Alistar is a champ that does a very similar thing to Shen, though Shen has a shorter cooldown with Q and more damage. The only issue you should have is leaving adc under turret as Alistar has really good dive potential. Outscale him as well.
Amumu
Engage tank support that you can punish. Combines well with mages bot as he enables them to do additional true damage, but not enough to warrant him to be a big threat.
Aphelios
Easy to champion to get on top of for Shen and does not do much outside of occasional Q poke. Most people don't 100% know how to play Aphelios in lower elos as gun rotations are important
Ashe
Fairly easy to get on top of, however as she has perma slow from autos, can kite you. As long as you have W to get out you are fine if you miss taunt. Don't disrespect her even if she is weak as she can be a problem very quickly.
Bard
For the most part, Shen loses versus Bard as he outroams Shen by defualt and scales much better as Bard is a scaling support. The only way to gain a lead is to punish his roams or beat him early. The plus side is that Bard is not picked a lot in lower elos and he is not an easy champ to play so enemy is required to perform.
Blitzcrank
Whilst Shen can combat fairly well against Blitz, this champion can still easily kill your ADC. Be ready to counteract hooks with taunts and block knock up punches with your W and you should do well. His R does destroy shields (R and P shields) so keep that in mind.
Brand
As long as you dodge his W/Q, Brand is an easy champ to play versus. Just don't get into late game as Brand will do lots of damage at this stage of the game.
Braum
Do well into Braum as he does not do too much in lane outside of passive procs, which you can easily deny with W. Can also do well against him outside of lane too.
Caitlyn
Whilst you can block headshots with W, it is hard to get onto her as she Es your E. Her Q also can also chunk you in lane and ignores your W.
Camille
Shen is one of Camille's biggest counters top lane and it is even bigger support as putting her behind from support role makes her pretty useless. You can deny Q2 with W and your mixed damage from Q autos counters her P shield.
Corki
He uses W to dodge your taunts, all his spells ignore your W and deal good damage and has poke with R post 6. Very hard to deal with at any stage of the game for Shen.
Draven
Shen can deal with Draven fairly well, can absorb and block a lot of his damage with passive and W. Be cautious with Draven E as it interrupts your taunt. Punish him if he uses E aggressively as most Dravens do play aggressive.
Elise
Both these champs can cancel each other out fairly well as Shen can withstand Elise burst, but Elise can dodge Shen E and disengage with rappel. Elise is a little difficult to play, so can abuse players who don't have a lot of experience on her.
Ezreal
Similar to Cait, he will your E your E. Can block his Qs with your ult though. Can be a rough laning phase at times but can deal with him well outside of lane.
Hwei
As long as you are not getting hit by his fear ability, which interrupts your taunt, you can get taunt him without too much difficulty and he is very squishy. Very similar to Xerath
Janna
Shen gets countered by most enchanters and Janna is the worst one. She has great disengage for your taunts and can easily kite you out.
Jhin
Can be tough to get onto this champ as he builds swifties and gets movespeed from crits. Can block 4th shot with W, which can bait him out if you or ADC is low.
Jinx
Easy to get on (mind traps though) and block a lot of her dps with W.
Kai'Sa
Can deal well with both poke and on-hit kaisa quite well. P shield for poke, W for on-hit. Do not let her reach her lategame though as she will tear through you.
Kalista
Very tough as her hopping makes it hard to land taunts and she can kite you out well.
Karma
Shields block quite a bit of your damage and makes it harder to land taunt. Her W makes Shen borderline unplayable. Mantra Q in lane also hurts a lot.
Karthus
An APC bot lane that Shen finds very easy to deal with. Has very little self protection from abilities and Taunt CC makes him unable to cast Q. Easy to walk out unscathed from his passive. Play aggressive, not passive.
Kog'Maw
Easy target to get on, however is mostly played with enchanters so you are more worried about them than Kog. His E ability is also a decent kite ability.
Leona
One of the best matchups for Shen support. Let her engage and you win easily as you taunt her, block her Q with W and shred through her with Q autos. She cannot challenge you at any point in the game as she likes to dive a lot, which you completely nullify.
