This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Ahri most likely wins. Although you are a magic absorbing colossus, Ahri is way more mobile than you, She'll play super safe, and defending your carries will be hard, as she will most likely always be outside your taunt range, and can throw spells from afar. The only way to win here is to catch her with an E, if you have a teammate and land an E, you can cc her long enough to kill. You cannot win a 1v1, She'll always escape, so roam as much as possible, you may not lose lane, but you won't win it either, so win someone elses lane
Anivia
This lane is certainly winnable, as long as anivia does not have good reaction time, you should be able to win, be wary though, as Anivia wall will inturrupt your E, also she can double tap Q and get a stun on you before you land your punch, galio's E is not uninterruptable, so if you can catch her off guard, you are sure to win, she has 0 mobility. Late game if you get MR, you should shred her as your Q does percent health, and anivia builds ROA.
Annie
Annie is an easy lane, build MR though. Annie stun is not reliable enough for her to cancel your E, only go in when her stun is down, if you do this every time, you win the trade, even if she gets her stun after you land your E, aftershock wins you the trade.
Aurelion Sol
Aurelion Soul is a decent match up, However, if you E, you have to commit. Getting in melee range with your E makes it so a-sol is completely useless when fighting you, however, if you miss your E/disengage, he will retaliate with a never ending star spree kite. Land your E
Azir
Azir is a pretty hard match up, but not un-winable, his soldiers HURT a lot, but when you get your W, it should ease the pain, the passive shield absorbs some of the soldier damage. TAUNT RIGHT AWAY, if you give him any chance to do anything while hes on the ground, he will surely soldier shuffle out of range. This wont be easy, but you can still win
Brand
Personally, I cannot fight brands, i hate them so much, they have such annoying range and spells. Galio does not perform well against brand, Brand is just overall broken, you ulting near a brand just gives him another champion to bounce too.
Cassiopeia
I personally have never fought this lane, but I feel Cassiopeia is a big counter to galio, her Miasma counters your E and R, the big boy engage. Her poison also shreds through your passive shield, and while your taunt is going, you're still dying to poison so she's sort of uneffected.
Cho'Gath
Cho'gath is an easy-ish match up. As long as you engage first, you win. If he lands a Q on you, or silence, you cant do much, however, you effectively win trades, E, W, keep him in your Q as long as possible, it shreds HP (%hp scaling) which is what cho builds/gets from his passive. However, if you do not constantly poke or go in, his passive could undo everything you've done, and then you're back to square one. Late game, your items will SHRED his HP, easily.
Corki
Corki qualfies as a mid laner to MOBA fire, You should win this, Corki is a squishy Marksmen, E W Q combo, rinse and repeat, you can walk away safely knowing aftershock makes marksmen cry. Although he might play super safe, so be wary, missing galio E spells Doom
Diana
Diana qualfies as a mid laner too! Pre 6, shes just another minion, push her around, a REALLY good diana can W you before you land your E, but taunt, and you win trade (Aftershock baby). Late game, be wary, when she ults on your carry, its important to be their to land that instant taunt into free knock up. W YOUR CARRY IMMEDIATLY WHEN SHE ULTS, DONT GIVE HER TIME, THEN E WHILE SHES TAUNTED, DONT GIVE HER TIME
Ekko
Ekko can dodge your E with his E, More importantly, in teamfights, ekko can W, where you're landing, E out of range, auto back into range, and activate his W, so hes bad news.
Fizz
Fizz is an easy match up, you have to change your play-style though, W first, if you don't land that (he dodges with E) then you have a free knock up from E. You're also super tanky, so you'll never be bursted by this fish
Galio
**PLAY DRAFT YOU SILLY SUMMONER**
Whoever engages first wins, Aftershock blocks the others damage
Karthus
Literally a FREE lane, his W does not stop your E at all, and you can always W for damage reduction blocking his Ult, which is cheese.
Kassadin
Kassadin is an annoying lane, he cannot beat you, but he can annoy you. Pre-6 easiest lane ever, however after 6, the guy just jumps around like a madman, catching him will be task, not impossible, just aggrovating
Katarina
Easy Peasy, Many melee match ups are easy, but this one is a piece of cake, Katarina doesn't stand a chance against you. What is she gonna do? Engage with E? Nice job shunpo-ing right into an easy taunt. Careful for your carry tho, they aren't as tanky as you. But Katarinas ult is going to be easy to cancel, so dont worry too much.
