I think he's just too bad to do anything useful as an ADC now... he was nerfed to the ground :/

I'm also curious about mid Zilean. I haven't seen the pro games where he's been used. Is he a team comp centric pick or can he be played well in solo queue in normal situations? Is there something about the new preseason masteries that makes him comparatively stronger than he was before the new season? Although I've always been intrigued by him, I've always dismissed him (at least in the support role), because anyone with a shield or heal can negate the harassment damage from his bombs. Is there something about the current mid meta picks that's making it more sensible to pick Zilean?

I've played a pretty decent of Zilean albeit support and on twisted treeline. I will say this, I think zilean just reaches this critical mass point where he becomes extremely difficult to play against if he is played well. His ultimate is about a 31 second cooldown with 45% cdr.The 99% movement speed buff or debuff enables or disabled a lot of champions and double bomb can be extremely effective in turning the tides of a fight. His bombs have amazing base damage and fantastic scaling. I'm sure someone else here can give you a better response since he seems more appropriate in the mid lane than at support right now, but I think he's actually really strong and possibly hidden OP
