[Matchups] Pyke: Support to high elo

By limeheart
The Guide
Ok so I made this guide because Pyke is a very fun champion but he doesn't seem to be too popular. This guide allows you to pick him up in ranked and in my opinion, is the best support to be climbing solo queue with in low elo.
The guide is professional one second and absolutely gen Z the other because I add to this whenever I want and my mood dictates how I type. sory!
Pyke is a champ that has playstyles that differ with each player, so it is important to find your own. You will notice that almost every high elo pyke has differences in their playstyle, and I will be giving tips based off of my own.
If you have any questions comment and I will respond soon.
Who are you
I am a pyke otp, peaking 700LP with 1,400,000+ Mastery points on Pyke and am currently grandmasters aswell as the rank 1 pyke in my server. These are my personal tips to climb with Pyke which is why this guide won't help much if you are already very high elo.
I also stream at if u wanna watch me int lmao
12.10 Incident
So pyke got nerfed really hard in a way that punishes him in every role or playstyle. I recommend rushing mobis and building prowlers claw more, with futures market to move more of your impact into the early game where you are still relevant. Duskblade resets are now harder to get and less valuable.
Hi here are some Pyke tips
-With the changes to Gift of the Drowned Ones, Pyke can outheal ignite damage and most damage over time only if he remains near 2 or more enemies. So when using Ghostwater Dive to survive ignite, do not run too far away. The range on Gift of the Drowned Ones is visible by hovering over the icon.
-Your Ghostwater Dive can be cancelled by recalling, if you do not want enemies to hear the sound.
-You can use Flash and Prowler's Claw during your W without cancelling it.
-Aim your ult to cover their flash (Your ult is big enough)
-Buy stopwatch if you have a large shutdown
-Contrary to popular belief, pyke has some peel available due to his high burst and slows. Obviously you cannot really peel a Zed 1 shotting ur adc, but you can kill whoever tries to kill your adc.
-Wait for enemy to use Zhonya's Hourglass by E'ing them. If they don't Zhonya your E, just ult them
-After recalling, path through the jungle to river and place control ward in pixel bush. This gives you freedom to roam and your jungler will be thankful
-Late game, it is often a bad idea to Phantom Undertow in unless you are confident you can escape or get a Duskblade of Draktharr proc. You should be playing patiently, waiting for an opportunity to R in and start killing people.
-Late game, often holding Death from Below is very impactful as pyke is 10x less scary without ult, so people will be looking to Flash or Zhonya's Hourglass it, that they may not realise that they will just die to damage. You will also end up making them use these abilities for no reason. The only time to R early is on a CC'd enemy that will not receive burst of healing.
-Do not be afraid to use Phantom Undertow as a gap closer. This is extremely strong in early game roams as you do not need stun to kill them or burn their flash. E closer to them for a better Bone Skewer angle, but don't E into a teamfight or you will be bursted.
-If you fall behind on pyke, it is imperative that you buy some armor/magic resistance as you will be underlevel, and pyke cannot get HP which is what you usually buy when behind.
-HP is less gold efficient than just straight up AD
-40% CDR is the optimal spot. You do not need any more.
-Always try to have 3 wards down like this : 1 ward in the middle of mid lane to see enemy rotation, 1 ward covering a jungle intersection and 1 ward on the objective.
-In lane 2v2, you must make sure your Phantom Undertow is not flashed out of. To do this, you can use all your burst on enemy adc and force them to flash, before following with your E to stun and kill. You can also Flash after them if they flash your E, but if you miss you are so dead.
[*] Q:
They are going to dodge with a little sidestep, don't use natural instinct to hook, think to yourself that they WILL step in the opposite direction. It feels wrong but it will work and you will get used to it. If they are running you down eg Ashe, Kog, Zeri, they will do a quick dodge backwards away from you if you try to hook.

E directly on top of them, don't aim it like a normal projectile since they will never walk into it. Use W to help hit it.

Use the flash cover thing, R is actually easiest to dodge if you place it directly on top of them as flash or dash in any direction will dodge.
So Pyke's combos are actually really simple, all you need to learn is a few fundamentals and fit them together to form a combo.
The most important fundamental is that Phantom Undertow will follow you anywhere and that Pyke will teleport to the center of his ultimate if it hits someone. Using these, you can string E with Flash or Death from Below to land a stun, before using Hail of Blades and short Q.

Q E Cancel: I'm putting this at the top because its by far the most unknown/elusive mechanic.
Basic in lane combo on flashless enemy: This is a basic E flash combo to setup a kill. It will work in lower elo on enemies with flash but once you get to platinum, it is very predictable and they will preemptively flash. You can do this without flashing to bait it out.
E towards them, flash behind them last second so your E lands. Then, hold Q while walking around them and flip them towards your team.
E + R: this is usually when you already secured a reset, but the last target is getting away and you cannot catch them with just Phantom Undertow or Bone Skewer.
E towards them, and ult in front of them so that you land in front, and your E will follow up. Then, apply the Q flip fundamental earlier to flip them towards your team.
Q + E: Simplest combo. Guarantees a stun on targets without movement abilities or flash. Just Q (Does not matter if short or held) and instantly E onto them. not hard.
Q + Flash: Another fundamental. This can be done with both the short and held Q. With the held Q, it is quite simple as you just Flash while you are channelling hook to extend range. With short Q, it has a short cast animation that you can flash during. This makes it extremely fast and also hides the animation. Press Q and then flash instantly, instead of flash and then Q. You can follow this up with E or ult. You can use this in an advanced E flash combo. It is like the normal E flash combo, but when you E towards them, use short Q before your flash. This allows your flash to miss but you can still walk behind them to stun due to the slow. Use this if you are out of range or for a quick 1 shot.
All other combos are simply a combination of these, so experiment.
Warding spots
The most important part of being a support is to place wards in the game to help your team get information. These are the spots for early game to spot the enemy jungler. The ganks in lane are to prevent lane ganks that some junglers love to do. (Blue if you are redside, vice verca)
When Dragon spawns, these are the ward you will want to place. Note that you should always have a ward in the middle of mid lane outside of the enemies tower, so you can see where they rotate to. (Red if you are blue side, Blue if you are red side, Pink is control wards.