Lucian
Hard to taunt because of his dash. W does not block his R. If Lucian does E aggressively, punish him then. Is not as annoying as Ezreal or Caitlyn. W can block his passive autos as well.
Lulu
Only chance of winning is to level 2 her, especially if she starts Q level 1. Outscales you super hard and deals with you very well in lane.
Lux
As long as you do not int into Lux, you will win. Dodge her Q and you can beat her easily. She is very squishy and her shields are not nearly as strong as the enchanter shields. She also does not have that same threat that a Brand or Zyra would have come late game.
Maokai
Similarly to Leona, Maokai cannot do his thing without getting hard punished by you. Just make sure that he is not cancelling your taunts with his Q smash as it can interrupt your taunt. Outside of that, this is an easy matchup for Shen.
Milio
His Q interrupts your E and has shields/heals to reduce your damage. His R also has great influence for teamfights and cleanses your taunts.
Miss Fortune
Can be annoying as her ridiculous movement speed means she just runs away from you, but you can taunt on top of her when she ults and block some of her damage as well with W
Morgana
Morgana E cancels your taunt and ignores your Q slow, however your Q can still be empowered. Make sure you and your ADC are not hit by roots and you can fight. Even if you do get hit, you can W to mitigate potential damage you take. Be cautious at 6 as taunting in makes it easy for her to get her ult off.
Nami
There is some counterplay as her bubble is quite dodgeable. she is also very squishy and whilst her heal does make up for some of the damage you heal, an early ignite can reduce this and may force her to flash away.
Nautilus
Another divey engage support that you can nullify. Do be cautious of the Naut/Samira combo as this combo is incredibly potent.
Neeko
Can be quite annoying, but if you are able to play around what Neeko is trying to do with her passive/clones, you can punish her very well.
Nilah
She has dashes and a Jax E in her kit, meaning she can dodge your Q autos and reduce damage. She scales very well and can shred you outside of laning phase.
Pantheon
Can be quite easy actually. The second he stuns your adc, taunt him and use Q-W as your adc will be on the blade as well. This means that Panth nearly has to use E to get away, reducing the potential damage he could have done to your adc. Additionally, Pantheon from behind means he is fairly weak, but do not disrespect his roams as they are quite lethal. Keep tabs on his location on the map. Ping his 6 when he reaches it to inform your team of this.
Poppy
Should not be playable for Shen. She has good damage and engage that Shen cannot block and whereas Shen can counteract other tank support engages, he cannot with Poppy. Her W interrupts dashes (your taunt) and grounds you, giving her and her carry free will to kill your adc.
Pyke
Can be tough, especially versus a decent Pyke with lots of experience. Has spells that W cannot block, but can block his hail of blades autos. If you or an ally are below is R execute, a shield will not do anything against this either. If you are able to scale or punish him early for misplays, he will be quite useless.
Rakan
A little harder than Pyke as he is tankier and scales much better whilst also having the similarities in terms of mobility. Has a lot more reliable utility through heals and shields. Jumping on the ADC is a decent reply to Rakan's engage in lane.
Rell
Very easy to play vs. Second she tries to engage, taunt and burst her, she will have to flash away. Care that her Q can shield break though.
Renata Glasc
Pretty unplayable. Her Q can interrupt your E and move you again, her W ability can be extremely annoying and her R is decent against you as you can apply Q autos to your adc. Also outscales you like crazy.
Samira
Outside of the Naut combo, this can go one of two ways; she bulldozes you, or you make her useless. Try to save taunt for when she is going to use ult as cancelling her ult early makes this champion much less potent.
Senna
Very tough, but not impossible. She is quite squishy and her heals are not crazy strong. Make her weak early and do not let her scale with souls. Not an easy task to beat her though. Her W is also very annoying to deal with.
Seraphine
Can be punished early, but is very hard to deal with in lane if you are not playing very aggressive against her. Heavily outscales you.
Sivir
Her spell shield will block your taunts so try to play around that, but it is not an easy lane. Her Q chunks you, similar to cait and her R grants her movespeed, making it a little easier for her to kite you out.
