Darius - Skill matchup. If you dodge his Q's, you can certainly beat him. However, he can abuse your early game and snowball out of control of given the chance. You can actually E him from max range to deny his E and Q. Once he goes super sayin (5 stacks of hemorrhage) back off. His ultimate will deal stupid amounts of damage when in rage mode. Basically, don't let him grab you, always keep shield up, push lane and farm. You can kill him early with a gank. The downside of this lane is he builds black cleaver, tank and out damages your carries. He is also probably the best duelist in the game now. You won't deal any damage to him mid-late game
Jax
Jax - I hope you brought lube. He can just walk up to you and murder your face. Out-damages, out-pushes, out-tanks, out-sustains, out-everything you do. Super mobile and blocks your Qs. HE BLOCKS YOUR DAMAGE ENTIRELY! YAY! You might as well just E and pray he doesn't jump to you. Pre-6 you can actually stomp his ass, but after that prepare for a world of pain. Bring TP to back often and stop his broken split pushing. If he turns on his spinny staff thing/his E, run away. Last hit with E. Exhaust is also strong to stop his burst/slow his rampaging down in fights. The only chance you have in winning this lane is if your jungler camps him or he plays like a potato. If you feed, don't feel bad...
Illaoi
Illaoi - Skill matchup. Honestly if she knows the matchup she will have the upper hand. Illaoi is a unique matchup top lane that can be extremely annoying or quite easy. To trade with her, you can't fight her with 2-3 tentacles set up and or she landed her test of spirit. You need to clear the wave and keep the lane pushed or she will endlessly harass you and melt your tower. Pre6 you can abuse her hard, but post6 DO NOT DUEL HER. Her ult dueling is honestly stupidly broken because she heals and deals the most unfair amount of damage ever. Besides that, let's recap how to beat her: Dodge her test of spirit at all costs, dodge her poke, shove lane, abuse her pre6, and abuse her if she misses her test of spirit. Rushing swifties/boots are a lifesaver for this lane. She can melt teams in team fights thanks to her ult. Good luck.
Garen
Garen - He is going to cry. Negate his poke with your shielding and out sustain him hard. You can poke him down and duel him anytime. Early game his you can COMPLETELY BLOCK HIS ULTIMATE. That's not a typo. However, he can win if he sucks it up and zones you from the minion wave which Garen's rarely do. If he sits in his minion wave than he loses. However, he becomes unkillable, and has negative damage lategame.
Nasus
Nasus - One of my favorite champs to play by the way. I switched to Morde because I felt Nasus is sort of out of meta. Anyways, this lane is by no means easy. He outscales you by a long shot, and can duel kill you at level 6. You need to deny as much CS from him as possible. Start DORANS BLADE 3 POTS. Early AD on Morde makes his early Qs extremely potent. You are going to want to kill him very early before his jungler comes to rape you. If he is greedy he will take a lot of early damage from you. Start E, than Q, do not push wave, and punish him HARD whenever he comes for CS. Use the bushes to stop minion agro. Ask your jungler for level 2-3 ganks. Remember to ward and get vision of the enemy jungler! Don't try to duel him once he gets a full item unless you are EXTREMELY ahead or he has very little stacks (80-120). This is primarily because his Wither stops you from landing your Qs. Ask for level 2-3 ganks from your jungler and take his tower as early as possible. As soon as you do this, force objectives as hard as possible. I had a Kindred where we killed him, took his tower where he complimented that we would let him stack easier. Than, we took dragon, bottom lane snowballed, so we took 4 turrets, 2 drags, 2 heralds, in about 20 minutes. Force objectives and try to get a gigantic lead to force Nasus to help his team and give up stacks. You need to snowballs lanes as much as you can. If you can't force objectives and 5v4, than you lost. Rush Rylai's like normal. Max W first than Q.
