Can be dangerous if she gets kills before 6 because afterwards, she can just dodge all your abilities. She can be dangerous if she gets fed. If you're behind, take Merc's as boots. She won't deal damage to you if you get a MR item third.
Akali
Can be tricky since you can't R her while she is invis. Her damage won't be able to kill you, but she has tons of mobility that may hurt you, since your spells will be hard to hit.
Akshan
Once again a champion that has tons of mobility and poke. Try to poke with Q and survive until jungler comes. Take red boots often.
Aurelion Sol
Should be a more annoying matchup than a hard one. Your Q out ranges his stun, I believe. If you manage to hit Q get E range, free kill. His damage isn't enough to kill you early, but be careful. If you think you will not be able to approach them, get Arcane Comet.
Anivia
Try to poke with Q and avoid getting walled in the face. If you get R and kill her, Eggnivia shouldn't be THAT big of a problem. She can outplay you in early and 6 with her W and get a kill on you, so don't give her early advantage and careful with dives.
Annie
She is a squishy champion, which means that you hit Q and E+R, and she's dead, but if she bears you in your face you might appear dead. Be careful early since she outranges you and her poke may be dangerous. Consider getting Merc's.
Azir
Look "Xerath", but he's way more annoying and can be difficult since he can R you under his tower.
Brand
If Brand stuns you, he melts you really easily. Always build mercs since he can take half a bar of your HP with burn and Liandry's. Try to hit Q and chain damage. You can avoid demonic here if you're very weak in lane and build it third (after mythic) so you may get a Force of Nature/MR item first item. You can as well get the 900g MR that grants you 50 MR.
Cassiopeia
Haven't played much vs her, but if you stay out of her poke (your Q outranges her kit) and her R, she shouldn't be a problem at all. Buy mercs if you're in trouble.
Corki
Easy matchup. You may not get easily to him because of his W, but he can't punish you much either because he sucks early, and you'll tank a lot late.
Diana
If she gets kills before 6, you've lost lane. She is very dangerous since she can close gaps when you are still w/o ultimate and defensive items, which means you have 0 defense. Don't let her dash to you! Pick Hail of Blades. After lv6, if you hit a few Qs and E-R you shouldn't have a problem. If you hate playing against Diana, maybe you can consider taking exhaust.
Ekko
Look Diana in major counters. Same for Ekko, except that he's a bit easier to beat and you NEVER need exhaust vs him. His dash and W is predictable, and you can R before he predicts his R (it's an execute!)
Fiora
Fiora tier: %max HP DMG champs. These include: FIORA, Brand if you don't have MR, Kog'Maw with lethal tempo, Varus late-game and Vayne.
Fizz
He can dash through your spells, ult you and kill you easily, get away with E... He has lane preference and he will win you no matter what pre 6. If you get ulted w/o Mercury boots and you're dead as well. Honestly, he ain't as bad in 12.23 but always get some kind of MR before your first item. After a few items he does nothing to you.
Galio
Your damage is higher than his. He can dash to you and win trades if he gets away with a taunt, but I don't think he can kill you in lane w/o the jungler. Get vision.
Heimerdinger
You can kill his turrets with Q + he's squishy and if you close gap he's dead. Not a big deal, don't get CCd by his W and get early MR if you're in trouble.
Irelia
Her dashes can help her getting out of your damage. She wins you pre-6 and probably post-6. Stay safe because if you get ulted you can be dead. Frozen Heart/Bramble Vest may be a great idea early. BOTRK = glhf.
Karthus
He has a hard time dodging your utility. Easy.
Kai'Sa
Her MS bonus with E can be tricky with your util, but her damage isnt enough to kill you pre-6 (she's weak) and late game.
Kassadin
You win early, but watch out for its dashes since she can take a big portion of your health and win trades, but it shouldn't be a really hard match. PUNISH HER pre 6 (must do) and Flash + R if she's low enough.
Katarina
Divine Sunderer gets out of meta = she's not a problem. If she gets close, x3 E with Hail of Blades. If she's far, Q.
Kayle
You win pre-6. You win post-6. If you hit Q while she's half HP and she doesn't have R, she's dead. Watch out because her ult can stop your util and R, and she can kill you if you let her stack lethal tempo lv 11-18.
LeBlanc
She dodges your util, infinitely pokes you and she will make you have a hard time. After you build boots and have some extra HP, she won't be able to kill you, but she'll be a problem especially in laning phase. Consider getting MR early.
Lissandra
She has low range and not enough damage to get you. She shouldn't be a hard matchup.
Lux
She's a more annoying matchup than a big problem. Don't be scared to try hitting your Qs and avoid getting stunned. She can't kill you in lane if you play decently. You can get a Doran's Shield if you're getting annoyed.
Neeko
She can dodge your utility, poke is annoying and if she roots + R you you might be dead. Even if she's a big problem, she's squishy and it's easy to kill her IF you hit your CC.
Malzahar
This is a scaling matchup. Just try to get his shield out often. Be careful if you waste too much mana early.
Pantheon
Check Irelia in major counters. Same things, but you always can kill him post 6. If he gets BOTRK, tho, you must get Armor Boots and Warden's Mail.
Qiyana
She can close gaps, but you won't be low if you're against a Qiyana in lane. Easy.