Smolder
Smolder E makes it very easy for him to get away from your taunts and he can farm stacks quite easily off you because of this, and if you play more passive then he is stacking for free. Extremely hard adc to play vs for Shen.
Sona
Like seraphine, heavily outscales you and will always be more useful aa the champ plays herself. However, if you get a taunt on her, she can be very punishable and you can contest much easier vs her in lane. You can also block her Passive autos with W.
Soraka
Probably the easiest enchanter to go up against. If you dodge a lot of her Qs as well she won't have the sustain advantage. A little easier with an Ezreal to poke her out in lane as this makes your all-in more potent with ignite as well to counter any healing. Do not engage on the adc unless you also taunt soraka as her E will destroy you.
Syndra
APC that is tough to get on to due to her stun cancelling taunt. Also does a lot of damage and scales well into the game.
Tahm Kench
Can be pretty good. You will beat him with auto Qs and taunting him whilst hes low makes him unable to use his E for the big shield. Also a matchup where running Grasp can be a pretty good idea.
Taric
You can beat him as you have good damage and your W blocks his Passive autos. However, he does have more dps as he can keep on going with the passive + Q whereas you are locked behind your Q cooldown. He also has a bit more utility with his heals and shields.
Thresh
This should be a 4 or even 5, but in gold elo, Thresh players simply are not as good. In higher elos, Thresh should just flay your taunts and make your game a nightmare to play, but they are not as good in lower elos and it makes this matchup very playable for Shen.
Tristana
Has good disengage with W and R but can still get hit by taunt whilst using W (it does not interrupt though). Her main way of dps is through auto attacks, which you block through W. Be wary of her bomb as well as that does a lot of damage. W blocks autos, but does not stop her bomb stacking though.
Twitch
Similarly to Kog, is played mostly with enchanters so can be tough. However, he is a pretty easy target to get on top of and you block a lot of his damage through autos (though he can still stack passive). Keep an eye for supports roaming if you can't see twitch on the map as he may be with the support but invisible.
Varus
On hit is quite easy as you block a lot of the damage and he is quite easy to get on top of. Lethality and even AP Varus are quite different as his damage is a lot more in his abilities, so you want to be dodging them as much as possible. Does not make him a lot harder though.
Vayne
This matchup in top lane would be quite a nightmare for Shen and still is a little bit in bot lane. However, Vayne is not going to be as keen to auto all the time in bot as you have adc with you and the 2v2 changes how difficult vayne can be. Put this champ a little bit behind and it can be very hard for her to deal with you. If she gets ahead though, you are going to be the one in trouble.
Vel'Koz
Can be quite hard to play vs as he has a lot of skillshots and Q and E can cc you (slow and knock-up respectively) also has true damage in his kit, which combines with his R will melt you. Can be punished though.
Xayah
Annoying champion to deal with for Shen. Try to punish her as much as possible pre 6, as her ult + E combo will be a great counter for your taunts otherwise. Watch her feathers on the ground when taunting as well.
Xerath
Annoying mage champion, but if you are able to get on top of him, is very punishable and will nearly always result in a kill or burned summs. Easier and more playable than velkoz, but harder than lux
Yuumi
Her shield can be used for your taunt to reduce damage. Other than that, she doesn't do much, its Yummi. Avoid her Qs so as not to take damage and its not loseable. Does scale well though but only on the buddy that she has.
Zeri
Her passive works very well against yours as she absorbs enemy shields. Can dash to avoid taunt, but is fairly small or over a wall and the fight is over. When she reaches 6, can kite you out with extra movement speed so best to disengage most times when she Rs.
Ziggs
An APC that is very annoying and cannot really get onto due to high range and his W which can interrupt your taunt. Scales very well and will be a constant nuisance throughout the game. Punish him for poor positioning whenever possible.
Zilean
Dodge his bombs and you should be fine. Very weak early and is therefore a target you can easily punish. Becomes harder later into the game though as his E is up more often and his R has a really short cooldown as well.