Tahm Kench
Tahm Kench - Skill matchup. You need to perform quick trades and avoid his devour at all costs. Similar to Darius. Don't let him poke you with his Q. Generate shield and shove into his tower. You can destroy him in trades, and out sustain him. I take Grasp for this lane to beat him if you play your cards right. Ignite can net some early kills too. Make sure to ward deep and be very aware of the enemy jungler so you don't get stomped. Lategame he becomes unkillable like Mundo and deals stupid amounts of damage.
Yorick
Yorick - So Yorick walks into a bar... THERE ARE COUNTERS! His ghouls count as "enemies" not minions, meaning you get the FULL heal off your W. You negate his poke tremendously and out sustain him. Be careful for full out duels because he can beat you because of his low cooldowns. Enjoy those fat juicy heal. Easy lane.
Elise
Elise - I don't know why you would play her top, but she is the same as Yorick, but easier. She has no lane presence to you, and you heal off her spiderlings. 200% healing just like Yorick! The bad thing is, she can kite you for eternity.
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath - Skillmatch up. He is similar to Nasus in regards of farming. He has lots of CC and gets unbelievably tanky. If you can dodge his CC, you can destroy him in lane. Whenever he comes to farm you can smash his face in with your combo. He is going to rush a RoA because it functions great on Cho. He is going to be weak until he buys that item, so getting early jungle ganks can shut him down. If he is trying to freeze lane, shove it, and take objectives. Unfortunately, he has more sustain than you (if not anyone), and his ultimate allows him to melt objectives (1k true damage). Max W/Q, Rush Rylai's, try to kill him early to delay his RoA ASAP. Also beware of his AoE silence/teamfighting. Overall, even matchup.
Teemo
Teemo - Actual Cancer. This guy can BLOCK your Qs. He will endless harass you, make you bend over for him. So he is ranged, he can avoid ganks, kite, and block your damage. It could be worse. There is hope for this lane. Basically, for a top lane ranged opponent to win, they have space/distance themselves from you, deny farm, poke, and avoid ganks. Consistently. This is surprisingly difficult to pull off. If Teemo lets you near, he is fucked. Wait for his blind to wear off, whenever you Q him. Start Ruby Crystal 2 pots, and upgrade your E to level 3, than max W. You don't want to max E first because you can insta clear waves, which you don't want in this case. Freeze the lane and last hit with your E. Back if you need to (focus on surviving early), and rush Abyssal. If you lose this lane, you probably didn't play safe enough.
Ryze
Ryze - This guy used to be numero diez in the gifter of pain before the nerfs. He now has no dueling and can't actually kill you early. This will probably just be a farm lane. Don't stand in minion waves when he casts his E or it will hurt. Avoid ganks from his prison by ward deep. He still scales scary and can delete teams, but he will be put as a 3 as of patch 6.3. Beware his 3 item powerspike. Ryze is also incredibly difficult to play (I also main him a bit), so if you see a bad Ryze, chances are he will be almost useless. If the Ryze is any good, he might make your day hell. Overall it's a skill match up.
Dr. Mundo
Mundo - He used to be a beast, until he was nerfed repeatedly. He is very squishy early, lacks waveclear, and deals low damage. You absolutely destroy him in early duels, so feel free to bash his head in. Rush Rylais against him. Care for his ult healing, and in conjunction with Visage, as it will probably FULLY heal him! Anyways, if he did snowball somehow from wherever, rush Abyssal. Unfortunately for you, he out scales you because he becomes almost unkillable lategame. Start Ruby Crystal 2 pots and shove him into tower. Avoid ganks... If he lands his Q, you're probably dead meat. Basically, it's either a farm feast or snowball feast.
