This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Stealth Vs Stealth. However you have AoE non-target abilities. Rake and Shadow Assault can cover all of Akali's Twilight Shroud (W).
Anivia
Capitalize by dodging her Flash Frost (Q) which can stun and her Glacial Storm (R) to avoid being critically stricken by her Frostbite (E). Cutthroat can bypass her Crystallize (W) if you can get into range.
Annie
I'd argue this is a tough matchup since she out-ranges you with her auto attacks, Summon: Tibber's (R) zoning, and her point-click Disintegrate (Q). She can burst you in the middle of your rotation. Only go for a kill when her stun is down.
Ahri
It can be a tough lane if Ahri is smart. But it shouldn't be a problem if you take advantage of her Charm (E) being on cooldown or cutthroating the second you see the pink heart in flight. It will throw her off guard by missing both portions of her Orb of Deception (Q) if she links it with her charm. This way you should be able to win lane/trades.
Azir
This can be a difficult to lane against because of how volatile his soldiers can be. They also provide a buffer zone from you initiating any harass, kill, or last hit on minions. Cutthroat can bypass his wall from Emperor's Divide (R) if you can manage to get into cutthroat range. Wait for him to use his R and engage. Still be mindful of the number of soldiers you may be facing and the mobility he has with his kit. Take advantage of him being low on mana.
Brand
Cutthroat onto Brand at a good opportunity when he channels his Pillar of Flame (W). Avoid being near Allies/Minions/Monsters when he uses his ultimate, Pyroclasm (R). This will mitigate his damage when he tries to unload all of his spells onto you out of desperation.
Cassiopeia
You can't stand back and get harassed. You need to be able to hold your ground in the lane. At early stages of the game you can attempt to trade around level 3 with Q,W, and E and force her to become Out of Mana. Then take advantage of the lane. You can also cutthroat onto her when she pops down a Noxious Blast (Q) or a Miasma (W). Chances are when she uses either one, she'll be focused on landing Twin Fang (E). If you manage to blink and not get affected by her poison then her E will be thrown off cool down. Later in the game, to avoid being stunned by Petrifying Gaze (R), cutthroat onto her. Her immediate instinct would be to ult right away, take the time to walk back in front of her to dodge the stun. To make things more confusing for her, use Shadow Assault after landing from Cutthroat then walk over to either side of her, then finish the combo.
Cho'Gath
The bane of many assassins in mid lane. Ask for some backup from your jungler in this situation. Focus on farming when you can in lane or by taking raptors if it's okay with your ally jungler. Try to stay relevant by farming. Rush Tiamat to farm faster, this will also provide a huge damage boost towards high priority targets. Side stepping is a must in this lane. You absolutely do not want to be caught by his Rupture (Q) and Feral Scream (W) combo. It will debilitate you for ~3.5 seconds or possibly end you. But if you're ahead, stay on top of him by killing him repeatedly to deter him from stacking Feast (R).
Diana
Arguably a skill matchup. You can Cutthroat to her or a minion dodge her Crescent Strike (Q). However, her Pale Cascade (W) grants her a shield which will let her absorb your burst and retaliate. Her Moonfall (E) can also prevent you from escaping when you use Shadow Assault to get away if she times it right, followed by her Moon Rush (R) whether or not you're tagged with Moonlight.
Fizz
Rotating skills too fast when Fizz uses Playful/Trickster (W) can result in missing 50% or more of your burst. If you have to, you can cutthroat to him or a minion when he throws out Chum the Waters (R). Use Rake when he charges at you with Urchin Strike (Q) and save cutthroat for when he leaps off his troll pole.
Galio
His passive forces him to build MR which is useless vs Talon. Sidestep his Resolute Smite (Q) and Righteous Gust (E).
Heimerdinger
Like the Cassiopeia match up. You can't sit back and get harassed by his skills. Try you best to take out his H-28G Evolution Turret (Q). Focus them if you have to. His focus will be to keep his turrets alive as well. Once the turrets are gone his damage is significantly reduced. Harass both him and his turrets with Rake if you can. Avoid being stunned by CH-2 Electron Storm Grenade (E). If it's about to hit you, shadow assault to speed boost a few pixels away frm the hit box and burst him down. If you think he will use his Hextech Micro-Rockets (W) on you, cutthroat onto him and he will miss and panic.