Zyra
W blocks plant autos, though Zyra is still a really annoying champion to play vs purely because of hard it can be to punish her. Plants give her good range and protection. take advantage of stronger early and punish her for going solo into jungle to get vision.
Aphelios
Has no real synergies with Aphelios outside of taunting enemies to make it easier for him to land Rs.
Ashe
Ashe's slows makes it easier to catch up to targets for taunt and a global R that stuns is of course very useful.
Caitlyn
Very good adc pairing with Shen. Both have strong early games and the better the Cait, the stronger this pairing is.
Corki
Another very strong combo, especially since Corki can play aggressive. Landing a taunt means Corki can land a free bomb for more damage.
Draven
Very good due to very strong early games. Both play well off of each other.
Ezreal
Whilst there is no outright synergy between abilities, Ezreal is an ADC that can stand on his own two feet without needing too much assistance, and this allows Shen to do more engaging as a result as he does not have to worry about his adc as much. Ezreal also has good poke and burst with W+Q in lane as well.
Hwei
Can be picked bot. Decent synergy through CC chains.
Jhin
Jhin has good burst in lane. Your taunt should make for an easy root for Jhin. Try taunting enemies in lane whilst Jhin is on his 4th shot for devastating burst. Jhin does not require a huge amount of peel either.
Jinx
She can E on top of who you taunted for extra CC. If you can get her a lead, she will take over the game.
Kai'Sa
Taunt does apply her passive, however she is pretty weak and has no good follow-up for your engages.
Kalista
Pretty strong early and encourages risk-taking as Kali can R you. Need to perform well with Kalista for full effectiveness.
Karthus
Has no good follow-up outside of using W and Q, though you offer good peel for Karthus to land Qs and keep enemies away from him.
Kog'Maw
Not a good synergy. You are not encouraged to engage if enemy has a good response for the Kog as you leave him incredibly exposed by engaging.
Lucian
Both strong early and aggressive early as well so you both should have similar playstyle in the laning phase. Also an ADC that does not require a large amount of assistance either.
Miss Fortune
You have good early with her poke and if you land good taunts, is good set up for her R.
Nilah
Champion that likes to play aggressive and plays well alongside you as she likes to dash in a lot. Will also apply the Jax E to you which is good for after W goes down.
Samira
Similarly to Nilah, plays very well alongside you as she likes to dash in. Whilst no knockup bonus, is still very good. This champion also utilises her lead so much quicker than Nilah can. Additionally, you can R Samira for when she goes in and ults people.
Sivir
Not the best synergy with Sivir. Easy Q for her if you land your taunt and the movespeed from her R is nice to catch up to enemies and taunt them, but not much else and the synergy is not very potent either.
Smolder
Actually a decent synergy as Smolder has good safety with E to get out of trouble. Your taunt also makes it easier for him to land his abilities and get stacks as well.
Syndra
Similar to Hwei, Syndra is good synergy because you can CC chain. Syndra has the edge as her combo has more burst than Hwei.
Tristana
Very good early once you hit level 3 as you can E-Q-W whilst Tristana can jump in and stack her bomb without having to worry too much about taking damage as well. This combo also works well for making picks outside of laning phase as well.
Twitch
Quite similar to Kog in that there isn't any really good synergy, although if your Twitch needs to go AP, there is better synergy here as Twitch E does a lot more damage from AP builds.
Varus
Is better with lethality Varus as you make it easier for him to land his abilities.
Vayne
Poor synergy early as Vayne does not offer enough for you compared to most champions. However, you can R her whilst she is invisible in her R to surprise enemies.
Xayah
No real synergy with Xayah. It is more about setting up roots for her with her feather recall for high damage.
Zeri
Does not really offer anything outside of a W that does not do a whole lot of extra damage. Have to focus on peeling for Zeri as well to make her effective.
Ziggs
Ziggs has very high range so you do not need to focus too much on protecting him as much. If you can taunt multiple enemies, this can also make for a great Ziggs R to combo with.
Synergies
IdealStrongOkLowNone

Has no real synergies with Aphelios outside of taunting enemies to make it easier for him to land Rs.