Renekton
Renekton - Ready to FEED? You better be. He is going turn you into a tuna can because he deals a stupid ass amount of damage. He will dash to you, stun, spin on you, and dash away. Boom, he just shoved you into turret, chunked half your HP, and took no damage in return. With his rage bar full, he will annihilate you. Play extremely safe. Last hit your E, and freeze lane. Rush Sunfire cape ALWAYS against this guy. Start cloth 4 pots to heal up and stay alive. Don't be afraid to back and give up farm. If he gets an early kill, you are probably going to go 0/10/0. However, if you do manage to survive, and get Sunfire cape, you can duel him with minions and squash him like a bug (if you and him are even). Still, avoid dueling him by yourself because he is an excellent duelist early-mid game. Mid-lategame you out scale him though, so that's nice.
Malphite
Malphite - Another simple lane. You negate his poke entirely by your passive, and destroy him in trades. He has horrendous mana costs early and terrible/no wave clear. Go balls to the walls level 1-3 on him. Ward deep so you don't get ganked. His teamfighting his very powerful so be alert for him. You also mainly deal magic damage so he can't be super tanky vs you early. However, there is a way he can beat you in lane, and believe me or not, it's AP Malphite. If he builds lots of AP he will be very squishy but will delete you/your team. That's a rare sight though. He lowers your AS and has a LOT of CC one he gets Iceborn so be careful.
Lee Sin
Yasuo
Yasuo - Little samurai will regret opposing you. In duels he doesn't stand a chance. Your damage reduction, healing, and DPS is too great for him early. He is too squishy and always rushes crits, which makes him even easier to kill A smart Yasuo will rush a Hexdrinker/Maw. You can bash his face in with your Qs, he can't wind wall anything (but your ult), and his ghost can be really powerful. I once got his ghost mid game, where it 3 shotted a Janna. Really the only thing you should watch out for is his teamfighting potential, and snowballing. Yes he can snowball. Overall easy lane. Max W/Q.
Shyvana
Shyvana - She can't trade or poke you at all. Early game you can murder her. Force fights whenever. She gets incredibly tanky and fast, so good luck trying to kill her later on. Beware of her ult ganks/engage. Pretty much a farm lane.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere - RIP. Probably your hardest counter. He will walk up to you and murder your face. Literally he can crit you early for HALF your HP. Prepare to be very gold deprived. Freeze the lane by giving up CS and not wave clearing. You will have to last hit with your E. Do not push lane. Use jungle creeps to sustain yourself. Bring exhaust to make plays against him/bait. Remember that his ult will make him invulnerable for 5 whole seconds. He split pushes extremely hard, so always be aware. At least his ghost is extremely powerful, so that's handy. Don't pick Morde into this lane. Good luck.
Riven
Riven - You might want to bring a fruit basket to her because she is going to get her ass teared. Why does she lose this lane so hilariously hard? She is squishy, needs to burst her targets down early, and she has no sustain. Guess what? You out sustain her, tank her damage, and burst her down! She might be mobile, but you can zone her from CS and ruin her day. Most Riven's will try to kill their lane opponent no matter what, so enjoy those free kills. I had a Jarvan stick top lane, the Riven was 0/8/0 by 10 minutes. Literally the easiest lane for Morde. However, don't be cocky and get destroyed by her jungler.
Galio
Galio - Lets face it. If you are are purely magic damage, and you face this guy, you lose. It's true, you lose. He becomes immune to all your damage if you don't snowball. You lose early game because you are slow, melee and squishy. This means he will poke you relentlessly so he can farm for free. Fortunately, he has horrendous early mana costs. Use this to your advantage! Buy boots 4 pots to help dodge and heal his harass. If he is stupid enough to let you heal, abuse that. Your all-in is still superior to his, so don't be afraid to duel him before his buys Visage or Banshees. Ward and beg for early ganks. If you are half HP and he is almost level 6, make sure to back and heal up. Rush Abyssal Scepter and Merc Treads. Basically, hope your team can deal with him, and he doesn't ult your carries. Bad matchup.