Jayce
Jayce is innately tanky. He also has range on you. Start Doran's Shield if you have to because his auto attacks can deal plenty of damage to you and his Thundering Blow can disengage you from going all in. Ask for ganks. Focus on staying alive rather than getting kills. Farm and sidestep his Shock Blast (Q) and Accelerated Shock Blasts (EQ)
Karthus
Know how and when to sidestep is important to avoiding his Lay Waste (Q). IF he tries to cut off your escape with Wall of Pain (W), rather than walking into it if your tower is the path that is blocked off, stand in front of it and side step his Qs. Walking into the wall will have greater damage dealt to you if you get hit by his spells. You also become a much easier target for his Qs and his Defile (E).
Kassadin
A lot of people say Talon wins this matchup because Kassadin's Passive is useless against him. However he has a point-click Null Sphere (Q) to harass and Raking to harass will build up his Force Pulse (E) which he will Rift Walk (R) and use E on you. The best time to burst him is right when he uses R towards towards you which will go on a 5~ second delay. Use this window to kill him. Or when he uses multiple Rs, his mana cost for the next one will be too high. Use this other window to kill when he has to either choose to possible run away or fight back without an ultimate.
Katarina
This can be a tough match up since your kits are nearly identical. Since Cutthroat doesn't silence anymore, it's advised not to E onto her when she has Death Lotus (R) ready. Be able to Trade harass by Raking when she uses Bouncing Blade (Q). But if she Shunpo's (E) towards you to use Sinister Steel (W). Rake her first then Q her to trade. Use Cutthroat to chase for a kill after she flashes once she realizes her mistake.
Kayle
Kayle out-ranges you with her Righteous Fury (E) which also pushes the wave into your side. She will do what it takes to deny you minions this way. Try your best to last hit. It's not advised to cutthroat towards her seeing she can use Reckoning (Q) on you. This will be generally be followed up by her E and then auto attacking you until she feels unsafe. Also unloading your spells while she has Intervention (R) ready, either on herself or on your target, can result in you dying without trading kills. Having an ally with hard cc can secure kills on her or your target if she's unable to use her ultimate. Focus on farming and staying alive.
Kennen
He has range on you unlike the other melee ninjas. His stun from his passive can prevent you from escaping if you unsuccessfully kill him and overall be a huge nuisance when you lane against him. The main spell that triggers his stun is his Thundering Shuriken (Q) if he marks you with that, he will follow up with both portions of his Electrical Surge (W) to stun you and gain energy back. Don't cutthroat onto him until his passive, Mark of the Storm on you has faded because can still proc it with Lightning Rush (E) and Slicing Maelstrom (R).
Kha'Zix
Not that many players take Kha'Zix mid anymore, but when you have that moment when you 1v1 him this might all come in handy. Try to outsmart his Void Assault (R) by ducking in and out of brush. Only Shadow Assault when he uses his second one and wait until he comes out of stealth. Avoid being isolated by staying near minions or allies. Monsters will not count. Counter his Void Leap (E) by using Shadow Assault then Rake and Q. Save Cutthroat when he flashes away.
LeBlanc
A skill matchup where sidestepping her Ethreal Chains (E) is a must. If her E and her Distortion (W) are down, you can safely cutthroat in for a trade. However if you are attempting to kill her you can use your Q's bleed to you advantage. If she goes into stealth and splits, the Leblanc with the bleed effect is the target you want dead. She can still be tricky with her W since the downtime on it isn't very long around mid to late game. Try not to chase her if she get's out alive as you'll only be wasting time on other objectives or targets.
Lissandra
She can kite you by using Ice Shard (Q) and Ring of Frost (W). She can also negate your damage by using her Frozen Tomb (R) on herself. Try to engage on her when she least expects it by using Shadow Assault first so she can't directly target you for her Ultimate.