Hello, I am an EUW Support/ Shen main low elo gold trash that goes by the in-game name of 'ShriekingMammoth' and have been playing League of Legends since Season 7 (around April 2017 to be precise). I enjoy playing support, but I really like picking off-meta support picks and trying (greifing my teammates) to make them work.
I peaked gold 1 in Season 2024 split 2, though I do not primarily play ranked
I am making a support Shen guide as, well, personally I just wanted to do something in my spare time, but if this guide encourages even one person to try out some Shen support, this will be a successful guide as far as I am concerned.
Why Shen? Because he is the only champion that I have actively mained in this game and whilst I do not play him as often as I do now, he is still my go to pick. I love his gameplay and his uniqueness as a champion.
He is probably the one champion I have most knowledge on (I think) and have plenty of experience on Shen (380k mastery) as a whole and some of the roles that he plays in. I have many games on Shen Support/Top, have played a fair amount of him in Jungle and even the odd game of Shen Mid/Bot.
Why play Shen support?
Shen is no stranger to the support role and has some usefulness to this role. He has some crowd control and great utility that he can provide to his teammates and is a decent source of peel for his carries as well.
Because of this, Shen is considered something of a flex pick, meaning he can played into numerous roles and the enemy will not be 100% sure where that champion is going to be played.
When should you pick Shen support?
You should be picking Shen support as a good answer to hard engage tank supports such as Leona, Nautilus and Alistar as Shen is more than a match for those champions.
You should not be picking Shen support into enchanters such as Lulu, Janna and Seraphine as these champs are able to combat well against you in lane and heavily outscale you outside of laning phase as well. Shen works well into compositions that like to engage a lot onto your carries, as ]]Shen]]'s kit is very good at counteracting these with the use of taunts, blocking auto-attacks, shields and making sure that he is tanky himself so that he is able to withstand the engage himself.
Try not to pick Shen into champions that scale well into the late game such as Smolder, Kayle, Kassadin as he tends to struggle against these champions.
Because Shen is a flex pick, he is technically a blind pick. However, you should always make sure that the support is not going to be picking an enchanter, so it is usually best that you try to get the counter pick to see if Shen is a sound option for your team.
What runes do you go?
The go-to runes that you saw are the best rune choices for Shen support and there is not many alternatives in terms of keystones, runes or secondary trees.
- This is the core keystone for Shen support as you need the increase in resistances when activating it. Your should help get the damage as well. Whilst is Shen's best keystone, however in 2v2 lane, it is much harder to proc grasp without getting punished, especially in a matchup that you lose.
for , and , it is completely up to you and there is no right or wrong answer. I personally go , but it is personal perference. I put on the page as that is the most consistent rune out of the 3 and best for laning phase. is good, but has too much counterplay to be considered a reliable rune.
Items on Shen support
Shen is able to use a wide variation of both tank and support/tank items effectively, which is another reason as to why Support Shen is a good pick.
Never build Knight's Vow as a 1st item, this should be 2nd at the very earliest. Build Thornmail for anti-heal (keep in mind that the Grievous Wounds effect will only apply if the enemy auto-attacks you). Build Abyssal Mask if the enemy is stacking heavy MR as this help out your AP damage dealers. Build Randuin's Omen for heavy crit compositions and the slow active. Very useful vs traditional crit ADCs such as Tristana.
Boots and fun for items for support
For the boots, I made brief descriptions for what boots to buy on Shen and why they are good choices using the 'notes' feature. Be sure to have a look over to see these.
I also added some for fun items that you can build if you are giga-ahead or feel like you need to carry the game on your back. These items are not part of the core build and should not be built on a game-by-game basis. You can check the reason for why they are good through the 'notes' feature as well.
Summoner spells
You always want to go and . gives you a lot more kill pressure in lane and you always want to have for playmaking with your .
is okay, but you lose so much more kill pressure in lane, that taking is the much better option.
Matchups/Synergies
For matchups, I have given a description/rating for every champion in both the bot and support role for how the matchup goes.
For synergy, I have done the same, but only for champions that are considered "botlane" champions and how they synergise well with Shen, mostly during laning phase but also outside of laning phase as well.