Rumble
A more annoying matchup than a hard one. His MS can be annoying but nah you win this.
Ryze
You can deal tons of damage to him, and he's not specially meta in 12.23. You won't see him a lot, but he's not a problem either for you. If his poke gets too annoying, get a Doran's Shield.
Sylas
Another matchup that can be hard pre-6. I recommend playing with tower before building some HP. Once you get around lv. 8 or so, you outdamage him, outhealth him and execute him!
Syndra
If you manage to hit your stuns, which won't happen usually, you're fine. She has too much range for you. Please get Arcane Comet and MR if she's a bit too annoying. Great ban imo.
Taliyah
Not a problem. Weak early, with not enough damage to kill you at any point in the game. You may have a bit of a hard time getting close because of their EW, but it's easy.
Talon
You don't win nor lose. Lv6 can be annoying but it isnt that bad because you can poke him easily.
Twisted Fate
No damage and easy Q hits. Really easy lane if you don't get gold-carded when Jungler is close.
Varus
If you get hit by R and you have no MR, you're most likely dead. He shouldn't a problem in lane if you don't let him proc his W stacks. Your CC is easy to hit against him, but late game it might be a nightmare. Remember to get MR if you're struggling.
Vel'Koz
A more annoying matchup than a hard one. Buy MR boots if you're having a hard time, and if you hit a few stuns they're dead. I recommend Arcane Comet
Veigar
You can use Q without being in his range for his cage. In any way, he's got more poke than you and can be annoying. Buy MR if you're struggling in lane and watch out for his R in lane.
Viktor
You outdamage him. He'll poke you more often than you, but once you're in range you should be able to end him. He's a late-game champ, so don't let him get an early lead. If he gets Liandry's, get MR asap. If he goes Luden's / Everfrost, keep building default.
Vladimir
Can be annoying and is hard to reach bc of Phase Rush and he can get out with his W of everything. Get anti-heal / MR. He shouldn't kill you.
Xerath
A more annoying lane than difficult one. He'll poke you a lot, but his poke isnt enough to kill you. He gets Qd and you're in range = he dies. Arcane Comet here!
Yasuo
If he gets close, he can be a nightmare. You should win lane to him, but a great Yasuo can be a problem. If you suck at fighting Yasuos, get exhaust.
Yone
He's got CC and stuff to cancel your CC. Annoying and can kill you anytime if you dont manage to hit your spells. Don't play recklessly.
Zed
Pre-6 play safe, Post-6 and some extra HP/Armor it's easy. Watch out for his poke: don't get too low.
Zoe
Outrange, early burst, CC. Watch out. SS if you don't hit CC. and get MR if you're struggling
Swain
He's dangerous, especially if you get in a long fight with him. You can struggle a bit due to his E in the early game. Shouldn't be a problem afterwards, tho, except if he ends up being massively tanky.
On the other hand, he doesnt have any mobility to dodge your CC and you outdamage him + R should be enough to finish him. Not that hard but be aware of his root/pull. Liandry's can be a problem so get MR.
Basically. Cho gets close with its Q knockup to enemies + approach velocity. This causes it to be close to enemies and proc E. 3 autos with E are devastating in an enemy. In the early game, you can leave someone less than half hp just by Q + getting close + HoB autos. It is also a decent rune late, since it makes it easier for you to lower people's healthbar.
Why Inspiration? Shouldn't you take Resolve?
You must have the Approach Velocity rune if you're playing mid lane. It helps you getting close to enemies. Remember: you search shorter trades (and 3 procs in E) in the mid lane since enemies are way more squishy.
Why Demonic first instead of an AP mythic into tank?
Demonic synergyzes well with your kit (more AP based in max HP). You don't need the AP mythics, because they will make you too squishy, and you get the damage they bring and even higher with a Demonic Embrace first. Jak'Sho and Heartsteel are as well two amazing items, compared to the AP alternatives that Cho'Gath has.
Why Jak'Sho? Isn't Heartsteel OP in the meta and better with Cho?
As I explain in the buildpath, Jak'Sho is cheaper, gives you a TON of resistances [30 + 20 Armor + MR (mythic passive), +24 Armor + MR (passive) + around 50 armor and 40 MR if you have 8 stacks] That is 174 Armor and MR (lategame) plus the max HP drain.
Compared to Heartsteel, this item might give you a bonus of 2000 HP late game plus a ton of damage, but RIP your resistances. Also, if you have no resistances and the enemies build BOTRK (oh god, what an item vs Cho), it will be more effective as you'll lack armor and you'll have more HP. It is also 200g more expensive and IMO, the buildpath is way worse.
Why shouldn't you build the default full AP build with Cho'Gath?
There's a few reasons why:
1 - You're obviously squishy, as you lack armor, MR and you'll have of course less HP
2 - As you rank up, people dodge your spells easily.
3 - It falls off late game. Champs are "faster" and have more ways to dodge your util, plus your damage won't be THAT high.
4 - Tankier builds allow you to do a ton of damage and still tank so much. It's wasting the champ's potential.
5 - It is useless against tanks and bad vs very mobile champions / assassins that can 100-1 you in a few secs.
6 - You risk having a way harder mid-game and laning phase.