Lux
Use Cutthroat on Lux to dodge her Light Binding (Q) or her Lucent Singularity (E). Keep in mind she does have her Prismatic Barrier (W) to shield you burst. But it's easy to bypass with a quick rotation before the return to reshield her.
Sometimes when you're lucky you can cutthroat behind her when she channels her ultimate. She will be stuck in that animation until the spell is done channeling. She will die without doing any damage.
Malzahar
He has both a silence and suppress which can halt you from combo-ing. Avoid his Call of the Void (Q) at all times, it's his silencing ability for 2.5 seconds which makes getting away difficult, and stay away from your dying minions to avoid taking damage over time from his Malefic Visions (E). You might have to buy Quicksilver Sash to negate his Ultimate. Engage him with stealth first.
Morgana
She is a wall when it comes to mid lane. All she will do is push using Tormented Soil (W) until you become Out of Mana. Smart Morgana players will get in range to use Soul Shackles (R) then use her Dark Binding (Q) and W to finish you off. It will become nearly impossible to fight back. You're going to have play the farming game until you can kill her in the middle of her R channel.
Orianna
She will auto attack you to deal bonus damage from her passive and will zone you by using her Command: Attack (Q) and Command: Dissonance (W). Dodge her ball by cutthroating on her to avoid further damage from W or Crowd Control from her Command: Shockwave (R). She will immediately use her Command: Protect (E) to nullify damage once you land.
Rengar
Give him a taste of his own medicine by doing R>E>W>Q when he least expects it.
Syndra
Similar to the Orianna matchup. If you get hit by her Dark Sphere (Q), cutthroat immediately to avoid being followed up by hard CC from her Scatter the Weak (E) and burst her down at level 6. Shadow Assault's stealth can avoid being clicked on by Unleashed Power (R). Sidestepping is easy in this lane since there's a small delay to her Dark Spheres (Q).
Twisted Fate
The only thing you have to avoid is his Gold Card stun from Pick a Card (W). He only have 2 offensive abilities so when he misses he won't be able to retaliate for a few seconds. Also when he goes to restore Mana by using his W on a minion you can cutthroat to threaten and harass him in lane.
Vel'Koz
Sidestepping the skill shots in his kit are a must to avoid him doing bonus true damage to you. Cutthroat is you best friend in this lane matchup. You can use it when you get knocked up by his Tectonic Dissruption (E) or are under fire from his Lifeform Disintegration Ray (R).
Viktor
[No information gathered about this match up yet.]
Xerath
Similar to the Vel'Koz match up. Sidestepping will be important To avoid losing the lane. A clutch Cutthroat can avoid any damage and crowd control effects from his kit.
If he focuses on using Rite of the Arcane (R) leap onto him and kill him. His focus was obviously somewhere else and died for it.
Ziggs
Very Similar to Vel'Koz and Xerath. Sidestep his Bouncing Bombs (Q) and Cutthroat his Satchel Charge (E). His E is also on a long cooldown so use that window to your advantage.
Yasuo
He will be annoying since he can dip in and out in the lane to harass and disengage using his Sweeping Blade (E). Cutthroat him when he uses Wind Wall (W) or circle around his wall until he can get a clear shot with your Rake. You don't want to use Rake too soon as you could lose trades when it gets blocked. If you know you will get knocked up from his Steel Tempest (Q), immediately use Shadow Assault to prevent him from using Last Breath (R). Fun thing to note is that your Shadow Assault's blade retraction will still do damage if half of the first set of blades are lost due to being blocked by Wind Wall.
Zed
This is the Matchup that everyone argues about whether who's the better assassin. When laning, avoid being his by his Razor Shuriken (Q). When he uses his Living Shadow (W) to either harass or waveclear, it'll be on a long cooldown so you can get into melee and skirmish until you want to back off. Use Shadow Assault when he engages you with Death Mark (R). Stay in stealth for 2 of the 2.5 seconds. Move around while you have the movement speed increase to throw off his aiming for multiple Qs. If he either goes back to his shadows cutthroat onto him. If not, rake and W him. Use Cutthroat to chase if he flashes/shadows out. Keep track of his ultimate's shadow because that's his back door out. Then Cutthroat to him immediately.
