Garen is since the update really aviable and I wont undervalue him.
He is very strong and can make a double kill without loosing much HP.
You should just try to farm.
Attack if the enemie is too near on your minions with your "Q" or (if there are some enemie minions with low HP) with "E".
Use your ult focused on low HP tankers or adc (etc.) to lasthit them and save kills.
If you must run away , use your Q , if the enemie has slow hit them with Q , and use the movement speed to escape. Use your "W" before fights to get some MR and Armor.
He's really easy.. and don't worry if your first match is not good.
