No, you simply can't look at it like that especially not if you rely on the synergy your cards have.
Loads of situations where i've Engi'ed for some spellpower to combo with Fan of knives for a full-board clear and gotten it along with another card from the knive draw.
Also, a turn 2 engineer is much better against both rogue and mage.
I'm not saying engineer is better i'm just saying they're equally viable and i like having 1 of each in my deck as opposed to 2 of either.

There's no special pattern because it's really class specific: mages often have 5 7+drops, where rogues rarely have more than 1-2 if any.

Huh? Wtf are you on about? O.o
The Engie doesn't give any spell damage. It's a 1/2 unit that ONLY draws a card. I.e: it's a bad unit, but one that you get for free.

Now you're just being silly.

Roughly the same effect would be achieved with just a spell damage unit instead of the card draw unit.
Sure you have a larger chance of getting that spell damage unit with a card draw unit, but there's a larger chance you won't have the mana to play said spell damage unit, so the net result is pretty much +/- 0.

You know what the best card you could pick to pull off a spell damage+fan of knives combo would be?

Another Kobold.


You can also add two Dalaran Mages. They work great with Rogues. I use them in my build. Kobolds and Mages allow you to use that combo at 5 and 6 mana, which is far more useful than being able to do it at 7-8 mana. And when you do reach 7-8mana you can do an even bigger combo with a Kobold and a Mage/another Kobold for 3 damage to all enemies.
No matter how you look at it such combos get better with more spell power units rather than with more card draw units.

we're discussing the effectiveness of loot hoarder v. novice engineer.

The reason i have engineer>another kobold is the versatility that engineer has>another kobold since 1 engineer+1 kobold is a stronger hand than kobold+kobold cuz no spells..

The reason i have a hoarder is because hoarder trades better against everything but pala, rogue and mage. Even if it's draw isn't as powerful as that of the engineer.

Most of the time i'd rather have 2 different cards than 2 of the same if both synergise equally well with the rest of my cards(doesn't apply to arena, in arena i just go for the card that trades better.)

Playing a Warrior deck vs a Mage, get rushed down to 1 health after he starts with a Mana Wyrm combined with 2x Mirror Image and some more spells/minions early on, finally manage to recover board control because the mage lets all his minions attack me and doesn't care about clearing mine, kill everything he's throwing at me while using my hero power to prevent dying to him, I come back from a 1-30 score to 1-6 with 4 minions on the board vs his one (a Gurubashi Berserker), he uses Frost Nova to stop me from killing him and although I have a silence in my hand the strongest minion I can unfreeze using that has 5 attack, leading to me losing with him left on 1 health.

@Meihye: only taunt card you'll ever need in constructed is Defender of Argus, others are just unnecessary (excluding legendaries like hogger).
Taunt cards appear to be better than they really are, most are mediocre, while Defender of Argus is very strong.

@discussion about novice engineer and loot hoarder:
Novice engineer is definitely better, they both suck stat wise and have their role established as cheap card draw. Loot hoarder is prone to silence, and even if he isn't silenced, you draw card earlies on your opponents turn, making that card advantage non impactful and with delayed effect. While novice gives immediate advantage + you get board presence.
In late game, novice is infinitelly times better than hoarder, just because of her immmediate card draw.
This is just my observation from playing/watching game for few months.

Yeah, I figured that she would be far better in lategame, but early the Loot Hoarder is better, right? As in, a turn two or turn one drop that is.
My personal flavor of Rogue might have colored my thoughts in this instance. My Rogue is 100% early to mid game, if the game isn't over by lategame I'm ****ed. Only one or two units over 5 cost.