Cheat the 1v1's by purchasing a Quicksilver Sash. But only when you have you core completed and have a huge advantage.
Kog'Maw
Do you see a similarity between these 5 champions? They are all artillery mages, meaning their damage has to come from ranging you down. If this range is closed it becomes harder for them to damage you. Now I'm not saying that once you blink in that they'll 100% miss every skill shot. It just means that them disengaging becomes their primary objective and their damage during this time frame, targeted to either you or your teammates, is significantly reduced until they're free from their threat which is you, the Talon player.
Pros + Very high mobility of 350 MS. One of the second highest base MS of all champions. + Hyper quick burst. Can 100-0 his target in less than 1 second. Fact. + Ultra low cooldown on Shadow Assault. + Avalanches in power when given a lead. Cons - Very prone when Shadow Assault is on cooldown. - Doesn't have the luxury of an all-range gap closer/escape. (ie: Leap, Leap Strike, Shunpo, Living Shadow, Distortion, etc.) - Very weak laning phase in terms of farming and sustain. Rake's base damage at early ranks isn't suitable for farming minions. Talon is very fragile in terms of defensive stats. - Requires items in order to have his damage feel relevant.
The 8x Greater Mark of Armor Penetration are used to achieve a flat and clean amount 10 Armor Penetration. This negates the enemy's armor seals in lane and will serve as a huge advantage to armor stackers in the mid game. The 1x Greater Mark of Attack Damage is an extra bonus towards last hitting.
Note: Talon's early game is already weak and there's not much of a point to try and remedy by running ONLY attack damage runes. The real problem for Talon is when his targets start gaining armor or begins to fall behind. So this build's intent is to keep his already weak laning phase and instead give him a more secure mid-late game by having bonus armor penetration through runes which will act as a fail safe and will also increase the cost efficiency of all bonus attack damage stats gained through items built in game.
The 9x Greater Seal of Scaling Health will be used to help counteract additive damage from your enemy mid laner, especially in the late game since we won't be using any armor or magic resist in this build. Instead rely on your ability to sidestep and dodge enemy skills and to stay in a safe range from champions with point-click abilities.
The 9x Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction will be used in conjunction with the 2 points from the Sorcery Mastery in the Offensive Tree. This grants Talon 10% CDR at the start of the game. Note: My old build used scaling CDR glyphs with 4 points in Sorcery Mastery to achieve 30% CDR by level 18 without having Black Cleaver in the build. But with the new Black Cleaver out, this current build can allow you to achieve 40% CDR before level 18.
And finally the 3x Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage is used for better last hitting, harassing, ability scaling. The value of these runes are also buffed by Greater Mark of Armor Penetration.
Masteries Rationale
Masteries Rationale
A lot of the points put in the offensive tree should be self explanatory. However I will go over some one my choices in detail.
Choosing Butcher will Help Talon last hit minions in melee range since the runes set up in this guide don't give a large amount of initial attack damage.
Taking Feast will allow Talon to stay in lane without having to chug all 3 of his Crystalline Flasks. This affect also stack additively on minion kill. Tip: It can come in handy at a point in game when you will need to life steal or kill minions to save your life from Ignite or other damage over time abilities. You can literally " Rake" in much needed Health from a nearby minion wave while clinging on for dear life. :^D
I take Dangerous Game for when I am under pressure of possibly dying to my enemy's Ignite. It also allows some sustain after neutralizing your target in teamfights and skirmishes. Note: It can be used to deny your enemy bounty gold when you're on a massive killing spree. You're playing Talon, you better be on a killing spree.
3 points into Devastating Strikes is a must. You'll need all the armor penetration you can get to counteract the targets that are stacking armor.
Take both Spell Weaving and Blade Weaving . This will amplify all the damage you unload on your target. Both masteries can be easily maxed out with various combos and Talon's kit. Note: That every tick of the bleeding portion from Noxian Diplomacy will grant stacks for Spell Weaving and keep it maxed for the duration of the bleed.
Only 1 point is allocated into Warlord because your core build will not grant much bonus attack damage. In the mid game your core build will return a small amount from this specific mastery.
