Ryze is a high burst, high sustain, fast moving tank that peaks in the mid-late game stage which makes him one of the strongest top laners. His abilities scale off of both AP and mana.

Ryze has the ability to crush his lane opponent while farming for his late game and also has multiple build paths.

In this guide I'll attempt to show you the best way to play Ryze as well as how to improve yourself as a player.

Pros

Cons

-Shut down by ganks
-You will be hated
-Your power will eventually fall off
-Relatively short range

Situational Items:
Zhonyas - Buy this when against a Zed/Syndra
WOTA - Buy this for prolonged team fights/survivability
DFG - Ryze does a surprising amount of burst damage, when you have this item combo in this order: Q R E Q W Q
Banshees - Buy this when facing heavy initiation from a Malphite/Leona etc.

Should I go AP or AD?
Both builds work effectively, however the AP build comes with more survivability from Ryze's spell vamp and the Seraphs large shield. If you're playing seriously then the AP build will work better for you.

Also note: Ice Born Gauntlet gives you 100 more mana than Frozen Heart.

Cast your abilities in this order:
Q - R - Q - W - Q - E - Q
Or if you need to get out damage as fast as possible:
R - Q - W - E – Q

Before you get your tear I would advise that you use your auto attacks to farm unless you are under your tower and need to use your abilities to last hit.
Other than that farming as Ryze is extremely easy.

This is the big thing you want to look at, how to actually win the game, and this goes for every champion, not just Ryze.

Every game of league ends with the same result, the destruction of a Nexus. But how do you achieve this result?
The destruction of a Nexus begins with the destruction of Towers, but I'm not going to tell you to go straight for the enemies Towers, you need to be strong enough and you need to have vision on the map.
You want to destroy the enemy towers in this order:
Top Tier one > Mid tier one > Bot tier one > Bot tier 2 > Mid Tier 2 > Top tier 2 (The order will vary depending on which lanes lose/win)
In-between this you need to get dragons with your team, this will help you stay in the game.

For your wards to be most effective you need to place them at Baron, Dragon and the enemy buffs, and if your team is currently losing, Place wards at all entrances to your jungle and at your buffs.

As a mid laner it is easier for you to roam to both bot and top, you can also farm wraiths quickly post 6.

Remember to use your teleport to help the team!

Make sure you know how to play Ryze properly before you go into ranked.
Ryze in ranked play is seen often in both solo queue and ranked 5's and for a good reason, he is an asset to the team.
This is amplified by the frequent use of teleport that Ryze players trend.

But why is Ryze so useful?
He's a fast moving tank that can dish out damage and turn prolonged team fights in your favor.

Ryze mains are both hated and feared, a bit like Teemo mains.
Ward before attempting to take a tower.
Use your teleport to help the team take objectives.
Don't drag on the game for too long because you will eventually fall off.
Don't die early game.
