His high burst and invisibility make him strong against Yi. Before level 6, you can handle him more easily. Avoid isolation and use W to reduce his Q damage.
Elise
Her untargetability and stun make her tough to handle as Yi. Try to avoid her stun, build some magic resist and tenacity, or use QSS if necessary.
Rek'Sai
Her high burst, mobility, and nearly unavoidable knockup make her a strong counter to Yi. Avoid fighting her unless you're quite ahead.
Zac
He has strong hard CC that can lock you down for a while, preventing you from using W to avoid getting bursted, but you can escape from him and also dodge some of his abilities on reaction.
Evelynn
Invade her pre-level 6, as she’s weakest then. After level 6, her charm can burst you, and you may not have enough time to counter her damage unless you build magic resist, tenacity, or use QSS.
Nocturne
Avoid using your Q while he's casting his fear. Either use it immediately before or after his fear. You can however reduce some of his fear duration by Q'ing right before his cast animation would end, if that is your priority.
Gragas
You can dodge his ult with your Q on reaction, but if he lands his Bodyslam, he can combo you and deal significant damage. His low cooldowns later make him annoying to deal with as Yi. Engage after he’s used his E.
Udyr
He's hard to catch and escape due to his high movement speed and point-and-click stun, which allows him to kite you. Avoid fighting him unless you're quite ahead.
Rammus
Generally, he's not hard to beat—just wait out his W and you can kill him afterwards. You can also still disengage after his taunt, as he won't have enough damage to kill you but if other champs are involved, his taunt can be very dangerous unless you build QSS or tenacity.
Rengar
He has high burst, but you can use your W to block all of his abilities. His mobility in bushes and his stun can help him outplay or escape from you.
Shaco
A good Shaco can be tricky, but his clone usually takes noticeable more damage. Be aware of his traps and destroy them for a better chance to beat him.
Warwick
Avoid him or get QSS. Try to dodge his E or R with your Q and stay close to your team.
Master Yi
When facing another Yi, try to Q him first for an advantage. If he Q's first, use your W to block some of the damage. Hourglass or Guardian Angel can help you win by wasting his E and R or reducing his Q damage. Use Hourglass immediately after he Q's you.
Fiddlesticks
Once you're level 6, don’t ult until he’s used his fear, or he'll send you far away, as you cannot get slowed while you're in your R, which meanwhile also could expire. Once you have QSS, he should be much easier to deal with.
Hecarim
If not Fed you beat him. Dodge his E or R with your Q.
Graves
His Smoke Screen is annoying, and he has a lot of damage, but since he has no CC, you can dodge most of his abilities or negate his damage with your W.
Jarvan IV
If he misses the knockup, you should win. You can dodge his ult damage or escape it by Q'ing nearby minions or champions. Make sure to Q after his dash animation starts to avoid getting clipped by the knockup.
Sejuani
Her annoying CC gives her enough time for backup. Try to dodge her ult with your Q.
Kayn
Use W when he ults you to preserve your ult and E duration. Blue Kayn's damage can be mitigated with Meditate, but if he's very ahead, it might be hard to react. You can dodge his abilities with your Q. Red Kayn becomes harder to deal with later in the game—avoid his knockup or engage after he’s used his ult.
Viego
Dodge his stun or dodge/follow his R with your Q. He can deal a lot of damage, but you scale better, so you’ll have the advantage later. Also, try to prevent him from getting takedowns, or he’ll heal a lot.
Skarner
Avoid him before having some items and get Qss in the worst Case.
Vi
Dodge her Q with your high mobility. Try to burst her and use your Q before she ults. Be cautious of backup, as she can easily set you up.
Volibear
Avoid 1v1s early, as he has good damage and sustain, making him hard to kill. However, later on, you can easily destroy him.
Xin Zhao
He has a strong early game, so try to fight him after you’ve got a few more items.
Lee Sin
Despite constantly kicking you around, he’s easy to beat. You can dodge his second Q with your own, and you outscale him, while being able to reduce the damage of all his abilities with your W.
Amumu
Dodge his Q with yours or try to predict his ult.
Bel'Veth
"She has a lot of dashes, which can be annoying, but you can keep up with her. She needs to stay close to fight you, where you should win since her only CC is avoidable, and you outscale her in DPS as Yi.
Trundle
He has a strong early game, but there’s nothing to dodge in his kit. Once you get some items, you’ll easily destroy him.
Briar
Can be annoying to deal with if she gets ahead as she has good damage and can heal alot but if you have enough items she should not be a problem.
Nunu & Willump
You can dodge his ult or reduce its damage with your W. If he tries to escape, cancel his big snowball by using your Q on him. If he tries to engage on you with his snowball you can Q behind him to avoid the snowball.
