Introduction

In my opinion, Udyr is one of the best junglers in the game. Not only does he have an amazing damage output, he is one of the tankiest junglers out there. Udyr has one of the fastest, if not THE fastest, jungle clear time out there. With the pheonix stance he can shred any camp that he comes to in a matter of seconds. Follwing this guide you should soon be dominating the jungle.

Masteries

The Mastery choice is simple. I do 21 in defense just to make Udyr that much more beefy in fights and in the jungle. It makes him more durable and able to take more damage for his team. Then comes the choice between offence or utility. You can go either way, it just depends on what you want. Utility provides faster movement speed, longer buffs, and some nice mana. While offence provides more damage (obviously) making the jungle route faster.

Runes

I use these runes for a few simple reasons.

The attack speed marks allow for more damage, which in turn allows for faster creep killing and champ slaying. These work great with Pheonix stance udyr because every third attack, Udyr engulfs enemies in front of him in flame dealing bonus (magic) damage.

The armor seals make it so you can make it through the jungle with no problem. Without some armor to start with, jungling can be quite tricky and get very close to dying, since you wont be buying cloth armor, you will need some extra armor to keep you alive and in the jungle ready for ganks (A good jungler shouldnt have to go back after every buff).

The Magic Resist Per level allows for more of a tanky style of gameplay late game while still dealing large amounds of damage. Why dont I use flat magic resist you might ask? Well, you don't need magic resist during the jungle, so really you only need it for team fights which happen later in the game when you are a higher level. Per level runes provide more magic resist over time then flat runes.

And finally, The attack speed quints are for faster creep killing and more damage. With Udyr's bear stance he gains more movement speed when activated, and is already a pretty fast champion so I don't feel the need for Movement speed quints, but Movement speed quints are still a good choice if you would rather use those.

Summoner Spells

I use these spells for a couple reasons. Smite is pretty obvious, most junglers use it. Although with the newer jungle, you dont actually need it, it makes things much easier, faster, and allows for earlier dragons, and better dragon/baron/buff steals.

I prefer to use flash over ghost because Udyr's bear stance is pretty much the same thing as a ghost. Flash also allows for better escapes (in my opinion) and a nice gap reducer when chasing someone down. If you prefer Ghost, It is still a valid spell to use on him because it will help out his ganks and chasing down the last few people in team fights.

Abilities

Monkey's Agility(Passive)
Entering a stance grants Udyr 10% for 5 seconds. This effect can stack.

This passive is great for 1v1 fights, tower killing, even baron/dragon. Basically, when you are playing Udyr, you will want to be switching stances constantly when in a fight. After 3 switches, your passive will be maxed granting 30% bonus attack speed! That is enough to help shred your enemy.

Tiger Stance (Q)
Activation: On his next attack, Udyr swipes at his target, dealing normal attack and dealing 150% of his attack damage + 30 / 80 / 130 / 180 / 230 extra damage over 2 seconds as magic damage. In addition, It increases attack speed by 15/20/25/30/35% for 5 seconds.

Persistent Effect: Udyr's attack speed is increased by 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40%. Half of this is persistent, the other half is activated for 5 seconds.

Cooldown 6 seconds
Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana

This stance you dont need to focus on until late game when playing Phoenix Udyr. This skill tends to be better for solo top Udyr, but that isn't what this guide is about. It is still a very powerful skill that should be used when you get the ability for it.

Turtle Stance (W)
Activation: Udyr gains a temporary shield that absorbs 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+50% of ability power) damage.

Persistent Effect: Udyr's attacks cannot crit, but he restores 10/12/14/16/18% of his damage as health and 5/6/7/8/9% of his damage as mana.

Cooldown 6 seconds
Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana

This ability is great for that extra sustain in fights and in the jungle. Another good thing about jungle Udyr is he doesnt really need blue since with turtle stance some of his mana is restored each hit. The shield also allows udyr to be more durable making jungling and tanking easier.

Bear Stance (E)
Activation: Udyr gains 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 / 27% increased movement speed for 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 seconds.

Persistent Effect: Udyr mauls his target with such force that they are stunned for 1 second. This effect cannot occur on the same target for 6 seconds.

Cooldown 6 seconds
Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana

The bear stance is Udyr's main ganking ability. Why? its simple, when you are waiting in a bush for the enemy to get a little over extended, you push your e and gain a massive speed boost allowing you to surprise your enemy and stun him giving time for your teammate to catch up. Also, most times in ganks, you will be able to stun the opponent one more time before they escape, locking in the kill. This is also a very good skill to help you get out of dangerous situations. I only get 1 point in this early on because you mainly want it for the stun.

Phoenix Stance (R)
Activation: Udyr sends out pulsing waves of fire dealing 15/25/35/45/55 (+25% of ability power) magic damage each second to nearby enemies for 5 seconds. In addition, Udyr's ability power is increased by 16 / 24 / 32 / 40 / 48 and his attack damage is increased by half of that amount.

Persistent Effect: Every third attack, Udyr engulfs enemies in front of him in flame, dealing 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+25% of ability power) magic damage.

Cooldown 6 seconds
Cost 55/50/45/40/35 mana

Phoenix Udyr in my opinion is the best way to play him. This ability deals large amounts of damage not only to one person but also has an AOE effect to it allowing you to shred camps, and team fights. This ability works great with attack speed dealing that extra damage every third hit.

Items

Lets go over the items and find out why I buy what I do.

Boots and pots start on a jungler? thats strange. Because of the runes I use and the pure beast that Udyr is, there is no need for any more armor. Also, a lot of junglers build into a wriggles. Udyr shreds camps fast enough as is, and should always have enough money to buy a ward when he goes back. Having boots of start also allows for an easy gank at level 4 before you go back.

