Introduction

Hi everyone, I'm Timmly, and this is my Vel'Koz Guide. I play League since preseason 2 with breakes. My highest elo was rank 50 Challenger on EUNE. I was #1 Vel'Koz and #1 Xerath on Lolskill and Leagueofgraphs for 5 months. I finally decided to share my knowledge about League and this champion to help you climb up!

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ High Kill Potential
+ High Range
+ Good Pu(ni)sher and Farmer
+ Satisfaction when you find the Q angle
+ Teamfight Carry
+ Low Cooldown
Cons

- Squishy
- Immobile
- A lot of counters
- At current meta it scales too slow
- Vulnerable, when you miss Tectonic Disruption
- No escapes

Vel'Koz is one of the champions with highest skill range in the game. It's really fun to play especially when you find the crazy Plasma Fission ANGLE! As an Eye of The Void you focus on pushing your enemy and poke him as much as you can. You are in danger when you miss your Plasma Fission and Tectonic Disruption, because you have nothing to defend yourself. Just wait with agression till it comes back up. Keep your distance and use your range as an advantage, don't come too close to your enemy! If someone is trying to charge you use your Plasma Fission to slow him and run to safety.

Spells

Passive
Organic Deconstruction is the most important skill in your skillset. If you are able to detonate the stacks correctly you will gain extra damage. At three stacks it explodes dealing true damage.

Plasma Fission
Plasma Fission is the best skill to harass your enemies with crazy ANGLES that you can find during your journey on Vel'Koz. Use it before you land your Tectonic Disruption to slow your enemies so it's harder to avoid.
IMPORTANT You can reactivate it to split it faster.

Void Rift
Void Rift is the only spell that gives 2 stacks of Organic Deconstruction. It's really crucial for your combo. Use it to clear minion waves and gain control on mid lane by pushing it.

Tectonic Disruption
Tectonic Disruption is your skillshot to immobilize enemy champion. It's suspending enemies for 0.75 sec. When you land it correctly use your Void Rift and Plasma Fission to activate your passive Organic Deconstruction. If enemy is behind minions use only Void Rift. Check brueshes with it! Tectonic Disruption gives you vision!

Life Form Disintegration Ray
Life Form Disintegration Ray is your ultimate. It's really powerful with at least one stack of
Organic Deconstruction don't use it without stacks if you don't have to.
After deconstrunting your targets you will deal TRUE DAMAGE from your ultimate!

Playable Ability Sequences

Summoner Spells

Flash is the best summoner spell in game. Why do you even consider using anything else?!

Take Barrier against agressive midlaners with Ignite like Fizz Ahri LeBlanc Zed Yasuo.

Heal is better than Barrier on 2v2 teamfights with your jungler to gain extra advantage.
Use Heal if you know that enemy midlaner is going to play without Ignite like Galio or Kassadin with Teleport.

I personally use Cleanse often, when I play against Evelynn Rammus in enemy jungle or Veigar Zoe Ahri on midlane.

DON'T EVEN TRY TO PICK IT IF YOU WANT TO BE A FRIEND WITH ME.

Runes

Sorcery and Inspiration is the most valuable runes on Vel'Koz. Arcane Comet and Scorch let's you to bully your enemy on lane with your Plasma Fission and get some extra damage.

Manaflow Band is really helpful rune, because you don't need to rush Luden's Tempest especially when you are playing against Zed or Yasuo. You gain that extra mana from your rune instead of your item. It's also good when you are playing against AP midlaners, becase you can use your skills more often.

Since Vel'Koz is high range poke midlaner Transcendence is best option. As a Vel'Koz you relay on your low cooldowns and with that rune you can use your Ultimate on lvl 16 even every 45s! It's also good to outpush waves with Void Rift and to torture your enemies with Plasma Fission.

Magical Footwear is an excellent rune on Vel'Koz, because it's not neccesary to buy boots in early game due to high base movement speed.
Cosmic Insight have a perfect synergy with Transcendence. You can also use your Summoner Spells on
Vel'Koz more often which is crucial.

Farming

If you are reading chapter by chapter and reached this point you know that Vel'Koz have great skillset to push his lane. Watch these videos to see how to farm. In some cases you max
Plasma Fission and in other Void Rift. Let me show you how to farm properly.

If you max Void Rift it's the easiest way to push your lane.

Pushing with W

If you max Plasma Fission you push minions like you can see on gif, also you can gain extra mana for killing 3 minions with your Q keep that in mind! Don't go that far on to enemy side, if enemy midlaner is close or you have no clue where enemy jungler is!