Shyvana
She can be strong and tanky, but she has no real CC or proper DPS to stop you. However, be aware that she can boost her movement speed which might make you waste your R.
Diana
You can beat her in most situations if she’s not fed and doesn’t have Hourglass. You can meditate through her burst or simply dodge her ult with your Q.
Lillia
She abuses Hourglass and has high mobility, making her hard to catch and able to kite you. Her ult has long CC, but you can burst her quickly. Time your Q well to bait or dodge her own Q, giving you more time to deal damage before her stun activates.
Nidalee
Avoid her spears and remember she’s ranged—if you don’t let her kite you, she’s an easy fight. If she gets ahead or builds Hourglass, be more cautious when engaging, as her mobility and healing can help her stall out fights.
Kindred
Remember she’s ranged—if you don’t let her kite you, she’s an easy fight. Save your Q for after her ult ends, and you should win most of the time in almost any situation.
Ivern
He's easy to beat throughout the game, but watch out for his counter-jungling. Dodge his Q or ult knockup with your Q—you can still use W while being hit by his Q.
Karthus
He can’t slow you during your R, you can dodge his ult with Q, and he has no mobility, hard CC, or tankiness. You can also negate all his damage with W, making him one of the easiest matchups for Yi.

You can try to push his wave in at the start and take a small trade when he does not have his other abilities available yet, to get him lower on HP in order to look for a early kill but outside of that he outtrades you, is hard to catch, and has unavoidable hard CC. Play safe, farm up, wait for ganks, try to avoid him.
Pantheon
He outtrades you unless you dodge his point-and-click stun with Q — which isn't easy. When his passive is stacked, try to reduce or dodge his next hit with W or Q. He wins most 1v1s early due to his kit, so play safe and wait until you outscale him with at least two completed items.
Renekton
You can use Q into W to bait out his stun while reducing its damage, or stand near minions / place a ward so he might target them instead during your Q. Always be mindful of your positioning — he has the advantage in most trades and is hard to catch, especially post-6 when he becomes tankier and deals more damage.
I like to trade by stacking my passive on minions, using Double Strike on him (sometimes with a W auto reset), then disengaging through minions to avoid retaliation. Ideally, your Q bounce hits him for extra poke. If he’s missing ult, stun, or dash, and you have enough HP and damage, that’s your best chance to engage.
Jax
Dodge his E with your Q. To get a better feel for it, walk away after he casts it — this can reveal whether he cancels it early. If dodging is difficult, use W to reduce the damage. When he jumps on you, use W to block his empowered auto. You can either hold it or cancel it after the hit, depending on whether you want to fight back or just buy time for your team.
Camille
Right now, there’s not much you can do in this matchup — she deals too much true damage on a low cooldown. You outscale her eventually, but she scales hard too, so fighting her is tough. Best to avoid her for now. The only reason she’s not ranked higher is because she isn’t mechanically difficult — just overtuned, and Riot hasn’t properly balanced her in years.
Riven
Early game, she’s squishy with high cooldowns — if she uses abilities to farm or misses them, you can punish her. After level 6, she gets more range, burst, and mobility, making the matchup harder. In the end, it comes down to player skill — so show the bunny who’s boss.
Kled
He trades easily and you can’t effectively fight back, dodge, or reduce his damage. His second-life passive makes early fights hard to win, so play safe and wait until you have 1–2 items.
Aatrox
If there’s no other way, use your Q to dodge his 3rd Q or tap W to reduce its damage — it’s the strongest part of his kit. Use movement to avoid the rest. You’ll be fine as you get more items.
Volibear
Play safe until you have 1–2 items, then you can run him down. You can dodge his stun with Q, but it’s tricky. Use movement or W to avoid or reduce the rest of his damage.
Fiora
She can kite and outtrade you well due to her kit, so play it safe early on. You can sometimes bait her W by using your Q on nearby minions, but it depends on the player’s experience. After level 6, save your Q until she tries to parry after getting low HP — using it too early lets her block all damage. If she ults, try to avoid her hitting all 4 vitals by staying close to a wall. Wait for some items before taking risks, as once you’re ahead, you should win most of the time.
Sett
Wait for your items and you’ll be fine. He outtrades you early, but you can dodge a lot of his abilities, so play safe. In matchups like this, I stack my passive on minions, use Double Strike on the enemy, and possibly a W auto reset before disengaging to keep my distance. Ideally, your Q bounce hits him for extra damage. Avoid fighting near ally minions, as he cant combo you there. If he pulls you without stunning, you can dodge his true damage fist slam with your Q.
