Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, don't leash. What to get on first back: Doran's blade When fighting lucian you basically have to fight for your life. What you have to understand when playing gangplank against these champions is that you get hard destroyed but you have to fight back, you cannot concede from level one. Every q must be on lucian, every barrel is on lucian. If lucian has e don’t even bother to try to hit him with a barrel unless you know for a fact it’ll land. Don’t place barrels when he has his abilities up since he can easily break them with his passive. Even if lucian doesn’t kill you solo, you need to be aware of the enemy jungler. Every jungler will always play for the lucian lane in this matchup. Get vision, ask your jungler to help with counter ganks. At level 6 you can’t have the wave setup in lucian’s favor otherwise he’ll just e auto and r you down. A good tip for when lucian uses ult is to run to the side. Going early tabi’s is nice and phage instead of sheen is also good. Outside of laning phase lucian just outscales you. There’s a small window for you to win. When he has two items you can look to pick him off but after that it’s just doomed. End the game asap before this happens.
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, dont leash. What to get on first back: Dorans blade Just like the lucian matchup every jungler is basically forced to play around this lane. This is by far one of gangplanks hardest counters because kalista can reposition herself every auto, making it really hard to land barrels on her. What kalista can do if you were to walk up to farm is auto a minion and stack it with her passive then auto you kill that minion with her e to reset e then just spear you down and kill you. This is a matchup that you need tabis and phage early on. What you can do is have the wave setup where kalista has to over commit to farm, so when your jungler comes you can try to land a barrel and your jungler can kill her. Outside the laning phase kalista just beats you in the split and if you were to teamfight you would be so behind in resources it’ll be dreadful. To be honest i would just dodge this matchup. It’s that bad
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Magic Resist. Starting Item: Corrupting Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, don’t leash. What to get on first back: Dorans blade Just like jayce gangplank hard wins the matchup up until ryze gets his first back. You need to get level two before ryze or else he’ll dominant the lane. Depending on what runes ryze has if he runs comet you can actually kill him at any time. Since ryze needs phase rush to gain that movement and movement speed reduction to escape from your barrels and ultimate. Try to fight for priority when the lane starts and harass ryze on cooldown. If you land a barrel always follow it up. Try to set the wave too where ryze has to over commit for farm, and once your jungler comes you can just land a barrel and ryze is good as dead. Outside of laning phase you can beat ryze if he has two items but after that he just demolishes you in the split try to group early and end as soon as possible.
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, dont leash. What to get on first back: Doran's blade You actually beat tristana level 1 and 2, hard poke her and if tristana decides to jump on top of you. Quickly place a barrel auto q and passive auto. Early tabis is good into tristana, and phage instead of sheen is good too ( if your backs are gold efficent ). Outside of the laning phase tristana loses to you until she has 3 items ( bork pd ie ). So look to fight early and end the game as soon as possible, she hard outscales you.
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, don’t leash. What to get on first back: Doran's blade ( or double dorans blade ) Gangplank wins this matchup really hard up until jayce gets his first back. This matchup does depend jayce's rune, if he has phase rush then it’s easy for gangplank since you can trade a lot. But if jayce were to go conqueror then try your best to make short trades. So to begin with you have more sustain than jayce with biscuits and corrupting potion. Everytime you interact with jayce, q him and if he uses range q then melee q, you spam a click to get passive auto and follow it with a q. Be hyper aggressive to him, spam that q button and out sustain him, if he tries to back try your best to stop him and force him to lane. Once jayce gets his first back and it’s not a vamperc septer or serrated dirk, you can continue to harass him ( but if he has these items you just lose for the time being). You start to beat jayce once you have two items depending what he has, if jayce has bork and black cleaver, you can still beat him but once he gets edge of night then he just dominates the split. Look to team fight and end the game as quick as possible.
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Bone Plating, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, dont leash. What to get on first back: Dorans blade (or double dorans blade) Gangplank hard wins pre 6, level 1-2 you can hard harass irelia then you can also look to get a dorans blade cheater recall. You just need to be very aggressive into irelia until she hits 6. Building Phase first can be good if you have odd backs, but generally going sheen first is idea. Early tabis is nice. When irelia is about to hit 6 you need to make sure your wave isnt near irelia’s tower, cause if so you WILL get zoned for xp and gold. Doesn't matter if you’re full hp, the further away you are from the tower the more time irelia has to kill you. So wave management wise you need to make sure to not mess up. After trinity force its ok to build executioners since irelia’s current build is a bunch of lifesteal items (if the meta has shifted to a different build that doesn’t involve with sustain then don’t build executioners ).Outside of laning phase irelia beats gp in the split but in teamfights you hard win.
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Bone Plating, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Armor. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, can leash. What to get on first back: Dorans blade Gangplank wins this matchup until Wukong hits 6. Everytime Wukong uses e on you, spam a click, q him then run away. When your passive is up and wukong jumps onto you, wait for him to pop his clone then pay attention to where he’ll be revealed from your passive, then q him. Try to push the wave to get a level lead against wukong so you can be more oppressive. Wukongs goal in this matchup is to literally survive until 6 since that’s his only kill pressure on gangplank. Wukong can beat gangplank even if you’re healthier than him because of him having two ults with conqueror. Outside of the laning phase you outscale him but in teamfights you have to be careful for his ultimate on multiple people. Always time his flash so you can try and force a fight ( wukong wants his flash up so he can further close the gap ).