Pushing with Q in early stages

The other way to push your lane when you max Plasma Fission, is to use Void Rift and then Tectonic Disruption on caster minions to clear the whole wave.

Pushing with Q+W+E

You push like this, when you didn't recall for the first buy. You have to autoattack caster minions, because they are going to survive with 1% of hp.

Pushing with Q+W+E+Auto Attack

Matchups

While playing as Vel'Koz on lane you have to keep your distance. Every champion with abilites that enables them to shorten distance to you are your counters. They are called gap-closers.

Vel'Koz counters:

The biggest Vel'Koz weakness is that every skill is a skillshot. Yasuo is very mobile champion and can get close to you very easily. If you try to defend yourself he will cast
Wind Wall to deny all of your abilites. He can also dodge a lot of your skills with his
Sweeping Blade. Try to keep the distance and wait for the gank from your jungler. You can build Ninja Tabi and take Exhaust to deny his engages. Also you can build
Zhonya's Hourglass on 1st item, but you will need some mana. In this scenario Dark Seal is the best option. IMPORTANT! Your ultimate goes through Wind Wall!

Yasuo Windwall

Vel'Koz Ultimate

Zed is pretty strong against Vel'Koz because he is gap closer. He can cut the distance easily with his Living Shadow and then use his Death Mark. Second thing that he can easily escape from your Life Form Disintegration Ray with his Living Shadow. Be careful of his combo on lane Living Shadow + Razor Shuriken + Shadow Slash + Electrocute. Don't come too close, try to last hit from safe distance. Same like for Yasuo you can build Ninja Tabi and Zhonya's Hourglass. When his Living Shadow is on cooldown use that opportunity to attack him.

Zed Combo

Kassadin is one of the strongest counters. All you can to do in this matchup is push him really hard and deny his farm till level 6. Then you have to keep distance, because he can come close to you pretty easily with Riftwalk. Save your mana in early, don't throw your Plasma Fission stupidly, because if Kassadin started Corrupting Potion he will outsustain you because of his passive Void Stone.
Try to use your Life Form Disintegration Ray when his Riftwalk is on cooldown, because he can easily escape with it. Just find the gap!

Akali is pretty strong assassin against Vel'Koz.
She can make you use all of your skills, by dashing into you and then avoid it by using Twilight Shroud. Also she can escape from you using Shuriken Flip. She gets pretty strong when she hit level 6 and finish Hextech Gunblade, so she gets extra damage and slow. Be careful when you come back from roaming! She can wait in bush and combo you!

Fizz is pretty strong, because of his Urchin Strike and Playful / Trickster. He can dodge your combo and escape from your Life Form Disintegration Ray with Playful / Trickster.

Be careful of his combo Urchin Strike to minion and then Chum the Waters into you. It makes it pretty undodgable. Just Flash before you get the Fish! If you don't, even if you use your Barrier you are probably dead :(.

Zhonya's Hourglass is good defensive item against Fizz keep that in mind.

Fizz Combo Q+R

Vladimir is pretty strong because of his sustain on lane and his really strong defensive skill Sanguine Pool. Be careful when you cast your combo and your ultimate! He can easily escape with Sanguine Pool or engage into you, because you used everything to kill him!

Always build Morellonomicon as soon as possible against Vladimir to reduce his heal!

I would build it right after Luden's Tempest is finished.

Vladimir Pool

Talon is like Zed and Yasuo. You have to be really careful on lane, because he can easily combo you on level 6. He can escape from your Life Form Disintegration Ray with his Assassin's Path or Shadow Assault. Good Talon will probably roam to other lanes. I would try to max Void Rift so he will lose farm, when he fails on ganking other lanes. Ninja Tabi and Zhonya's Hourglass is a good choice.
Be careful on the river! He can easily jump to you through the wall with his parkour Assassin's Path! You have to be really safe, when you want to help your teammates!

LeBlanc can short the distance with Distortion and deal a HUGE amount of damage with her Sigil of Malice and Mimic. When she dashes into you try to fight back when her Distortion is on cooldown.

She can easily escape from your Life Form Disintegration Ray with her W and R so be aware of that before using it recklessly!

Don't try to chase her with your Flash when you know her Mimic is not on cooldown, because when she comes back to lane she can easily kill you!

Katarina put you in a real danger when you use your Tectonic Disruption badly. Then she can easily come close with Shunpo and cast Death Lotus. So without Flash as Vel'Koz you are probably dead.

Be extra careful, when she finishes her Hextech Gunblade, cause she can Shunpo to her Dagger, slow you and finish without a doubt!

To take her out you will need a jungler with strong CC like Sejuani or Rammus etc. So you can easily CC-CHAIN her with your Tectonic Disruption and finish with other skills.

