Introduction

Hey guys! I'm Nude Garen and this is my first guide on mobafire! I'm a Diamond Tier Udyr main on the EUNE server. You can check out my Brand new YouTube channel Here
You can check out my stream Here, that i plan to stream on soon :)

Ever since i started playing League in season 6, Udyr has been my go to champion. He was the first jungler i ever played. I started playing ranked on my account in preseason 8, where i achieved Platinum I, Fairly quick. Currently i am sitting in Platinum I Solo/Duo and Daimond V Flex. He is one of the only champions i have had a consistent positive winrate with. Out of my 80 games as Udyr this season, i have managed to maintain a 70% winrate!

Strengths and Weaknesses of Udyr

Overall, Udyr is an extremely strong Early & Late game champions. His speed, damage and tankiness combined make him a deadly threat to most champions. Let's start by looking at his strengths.

Strengths
  • Great clear. Building Tiamat Improves his clear speed even more!
  • Incredible early game damage, and dueling power! Makes it easy to invade the enemy jungle early. You can 1v1 almost any champ with no problems.
  • Very high mobility!. Once your Blazing Stampede is maxed you can pretty much outrun any champion in the game! You can spam Bear Stance and Iron Mantle For increased speed and sheilding. By doing this your Bridge Between will also get fully stacked.
  • Great objective control!. Thanks to your spammable abilities and early game damage, you will be able to solo Drake from Level 3. Later in the game you can also Take Rift Heral very quick. When ahead, you can almost solo Baron. Usually one support or ADC is enough to 2 man it!
  • Decent CC with stun. Your stun works in a different way than most champions. When you hit an enemy with Blazing Stampede you stun the target and apllies a depuff, that makes them invulnerable to the stun for a few seconds. In teamfights this can be very usefull since you will be able to stun their entire team very quick. Its also a good way to shot down priority targets.
  • One of the best splitpushers late game! Thanks to the damage from Sheen and the attack speed from Wilding Claw and Bridge Between you will melt towers within seconds!

Udyr indeed has a lot of strengths, but no champions come without weaknesses. And Udyr specefically have one major downside: Crowd Control.

Weaknesses
  • Easily kited by champions with high mobility & CC. This is the main reason why Udyr never really is considered Meta in higher elo's. Udyr is a champion that relies on face to face combat, using his massive claws to tear people apart, but because of this, he can be locked down and kited fairly easy. Stuns, slows, knockups, fears, binds, silences, etc. can easily make Udyr pretty much useless in teamfights. This is one of the reasons Mercury's Treads is almost always bought due the Tenacity it provides.
  • Very mana hungry in early stages of the game. All of udyrs abilities cost mana. And to maximise your potential as Udyr, it requires you to spam through your abilities. Building Tiamat first item instead of Stalker's Blade also makes you lose the extra mana regen from Stalker's Blade. This is why personally like to build Hunter's Potion since it makes you generate a lot of mana by clearing camps. This also means you will have healthier and better ganks!
  • Weak when behind. Not all games can be perfect. Sometimes the enemy team just plays better and you will quickly find yourself being quite weak. At this point you will find yourself struggeling to make succsesful ganks. The reason for this is you will be quite squishy, and with no damage to back that up, laners can often turn on you and kill you.

Items

In this section i will go over every item that i find viable on Udyr. I will talk about how the items synergise with Udyr, and the up-down sides. To begin with, i want to say that every item has a specific moment, in which they shine. Some are just overall better than others. Lets get started!

Jungle Items

Stalker's Blade is the best option for Udyr in almost every game. This items replaces your smite with Chilling Smite. Chilling Smite can be cast on enemy champions, dealing 28 - 166 (based on level) true damage and stealing 20% of their movement speed for 2 seconds. This is where the item shines. Udyr is required to get in melee range to do damage, and with this item, it allows you to catch up to fleeing enemies and stun them much more easily. The instant true damage is also very good for finishing off low hp targets.

Skirmisher's Sabre is also a decent option for Udyr. This item replaces your smite with Challenging Smite.Challenging Smite can be cast on enemy champions, revealing them for 4 seconds, reducing their damage against you by 20% and making them take 60 - 162 (based on level) true damage over 3 seconds from your basic attacks for the duration. This makes you a lot stronger in duels. The reason it is not built that often is because it doesn't give you the gap close that Stalker's Blade gives. You will therefore get kited much more easily, and the extra single target damage won't matter.

Enchantment: Warrior is currently the most viable choice for Udyr. It provides 60 Attack Damage and 10% Cooldown Reduction. Since Wilding Claw scales with up to 180% AD it means you will be able to pump out so much damage in a short amount of time. When ahead you can instakill carries without them even getting a chance to react. This cannot be achived with any other jungle item.