Wukong
Early on, he can win trades due to his kit, but you can negate a lot of damage with your W. After level 6, it becomes tough to trade or kill him since he gains two knockups, which can quickly take you down. Consider getting Oracle's Lens to track him better.
Darius
A good Darius will start with W, so you’ll have to gamble if you want early kills. If he starts with Q, you can avoid the damage and healing by using your Q. After that, he can beat you unless he misses his abilities or cancels his autoattacks. I trade by stacking my passive on minions, using Double Strike on him, and possibly a W auto reset before disengaging onto minions to keep distance. Ideally, your Q bounce hits him for extra damage. After level 6, focus on predicting his grab or dodging his Q. Keep in mind, if you don’t have enough damage to kill him or get him very low before he gets 5 stacks on you, his R will deal true damage that you can’t mitigate.
Urgot
Laning phase is tough as he outtrades you, but his dash CC is reactable. Once you get some items, you should win easily unless he’s ahead.
Tryndamere
You can win level 1-2, but it depends on RNG since he has crit chance. He has no mana, so he can easily out-sustain you in lane, making poking trades pointless. Either play aggressively or focus on farming. After level 6, Tryndamere can be tough to deal with, so avoid fighting if you're behind. If he doesn’t have Ignite, I like to max my W and play under tower, building tank items like Frozen Heart and Randuin’s if the rest of his team comp allows it.
Quinn
This was a tough matchup in the past, but not anymore! Thanks to the Q buff, Yi can now reappear where he chooses, allowing you to Q behind Quinn and stay on her, making it harder for her to kite. You may need to run Hail of Blades and build lethality or crit items for maximum damage, as on-hit won't provide enough burst. Q her, stay behind while attacking, and if she uses her jump, press and hold W. If you don’t have W, back off after you can't get more damage. If you get a kill this way, just repeat, and she won’t be able to counter it. However, if she gets ahead, this won't work anymore since she’ll out-DPS you.
Gnar
Ranged matchups are never easy, but they’re also not impossible to beat. Play safer to avoid his poke and stay behind minions. You can win early, but he has the range advantage and fast CC in his big form, so be cautious. Avoid fighting if you can’t get a lead, and look for all-ins in his small form. If you Q him in small form, always reappear in front of him; otherwise, he can jump over you which slows you and allows him to trade back heavily.
Jayce
Similar to Quinn, run Hail of Blades with crit or lethality. Engage him and reappear behind him while attacking until he knocks you back. If he doesn’t reposition, walk back up to him. If he keeps the knockback, use W on whatever he tries next and retreat to your minion wave.
Teemo
"Laning against him can be annoying, but after some items, you should win. Use your W if you miss dodging his blind with Q. Go for burst builds, as the longer the fight lasts, the harder it gets. Engage with Q, then get in as many auto attacks as you can before he blinds you. Use W while blinded, and either walk back to your tower or keep engaging. Once you buy QSS, it’s basically game over for him unless he builds Zhonya’s Hourglass.
Ambessa
Go for short trades and try to predict her abilities, later on you just run her over.
Shen
This is a farming lane. He has more range and better trade potential than you. His laning phase is stronger since he can avoid your damage for a few seconds, but after some items, you should be fine.
Poppy
She has good poke, so avoid unnecessary harassment and stay away from walls to prevent getting stunned. After some items, you should beat her easily.
Gangplank
You can win level 1-2, but if he plays safe, he can trade with you, and you won’t be able to do much about it. If that happens, get another point in W to sustain better in lane. You can avoid some of his poke with Q, but it pushes the wave and drains your mana quickly. Instead, tap W whenever he tries to harass. Avoid or attack his barrels with Q or W if you can time it right. Note that your Double Strike counts as only one hit on his barrels.
Heimerdinger
Just farm, don’t fight. Put more points in W to sustain if he pokes you under your turret. It’s winnable, but not worth the effort and risk since he can wait for your Q, stun you, and let his turrets finish you off while staying at a safe distance.
Ornn
Laning against him can be annoying, but after some items, you’ll win easily. Dodge his R with your Q after level 6 and avoid knockups with positioning or Q. Use movement to dodge other abilities.
Singed
Laning can be annoying. You can get kills early, but he can kite you easily, so focus on farming instead.
Yorick
Avoid getting hit by his soul minion; if he misses it, you can trade. You can reduce the damage of his shovel with your W, and after some items, you can easily kill him.
K'Sante
Pretty even but you beat him after some items.
Garen
Similar to Mundo, but he trades better. Play safe, farm, and fight him after some items. This champion can be annoying duo to his healing and having no mana, so avoid wasting time unless you’re sure you can kill him.