Runes: Grasp, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth, Biscuits, Time Warp Tonic, Double Adaptive, Magic Resist. Start of lane passive auto minion for grasp, can leash. What to get on first back: Dorans blade This match up is hard for gangplank since rumble can just freely harass you and constantly slow you down. Pay attention to what rumble starts level one. If rumble starts q then auto the minions as much as possible to contest level two. When rumble has q start, his flamespitter won’t be up for 10 seconds so you can q rumble twice. If rumble were to start w then you can win the lane by just pushing. The goal here is whoever can get level two first. A good tip against rumble is whenever you q rumble and he shields the , you have a one second window to q rumble again since his w has a 6 second cooldown. Rumble basically beats gangplank laning phase up until you have 3 items. Once gangplank has 3 items you just stomp rumble. Rumble can teamfight just as well compared to gangplank so what you want to do is hold him in the split so he can’t get game winning ultimates.
Champion Build Guide
Hey guys I'm gangplank main, I'm a high elo gangplank one trick who has been playing the same champion for about 3 years and I have over 2.5 million mastery points. The point of this guide is to teach you how to play every toplane match up. What we will be discussing will be stuff like what items to buy, power spikes, what champions you beat and what champions beat you, what to do in bad match ups and much more.

As for runes you’ll be running grasp into every matchup, conqueror has gotten so many nerfs that the rune isn’t worth it anymore.
Great for Gangplank since it enhances his early game aggression by giving him more damage on Parrrley and increasing his base stats everytime he does. What makes this rune really work for Gangplank is that everytime he proc’s Grasp it is considered melee damage. So you’ll get the full affect.
Shield Bash and Font of Life is just horrible for Gangplank. So this’ll be the rune, it does help with split pushing and getting early turret plating gold.
Amazing rune for Gangplank since it helps with early sustain. You would use this rune when going against champions with spammable abilities, auto a lot, or have Damage over Time abilities. Like Teemo, Cassiopeia, or Ryze.
Another great rune for Gangplank to help prevent all in champions. This rune is best fit against Irelia, Jax, Renekton.
Horrible rune and probably the worst. You don’t build any extra armor or magic resist to help improve this rune or need the extra 10 base stats it gives. But mostly this rune is poor for Gangplank since you don’t have a rune until 10 minutes.
So basically every rune in this tree is just horrible, but overgrowth is alright since it increases your health pool by like 100-200 every game.
I would use this rune when going against matchups you can easily scale. Matchups like Maokai, Poppy, Or Shen. When running this rune you must always go Biscuit Delivery to help with mana sustain.
Must have rune for Gangplank to help with his early game mana issues. Whenever you rune inspiration you must take this rune.
Time Warp Tonic
Fantastic rune to help with early game sustain and pressure. The sudden burst of health it can provide can help with baiting the enemy or surviving from a Damage over Time affect.
Gangplank’s passive is Trial By Fire
Does 55-225 True damage ( based on level ) ( +100% AD Ratio ) over 2.5 seconds.
It’s a 15 second cooldown and what it does is every time your sword is on fire your next auto does True damage over time and gives you a sudden burst of movement speed for two seconds. This passive resets every time you break a barrel You would use this to get your grasp proc, to close gaps, to escape, or mobility
Gangplank’s q is Parrrley
Gangplank shoots his gun dealing physical damage. It applies on hit and on attack effects. If you were to last hit a minion you get extra gold and silver serpents to upgrade your ultimate. You can also generate extra gold and silver serpents if you last hit multiple minions when you q your barrel. Some of you might wonder what are silver serpents, we’ll discuss this later in the vid.
Gangplank’s w is Remove Scurvy
Gangplank consumes oranges to cleanse himself from all crowd control and heals himself. The healing is increased depending how much missing health you have. This ability is great to help sustain you through the laning phase or bait your enemies into killing you.
Gangplank’s e is Powder Keg
Gangplank can hold up to 3 barrels, they last for 25 seconds and when you detonate it on a champion it deals physical damage and ignores 40% of each enemy's armor as well as slowing them for two seconds. The barrel damage does not stack in a chain.
Gangplank’s r is Cannon Barrage
This is a global aoe magic damage ultimate that slows the enemies that are in the circle. Now for every 500 silver serpents you can choose one of these three upgrades.
Fire At Will
Fire at Will
Over the duration of the ult you can do an additional of 6 waves.
You Would buy this upgrade if your team has good lockdown for you to get those additional waves in, or against champions that are immobile.
Increases the movement speed of your allies by 30% for 2 seconds.
Would recommend going this upgrade first if your team needs the movement speed due to lack of their mobility, or helping them increase their gap closers.