Rundown of Shen's abilities.
I am going to briefly explain what each of Shen's abilities does and how you should use them. I am going to devote another section to + combos to know exactly how it works and how to be consistent with them as they are very powerful and how to use effectively and getting the most out of your ults.
Passive - Ki Barrier
Whenever Shen uses any of his abilities, he gains a shield for a couple of seconds. This ability has a cooldown that can be reduced by using his abilities "correctly" (I will explain what this means for the other abilities). You should keep an eye on the cooldown of this as it is something that you can play around.
Q - Twilight Assault Shen's Q revolves around his spellblade, a key mechanic of Shen. When you press Q, you bring the spellblade to your position and your next 3 autos deal bonus magic damage based on the targets max HP. If the spellblade collides with any enemy champions, they are slowed whilst running away from Shen and empowers his 3 autos, dealing more damage and increasing attack speed (which is more damage output). It is important that you empower your Qs as much as possible as this is your main damage source. If your spellblade collides with an enemy, it also reduces the cooldown of Ki Barrier.
When activated, creates a protective ring around the spellblade and blocks any auto-attacks recieved by champions standing inside it. This is a very useful ability that can also block abilities such as Pick A Card, Decisive Strike, or Trample auto stun. If no one is inside the ring when activating the ability, there will be a short delay before the ring appears. Successfully blocking an auto-attack reduces the cooldown of Ki Barrier.
Shen dashes in any direction and taunts any enemies he hits along the way. He cannot taunt or damage minions with this ability. This is your main CC ability, and successfully taunting an enemy champion will reduce the cooldown of Ki Barrier. Do note that if you taunt a champion and walk outside of their attack range, they will follow you until they are either in range or the taunt expires. This can be very useful vs melee champs as they will run after you uncontrollably.
Shen can cast his R on any his allies to grant a shield, which can increase based on their missing HP at the time of casting. Shen will then channel for a couple of seconds. After this channel, both Shen and the spellblade will appear on top of the champion that he cast Stand United on. The shield will stay for a few seconds after Shen appears, however if the champion Shen ults still dies, Shen will not appear. Additionally, if Shen is interrupted during his channel, he will not join the champion he cast Stand United on.
How to perform Flash +Taunt Combo
Shen's + combo is a fairly simple combo to pull off, but you can easily mess it up as well. The key point to remember that when you do , your taunt will also stop after you flash.
This combo is very effective for getting on top of high priority targets or grabbing an early kill in lane with . Additionally, it also allows you to taunt enemies that were originally outside of the range of Shadow Dash.
To Successfully execute a + , when you use your Shadow Dash, as you go to , aim your cursor on top of your target. This will put you on top of your target and taunt them.
Additionally, you can taunt multiple targets as you can taunt one person mid Shadow Dash and then onto another person and taunt them as well. Use the practice tool and train on target dummies to get used to it as it is has a lot of potential to win games.
How to use R effectively
Shen's ultimate is one of the most powerful tools in the game when used well and can swing the game into your favor at any point in the game, whether it be laning phase, mid-game or the late game.
One pointer for Stand United is do NOT use this ability purely to safe someone's skin. If your mid laner is about to die to under tower and you save them with your , that is cool and your mid laner is happy, but the team did not gain anything out of that play outside of denying 300g to the enemy mid and you are out of position to help your adc. helping out in a 1v1 duel where your teammate might lose is fine, so long as you gaurantee that kill and that there is something to play for as well, for example a or .
Additionally, when casting your ultimate, be ready to use both your Spirit's Refuge and Shadow Dash as you finish your channel.
A situation where your ultimate may be good for is 1v2 situations. This may occur most in top lane as many 1v2s happen there. You can really help out your top laner by Stand United them to turn that into a 2v2 and if it results in a double kill for your top laner, you have swung that lane heavily into their control. The same applies for mid lane as well.
Another situation is if your jungler gets jumped on whilst taking a or objective as you can turn a situation where your jungler gets killed and the monster objective taken away into securing the objective and getting some free kills in the process.
