Choose Champion Build:

  • LoL Champion: Amumu
    AP Tank
  • LoL Champion: Amumu
    AP Damage Tank/Snowball

Introduction

Amumu is a champion that requires some good timing as well as positioning (like many champions) in order to be successful. He is not particularly hard to play but does require you to land his Bandage Toss, which is a skill shot. Imo, Amumu is one of the best champions to have on your team when it comes to the team fight phase. His ultimate Curse of the Sad Mummy can change the momentum of the game if done correctly in a team fight. He is overall a very rewarding champion to play because unlike other tanky AP champions with heavy cc, you can actually do some heavy team damage in fights.

Runes

Runes

Precision
Fleet Footwork
Phase Rush

Unlike other builds that take Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed, I take Greater Quintessence of Ability Power on Amumu. I feel that the extra ability power helps you speed through the jungle as well as help put some real damage on the enemies that you gank early game, especially when teamed up with Greater Mark of Magic Penetration marks. Movement speed is great, but with good positioning you can make-up for any of the movement speed lost when trying to track down enemies. The other runes are pretty self explanatory. I take Greater Seal of Armor seals for that extra defense in the jungle and the early level ganks and I take Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist glyphs to get that extra late game magic resist since some of the best items to get on Amumu are centered around armor and health.

Like all Champions your ultimate Curse of the Sad Mummyis always the most important. Max Tantrum second in order to do some more burst damage to the jungle creeps and enemy champions as well as take less damage, next max Despair for that sustained damage and then max Bandage Toss last. Also, do not forget to auto attack because your passive Cursed Touch reduces your auto-attack's target's magic resist

Spells

On Amumu I pick Smite and Flash. If your Jungling you should always take Smite, even if you dont need it because it is also good for taking the enemy jungle as well as objectives such as baron nashor and dragon. I pick Flash as my second spell for that ability to get out of trouble as well as a good tool to position myself in team fights. There are times when a good Flash can get you into position in order to use your ultimate Curse of the Sad Mummy on the entire enemy team, as well as give you a little extra range on the bandage toss on an essential target. Flash tossing isn't recommended because it can easily fail but is very rewarding when done correctly.

Items

When jungling Amumu I always start Hunter's Machete and 5 Health Potion. These items will help you clear the jungle quickly and keep your health topped off for your level 3 gank.
philosopher's stone

I usually try and Build a philosopher's stone and a Spirit Stone which both help with health and mana regen and the philosopher's stone will help you get that extra gold for mid/late game. If you are feeling slow, it might be a good idea to try and fit in Boots somewhere into the early game to help you get around the map faster.

At this point, your items start to really depend on what kind of team you are going up against and how much damage you are taking. I believe Sunfire Aegis to be one of the best items to build on Amumu because of the much needed health and armor as well as the nice aoe damage that it provides so i typically try to build this item first.

If you are still too slow, then I suggest either building Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads. Build Ninja Tabi if they have mostly AD and build Mercury's Treads if they have either a lot of cc, heavy magic damage, or if the team is pretty balanced.

Now, I tend to finish my Spirit of the Spectral Wraith for that extra ability power as well as the spell vamp which will help you stay in fights longer. This extra burst in ability power is very noticeable on Amumu and you will start to feel like you can really pick up some kills with this item.

At this point it really depends on what you need in order to survive team fights and help lead your team to victory. You will most likely be lacking some magic resist at this point so i suggest either Abyssal Mask or Spirit Visage as your next item. If you want that extra damage as well as that nice aura build a Abyssal Mask but if you think the cooldown reduction as well as the extra health and regen is more useful at this point, then build the Spirit Visage

At this point it is all situational. if you need armor and health build a Randuin's Omen, if you need health but not the armor build a Rylai's Crystal Scepter. If you need armor magic resist and health I suggest building a Runic Bulwark. If you want more damage and spell vamp as well as a nice aura to help your team build Will of the Ancients.

Now your build should be full, but you can always sell your Spirit of the Spectral Wraith and buy another item. I suggest any of the situational items that are suggested above, although Will of the Ancients is a nice item to build (if you don't need to get any tankier) because it is very similar to Spirit of the Spectral Wraith but stronger.

A Typical end game build should look like this

Creeping / Jungling

When playing Amumu it is best to not invade because you will get far behind if you do not get blue buff at level 1. My typical path with Amumu is: Wolves, Blue, Wraiths, Red, (Gank)

It usually depends on the champions in lane as well as their escape mechanisms and if our solo lane is playing against a counter when i determine where to gank first. Typically though, if I am the purple team I gank top or mid (only mid if pushed) and if I am the blue team I gank Bot, or mid (only mid if pushed). From there I typically like staying in the jungle and ganking whenever the opportunity arises until I hit 700 gold then I go back for my philosopher's stone. If i have to go back sooner than that, I build the ingredients for philosopher's stone then head back to the jungle.

It is hard to counter jungle efficiently with Amumu but if their jungle is behind of you know where he is, it would be a good idea to go into his jungle and steal some of his important camps in order to make him less of a threat.

Team Work

Since Amumu has some great cc abilities, he can benefit greatly from some good team work. Whenever you are ganking lanes or about to go into a fight make sure that your teammates are with you are ready to go in. Many Amumu players fail because they go into a team fight and land their abilities very well but their whole team is either too far away to do anything, or you caught them off guard and they get to the fight too late. Watch how your teammates react to your play, just like you would watch your enemy, in order to determine how well they would be able to follow you and pick up kills on your ganks. It is important to make use of your "targeting" pings as well as your "back" pings in order to let your team know what you are thinking about doing in a fight. A quick "Targeting" ping will let your team know that you want to go in and fight and will target who you want to kill first and a good "back" ping will let your team know that you do not want to fight and they should probably not jump into a fight because you are not in position to help them. Overall, this is a game of team work and when playing Amumu good team work translates into good ultimate's Curse of the Sad Mummy where your team has time to dps the enemies down while you make sure they cant move.