Cho'Gath
You win level 1, but it gets harder until you have items. You beat a tank Cho'Gath easily after some items, but an AP Cho can be difficult depending on the player. If he times his abilities well, you won’t be able to trade due to his silence and damage. Dodge his knockup and save your Q for that, it’s very reactable. Don't allow him to hit the minions if possible as he will be able to heal up that way.
Olaf
Avoid his axes and watch out for his early game later on you out-DPS him.
Malphite
Whenever he tries to poke with his Q, just tap W to negate his damage. After level 6, he can’t slow your AS while you’re using R, making it easier compared to other auto-attack champs. Keep an eye on your HP; if you get low, avoid fights as his ult is hard to react to at close range. After some items, you should have no problems.
Rumble
He has no CC but can deal a lot of damage. After some items, you should beat him most of the time. Keep in mind he can buy Zhonya's Hourglass, which counters Yi.
Mordekaiser
You win level 1-2. Dodge his abilities with your movement, Q, or negate his Q damage with a W tap—his abilities are very reactable for Yi. You can also dodge his R, but it’s luck-based and unlikely to change the outcome. Focus on dodging his Q or grab depending on your and his HP. After some items, you should be fine. Keep in mind he can buy Zhonya's Hourglass, which counters Yi.
Illaoi
Be careful at level 1 and avoid her grabs later on; that’s the most important thing in this matchup. If she lands it and you don’t have 3 or 4 items, you’ll likely lose. If she misses or you dodge it, you can run her down after some items.
Gwen
Dodge her Q with your Q or by moving. She has no hard CC but can deal a lot of damage if she lands her abilities, so aim to finish your items ASAP to out-DPS her. Keep in mind she can buy Zhonya’s Hourglass, which counters Yi.
Nasus
He gets stronger the longer the game goes, so play aggressively and deny him as much as possible without risking death. After level 6, he can’t slow you if you’re using your R, giving you a huge advantage. Negate his Q damage with your W.
Irelia
You can dodge her stun easily with your Q, or even her ult. The only time to worry is if she has her passive fully stacked. Keep in mind she has a higher attack range, so avoid fighting her near large minion waves, as she can kite you with her dashes. After some items, you out-DPS her.
Kayle
Pre-6, it’s easy to jump on her and run her down, but keep in mind she gets a lot of movement speed boosts, which can help her kite your E. After 6, save your Q and engage with Flash until she ults. When she ults, hold your W and wait for it to end, then Q her and try to finish her off. She can out-DPS you late game due to her range, so try to sneak up on her through bushes to start the fight from close range.
Sion
If he charges his Q, you can Q behind him to dodge it. If you can’t do that, hold W to negate the damage. If he tries to escape with his ult, Q in front of him to stop him. Watch out for his passive.
Maokai
He has annoying CC that prevents you from damaging him properly. I like to hold onto my Q and just auto-attack him, as that’s the best way to DPS him.
Dr. Mundo
He has no hard CC, so after level 6 and your first item, you should never lose to him unless he’s fed. Bring Ignite against his ult or build anti-heal to counter it.

She can harass you very well in lane, can set you up very easy for ganks, has a point in click hard CC ult and forces you to buy Qss after level 6.
Malzahar
He can harass you very well in lane and forces you to buy Qss after level 6. His ult is point in click and gives him and his team enough time to kill you.
Anivia
Can be very hard to deal with since her passive can revive her which gives her enough time for backup and can leave you at a point where your DPS runs low. She has a stun which she can use when ever you try to engage her to keep her distance while also blocking you with terrain which can be very annoying. However she has no mobility so once she misses her Stun you can go for fights.
Azir
Hard matchup cuz he can trade with you from a distance and deny you from farming. After level 6 you wanna try to dodge his ult which can be a little hard tho.
Zoe
If she misses her sleep you can go for trades/all ins, once you're close up it can depend on luck to avoid it. After 6 dont forget that you can end up at in a bad position if you Q after her ult at the wrong time.
Ahri
She can poke from a distance and has a very annoying CC ability which you need to try to avoid. After she gets level 6 she will have 3 dashes which makes it very difficult to keep up or shut her down so try to to fight when her ult is on CD.
Akali
Outtrades you and can kite you with her movespeed bonus. She can get invisible which counters Yi since you can not do anything but heal up in that time which you can do since reacting to reduce her ult damage with it instead can be hard. After level 6 she has to much mobility to keep up with her while also having more burst than you so try to fight if she either has low hp or CD's.
Ekko
Laning phase is fine but after level 6 he has a 2nd life which makes it hard for you to kill him before your ult runs out. Try to dodge his stun field with your Q after he walked into it.
Orianna
She can harass you very well in lane but her ult is very reactable to dodge.
