[11.23] Menace To LoL Ryze

By King Turtle
Build Introduction
I had an idea for a build when 11.23 first came to the pbe but never had the chance to actually test anything due to other projects, having to work more because of the upcoming holiday season, and just general forgetfullness. Now that I've gotten through my other guides and have some more free time coming up, I can start this guide. I don't play ryze at all, but so far have found some consistent success with this build and feel that it's as good as I'm going to get it for now, so here it is, Menace To League Of Legends Ryze!
Pros And Cons
Great Utility: Ryze already has some ok utility with his W, but now that you can pair it with Glacial Augment it becomes a point and click wonderland of slows and roots. In teamfights it's incredibly useful and early trades are easier to disengage from.

Good Kiting: Ryze kites extremely well and with glacial it's even easier to keep your distance and land full combos before they get the chance to close the gap on you. This is especially true for early trades.

Early Farming: One issue Ryze has is early CSing because he has low auto damage and comboing waves can really destroy your mana until you can get tear stacked a decent amount. People who are used to csing with low auto champions like Ryze and Lissandra won't suffer as much, but people who aren't used to it may struggle to farm efficiently.
Runes

Main Rune Page - Super Slows

  • Glacial Augment is an amazing keystone on ryze now with its recent rework. You can Q+W an enemy and they spend so long in root+the slow beams that you can easily get another 2 full combos before they're out. In Teamfights it's even more effective as you can do this to an entire team with the right root placement.

  • Perfect Timing is just a free stopwatch. There isn't anything else to really say about it.

  • Biscuits will help with early sustain and will make early trades more worth it.

  • Cosmic Insight will get your summoner spells up and ready as much as possible as well as any item cooldowns you have.

  • Manaflow band adds some permanent mana to help scale into Ryze's abilities.
  • Transendence
Transendence adds some ability haste at levels 5 and 8, then refunds cooldowns on Q, E, and W for every takedown at level 11+.

Alternative Rune Page 1 - Roam Heavy

  • Predator is a good keystone with its recent buff, and ryze has some decent cc plus a Teleport built into his kit that teamates can use, so why not make him a turbo roaming beast who can bring the jungler along for a solid 4v2 bot lane.

  • Cheap Shot works well for Ryze as you can E+W and then get bonus damage on full combo for the next 4 seconds.

  • Eyeball is just for the bonus permanent AP gain going into mid and late game.

  • Ultimate Hunter will be good to lower your Ult cooldown as much as possible so you can gank and set your team up in skirmishes to win with good positioning and dividing powers.

  • Manaflow band adds some permanent mana to help scale into Ryze's abilities.

  • Waterwalking will be good for roaming so if you come across enemies in the river or you're doing a quick dragon and need to fight people off, you get a little more power.

Alternative Rune Page 2 - All Speed

  • This is the standard Keystone for ryze, and for good reason. It pairs with his move speed gain on combos, and makes it easy to catch up to or run away from an enemy. It's easy to trigger and is a fun keystone to use.

  • Manaflow band adds some permanent mana to help scale into Ryze's abilities.

  • Celerity will benefit your movement speed and make you even faster whenever you get your speed boosts.

  • Waterwalking will be good for roaming so if you come across enemies in the river or you're doing a quick dragon and need to fight people off, you get a little more power.

  • It's just faster boots to make you even faster in general. It also makes it so you can just focus on getting your core items.

  • Approach Velocity makes you go faster towards enemies that are CCd so you can get around the map and get to important fights and objectives sooner.
Luden's Tempest

Luden's Tempest is a great mythic on Ryze as it allows him to get plenty of mana, AP, and the passive adds some damage. You also get some ability haste and your mythic passive grants you magic pen per legendary for some extra late game power against the beefier champions.
Sorcerer's Shoes

Sorc shoes add some more pen and help you scale into mid game until you get Seraph's Embrace full stacked and start rolling people into late game.
Seraph's Embrace

Seraph's Embrace is the item that Archangel's Staff turns into once you get tear fully stacked, and our main mana source to fit into Ryze's passive to further scale his abilities. Generally, you'll want to get it stacked as soon as possible, but as long as you aren't inting and you're actually keeping up on gold you should be fine.
Void Staff