Enchantment: Bloodrazor is another viable option for Udyr. It provides 50% Attack Speed and an unique passive: your basic attacks will deal 4% of the targets maximum Health as bonus physical damage. Buying this item allows you to deal quite a bit more damage to high health tanks compared to Enchantment: Warrior On the Other hand, you won't be able to lock down and instakill the enemy carries. You also lose some split pushing power since the max % Health damage dont affect towers.

Enchantment: Cinderhulk is the third viable option for Udyr. It provides 300 Health and 15% increased bonus Health. It also provides the unique passive, Immolate: While in combat, deal 12-29 (based on level) magic damage a second to nearby enemies. This passive deals 300% damage against monsters. This is a viable option if your team comp needs a tank . By buying this you sacrifice a lot of damage but get a lot of sturdiness in return. If you buy this you need to change your gameplan since you won't be able to deal crazy damage . Instead you should peel for your carries and focus on stunning enemies with Blazing Stampede.

Hunter's Potion is a really great item for udyr in my opinion. If you start with Refillable Potion it will only cost you 250 gold to upgrade. As you often will be building Tiamat before Stalker's Blade, you will quickly run out of mana. This is where Hunter's Potion shines! Its a consumable that restores 60 health and 35 mana over 8 seconds. It stores 5 charges that refill upon visiting the shop. Furthermore, killing a large monster grants one charge. This allows you to clear your whole jungle and come out with full health and mana. You will thereby also be safer against invades, and allow you to counter jungle or soloing an early drake. In later stages of the game you will also be able to sell the item for gold. And you will actually have earned money by not having to back for mana and health, allowing you to farm and gank more. The benefits just keep coming! I really reccomend it.

Offensive Items

Trinity Force is a very strong item on Udyr. The item provides a lot of overall stats which Udyr benefits a lot from. One of the best parts is the Sheen passive, which makes your next attack, after using an ability, deal 200% of your base Attack Damage. Over the course of a fight you will proc this consistently, since you will be switching through your stances all the time. This also helps you taking objectives and towers a lot. The item also provides 5% increased Movement Speed, and of course, the Phage passive. This makes your basic attacks grant 20 Movement Speed for 2 seconds. Furthermore, if you kill the target you will gain 60 instead. This synergies very well with Udyr because he relies on Basic Attacking face to face. The extra MS really helps you catch up, or flee from your opponents. The only downside to this item is the price. At 3733 gold, Trinity Force is one of the most expensive items in the game. If you are ahead, the cost should bot be a problem. But when behind, it will be very hard to complete the item in time. If it takes you too long, you will end up being very squishy in the mid game, where you need to be a little tanky. Elsewise everyone will be able to instantly kill you in fights. Overall Trinity Force is still one of the best items and should be bought almost every game.

Black Cleaver is another solid item on udyr. It provides a decent amount of damage and sturdiness at the same time. The Black Cleaver also has the Phage passive, which is really good on Udyr. But since its an unique passive, it will not result in multiple applications of the item. You can't benefit from the passive twice. This means that buying Trinity Force together with The Black Cleaver, will not be a good option. Also it will take away some the the sturdiness in the mid game where it is very important. Because of this you will have to make a choice to buy one of them, but never both at the same time.

Guinsoo's Rageblade Is a quite strong item overall. It provides Attack Speed, Ability Power ad Attack Damage. All three stats benefit Udyr. The AP will scale with your Iron Mantle, providing better shields and healing. It also scales with your Wingborne Storm, this is not important though since you wont be using the ability in this build.

Jungle Pathing

Since Udyr has such an amazing early game, you have a lot of different choices. Genuinely you should be looking to get a leash from your botlane.

When you are on blue side you start: Red - Wolves - Blue.
On the red side you start: Blue - Wolves - Red. After clearing the 3 camps you should be level 3. At this point you can do 2 things. The first choice is to look for a ganking opportunity. If either of their lanes are pushed, you should go for the gank. Note that when taking this jungle path you will always end in the middle of top and midlane. If a gank isn't possible, you should be looking to do rift scuttler, and then a full clear. Rift scuttler is quite an important objective since it provides a lot of vision that prevents ganks and roams.

Udyr is so strong early game so you can easily solo your buff. This is sometimes smart to do if you are looking to invade early. The enemy team will have no idea where you started. If you decide you want to invade his red buff, start Blue - Enemy Red. Make sure to always know where the enemy jungler starts so you know if the buff are up or not. If the enemy jungler is weak early you can choose to hide in the bush afetr stealing his buff.