Vex
You can't really do much other than wait for her to use her passive on the minion waves before trying any trades/fights which is totally up to her to decide by keeping her passive to zone you from farming all the time. She can cancel your W so keep your distance when recovering from poke.
Syndra
She can harass you very well in lane but has no mobility and you can dodge her ult with your Q or meditate the burst.
Aurelion Sol
Has better wave clear and more range so you can't do much unless he wastes his abilities. His ult will knock you back once you try to Q him to get closer or he will just use his Q to stun you and win some distance again.
LeBlanc
Has high mobility and a annoying passive but you can negate alot of her burst with your W, reduce her chain ability CC with your Q or follow her dashes and you can use ignite against her passive.
Viktor
Can harass you very well in lane but has no mobility. If he uses his trap don't Q him right away instead walk into it auto him once or twice cuz his trap has a delay before it activates which you can reset and abuse with your Q.
Cassiopeia
She can harass you very well in lane but is very mana hungry her ult can be dodged by your Q but she can block your Q with her miasma.
Fizz
You can dodge his ult with your Q. Try to force him to use his untargetability before you use yours (unless he hit his ult already).
Galio
After 1 or 2 items you win every 1v1.
Neeko
Skill matchup, you can dodge her ult with your Q, try to avoid her abilities with your movement.
Qiyana
Before her level 6 it's easy after her level 6 get Qss or wait for her to waste her ult. You can try to use W when she goes invisible and spam your Q into her field if you have the feeling that she will ult as soon as she gets visible again to avoid her ult.
Ryze
He has point in click stuff so try to all in him once you have enough items/damage.
Sylas
You can dodge alot of his abilities and you should always win after 1 or 2 items. Try to be consistent and dont let him heal so either go for all ins or leave him be.
Taliyah
Dodge her knockback with your Q.
Talon
Meditate once he uses his ult try to follow his e over walls with your Q.
Twisted Fate
Dodge his yellow card, he has no mobility but can escape with his R since you have no CC to stop him.
Veigar
You can dodge alot of his abilities even his ult, if he uses his stun cage and you try to Q him from inside keep in mind that he can walk back into the cage to stun you. You can also negate his burst with your W.
Akshan
Has a strong early and can disengage so you should not all in him unless he used his spells before. Play safe for the early game and look for fights after level 6. Try to follow his escape or dodge his ult with your Q. You can also avoid his ult by standing behind a turret or behind creeps.
Ziggs
Skill matchup dodge his abilities with your movement and try to safe your Q to follow his knockback ability.
Zed
You can dodge his R with your Q on other targets but it's prefer able to dodge his Q's afterwards instead since the main damage comes from those. You can also try to predict his dashes which are his only ways to escape from you. You might aswell negate some burst with your W since he has no CC to cancel it.
Hwei
His fear is the only thing that can stop you from killing him so if he ever misses it or you avoid it you should always win. Dodge his abilities with your movement.
Yone
Dodge his Q dash which can knock you up and avoid his ult with your high mobility or if he missed his Q before dodge it with your Q. You win pretty easy after a few items.
Vladimir
If he stacks his massive lifesteal Q don't give him the free heal/poke and walk back till it runs out instead. After you have enough damage just run him down. You can negate some damage with your W. This matchup needs a bit experience for it to become easy.
Aurora
Has an annoying laning phase duo to her poke but she can also turn invisible which counters yi. After some items you should be fine regardless.
Naafiri
Get items and run him down.
Corki
Has no CC only a little escape dash after that you just destroy him.
Katarina
Avoid her daggers or use your W to negate some burst, use your Q when she ults to avoid some damage or also use it to follow her E dash.
Yasuo
This can be very easy or very hard depending on the enemy players skill level but once you have some items you should most of the time win pretty easy. Try to avoid his knockup and fight him when there are no minions around for him to dash.
Vel'Koz
Dodge his knock up with your Q it's very reactable after that just destroy him.
Xerath
Has no mobility only a small cc spell which can be dodged either by your Q or your high movementspeed.
Lux
You can dodge all of her abilities or negate their damage with your W. She has no mobility to escape you.
Diana
Dodge her ult with your Q after a few items you run her down if shes not fed.
Kassadin
Has no mobility pre 6 and you deal more damage than him. Only time it can get harder against him is after he gets level 16 with hourglas.
Fast reaction speed– Good timing and reading enemy movement is crucial to unlock Yi's full potential.
Avoid tank items – Yi scales with damage & attack speed allowing flashy solo plays to dominate duels.
Close out games as fast as possible – You will get punished harder in late game due to Yi’s squishiness.

Let’s dive in and Master the Wuju Style!