Next up is the Recurve Bow or the Null Magic, depending on how much you have when you go B. These items are both great early game items. The recurve bow allows for more damage due to Phoenix stance, making jungling faster and ganks better. The Null Magic allows for more sustain on ganks. Try to get the Recurve Bow if you can.

Wits end will be your main damage item throughout the game. Its passive absolutely shreds people along with phoenix stance. It is great for team fights and 1v1s because of the increased magic resist on hit.

Depending on the team comp, these are the boots you should get. If you are playing a team comp with a lot of auto attackers or even a team that is heavy AD, get the Ninja Tabi. BUT, a lot of the time, it is more magic damage then physical, a lot of teams also have a lot of CC meaning merc treads are a great option as well.

Depending on the team comp once again, if its more physical damage, get the Chain Vest first. If its more magic damage, get the Negatron Cloak. Get one right after the other though. These items add some nice tankiness for fights which should be starting around the time when you get these items. These will also be built into items a little bit later.

This is a great item not only for yourself but for your whole team. A lot of times, your support will get this item, so ask them if they are buying it before you go and get it. If they are getting it, just move on to the next item.

Guardian Angel is an amazing item. It give a good amount of armor and some magic resist. Udyr already takes a while to die, try adding a second life.

Force of Nature is my favorite magic resist item. It works extremely well with Udyr for the movement speed bonus, so nobody can escape.

For the last item, you have many choices.

Zeke's Herald
This item is one I recommend highly. It gives a nice buff for your ad carry, and gives you more sustain and more damage because of the attack speed bonus.

If your team needs more beef less damage, get this item. Its active is great for team fights, and its armor bonus is amazing.

If your team needs more damage, this is always a great item. Any attack speed items are a good choice for Phoenix Udyr.

Jungling

Wolves --> Blue (Smite) --> Wraiths --> Golems --> Red (Smite) --> Wraiths

First, grab your boots and head to wolves. You will want to send someone over to red to make sure that they dont take it, tell the rest of your team to protect blue. When wolves spawn, activate Phoenix stance and start attacking the main wolf, when the ability is up again, use it. Immediately after all the wolves are dead, head over to blue.

Udyr doesnt need a leash, but it helps. So tell your mid to leash blue for you. Once he hits it, activate Phoenix stance and start killing the blue golem. Keep spamming R every time it is up. Smite blue to finish it off. Once blue is dead, proceed to kill the smaller minions, then get a point in turtle stance, and head over to wraiths.

Once at wraiths, stand in the middle of them all, and activate Phoenix stance. You want to stand in the middle so you hit them all on your activation. Wait until the cooldown is at about 2 seconds and then go into turtle stance. This switch is what you will be using throughout the whole jungle. Once all of the wraiths are dead, head over to golems.

You can use a health potion on your way over to golems if you need to. Once at golems, use the same strategy, Activate R, wait until the cd is about 2 seconds, then activate W. When both of them are done, pop a potion if needed and head over to red.

Same thing goes for red, start off with phoenix stance then switch to turtle. Smite it when it is low enough. The smaller minions should be dead from the AOE of Phoenix stance. Head over to wraiths.

When you get to wraiths, you will have to wait a few seconds for them to spawn, but they spawn before you would be able to get to wolves, so the few seconds are worth the wait. Once they spawn, proceed to use the combo. You should be level 4 now, which means you can gank.

You have 3 options from here.
1) Go kill wolves.
2) Go for a gank.
3) Go back and buy.

Proceed to kill the camps and gank often.

Ganking

Ganking is a skill that you need to master if you are going to jungle. I dont care how well you can kill creeps, if you cant gank, dont jungle.

You should start ganking at level 4 when you get Bear stance. You will mainly want to look for ganks at Top and Mid, but dont forget about bot, they need the occasional gank as well. Before you gank a lane, look at their positioning, If they are pushed too far, Ask the lane you are ganking if the buses are warded. if they are, chances are you wont get a successful gank, if not, head over to the river bushes or the tri bush.

Wait for the right time to go, watch the movement of the enemy, if he goes for your teammate, or pushes too far, press E, run in and stun him, then proceed to hit him with R. Dont get baited! A lot of lanes will bait the bushes if they dont have wards.

If your gank is unsuccessful, head back to the jungle and keep an eye out for new ganks.

Counter Jungling

A great thing about Udyr is that he is an amazing 1v1 champ. Counter jungling is very easy for him. If you notice that a jungler is ganking one of your lanes, feel free to head into his jungle and take a buff or take some of his creeps. You can keep their blue and red warded so you know when you can go in and steal it. If you notice that their jungler is getting a buff, head over to it, wait in the bush, then beat him to the smite. After you do that, look at his health, if he is low, you can run in and fight him. But most of the time its a better choice to get out of there as fast as you can. One thing to be careful of is their team all closing in on you because you failed to kill the enemy jungler instead of just running away.

Team Fights

Team fights can make or break a game. With Udyr, your job is simple. Run into the battle and focus the carry. Now, I dont mean just charge in without your team. Make sure all of them are with you, then run in and stun their ad carry or their ap carry, whatever one is dealing more damage, when you do that, all focus will most likely turn towards you. So make sure you are using all your abilities, and using your W as much as possible (the shield really helps).

Warding/Ward Hunting

If you are ever at the store, and have some extra money, buy a few wards. Warding is key to winning games. If the other team is warding pretty well, get an oracle's elixir and head through the river looking for wards. Taking out wards in the bushes and at dragon/baron gives your team a huge advantage by allowing for easier and better ganking.
