12.20 Morgana Support by #1 Morgana

By iSkyi
About Me
I am constantly improving and updating this guide!!!

I make content on TikTok and YouTube.
I stream at Twitch.

I'm Sky. I've played League since the end of Season 4, which was when I first picked up Morgana. I'm a Master support player.
Runes
Notes about Keystones: For this current patch, comet has come back to the scene as the dominant Morgana rune. Glacial has it's moments where it is the better choice, but even in those games you will do just fine with comet. Guardian is an option but it isn't one I would take happily (I never do).

Primary:

Secondary:

Arcane Comet allows for Morgana to deal some damage without having to land her Dark Binding, synergizing with Scorch to gain some pressure in lane. This is especially helpful in higher ranks where landing your Q is so unreliable.

Manaflow Band is a helpful rune for W poke in lane, but taking Nullifying Orb is fantastic against high magic damage teams. I pretty much always take it against magic damage carries (Seraphine/Swain/etc).
Transcendence allows casting more often (especially E). Simple choice.
Scorch helps give you some extra poke and kill pressure.

Perfect Timing is a necessity on this champion. She will always buy Zhonya's Hourglass and the early active allows for some game deciding plays.
Biscuit Delivery is very helpful for trading in lane.
General Tips
  • The default keybind for self-cast is Alt+(Ability). Practice self-casting Black Shield with Alt-E, it's very important.
  • Remember that Black Shield is not a spell shield. It's an Anti-CC/Magic Damage shield. It does nothing against Ezreal Q.
  • Morgana has abnormally high attack damage early, but low range. Treat her like an ADC inbetween abilities and auto-attack throughout fights (you can stop late game). This also means auto weaving is vital, AA-Q/W-AA-R-AA as an example.
  • You know how Tryndamere players will try to wait to use Undying Rage until they are right about to die? You can think of your Flash- Soul Shackles- Zhonya's Hourglass combo in a similar way. You want to stick with your targets longer to keep the pressure up and make the stun more likely to land. An obvious exception is if you are using the stasis to negate an important ability ( Fizz Chum the Waters / Veigar Primordial Burst).
  • Sometimes, not using Dark Binding is more valuable than using it. This is most common when chasing someone. They'll fixate on having to dodge instead of moving optimally to gain distance.
  • Morgana's passive, Soul Siphon, heals off all ability damage to large minions, large monsters, and champions. I Q/W cannon minions in lane all the time to get some HP back when my mana is high. Just be careful not to ruin a lane freeze/bounce and avoid stealing the cannon.
  • Any damage that triggers Soul Siphon will lower the cooldown of Tormented Shadow. You can output more damage by using Tormented Shadow prior to the CC that will hold them on top of it.
Laning Phase
  • Always be in your opponent's head. With Morgana you have to be closer than your max range of Dark Binding and know where your opponent will go to dodge in order to land it. It's the 2nd slowest skill-shot in the game.
  • You have to think about your ADC's abilities. Jhin's Deadly Flourish, Jinx's Zap!, Caitlyn's 90 Caliber Net, Aphelios' Binding Eclipse, and Miss Fortune's Make it Rain all have very high synergy with Morgana's Dark Binding. They are easier to land than Dark Binding, increasing your chances.
  • A rarely known trick: You're below level 6 and you just landed a bind, imagine drawing a line between the target and you, then from you to your ADC. If you just drew a right angle or larger, most of the time the best next action is to back off. If it's smaller, you're likely able to go in. Remember to consider obvious exceptions like the where-abouts of junglers and the match-up.
  • A reliable level 6+ combo to guarantee kills when ahead: If you have Soul Shackles available, look for windows to walk up and use it on people out of position. Hug their model closely (so long as you are safe to do so). Most champions will be unable to flash and escape the range. Only champions who can combine flash and dash will excape. Hestitate 1 second after the Soul Shackles stun, then use Dark Binding to layer your CC.
Mid/Late Tips
Always attempt to predict the pathing of your opponents. You want to get to dragon/baron early to remove vision in the river/entrances and to ward the paths they will have to take to approach. This is Morgana's greatest strength. The pressure that she might be waiting to Q someone will cause them to hesitate or give up on contesting if they're behind. If they don't, then you WILL be there ready to do just that.

