 Dragon Practice stacks.
If you press Super Scorcher Breath or any ability while flying with Flap, Flap, Flap, it'll end the ability early. You can use this to your advantage to decide which side of a wall to land on while also using your Super Scorcher Breath or Achooo! on somebody like I did in this clip.
You can also bait out abilities by faking out flying to one side of a wall then going to another like in this clip.
MMOOOMMMM! - MMOOOMMMM! is an extremely slow moving ability. In a 1v1 try to combo it off of your Achooo! to make it easier to land the center. One cool thing you can do is you can ult backwards to make it easier to get a Center hit. It's a very situational but it can make or break your fight. Usually you should use it in a 1v1 against the other ADC to ensure that you do enough damage to kill them. This can also work against a Braum Unbreakable since it only blocks skillshots from the front.
16.1
- entire build overhaul and added a couple clips to the tips & tricks
15.21
- lifesteal on Doran's Blade removed so Jack of all Trades is a bit nerfed but it was OP enough that my builds aren't changing. You just hit the 5/10 jack stacks a bit later.
