A five minute guide to Master Yi

By 0kruemlmonster
LISTEN UP
This is a five minute guide to Master Yi. I want everyone to be able to read this really quickly if you just picked him up and need to understand his kit as fast as possible. I wont explain every single rune and summoner spell, no, I just want to explain how to play him in five minutes. Master Yi can be described as a melee-ADC-assassin.
Abilities

MAX ORDER:

Q > E > W

PASSIVE: Double Strike
Cooldown: --- - Mana Cost: ---
Each fourth basic attack, Master Yi attacks twice, the second strike dealing 50% of his current AD as physical damage. This strike applies on hit effects and can only critical strike on turrets.

You build Guinsoo's Rageblade for this ability. With a stacked Guinsioo's, you can threeshot everyone because of this, because you Double Strike each second basic attack.

Q: Alpha Strike
Cooldown: 18-14 seconds - Cost: 50-70 Mana
On cast, Master Yi gets untargetable, dealing 25-165 (100% AD) physical to up to four enemies hit within a 600 radius. After the cast, Master Yi appears in front of his targeted enemy, or if the target dies during Alpha Strikes cast, he reappears on the cast location. Alpha Strike can critically strike for 60% ( +15%) bonus physical damage and its cooldown is reduced by one second each time Master Yi basic attacks.

This ability can be used for gapclosing, dodging abilitiesand surviving a dive (Q the minions so you get out of turret range as they will continue walking/you will lose turret agro if you have ally minions under the turret).

W: Meditate
Cooldown: 28 seconds - Mana Cost: 50 Mana
Master Yi channels up to four seconds, healing himself by 15 - 55 (12.5% AP) + 0 -100% based on his missing health every 0.5 seconds. While meditating, Master Yi reduces all incoming damage by 60 - 70% (halved against turrets), pauses Wuju Style's and Highlander's duration and grants one stack of Double Strike per second. After the channel ends, Master Yi reduces incoming damage for another 0.25 seconds by 40 - 30% (70 - 65% against turrets). Meditate can be used as an auto attack reset.

Sustain in the first jungle clear, an auto attack reset, sustain when you almost die in a 2v2 situation ... useful ability.

E: Wuju Style
Cooldown: 18 - 14 seconds - Mana Cost: ---
On activation, Master Yi's auto attacks deal 18 - 50 (35% bonus AD) bonus true damage for five seconds.

This ability is the reason you kill tanks as fast as squishies.

ULTIMATE: Highlander
Cooldown: 85 seconds - Mana Cost: 100 Mana
Passively, Master Yi's abilities cooldowns get reduced by 70% on champion takedowns. When activated, Master Yi is immune to all slows and cripples, gains 25 - 65% bonus attack speed and 25 - 55% bonus movement speed. While active, champion takedowns extend Highlander's duration by seven seconds.

In a teamfight: KILL SOMEBODY or get an assist on somebody so you get a reset on Highlander.
Strengths/Weaknesses

STRENGTHS
+ 1v9 potential
+ Easy to play
+ Can dodge CC and skillshots
+ Enemies are afraid of you in general
+ Strong splitpusher
+ Deals tons of true damage
+ Can easily 1v3 (with Guinsoo's) if played right
+ Takes objectives like drakes and baron very fast
+ Can solo baron
WEAKNESSES
- Needs to farm a lot
- Very selfish champion
- No CC
- People will flame you (no ganks i.e.)
- Really squishy
- Weak to CC
- Pretty useless without his ultimate
- Needs somebody to engage in a teamfight
- Get's focused in teamfights
Tips and Tricks
Master Yi doesn't really have combos, as his mostly comes from his auto attacks, but there are a few things that are good to know.

Don't waste your Q. Depending on the enemy champion, you always want to dodge an ability like a Yasuo Q, Jax E, Ekko W or whatever. Don't waste it at ganks either. If you can't kill an enemy with Q AA, you just want to walk up to him, wait for him to use his escape tool/CC and then use Q so he can't get away.

Your W is an AA reset. Most of the time it isn't worth it to use it in your jungle clear as it is very useful in 1v1 situations.

Never forget that you are a really powerful champion when you have a stacked Guinsoo's Rageblade. This items gives you this huge 1v2 potential.

Early, Mid and Late Game

EARLY GAME

Master Yi's early game actually isn't weak at all. He can easily outduel a Lee Sin if played right. The point is just that Yi can't take any risks as he needs items to be useful later on, which means farming, farming, farming. Only gank lanes that you are sure you are going to get a kill and get lvl 6 asap. Do not waste time and never take too big risks.

MID GAME

If you got your Enchantment: Bloodrazor and Guinsoo's Rageblade right now, you are a very strong champion. Just never forget that you need to stack that Guinsoo's, otherwise it's useless. If you are splitpushing and an enemy tries to stop you, stack Guinsoo's and just dive him (unless it's a champion like Jax, Tryndamere or Rammus that counters you in general or Leona that has too much CC for you and you don't have these Mercs yet).

LATE GAME

Late game, your main focus should be on teamfighting and destroying that nexus. If your team wins a 4v5 without you, go splitpush. You can secure drakes and barons really fast, but make sure the enemy doesn't know when you secure baron. If they catch you this baron is probably theirs.
Teamfighting
Their is basically one big thing that you may NEVER forget: You aren't an engage champion! Let your team engage and usually somebody should be back there in your backline. Stack your Guinsoo's on him fast and then get into the enemy backline. Don't waste your Q, use it to dodge CC or gapclose after an enemy flash or dash. Just make sure to KILL SOMEBODY FAST, or your Highlander's duration will go down and Yi needs his ultimate to teamfight.
Summoner Spells
Of course you always want to take Smite in the jungle. I mean, it's kinda obvious, isn't it?
Flash gives you a gapcloser and an escape tool. I guess everyone knows why Flash is so powerful and useful as it is, I just want to say why you don't HAVE TO bring it: Yi doesn't really need a gapcloser or an escape tool as he's already pretty mobile (high base movement speed and Highlander) and, if you're good, it shouldn't happen too often that you get caught AND can't handle that situation.
Teleport gives you immense map pressure, helps at securing objectives, defending turrets and splitpushing. The problem about it is that it doesn't help you in a 1v1 and it has really high cooldown. Some people like it, some don't, just try it.
Thanks!