Master YiPros:
+ Ability Resets + + Strong Splittpush + + Hyper Carry Potential + + High Pentakill Potential + + Strong/Easy Turret Dives + + Tank Shredder thru Wuju Style+ + Highest Base Movement Speed in the Game + + One of the (if not the) Strongest 1v1 Late Game + + High Mobility thru Alpha Strike, Highlander+ + Untargetability thru and Slow Immunity thru + + Different Build Flexibility (Crit, Lethal, OnHit, Offtank) + + Good Jungle Clear and Sustain/Tankiness thru Meditate+
Easy to Learn but Hard to Master
Master YiCons:
- Late Game Issues - - Relies very hard on Items - - No CC and vulnerable against Hard CC - - Weak against Burst, especially AP Types - - If you fall behind, it can be hard to be useful -
No Skillshots but Reaction and Timing is Needed
Too long; didn't read:
Ghost Teleport Ignite Exhaust and Cleanse can all be situationally useful, however Flash,
is often just too strong to pass up on when playing Master Yi, since it offers you alot of options such as being able to close the gap, escape over walls, reposition yourself or avoid skillshots.
Early days Spell choices:
Back when I started jungling with Yi, I used Teleport + Smite. Teleport helped with splitpushing, backdooring, and power farming.
After some changes to it, I switched to Exhaust – it was solid for 1v1 duels against bursty champs.
It had a Low cooldown and was great against fed ADC's in late game teamfights.
Today in Season 15, Teleport can still be an option, but it’s more RNG than value, if you ask me.
Why I moved on from Exhaust aswell:
Exhaust got nerfed – good for Yi, since his attack speed isn’t reduced by it anymore.
I still kept using it out of habit for some time after, but eventually switched to Flash.
Flash simply offers too many things to give up on like: escaping, gapclosing, repositioning or avoiding enemy champion abilities, which makes it one of the best spells to have in the game.
You can bring: ✔️
Ghost– against champs that can kite you. Ignite– against healing, camouflage, invisibility, or untargetability. Exhaust– against champs with heavy burst damage. Cleanse– against champs with unavoidable hard CC.
The higher the threat certain champs pose,
the more likely I am to adjust my summoner spell choice.
That being saied – this comes thru experience!
Play lots of games, and you’ll start noticing patterns.
But Suseri, why take Cleanse if you can buy QSS instead?
Because QSS delays your item power spikes too much.
I only recommend buying QSS if:
• You're quite ahead
• At a later point
• Or you absolutely need it to function in fights.
Cleanse gives you early safety without compromising your build.
Because you’d need to finish the item at some point,
which is not an optimal choice for Master Yi.
Anti-heal items delay your proper power spikes,
while Ignite also deals true damage on top of helping you secure kills & get your resets faster.
So Alpha Strike is your Q Ability, but when do you Max it?
💡 TL;DR ✅ Jungle: Max Q first, it's your main tool for dodging, gap closing, escaping, and dealing damage. 🆚 Lane: Usually Q first, but matchup-dependent.
When❓ Almost in every game you want to max Q first, as it is his key ability offering:
🌀 Short Untargetability (bit longer if all 4 hits land)
⛔ Dodge skills, including even some ultimates
✈️ Follow movement like Flashes, Blinks, Dashes, Blast Plants
⏩ Faster jungle clear (you can take a second point at level 3 for max clear speed)
⚠️ Important Notes
❌ You can't use wards or items during Q
✅ You can't use Flash and TP but all other summoner spells aswell as your E & R during Q
🔍 Grants 600 range vision on bounce – even across terrain, sadly not into bushes
☠️ Damage or CC over time can still hit/kill you in Q, but Tenacity helps reducing the effect of CC's
⏸️ Being in Q now pauses E and R duration
So Wuju Style is your E Ability, but when do you Max it?
💡 TL;DR ✅ Jungle: Always max E second, it increases your damage too, but less so against jungle monsters. 🆚 Lane: Usually second as well, can be maxed sooner vs tanks without burst, mobility, or hard CC.
When❓ Usually right after Q, but can be maxed first in specific situations:
💥 Main scaling damage source, strong AD scaling and true damage on-hit
🧠 Situational E-max possible if you don't need Q for dodging (rarely recommended)
⏱️ Early Q points still important (2–3) since basic attacks can reset its cooldown
🧱 E max decent in lane vs low-threat matchups, but Q max always preferred
⚠️ Important Notes
✅ Scales very well with Attack Damage and Attack Speed – itemization matters!
🎯 E can now be used while in Q
⏳ If E is activated late during Q, you may lose DPS– especially on fewer than 4 targets
🌀 Q damage hits apply E per target – E timing can impact your full burst
So Meditate is your W Ability, but when do you Max it?