There are also combos that you can use with Stand United that synergises really well with other champions, specifically dive champions. A good example of this is Nocturne's Paranoia ability has he can dive on top of carries who have some protection, knowing that you will be there to assist him. Other examples of this include Diana, Kha'Zix, Jarvan IV and Vi.
You can also use your Stand United to counter champions diving your carries and trying to kill them. Timing is very important as you want to make sure that the enemy commits into that play. Champs that may look to dive your carries to kill them are usually assassins such as Akali, Zed, Talon. Try using Stand United as they cast Perfect Execution, Death Mark, Shadow Assault respectively so that they have to commit to the play. This should result in at least the enemy diver giving their life to you.
How to play laning phase
Depending on who your ADC is, you are either going to be playing aggressive and engaging the enemy team, or playing more passive and waiting for the enemy support to make a move and counter-act their play. If against enchanters ( Janna, Lulu, Seraphine) you should play as aggressive as possible to gain as big of a lead as possible as you will not win outside of lane.
If your ADC is Samira, Nilah, Tristana you want to make aggressive plays as these champs can follow-up quite nicely with your Shadow Dash engage. Level 2 cheese is very strong on Shen as he has a good powerspike with both Shadow Dash and Twilight Assault combo. Just remember that Level 2 is obtained after the first wave + 3 melee creeps from the second wave. Your support item can also help to kill the minions faster with the execute.
If your ADC does not have as strong follow-up to your engage, you want to play a bit more passive, unless you are against enchanters. Against the tank engage supports such as Leona, you want to be waiting for them to engage and punish them when they do so becauase they will most likely have to out of the fight, or give you free gold for your team.
When you get your ultimate and use it during laning phase, as soon as the fight is over, make sure to instantly, do not dilly dally around as you are leaving your adc exposed, and be sure not to leave your adc in a position where it is easy to set-up a dive against them. The enemy champions should indicate how good their potential dive is e.g. Elise's and Alistar's are very good champions for this. The wave state is also an indication as a large enemy minion wave crashing under tower is also good dive potential.
A good way of playing aggressive, which can also help the Janna, Lulu etc. matchups is using the bushes/alcove to play out of vision, as the enemy risks walking into Shadow Dash range by walking up to ward or contest you. If they do place wards in the bush, you can use or to get rid of them. You can also select at the start of the game instead of the traditional Yellow Trinket. Just be sure to tell your ADC that you will have no wards until you have upgraded your support item ( Runic Compass).
Playing Shen support in the mid/late game
The main difference between Shen Support and Top in the mid/late game is that you will not be in a side lane getting farm as you are going to be with your team a lot more.
Make sure that your duties as a support do not lack e.g. getting vision control and setting up for objectives, whether that be a or .
Be sure to hover around your carries around the map to make sure that they are protected whilst pushing out waves and farming, although if you do have Stand United, feel free to roam a little bit, but make sure to look at your mini-map incase anyone gets jumped on.
During teamfights, you want to be doing one of two things; you either want to be engaging onto their carries with Shadow Dash or the + combo and killing their carries so you have a good early advantage during the teamfight, or to provide good peel for your carries by using Shadow Dash, the slows from Twilight Assault and blocking any incoming damage with well-timed and positioned Spirit's Refuge. Do not underestimate your own damage either, as empowered Twilight Assault autos can really increase the overall damage output of your team, as well as aid your carries in killing beefy bruiser targets such as Darius or Renekton.
Make sure that you identify what you need to do depending on the compositions of both your enemy and your team. If your team is aggressive and wants to engage, you should aid them in this with. However, if you have squishies that need peel who are up against diver compositions or enemies that want to get on top of your carries, you are going to need to protect and peel for them.
Final Thoughts + Thanks
I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my noob Shen support guide, though I hope you learnt something from this guide.
My objective was simple; to make a guide that may encourage someone to pick up Shen support and start playing them, as well as creating an informative guide based on my knowledge of playing Shen and my experience playing League of Legends.
Shoutout to Jhoijhoi's BBCode formatting example guide as it has helped this guide look more presentable and readable. I hope to get better at the formatting, but I am still happy with what I have produced.
