I run 0/9/21 which is an unusual setup for Gangplank. Most people go 21/0/9, and are like omfg get the crit from offensive tree etc etc. But in reality the items in which you are building on GP give him enough offensive power later that the 21 in offensive tree is almost unnoticeable. With these items and runes you have plenty of crit chance and armor pen with out the offensive tree.

In my opinion it is much better to go utility, it gives you great lane staying power, good mana regen (which if Gangplank can not semi spam his abilities he is easy to shut down) some good movement speed, some gold stacking with philo stones, buff mastery which is always nice since you should be getting buffs as often as possible; CDR on teleport and flash and regular CDR which is always great.

The utility tree just gives you more, well utility which is what Gangplank needs to stay in lane and dominate.

Introduction

Gangplank is a pirate, and pirates are cool. I have played many many matches with Gangplank and have what I think is a unique but great take on how to play the scourge of the seas.

Many people see Gangplank as a weaker/ useless champion, but they are just mistaken in how you have to play him. Gangplank is not like any other champ at all, he must be played uniquely. Yes the basic principles are the same, farm well, establish lane dominance, don't die and get kills and push but its how you go about these as Gangplank that will make you a successful pirate. As a pirate get in the mind set that you need EVERYTHING, you can not ever have enough farm, and make sure you are last hitting with Parrrley like a champ. Gangplanks abilities do not have great synergy within themselves but they do with the right items, and to get these items you need what? Ah yes Gold! Gangplanks advantage over his opponents comes from being able to keep a stronger/longer lane presence than them. With Parrrley you can choose to farm your lane and not push it. Gangplank is an amazing laner if played correctly, and it is extremely hard to stop his farming. Remember these three goals, out farm your enemy, stay in lanes to get level advantage and more farm, push lanes and win! As gangplank I never waste time, I am either farming, pushing a lane, or fighting an opponent. As GP you don't have the luxury of waiting in bushes for 3 min for a gank, someone should be coming to your lane to gank your already weakened/ underfarmed opponent.

- This is poison it hurts bad things.

Your passive, eh it may seem a little weak at first but do not underestimate it. It scales very well into mid/late and has netted me a few kills after the opponent has run away. It is also a reapply-able heal reduction which is great against those pesky healers.

Parrrley - This is the ability you use to shoot stuff with.

Many people are confused about what Parrrley is, it is not just a ranged single target nuke; Parrrley is mainly used for farming. The thing I can not stress enough about playing Gangplank is to FARM. You have an amazing farming tool at your dispense plus it gives you TONS of extra gold, easily making Gangplank the richest character in the game. Also when you have enough mana regen to support spamming Parrrley it can an amazing harassment tool to establish lane dominance.

Remove Scurvy - This ability will save your life, plus its tasty.

Remove Scurvy is an amazing self heal/ get the hell outta CC ability. Remove Scurvy allows you to take harassment like a boss and keep on chugging in lane. Remove Scurvy allows you to get stunned, silenced, rooted, feared and all sorts of other stuff and still survive. Remove Scurvy allows you to go into a fight deceptively low and heal up to catch your opponent off guard. Remove Scurvy can be used to tank a low tower and get the kill.

Raise Morale - This ability makes you better at what you do, damage.

Raise Morale can be used to chase down enemy champs or get the heck outta dodge, the speed boost and damage boost on it are nice and now you don't have to carry wards around late game to get it.

Cannon Barrage - This is your ultimate ability, and yes some might think it lackluster, and in ways it is. But this ability has great versatility like all of Gangplanks moves. Say you are mid and top lane is pushing, drop this bad boy on the creep wave at the tower and eliminate it so they can not push the tower, not to mention all the nice gold you get. I often use this ability to push lanes I am not even in, and it helps out your farm. Sometimes it is 2v1 or 3v1 at my tower and I don't want them to push Ill just drop in on my lane to push it back at them and buy time for teammates to arrive. I use his ult more for massive/long range lane control. If you are sitting on this ability you are wasting it in my opinion; that is not to say drop it every time it comes of CD but it should be used often. It can help by slowing down enemies for a kill or an escape. This ability has great synergy with Amumu's ult or Galios ult.

