ignite or exhaust are both good. ignite for fb/aggro, exhaust for defensive/vs assasins
no matter if you are ad or ap you have to spam q as much as you can for the gold income since you are not taking any cs. Keep poking them low enough to burst them (ap) by landing your e w q thunderlod's and ignite to secure a kill or (ad) e aa q aa ignite aa. Don't forget to move with the target as you wait for your auto attack to come back up.