Void Staff is our main penetration item to deal with bruisers and tanks, as well as adding some extra power into our mid game so we can secure a lead and faceroll late game. It's also an incredibly cheap item for it's purpose and intentions so we aren't spending 20k just for full build.
Horizon Focus

Horizon Focus got its AP reduced a bit in exchange for the passive working on slows now, but even so, I think since our root is easy to put on someone and it opens up options for our team, that it's still a viable item on him. It'll add some needed damage and make it so this build is just as effective on squishies as it is on bruisers and tanks.
Shadowflame

Shadowflame is a new item released in 11.23 that essentially serves as an AP serpents fang, with a reverse Lord Dominik's Regards passive that adds magic penetration gain when an enemy has less health. So a champion at 1000 health gets hit with more penetration than a champion at 2000 health. It's useful for squishies as it ignores Flat Magic Resist and will give us an advantage against both types of champions.
Alternative Item - Fimbulwinter

Fimbulwinter is the new mana item from 11.23 for mana hungry tanks and Ryze. It's a nice spin on the mana items and finally gives a tear item for everyone whether they're a tank, AD, or AP champion. For Ryze it's a fun alternative to Seraph's and makes him surprisingly hard to kill in the right matchup. The only thing you really lack with this item is some damage and AP, but I feel that the amount of health you gain from this item makes it a worthy purchase as an alternative item.
Situational Items

Zhonya's Hourglass is going to be a good situational item against High AD comps and comps that have insane cc chains. It still gives AP and depending on your Rune Page it'll be a cheaper purchase as the Glacial rune page already has a free stopwatch.

Banshee's Veil is a good situational item into heavy ap comps and teams with heavy cc chains or even just one shot potential, as the spell shield on Banshee's will make it easier to avoid getting destroyed within half a second.

Frozen Heart will be a situational item for when you're going into a heavy AD comp or a comp with multiple auto attack based champions(Gwen, Tryndamere, Jinx, etc...) and gives mana without needing a tear, meaning it can pair with one of the 2 mana items to add some power into your abilities. It would pair nicely with Fimbulwinter if you feel like going more Tank than Damage.
Early Game
For Early Game you just want to focus on farming and stacking tear as fast as possible. this doesn't mean go hyper aggressive and drain your mana pool in the first 2 minutes. Use your abilities wisely and find the best balance to get ahead in gold and level without sacrificing resources too often. If you can get a lead here Mid Game should be a breeze. For glacial and Phase Rush rune pages, you'll be in lane most of the time, but dont be afraid to branch off to help do dragon or secure a skirmish. For the Predator Rune Page, Farm like normal until level 6, then start scouting the other lanes and find a good lane to gank, communicate with your jungler so they know to get in your R for ganks and if the enemy team is pushed up or unaware of your plan you should be able to rip off a few kills to get you and your team ahead.
Mid Game
Mid Game will be the time to assess your lane situation for gold, CS, and level to decide if you want to play aggressive or stay under tower and farm until your team starts moving around for objectives and teamfights. For the Predator Build you can either help your jungle get objectives around the map or you can continue roaming to help your other Laners. Just remember to try and catch back up on lost farm when you get the opportunity.
Late Game
Late Game is essentially just going to be about winning teamfights and making objectives as uncomfortable for the enemy team as possible. Get used to the enemies patterns and their positioning so you can place your Rs properly and get the advantage in a teamfight. A well placed R can mean the difference between winning and losing a teamfight and allow you to do other tricks like backdooring and getting to objectives faster to contest and force the enemy team off. By now you'll be full build as well so you don't have to worry too much about draining your mana anymore, meaning you can go full balls to the wall and get 1 step away from destroying your QWER keys.
Build Conclusion
This build was based off a few ideas I saw in the pbe before 11.23 and one game where I went against a ryze mid with 1st item Fimbulwinter and got absolutely clapped. I think this build is a great path for ryze and has been quite the trip to learn and adapt to so many matchups with Glacial and Predator. I hope you enjoy this build as much as I do, GLHF!