Ahri is not a big counter against Vel'Koz, but you will struggle against her. It's hard to kill her, because she can escape from Life Form Disintegration Ray just like that with Spirit Rush. She can combo you when she hits her Charm and get close to you with Ultimate, also when she fails, she can easily escape, because she have 3 stacks on it. Try to kill her, when her Spirit Rush is on cd, but be careful! Her Charm stops your Ultimate!
I often take Cleanse against her. It's good because you can get out from Charm and Ignite. Most of Ahri players take that summoner spell.

All you have to know about Zoe is you can Cleanse her Sleepy Trouble Bubble, before you fall asleep!
NOTE! You can Cleanse yourself during Life Form Disintegration Ray cast time!
Try to use your Tectonic Disruption on the place, when she is going to come back after using Portal Jump then you can try to kill her!

Try to poke Diana as much as you can before she hits level 6. Good Diana player plays with Teleport so watch your mana boy! Don't get touched by her Crescent Strike, because if you do, she can use her Lunar Rush twice! If she gets close you are probably dead. Just wait till Crescent Strike effect is gone before you come closer.

NOTE! Be careful with your Ultimate! She can dash with Lunar Rush and interrupt it with Moonfall. USE IT WISELY!

Ekko has a pretty strong defensive and offensive kit. He can easy go in to you with Phase Dive and Timewinder to escape just with Z-Drive Resonance. Also he can make risky plays because of his Chronobreak. It's hard to play against him as Vel'Koz, because he can survive your damage output with Chronobreak. All you can do is build Morellonomicon to reduce his heal from ultimate.

Keep your distance, and don't come into his Phase Dive range.

Keep that in mind that he can come even closer with Hextech Rocketbelt!

Items

Doran's Ring is the best starting item for Vel'Koz. Every other item is just worse.

Dark Seal is wise option when you die in early game or have to recall to base. Take this item if you don't have money for Lost Chapter and if you snowball hard enough you can build Mejai's Soulstealer out of it.

As Vel'Koz you can build any boots you want depending on situation! Of course best option are Sorcerer's Shoes to potential burst, but when you play against Zed, Talon, Yasuo or any AD Assassin you can build Ninja Tabi. When enemy team got a lot of CC, you can build Mercury's Treads for defensive purposes.

Luden's Tempest is core item on Vel'Koz it gives you everything you need. Cooldown reduction, bonus mana, extra damage from passive. You just need that item in your item set.

Morellonomicon is good item, because of bonus magic penetration and Grievous Wound's effect. You want to build it as soon as possible against champion with extra heal abilites. Like Soraka Vladimir Ekko Lulu or even Kai'Sa as an adc to reduce her heal.

Liandry's Torment is excellent item on Vel'Koz.It scales excellent with Life Form Disintegration Ray true damage and also is good against every tank in the game like Zac Sion etc. In many scenarios i build it right after Luden's Tempest.

Rabadon's Deathcap is great as 3rd or 4th item on Vel'Koz. You get some extra AP which turns into more damage! If enemy stacks a lot of magic resist. I would rather go for Void Staff instead of Rabadon. If you are snowballing you can build it after Luden's Tempest. Never build Rabadon's Deathcap as 1st item, unless you are drunk or high.

Build Void Staff as the 3rd or 4th item. If you see that enemies are stacking a lot of magic resist go for it. If they are reckless and disrespect Vel'Koz as a midlaner go for Rabadon's Deathcap. If they build just some magic resist like Hexdrinker you can go for Morellonomicon.

Twin Shadows is a great item when you are playing Vel'Koz as support. I never build it on midlane, since League is a team game and you need more situational items! Feel free to do it on bot lane!

As I wrote in the Matchups Chapter. It's the best defensive item for midlaners in the game (NOT FOR YOU KAI'SA ). It's perfect against Zed Yasuo Fizz and bruisers like Irelia Nocturne or Camille. When they try to go deep just click Zhonya's Hourglass and wait for your teammates to regroup. Also it gives you armor and cooldown reduction.

Banshee's Veil gives you amazing spellshield which is great against champions like Zoe Jayce Nidalee etc. You can't dodge all skills, so its really great defensive item. Also it gives you cooldown reduction and big amount of ability power.

I never build this item on Vel'Koz, maybe on support when you want to be a good teammate. It's way better to go full Ap on support instead of going Rylai. Slow effect is just too weak. You can invest these 2600 gold into much better items.

Another boring item on Vel'Koz. Current meta is really fast and it's rarely hitting late game. Another 3200 gold wasted.

If you read this, congratulations! Your percentage chance to win a game now increased!