LeBlanc
Galio not smart, galio only crush, galio cant tell which real which not. :(
(Personally, i feel as if Leblanc is an annoying match up. I can't fight her, but this lane isnt impossible, i've beaten her before, the trick is finding the right clone, i always get the wrong one :c)
Lissandra
Lissandra is not a hard match up. Shes going to spam that Q and poke the **** out of you. However, once you land that E, you win the trade. Lissandra will try to use her claw move to dash out, but taunt her while her claw is moving, that way, it keeps her cc'd long enough for her to not move, and if she somehow does teleport (ex. re-cast early) the taunt sometimes goes through, and she walks back to you.
Lux
Snare does not stop your E, feel free to soar through the air and JUSTICE PUNCH THIS DEMACIAN BACK TO HER HOME. Also you can W to damage reduce her ulti if she does snare you before you E. Build MR for best results
Malzahar
What an annoyance. Proc spell shield with Q, dodge his Q. Beat him down, he isnt mobile at all, however watch out for his ult, it will shred you early, but once you get MR, this man is dead.
Orianna
Orianna is pretty strong. The ultimate weapon for an E-girl. Shes going to spam that ball around 24/7, be careful. However since shes kinda not mobile, you can do your combo and win, just be careful, her passive makes her autos hurt, so that taunt is only for keeping her in place.
Ryze
Again, that point and click root wont stop your E while you're in the air, however he can snare before you E. Thats fine though, build MR and Merc treds, and you'll be outta that snare faster than you can say demacia, then Ryze is in for a good 'ol fashion demacian throwdown
Swain
Swain is pretty strong, you may shred him with your Q, but he just heals it all back, your best bet is late game where you have morelloes, however early games a b*tch, this guy is hella annoying, and hella tanky, you dont win trades, but if you play safe, he wont win either.
Syndra
If you can dodge Syndra stun, you should be fine, again, no mobility. This all depends on if Syndra saves her scatter the weak to push you away, instead of stunning. But its fine, you can always W her ult for that sweet sweet damage reduction (BUILD MR)
Talon
Easy match up, an melee character who is designed to go into melee range to fight? Oh it almost sounds too easy. Just remember, this annoying guy can parkour his way out of any fight, so he cant kill you, but you can definitely kill him. All he can do is run.
Twisted Fate
This is the one time you change anything of this build, TAKE CLEANSE INSTEAD OF IGNI, this guy should be no problem if you have cleanse. Your ult is half his ulti's range. If you see him walk out of lane, HES GOING TO ULT, FOLLOW HIM, if you cannot find him/cancel him before he ults away, find what lane he went to/person he teleported to, ult that person.
Veigar
Meh. Not the hardest match up, not the easiest, his cage interrupts your E, and his ult does percent health damage, which is bad, but if you engage on him first, you win, just don't miss your E. Again you can W for the damage reduction on his R, but you have to have good reaction time.
Vel'Koz
No mobility champion, two things you have to watch out for. 1) his true damage ulti/passive, 2) if hes 200 iq, he can anticipate your E, and he can E in the middle of your E and knock you up.
Viktor
Vladimir
Sorry, i always ban, so I don't know this match up.
Xerath
Xerath's stun is pretty strong, it will cancel your justice punch, if Xerath gets ahead, he can clear your wave and poke you down along with his minions. Don't let him get ahead.
Yasuo
Melee, AND he dashes into you? sounds to me like someone is taunting you, taunt him back, and beat this wanna be samurai.
Zed
Rush Seekers armguard, and ninja tabi's. Zed isn't too hard, when he ult's you, just charge your W, and as soon as zed exits, TAUNT HIM. GG
Zoe
Dodge her sleep, easy win baby. Rinse and repeat combo.
As of making this guide, I'm Gold 3, with a level 7 mastery on Galio. I consider myself quite good at Galio, and at Macro gameplay. Galio is a Team fighter, so keep that in mind. I made this guide because looking at the other galio guides, their builds aren't as good, nor their keystones (I mean who takes electrocute on a tank?). Anywho, if you are familiar with LL Justice, probably the best Galio player, im basing this off his match history, and the words of my high Platinum friend. The Protobelt Lichbane Combo you see here is actually quite fantastic, and way better than my previous build of ROA. ROA takes too long as a powerspike, and Protobelt is just better, ROA is good in the long run, but come on, last time I had a 40 minute ranked game it was in silver.
