Introduction

I average about 50% with in ranked. However I started playing before I truly understood him. LoL Wiki displays a play style difficulty so low, you would assume a trained monkey could do it. Make no mistake, is as difficult as they come. Interestingly enough, he can also be adapted to fill any role.

Strength & Weakness

Regardless of your build, is a glass cannon. Your objective is to poke from beyond enemy range, and use your as a deterrent from the enemy getting too close. There are certain champions, either with extreme range or extreme gap closers that you should not even play if you are going to face them mid:

Naturally there are champions that a skilled will excel against. And by "Excel" I mean he can out-push and cut the opponents CS by forcing them to retreat to the tower. (Its pretty rare that you see beating opponents over the head via wrench.);

I've found you can out-poke him in most cases. Trading a Hextech Micro-Rockets for a Null Sphere here and there is usually worth it with your Techmaturgical Repair Bots. He is certainly a champion you don't want to let free farm, so keep the lane pushed and let him split CS with the tower.

Strategy

The concept is similar for both solo lane and team fighting. If you are looking for a "nuke-your-face-off" AP, then this champion isn't for you. Heimerdinger in a team fight excels in holding position just outside of enemy turret range, allowing your AD carry to knock it down and sustaining your team with Techmaturgical Repair Bots in drawn out fights. serves a dual purpose of deterring the opponents from starting a fight, and keeps minion waves pushed. Make sure your team knows this. Charging in for a tower dive usually results in your death, where an enemy team charging into your has severe consequences for them.

Hold CH1 Concussion Grenage for defensive purposes, it will save you from most gank attempts. NEVER throw it at max range when they can dodge it.