Otherwise you have 2 modes in teamfights:
  1. Look for a Dark Binding to help start off a fight in your favor and play back ready to Black Shield either your engage or a carry who is being dove. Transition into using R for either peel or helping the engage.
  2. The classic Flash- Soul Shackles- Zhonya's Hourglass that I mentioned in the General Tips.
Zhonya's and Mythics
Zhonya's Hourglass: Core. There are plays that this champion can only make after this item has been purchased, and I believe these plays are so vital to winning games as Morgana support that the item is necessary every game. Right now, I believe buying Zhonya's first is optimal if you are not snowballing into a Liandry's Torment purchase.

Liandry's Torment: This item is expensive and means your powerspikes come later. This item is popular on Morgana for a good reason. Lately the choice has been more about what order to buy this mythic + Zhonya's, but I will keep this guide updated as they release the new mythics into season 13.

Shurelya's Battlesong: A great utility support item. An AoE burst of movespeed is just far too versatile in this meta. Disengage, engage, dodge an ability, contest the baron/dragon, respond to a flank, avoid a gank, do it all with this item. It is good.

Imperial Mandate: Mandate is an undertuned item right now. It's weak. If you want a budget Liandry's it's fine, but it is a shadow of its former glory. Morgana also finds it difficult to proc the passive for mandate as frequently as other users of the item.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Everfrost section of this guide has been updated as of patch 12.19, so you should re-read it if you are a frequent user of this guide!

Everfrost: I have been going this item a lot more lately. If used skillfully, this item's active can be game changing. It is fantastic against bruisers, assassins, and tanks to help peel them off of carries.
Boots
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: These boots are strong in this meta and Morgana does great with the ability haste. Simple as that. It is her best option in most games. If you have chosen to max E second (instead of W), you will also be taking these boots 95% of the time.

Sorcerer's Shoes: Fine option for smurfing and snowballing. Try to only go these if the rest of your choices synergize with a high damage build. Example: Liandry's + Comet instead of Shurelya's + Glacial.

Boots of Swiftness: A nice option to give you some roam/rotation power along with synergizing well with your ultimate. It is rare that they outperform Lucidity.

Mercury's Treads: Buying anti-cc on a champion with an anti-cc shield is pretty redundant, but of course there are situations where the enemy team is just an exceptionally high magic dmg / CC comp where these become a great option.

Plated Steelcaps: Buy these if they have 4+ auto-attack champions or 3+ with few Kraken slayers.

Mobility Boots: Morgana is extremely unreliable for roams. If you want to try to make these work you better know what you're doing as a support. All champions roam/rotate, but you don't need these boots to do it.
Non-Core Items
Chemtech Putrifier: Build this if they have some healing and you want Ability Haste (grievous wounds has been significantly weaker the last few patches).
OR
Morellonomicon: Build this if they have team-wide healing (grievous wounds has been significantly weaker the last few patches).

Demonic Embrace: If you have filled all your item requirements for the game and have one item slot left, this is a good option. This is also a fine option earlier if you have no need for grievous wounds and you are getting fed.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter: It's rare that we will be building this, but there are times where slowing someone with W is the only way to keep them in check. At the very least, keep it considered.

Banshee's Veil: Only reasonable source of MR, but Zhonya's Hourglass is usually enough burst prevention to where this is unecessary. Use your better judgement, it's rare this is optimal, but it is an option.

Frozen Heart: If you are against 3+ auto-attack based champions then a combo of Plated Steelcaps+ Zhonya's Hourglass+ Frozen Heart will invalidate their team. Frozen Heart is about to be nerfed so I will update the guide accordingly.