Ekko
Ekko - Obsolete. Tank Ekko is now dead, which means he is either going to be a weak tank, or an AP assassin. Rush Rylais if he goes tank, and Abyssal if he builds AP (except RoA). You'll want Merc Treads due to his CC. Start Ruby 2 pots or boots 4 pots. Liquify his kid face post3. Care for his ultimate damage, escape, and heal.
Gragas
Gragas - Easy lane. He can't poke you, his all-in sucks, pathetic early game, and you outscale him. Only problem is, he can get away from you, and has a good amount of CC. Good news is, he can't duel you, and you can shove him into turret. He will probably rush RoA, which makes him even squishier. Start Ruby 2 pots, or boots 4 pots.
Gnar
Gnar - Ugh. This guy is basically a perfect tank. Mobile, very high CC, can deal with other tanks, mixed damage, and the best of all: he is RANGED. Yup. Start cloth 4 pots, dodge his poke and freeze lane (last hit with E). Rush Rylais like normal, and avoid dueling him due to his kiting. Once you get a Giants Belt, you can trade with him and shove lane. He has low waveclear, so abuse that. You can actually duel him in Mega Gnar form once you get Rylais.
Jarvan IV
Jaravn IV - AKA J4, he actually isnt that difficult. Unfortunately, he can CC you so you cant do anything. Start cloth 4 pots.
Zac
Zac - This lane is pretty simple. It's going to be a farm feast. He gets tanky, and can avoid death via his blob passive. You out damage him at all stages of the game, and can destroy him if he ever dares to trade with you. Problem is, he is most likely to build full tank, and become immune to your damage. Ask your jungler for early ganks in hopes that you can snowball and shut him down. You must also be very careful of his play making potential thanks to his super long range gap closer and CC. Rush Rylais if he builds tank, Abyssal if he builds AP. Pick a fight with him as much as you want, but expect the enemy jungler to gank. Take objectives.
Shen
Pantheon
Mantheon - This guy can man-handle just about anyone pre6, including you. How to win lane: Start cloth 4 pots, last hit with E and freeze lane. Back if you are below 50%HP, he can burst you down easily with ignite, and might even ask his jungler to dive you early. Beware his early game and semi-global ultimate. Remember to weave an AA when his passive is up, because he can block your Qs. He loses post6 because you out damage him by miles, out tank him, and out sustain him. Rush Sunfire! Duel him anytime post6 as long as you are both even. Overall, very easy lane if you can survive pre6, and you know how to deal with his passive.
Jayce
Jayce - This lane sucks. A smart Jayce will poke you, and combo you while denying you from retaliating. If you cannot dodge his poke, your life is going to suck. Start cloth 4 pots, Rush Rylais, or Sunfire if you are struggling. Last hit with E, and dodge his poke to survive. Don't expect to ever kill him without a teammate, or he lets you sit on top of him like an idiot.
Xin Zhao
Xin Zhao - Believe it or not, this guy gets utterly melted. Why? He is squishy and has low sustain. Xin excels at charging to his enemy, and demolishing them. He is like a torpedo. You are like a giant metal wall. You lose to him at level 1, after that, feel free to mash his face into potatoes. If you did feed somehow, than rush Sunfire. Start cloth 4 pots and rush Rylais. Overall, this lane is either super fun or hell.
Greetings summoners, welcome to my Mordekaiser top lane guide. I've played pre work Morde, where he became my absolute favorite champion. In season 5 I played non-stop Nasus, and now that season 6 has come along and Mordekaiser was changed drastically, I have found him a viable top laner since patch 6.3. The meta became super stompy and much more early game oriented, so Nasus wasn't the best choice for me anymore. Than, I found Morde, who was unplayable from patches 5.16 to 6.3. I'll keep this intro short and honestly I don't really care if you read this part or not. In general (at least for me), I find that people will search and skim guides. Feel free to skip parts of the guide you feel you fully understand (warding, objectives, summoner spells, etc). Anyways, I hope you guys read and enjoy this guide!