Champions like master yi, reksai, hecarim and much more.
A small circle in the center of your ultimate that does true damage and slows the enemy for 60%
One of the worst upgrades to go on gangplank. The upgrade hasn’t been the same since season 7 with Thunderlord's Decree . With the removal of that mastery on season 8 the ultimate is sub par.
Best starting item for Gangplank, helps with early game sustain, gives Grasp ticks, and a magic DoT.
Good item to get if your back is around 475-600 gold. Will only go this item when going against aggressive laners or in matchups you need to be aggressive in. Examples will be like Jax, Irelia, and Fiora.
Great scaling item for matchups that just lets you free farm and you don’t have to worry about the laning phase.
Going this item sucks for Gangplank since it delays your Trinity Force or your 50% crit build by 800 gold, but it’s a must have in the current meta since a lot of champions have sustain especially when going Blade of the Ruined King.
Tabis into bruisers, heavy ad, or a lot of auto attackers on enemy team
Mercury treads into heavy ap.
The item for Gangplank, what you should rush 100% and nothing else. It enhances your Parrrley and Powder Keg by so much and gives you the best base stats that you could ask for. When building this item you would generally rush Sheen first then Phage into Stinger. But sometimes you would build Phage instead of sheen into matchups that are super oppressive like Jayce, Irelia, Camille. Sometimes it’s good to go Phage instead of sheen if your back is 750 gold and you buy Ruby Crystal and Longsword for an efficient buy.
Great second item for Gangplank, it’s a great stat stick and basically solves all of his problems.
Second or third item for Gangplank. Third if you go Essence Reaver and second if you’re planning on building Phantom Dancer third to get a faster 50% power spike in games that you think you won’t have enough time to scale. The reason you build this third instead of Essence Reaver is because you can really use crits that often at 25% ( your barrels have a ¼ chance of crtting).
You would only build this item as a 3rd or 4th. Very cheap item and you only need it for the crit and shield. Once you get this item you’re able to duel so many people.
Good second item if you’re going against a lot of assassins or bruisers.
Lord Dominik’s Regards
Build this item 4th or 5th when going against team comps that are building a lot of armor.
This item is great when going against heavy sustain team comps. Just like Lord Dominik’s Regards you would build this 4th or 5th item.
Alright item to build after infinity edge and phantom dancer if you need more crit in a super fast paced game. I don’t build this often but it’s for those niche situations.
When playing Gangplank one thing you need to know is his combos and when to use them.
One Part ( Phantom Barrel )
Known to be Gangplank’s hardest combo, but by far the best. What makes one partting very difficult is being consistent. You would use this to surprise your enemies, poke, and siege.
You can also use this combo like this.
You would use this combo to help you disengage or let's say you’re fighting someone and they’re on top of you. You can quickly one part into you, landing your barrels and quickly getting a double passive auto proc onto them.
Another combo you can do with one parting is the flash one part.
Haven’t done this combo that much but this can be used to close the distance onto your enemy to follow up with your barrel or flashing away to avoid abilities.
Bread and butter combo on Gangplank, you would use this to close a large distance between you and the enemy.
This is the flash three part and you would use this combo when chasing the enemy and you need to use your flash for a successful three part.
Melee three part is when you do a three part without using q, to do this you need to be in front of your initial barrel and your third barrel needs to be placed diagonally. I normally use this when my q is on cooldown or in very low levels.
There are other Gangplank combos but you won’t use them as often as these.
Tip #1 When eating biscuits it’s best to consume them when you have low health and mana since they regenerate 10% missing health and mana. Though the moment you consume a biscuit you instantly get 50 mana,
Tip #2 Use biscuits to bait your enemies. Let's say you don’t have any mana to cast w and you’re near death. You can bait your opponent to jump onto you to give them that false hope of a free kill. You quickly pop ur biscuit for that free 50 mana then consume your orange. This can be helpful to bait a jungle gank or summoner spells.
Tip #3 Junglers. When going against your laner you also need to understand their jungler. You need to keep a habit of enemy junglers pathing. Rek’sai is more likely to 3 camp gank top or some other lane. Jarvan IV is more likely to take a camp and look to gank a lane. These are examples but this should get you to start thinking how you want the lane to be played.
Tip #4 When using barrels to poke your laner, make sure it doesn’t hit the wave or else the wave will slow push into their tower and depending on the matchup this can be pretty bad since they can develop a freeze and zone you of xp and gold.
Tip #5 All lifeline items don't stack with each other. Phantom Dancer, Sterak’s Gage, and Maw of Malmortius don’t work with each other. You have to build only one.
Tip #6 If your first back is 900 gold it’s not bad to go double dorans blade. This is only good for aggressive matchups. You get a decent amount of early game stats that can assist you in the laning phase.
Tip #7 Let's say you’re behind as Gangplank and you need to come back from being behind. Always look for waves to catch, and always try to do raptors/krugs and last hit them with q barrel for max gold. This will give you xp for 13 and more gold for your power spikes.
Alright guys and that's it, hopefully this guide was very informative to those new and experienced at gangplank.