The Early Game
The Early Game
Galio's Early Game is actually quite solid. Rock solid, if you'll pardon the pun. Aftershock will kick in at level two, so what you normally want to be doing is harrassing with Q and farming with it as well. Do NOT Fight level 1, you lose fights, but win at poke. Level 2, NOW you can engage. Hang right next to your casters, if they step past their caster minions, you could POSSIBLY land an E, it's not guranteed, however if they auto a melee minion, thats a guranteed E, while they're in their auto animation, you can wind up your E, and they cannot dodge it, you knock them up with E, aftershock kicks in, Q, you automatically have won the trade, you can continue to auto for more damage, or walk away free as aftershock and bone plating takes any relaiation, and tosses it in the trash
Laning Phase/Ganks
Laning Phase/Ganks
What you want to be doing during laning is farming and poking with your Q, and catch people who overstep with a quick justice punch. If your jungler ganks often, or you're in comms with them, there is no way for you to lose. I duo with a plat shaco, and we do a cheese every game. Ask for Ganks at Level 3, this somewhat applies to the cheese, Galio E, Hold the W, wait for them to land, Taunt, Shaco box,and they're usually dead to the rest of our spells, if not, ignite. So Essentially for ganks, you want to keep them in the same spot for as long as possible. Combo = E > Charge W till they land, or if you know they cannot flash/dash, charge it for max taunt > Q to cancel ending W animation > Auto x100 > If not dead, ignite
HI EVERYBODY
HI EVERYBODY
As Stated Earlier Galio is a TEAM FIGHTER. Your ult is a Glorified Shen Ulti, except instead of a stupid shield, you have STUPID DAMAGE REDUCTION. Also the coolest knock-up and engage in the game. Your ult range is short though, so be mobile. Watch bot lane, bot lane is the key, altho you could roam top, i usually ignore that lane, my top laner is either an idiot who is already 0/5, or my top laner is the guy whos 8/0 at 3 minutes in. However usually when my top is good, my bot lane sucks. In order to prevent that, after clearing a wave i usually walk towards tri, and keep a close eye on bot, if i see trouble, i run down (SAVE ALL YOUR SPELLS, NEVER USE E FOR MOBILITY) Ult the ADC over the support, and it usually ends up in a double kill
Team fights
Team fights
Team fights are a tricky thing, but your main goal (or mine) is to get the biggest AOE possible. When ulting, i usually ult the person who is surrounded by the most enemies. Usually the person surrounded by most enemies is being targeted, or is your carry. ALWAYS DEFEND THE MOST FED PERSON. But if the one whos most fed is away from the enemy team, and is dying, screw the damage reduction in team fights, i want that MONTAGE knock up. This is very helpful if you have an invis champion on your team, that way, the invis character can sneak into the middle of the team, You can ult as Galio, catching the enemy team by suprise. One of two things is going to happen when you ult, either A.) They continue to engage on the carry you have ulted, and you get a 5 man knock up, and win the teamfight by taunting everyone afterwards, or B.) They all turn their attention to the galio ult, and RUN LIKE HELL, which is also a good thing, as they'll disengage, and they've wasted spells. (like flash)

That's the key to winning, if you've roamed bot enough, or had your jungler camp mid enough times, one of them should be super fed. I know what i said earlier, but if its 30-40 minutes in the game, your carry dying is 40 seconds of you having a 4v5, with no damage. save your ult for your carry if they engage on them, its the best disengage in the game. if you do not have ult, or dont have time for the ulti (Ex: enemy rengar ults/ singed running at your team) stand on your ADC, your natural tankiness is a good ward to incoming danger, however if they dont stop, like a singed would, you can charge your W, and keep your adc protected in the taunt tornado. If your W runs out/ they've waited it out, be ready to anticipate, and hit them with a swift justice punch (E). USE EVERYTHING IN YOUR KIT TO *DEFEND YOUR CARRIES**DEFEND YOUR CARRIES**DEFEND YOUR CARRIES*