💡 TL;DR ✅ Jungle: Always max W last, it's defensive and does not offer any sort of damage or mobility. 🆚 Lane: Usually last, you can put more points when behind, building tanky, or getting poked a lot.
When❓ Max W last, unless specific conditions call for earlier investments:
🛡️ Defensive tool – no damage or mobility increases but it allows you to reset your basic attacks
💚 Early points useful when forced to fight with low escape options (during invades or when low HP)
🚑 Helps sustain in lane when facing poke-heavy matchups
📉 Viable when behind to survive or bait enemies – especially against burst champs without hard CC
❗ Not reliable vs hard CC – W can be easily cancelled and leaves you damageless if maxed
🔁 If you max W,leave Q for last – E is still essential to kill champions from mid-late game
⚠️ Important Notes
💡 Healing scales dynamically – heals more the less HP you currently have
✅ You can use W while rooted
⏸️ W now pauses the duration of your E and R – use it strategically
So Highlander is your R Ability, but when do you Max it?
💡 TL;DR ✅ Always level your R whenever possible – at level 6, 11, and 16. 🆚 Jungle or Lane – doesn't matter, Highlander is a core part of Yi's power spikes.
When❓ Every time it's available! Never skip R day – else even scuttle crabs might escape 😉
⚡ Grants massive movement & attack speed
🧊 Immunity to slows – great for sticking to targets
🔁 Reduces cooldowns of Q, W & E by 70% on takedown
💥 Great engage, disengage, or clean-up tool – timing is everything
⚠️ Important Notes
✅ Can now be activated during your Q
⏸️ R duration is paused while in Q – great for extended fights
Advanced Kit Tips and Tricks
💡 Hidden Mechanics & Pro Tips in Yi's Kit
In this chapter you'll find some lesser-known but super helpful tips about Yi's abilities you shouldn't miss! Originally I wanted to make a video series with voiceovers and examples... but let’s be honest – time is precious and I’m lazy 😅 So here’s the text version – still packed with value!
Passive: Double Strike • Pre-stack your passive before fights for max DPS.
• Second strike prioritizes nearest target to Yi – position wisely when CS'ing!
• Passive can expire and cancel your next basic attack – annoying, but good to know.
• Works on traps (Jhin/Nida/Teemo/Shaco), not on GP barrels.
• Second hit can crit structures (turrets/inhibs/nexus).
• If uninterrupted, Yi can chain Double Strikes endlessly – unless second hit is wasted (target dies).
Q Ability: Alpha Strike
• Auto-attack jungle camps before Q – prevents some HP loss.
• Yi can still die during Q from DoTs or chain CC – it's dumb but real.
• Use Q late vs delayed hard CC (Morgana R/Karma W/Leblanc E) to reduce their durations.
• Each Q strike prioritizes the closest target from the last bounce.
• Bait enemies: Q onto a dying unit = safe reposition on start location.
• Q can dodge turret shots when timed correctly.
• Q works even after being airborne, if you use QSS (yes, even dragon knockbacks!).
• Jump over walls with Q to escape or optimize farming paths.
• Enemies in Zhonya won’t take Q damage – but Q still goes on cooldown.
• Q gives assists if started before target dies (must bounce once).
• Q follow range max: ~2000 units – don’t overestimate it.
• Q reveals fog targets (not invisible ones) if close (not into brushes).
• Yi can track invisible enemies if they go stealth during Q.
• After Q'ing Scuttle Crabs, auto attacking won't work unless you right-click them.
• Clicking out-of-range target with Q = chase until vision lost.
• Don’t worry – ally buffs/heals won’t be dodged by Q, unless it's a "skillshot".
• Untargetables can block Q – some partial hits still land.
• Enemys out of vision can be caught off guard, if you spam Q on the right location.
• After a Q, enemies can flash out of your auto range – happens rarely.
• Short Q's on champs under their turrets (if the target dies mid bounce) might drop aggro.
• If your primary target dies mid Q animation, you'll reaper on the initial cast location.
• This also counts towards champions with revive mechanics (Kog, Sion etc.).
E Ability: Wuju Style
• Activate E with Double Strike for max true damage utilization.
• Using E during W cancels W – avoid accidental cancels.
• Trick: Right before E ends, pop W → extra E + Double Strike (tight timing!).
• On some skins your E can be visually confirmed easier, leading to disadvantages.
W Ability: Meditate
• Basic Attack-reset - by tapping W into rightclick after your attack animation.
• W into rightclick directly after the first hit of Double Strike = faster DPS/Burst.
• W’s damage reduction is lowered vs turrets.
• Heal faster in base with W – but risky if enemies are nearby as it'll be on CD.