Summoner Spells

Teleport - I use teleport for a few reasons when I go mid. It helps you establish lane dominance, you don't miss out on much xp or farm, and you can easily time your go-backs to when it comes of CD.

Flash - Great spell all around, escapes, catches etc.

Other good spells:

Usually I combine one escape and one offensive Summoner spell on GP, such as and or and

Runes

Since Gangplank has a lot of character flaws (as all pirates do) the right runes are quite important on him.

I run

Greater Mark of Desolation - Armor Pen. pretty self explanatory, helps out your damage from early game all the way to the end.

Greater Seal of Vitality - Health per level runes, some might think I am crazy when I do not have Mana Regen per level runes, but health per level runes gives gang that tanky dps feel like Garen or Renekton. Not to mention it adds damage to our atmas, which is the most important item in this build. You also will be getting plenty of mana regen from the utility tree and 2 philo stones you can spam anything.

Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist- Magic Resist per level, again you might think I am crazy for not having CDR per level glyphs. But you get plenty of CDR from having blue buff and Youmuus. The magic resist per level help you stay in lane against spell casters much easier, not to mention at level 18 its like buying a free Null-Mantel with the 24 magic resist.

Greater Quintessence of Desolation - Again more Armor Pen means more damage, pretty straight forward.

I went with 2 offensive Marks, and Quints and 2 def rune types glyphs and seals. Gangplank can be quite squishy naturally and these runes give you a edge in lane before you complete your items, which is of course your weakest time.

Items

This is the part of the guide where I will talk forever, about all sorts of Gangplank builds and why I do/ don't like them.

First we will go over what I find to be my most successful build on Gangplank.

I usually call mid when I solo, and this is what I like to do. I will talk about other items and builds advantages later.

x2
x3

These items give you great starting mana regen and hi hp regen with the 3 back up pots. You can use Parrrley enough to get several minion kills and harass your opponent, plus the pots. Even if you opponent is hyper aggressive with these items you can easily stay back and farm.

Usually I go back kind of early because I want to get my philo stones gold generating as early as possible, depending on my opponent and my farm I do differ what I buy first trip back but typically this is it.

Philosopher's Stone x1
and if I can afford them
and some more

At lower levels Hp pots are you best friend, I usually keep a few on me until i hit about lvl 12.

From there the next Philosopher's Stone you will acquire turns you into a farming machine. They both give you excellent mana regen so you can spam parrrley and your heal!!! Not to mention the great HP regen and gold you are getting. You can take harassment quite well while dishing it out with parrrley. At this point your objective is to farm while helping your team out with your ult.

Next trips back are largely dependent on your farm and kills/assist, but it goes something like this

- Great shoes all around, tenacity so you are even less susceptible to CC plus good magic resist! CC is a weak point sometimes for Gangplank, you need to be able to get in get out quickly so this just helps if you get caught off guard or without
Remove Scurvy.

- You should be richer than any other champ in the game at this point, Elixirs are a very good way to give yourself another edge on your opponent. Usually I do not get until later in the game but it is also viable at this point.

- Gangplank has a naturally high attack damage with so you can afford to get some survive-ability in a phage, plus it adds to our next big item

Now that you have been a laneing / farming machine it is time to get some good damage on you. The best way to do this is to buy a . It is a highly cost effective item! It gives you great Armor good Crit and scaling damage with you HP.

Now is the point in the game where I like to finish . It makes your hit like a truck. The slow is also extremely nice; Now you have a great synergy between and . Since Parrrley applies on hit effects you can practically catch anyone!

From here it is all about getting your crit and damage up, I usually pick up a to replace one of our Philo Stones since the Regen isn't needed as much anymore. Then the next three Items I build are

And make sure you top it all off with

Selling the last philo stone when needed. With these items you will be a force to be reckoned with, you are tanky, dish out tons of damage and fast as hell!

I usually have this full item set about 35-38 minutes into a game, which is quite fast for how expensive all these items are. Gangplank is easily the richest character in the game. Sometimes my level advantage is very large, one game I was level 17 and the lowest on the opposing team was 12 (not a leaver). I almost always have a large item advantage over my enemies due to all the gold.
