Sona, The Maven Of The Strings

"Shall we resolve this dissonance?"

Introduction

This guide will not hold your hand, you can figure out how to play Sona by yourself (she's one of the easiest to play IMHO). This guide simply presents the items/masteries/runes/etc. that I use when I play Support Sona.

Change Log

2/17/2011: Added the items that I use; fixed a typo listing Spirit Visage twice in the Items section under the vs. both area
2/3/2011: Changed to flat Mana regen Seals due to nerf to the scaling ones and the buff to all champions' Mana regen
2/2/2011: Build published

Runes

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration for extra Magic Penetration. Even though this build is support, the extra little magic penetration from these marks can be the difference of your team getting the kill(s) or not.
Greater Seal of Replenishment for extra Mana regen
Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power for extra AP, the core item build doesn't have all that much AP, and you want all you can get.
Greater Quintessence of Experience for extra amounts of experience. the faster you get to levels 6+, the faster you can start guaranteeing the kills for your team.

Items

Core Items

Ionian Boots of Lucidity, Archangel's Staff, and Soul Shroud are your main items. They are give you all you need in every game: CRD, Health, Mana, Mana Regen, and AP.

What else to get:

The rest of your build really depends on the game. Are all of you enemies AD? All AP? Half and half? Total failure?

If they are all AD you will want some items that give armor and/or health along with other stats you want.
For example:
If the entire team is AP, then you will want some items with Health and/or Magic Resistance along with the other stats you want.
For example:
  • Banshee's Veil Incredibly helpful, esp. the passive to actually block a spell
  • Lich Bane Mana, AP, MR, movement speed, and an increase to your damage by quite a bit. What more could you really want from 1 item?
  • Spirit Visage Some extra CDR, which will get you over cap, extra health, a decent amount of magic resistance, and you increase the amount of healing you do to yourself.
  • Chalice of Harmony You want this esp. if you do not have all the mana regen runes and talents, it keeps you filled with mana along with voiding off the evil magics of your enemies.
  • Abyssal Mask AP+a lot of Magic Resistance+reducing the Magic Resistance of nearby enemy champions = total pwnage of glass cannons like Ryze.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter Lots of health, AP, and it also gives and extremely helpful slow on your attack spells
  • Rod of Ages Only downside is that it takes 10 minutes to get the full benefit from it
  • Shurelya's Battlesong Fairly handy active, it also builds from the Philosopher's Stone you got right away

If the team is about half and half, then you are going to want some of both, feel free to pick your favorites, I tend to not even have most games last this long to find out what I would end up going with.
  • Zhonya's Hourglass The active is also incredibly helpful
  • Frozen Heart You will want to use different boots as well because you go over CDR cap
  • Rod of Ages Only downside is that it takes 10 minutes to get the full benefit from it
  • Shurelya's BattlesongFairly handy active, it also builds from the Philosopher's Stone you got right away
  • Spirit Visage It also increases the healing that you do to yourself
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter Lots of health, AP, and it also gives and extremely helpful slow on your attack spells
  • Banshee's Veil Incredibly helpful, esp. the passive to actually block a spell
  • Lich Bane Mana, AP, MR, movement speed, and an increase to your damage by quite a bit. What more could you really want from 1 item?
  • Chalice of Harmony You want this esp. if you do not have all the mana regen runes and talents, it keeps you filled with mana along with voiding off the evil magics of your enemies.
  • Abyssal Mask AP+a lot of Magic Resistance+reducing the Magic Resistance of nearby enemy champions = total pwnage of glass cannons like Ryze.

If the enemy team is just failing and you could literally roll your face on the keyboard and still be pwning them, then you can get whatever f***ing items you want to get. Go ahead and get Atma's Impaler!

The Items I use

VS. AD

VS. AP

*I get Banshee's if the enemy team is high in CC so that I can keep for getting stun/snare/etc. locked to death.

Summoner Spells

Teleport and Clarity is what I always use, if you end up knowing you are going to lane with someone that doesn't use mana and you tend to not use mana all that much you should take the point out of Insight in your masteries and instead put it into Blink of an Eye and take Flash instead.
Spells to never take:
  • Exhaust A nice spell, but not for Sona, you don't need to slow them, and your lane partner is probably taking this anyway.
  • Cleanse Once again, a nice spell, but you really don't need it. If you die, it's gonna be because of multiple stuns and it being like a 3v1 or something to that effect. Still doesn't make up for taking this spell.
  • Fortify A nice spell, but you really aren't going to be saved all that much by it or end up saving your towers all that much either.
  • Ghost You want another movement speed increasing spell with a much larger cool down!?!?!
  • Heal You want another healing spell with a much larger cool down?!?!?!?
  • Ignite Your lane partner is probably gonna take this, and besides, you want to save your team mates, not slaughter your enemies by lighting them on fire.
  • Rally Why??? The beacon can be killed in, like, 2 hits late game, and doesn't provide that much of a bonus to your team mates anyway.
  • Revive Planning on dying is a bad idea, plain and simple.
  • Smite A jungling Sona????

If you payed close attention you noticed that I've mentioned every single Summoner Spell excpet for Clairvoyance. Well, this is really a nice spell and I use it occasionally, it helps prevent ganks, let's you check on monster camps throughout the game, and can help you to figure out which way the person with 13 HP ran through the woods. If you want to take this, same deal as Flash take the mastery for it and take it in place of Clarity.

Summary

This is how I play Support Sona, and I tend to do really good in most games. (Generally around 5/2/20 or so on average)