• W scales with AP – Hourglass isn’t totally troll 😄.
• Channeling W builds Double Strike stacks.
• W pauses E/R duration – great for buff extension or to plan your next move.
• Bug: W on Skarner portals has visual glitches.
• Spamming W during Q might trigger it going on CD.
• Easter Egg: You can press W after your last attack on the nexus 😎.
R Ability: Highlander
• No movement speed slows, no attack speed slows.
• Can’t be grounded - Singed will pop out his eyes 👀.
• Kills/assists reset none ultimate cooldowns instantly by 70% once R is leveled.
• Multiple resets = even faster CD resets (based on missing CD%).
• Using R cancels W channel - be careful or smooth.
• Yi can't be slowed, but that also means fears will make him run away faster.
Special Interactions & Fun Facts
• Viktor trap CC can be avoided or delayed with a well-timed Q.
• Camille R cancels Meditate.
• Morgana Q doesn’t block Yi’s W/E/R access.
• Dieing with Guardian Angel in Alpha = revive at Q cast location.
• Dieing with GA on a W tap = revive in meditating pose 😄.
• Blinded auto attacks don’t refund Q CD (no damage = no CD reset).
• Yi’s dance speed scales with MS – except on his legendary skins.
• Two Yis Q each other = “skin advantage?” I have no idea 🤷♂️.
• Enemy Tahm can eat you during W, but ally Tahm can't (anti-troll).
• W too late won’t pause E/R – time it properly.
• Flash → while in Q allows quick escapes, even greater over walls (untrackable).
• Seraphine’s 2nd E won’t root you during R – no slow = no root.
The following champions are worth banning when playing Master Yi: FiddlesticksPoint-and-click fear with absurd duration – a nightmare if your Q is down. RakanExtremely disruptive engages – mainly because of his R combo. LeonaTons of CC – can lock you down and does not die. KennenAP burst, AoE stun, and high mobility – deadly in teamfights. AniviaAP burst with hard CC and a frustrating passive – very hard to stick to her. LuluPolymorph, knock-up, ult – removes your agency entirely. PantheonExplosive AD burst, CC, and invulnerability – not a fair duel. RivenInsane mobility, CC, and burst – she thrives in chaotic duels. GragasAP burst with constant disruption – hard to engage or disengage safely.
Become a legend Improved attacks and sustain damage.Good|Okay|Bad Keystones: Takes too long to stack and does not give you much even if it's stacked Gives you a small boost after 3 attacks but it's not enough to be considered optimal in all situations You can't really kite people as Yi since you want to engage and kill them quickly so this rune takes an L Heroism: This saved me countless times from deaths Considerable for Lane Yi Considerable for Lane Yi Legend: Helps with getting your Passive more often, more AA's/E AA's and faster Q resets Can't get good use out of it since the Q haste change for yi It is okay but you just cannot give up on attack speed to get this Combat: The idea is not to deal alot of damage with one of those runes but which rune has the most potential to get you a kill Considerable Considerable
Runes 2/3
Hunt and eliminate prey Burst damage and target Access.Good|Okay|Bad Free Damage after a Q Quite some OOC MS which helps with catching up or escaping but no use outside of that Your Ult CD is not that High but it still can be very useful to have your Ult up at any given moment Free AD + not hard to geather the Stacks Is okay and gets really good if you can start to snowball the game Free AD + Vision You have no CC in your Kit and red buff would be your only way to apply this Good for Support Yi at the best Useless in the Jungle Not worth Outwit mere mortals, Creative tools and rule bending.Good|Okay|Bad Considerable for Support Yi Good if you can snowball Sounds ok Considerable for Lane Yi Considerable for Lane Yi With the changes to Yi's Q and haste this is less attractive Not worth since you get enough MS from other sources Again haste problem with Yi's Q
Runes 3/3
Live forever Durability and crowd control.Good|Okay|Bad Helps against melee Champs in Lane Helps against Poke in Lane If you are going to get CC'ed you gonna die anyways probably It's okay but it's nothing crazy It's good and can be very good if you aim for a build with alot of HP Free stats are always Nice This is not alot and won't really help you Yi has no CC Kinda useless Unleash destruction Empowered abilities and resource Manipulation.Good|Okay|Bad It's good for the early game Free AD stats which scale with Q, E, Passive and Autoattacks, this is better for longer Games Faster Scuttle Crab clears, could help with escaping or chasing at the River Could be somewhat useful against full AP comps or in Lane against AP Burst Helps with Mana issues, but is not needed You can get a better effect on other Runes Sounds good on the paper, in reality it's not 24 AD at LvL 18 but only if above 70% HP Does not help you in the Jungle
