Introduction

Hi Summoners!

This is my Guide for Sona the maven of the strings.
She is my favorite Support Champ, because she is very usefull at Teamfights.
I'll show you how I play her and I hope you like it. :p

Pros / Cons

Pros :

+ versatile buffs
+ low cooldowns on skills
+ good damage for a support
+ good mobility
+ easy to get assists using auras
+ decent CC: ultimate and slowing power chord

Cons :

- very squishy in the beginning
- ridiculously low AP ratio on heal
- mana hungry with lower cooldowns
- can't solo or hold lane alone
- extremely vulnerable to CC
- don't expect to get a positive score

Summoner Spells

Flash is a must Spell on a squishy Support like Sona. Flash is the best way to escape. But its also a way to use Crescendo. You can also use it with Exhaust.

So & are a nice combo on Sona.

Clairvoyance is very useful for example to see if the opponents are doing the Baron or the dragon. But actually you needn't Clairvoyance because you have enough wards.

Skills

Power Chord is Sona's Passive. This passive is what makes Sona such an effective support + poking harass. With all 3 abilities, Sona can get into a rhythm easily of always proccing the proper power chord on cooldown. You will need to be tactical when you see that you have your passive up and choose which Power Chord is most suited on the current situation:

if the enemy carry is on your range in the middle of the teamfight, cast
green power chord on him/her to reduce their damage by 20%.
if you are chasing with your team use
purple slowing power chord to cut their escape in short
if you are finishing off someone or want to do as much damage as possible, then use
blue power chord for double damage, or use this for harassing

Q: Hymn of Valor

Sona plays the Hymn of Valor, granting nearby allied champions 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 bonus Damage and Ability Power. Additionally, casting this ability sends out bolts of sound, dealing 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 (+70% of ability power) magic damage to the nearest two enemy champions or monsters.

W: Aria of Perseverance

Sona plays the Aria of Perseverance, granting nearby allied champions 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 / 15 bonus Armor and Magic Resist. Casting this ability sends out healing melodies, healing Sona and a nearby wounded ally for 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 (+25% of ability power). Additionally, both Sona and the healed champion will have the bonuses of this aura doubled for 3 seconds.

E: Song of Celerity

In key team fights, quickly get into position for your Crescendo, in range to heal, move your allies quickly to avoid getting caught, and to catch up to someone running away. Whenever you are running somewhere, swap to the E aura, and if you have the mana, cast E every cooldown for an extra burst of speed.
Max this last!

R: Crescendo

Sona's ultimate is Crescendo which will basically stun enemies for a couple of seconds and deal nice damage. In teamfights it's quite crucial for you to land this spell on multiple enemies or if you're sure you're gonna miss it save it for chasing/escaping. This spell can grant your team kills or ensure that you're team can run away alive.

Runes & Masteries

Sona consumes a lot of mana, so it is important to have Mana-reg.

She is very slow. You don't buy Shoes at the beginning so it's good to have Movement Speed on the Mastery.

As a supporter, it is important to get gold per second, because you let your adc farm.

She has low armor and magic resist so you should go a bit tanky at your runes.

Warding & Jungle Respawns

Sight Ward

sight ward

Basic Ward

:If you play on the purple side, ward tribush and dragon early. If you don't have enough wards and would like to ward the enemy bush next to the wall, be cheap and place a ward simply between tribush and dragon.
If you play on the blue side, place the ward between tribush and dragon or go even as far as to ward the dragon and the enemy bush next to the wall. (Easier being on the blue side.)

Vision Ward

For dragon you can put a Vision Ward and kill the enemy wards there or get an early Oracle's Elixir. Part of map awareness is that you also take a note where the enemy wards are so you can inform your jungler.
Vision Wards go for Baron too as seen in the picture above or by having an Oracle's Elixir you can just put a normal ward there.

Jungle Respawns

It helps the jungler if the supporter knows something of the Jungle respawns.
A supporter must actually know only the times of the Dragon & Baron.

Game play

EARLY LANING

At the start it depends on your enemy supporter rather to play offensive or defensive.
You should play defensive against Champs like Taric, Leona or Blitzcrank because of their stuns. You have no real chances to escape at the beginning if they get you.
Versus Champs like Nunu & Willump, Nami or Janna, i recommend you to play aggressive from the start.

DEFENSIVE PLAY

Let them push and try to stay at tower with your adc. If you play defensive, it's important to ward your tower bush just to be aware of ambushes. But still try to zone the enemys out so they won't get free hits on your adc. Let your adc farm and wait for ganks from your jungler then u should be good to go.

AGGRESSIVE PLAY

If u play aggressive and your adc is pushing then stay at the enemys tower bush and harass them with your Hymn of Valor and your Power Chord and zone them out so they don't get exp. Don't forget to ward the river to be ready to back off.

MID GAME PLAY

Keep the map warded like I described in the warding chapter. At minute 20, you can start buying oracles and clear the enemy wards. If your bot lane won you can help the other lanes to push. In teamfights it's important to protect your adc and just use your Crescendo if you get a good chance to stun many champs. You can also use your ulti on single targets if no teamfight is in sight.

END GAME PLAY

End Game is not really different than the mid game. Stay behind in teamfights, heal your allies and wait for a good chance to use your ult.
Keep the baron warded!

Items

Aegis of the Legion and Shurelya's Battlesong are a must have on Sona.

+250 Health
+20 Armor
+20 Magic Resist

UNIQUE Aura - Legion: Grants nearby allies +10 Armor, +15 Magic Resist, and +10 Health Regen per 5 seconds. This effect is increased by 50% on allied minions.

Aegis of the Legion matches perfectly with the Power Chord. I prefer Aegis of the Legion's mixture of both armor and magic resist because Sona benefits from having the tanky stats to get off a good Crescendo.

+250 Health
+10 Health Regen per 5 seconds
+10 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Active: Grants nearby allies +40% Movement Speed for 3 seconds (60 second cooldown).

Shurelya's Battlesong which has useful support stats and a powerful active for initiating, chasing, escaping, countering kiting, and helping out carries without mobility, especially with Song of Celerity.

+180 Health

UNIQUE Passive - Ward Refresh: Holds 4 charges and refills upon visiting the shop.
UNIQUE Active - Ghost Ward: Consumes a charge to place an invisible ward that reveals the surrounding area for 3 minutes (maximum 2 wards placed from this item at once).

+360 Health

UNIQUE Passive - Ward Refresh: Holds 5 charges and refills upon visiting the shop.
UNIQUE Active - Ghost Ward: Consumes a charge to place an invisible ward that reveals the surrounding area for 3 minutes (maximum 3 wards placed from this item at once).

I like this 2 Items. Everyone knows it when you forget to buy Wards , or if you just have no money for it. However, 3 is not so much and you really need more than 3 Wards..
So it's your choice whether you get the item, or you buy several at the Wards.( Sight ward Vision Ward )
